The good news tonight is that Patrick Mooney is reporting that Duane Underwood Jr.'s MRI came back and it looks like he won't need Tommy John surgery. Just rest for now. The Cubs are hopeful that he will pitch again this season.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs blew past the Round Rock Express (Rangers), 4-3.
Starter Carlos Pimentel gave up a solo home run to the second batter of the game. After that, not much. Pimentel went six innings and allowed two runs, but only one was earned, on just three hits. Pimentel walked one and struck out nine.
Carl Edwards Jr. pitched two innings in relief of Pimentel and blew the Cubs one-run lead when he gave up a run in the top of the eighth. But he got the win when Iowa scored in the bottom of the frame. Edwards' final line was two innings and he was charged with one run on two hits. He struck out three and walked one.
Brian Schlitter pitched the ninth and got his seventh save. Schlitter gave up a two-out single, but nothing else. He struck out one.
Catcher Kyle Schwarber went 3 for 4 a double and an RBI.
Right fielder Junior Lake went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored.
Mike Olt was 0 for 4 in a rehab start.
Tennessee Smokies
Postponed because of a wet field. Doubleheader tomorrow.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans bleached the Salem Red Sox, 8-7.
Starter Fernando Cruz put the Pelicans in an early hole when he gave up four runs in the third inning. Cruz pitched three innings and allowed four runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out five.
David Garner got the win in relief after the Pelicans scored four runs in the bottom of the third and three more in the fourth. Garner pitched three innings and allowed just one unearned run on four hits. He struck out two and walked one.
Jasvir Rakkar made it difficult in the ninth inning when he gave up hits to three of the first four batters he faced, bringing in one run and putting runners on the corners with only one out. But he struck out the next two batters to end the game and claim his tenth save.
Center fielder Mark Zagunis was 2 for 3 with a double, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Zagunis scored twice and had one RBI.
First baseman Jacob Rogers went 2 for 4 with a two-run double in the third inning. Rogers also scored once.
Shortstop Chesny Young was 2 for 5 with a two-run double in the fourth. Young scored once.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs lost to the Lansing Lugnuts (Blue Jays), 3-2 in ten innings.
Brad Markey started this game and allowed two runs on five hits over five innings. Markey walked one and struck out three.
Sam Wilson took the loss when he surrendered a two-out solo home run in the tenth inning. Wilson's final line for the night was two innings and one run on two hits. He struck out four and walked nobody.
Shortstop Gleyber Torres was 3 for 5 and stole two bases. He scored both of the Cubs runs.
Gioskar Amaya was 2 for 3 with a walk. Center fielder Charcer Burks was 2 for 5.
Eugene Emeralds
The Eugene Emeralds tripped the Hillsboro Hops (Diamondbacks), 6-2.
Starter Justin Steele got the win after tossing six innings and giving up two runs on four hits. One of the two runs was unearned. Steele struck out six and walked two.
Francisco Carrillo threw the other three innings without allowing a run for the save. Carrillo gave up three hits. He struck out three and walked no one.
After having not homered in the first 12 games of the season, left fielder Eloy Jimenez homered for the second straight night with a solo blast in the fourth inning. Jimenez was 3 for 4 and scored twice.
Catcher Tyler Alamo was 2 for 4.
