Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs swept a doubleheader from the New Orleans Zephyrs (Marlins), 4-2 and 2-0.
Carlos Pimentel started game one and allowed two runs on four hits over five innings. Pimentel walked two and struck out four.
Ben Rowen got the win in his first game in the Cubs organization. Rowen threw a perfect bottom of the six and got the win when Iowa scored three times in the top of the seventh.
Brian Schlitter pitched the seventh for his eighth save. Schlitter walked the first batter he faced but allowed no other baserunners. Schlitter struck out two.
Iowa scored three times in the top of the seventh on a two-run home run by Junior Lake and a solo home run by Ryan Dent. It was Lake's second minor league home run this season and it was Dent's third and first for Iowa. Both hitters were 1 for 3.
Arismendy Alcantara was 2 for 3 with two doubles. One of the doubles scored Rubi Silva in the top of the first inning.
In game two, Jeffry Antigua got the win after allowing only one hit, a leadoff double in the sixth inning, over his 5.1 innings start.
Blake Cooper tossed a perfect seventh inning for his third save. He struck out one.
Every run the I-Cubs scored today came on a home run. Taylor Davis and Jonathan Mota both hit solo home runs in the third inning. It was Davis' seventh home run this year and third for Iowa. It was Mota's second. Both players were 2 for 3 tonight.
Angelo Amendolare was also 2 for 3.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies were vassalized by the Birmingham Barons (White Sox), 4-3.
Tsuyoshi Wada started this game on a rehab assignment, gave up two home runs in four innings, and took the loss. Wada's final line was four runs on eight hits over four innings. Wada did strike out five and walk no one, so there were positives in the outing.
Rafael Soriano made his Cubs debut in this game, throwing one scoreless inning in relief of Wada. Soriano allowed a double to the first batter he faced, but then he struck out the next three.
Ryan Williams threw the final three innings and gave up just one hit. He struck out seven and walked no one.
Third baseman Anthony Giansanti had a two-run double in the second inning. He was 1 for 4.
Elliot Soto was 2 for 5. Billy McKinney was 2 for 4.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were grounded by the Carolina Mudcats (Braves), 3-2.
Jeremy Null started and surrendered two runs on five hits over six innings. Null struck out three and of course, walked no one.
Fernando Cruz took the loss when he gave up a walkoff RBI double with one out in the ninth. Cruz pitched 2.1 innings and allowed just the one hit and the one walk that scored on the double. He struck out one.
Carlos Penalver was 3 for 4. Chesny Young was 2 for 4.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs were outlasted by the Ft. Wayne TinCaps (Padres), 10-9 in 12 innings.
Trevor Clifton started this game and went four innings, allowing six runs on seven hits. One of the runs was unearned. Clifton struck out six and walked one.
Dillon Maples took the loss when he allowed two runs in the top of the 12th. Maples pitched two innings and surrendered four hits and the two runs. Maples had one strikeout and issued one walk.
After Maples gave up two runs in the top of the inning, the SB Cubs rallied in the bottom of the inning. But the rally was stopped when Vimael Machin was thrown out trying to go to third on a one out single and then Andre Ely flew out.
Catcher Gioskar Amaya hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. It was his third this year. Amaya was 4 for 5 with a walk and the three RBI. He also scored three times.
First baseman David Bote was 3 for 6 with a double. He scored twice and had one RBI. Third baseman Jason Vosler was 2 for 6 with a double and two runs scored. Left fielder Charcer Burks was 2 for 6 and scored once.
Eugene Emeralds
The Eugene Emeralds beat the Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays), 6-5.
Carson Sands started this game and had some control issues. Sands walked four and had one wild pitch over four innings. Sands was charged with two runs on three hits. He did not strike anyone out.
Alex Santana got the win when the Emeralds pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth. Santana pitched three innings and allowed one unearned run on one hit. He struck out three and walked no one.
The Emeralds scored a run after the Canadians left fielder dropped a fly ball by Donnie Dewees in the bottom of the ninth to put runners on second and third with no outs. Then Frandy Delarosa hit a sac fly (that was dropped) and scored Kevonte Mitchell with the winning run.
Matt Rose was 2 for 4 in this game. Mitchell was 1 for 3 with two walks.
AZL Cubs
Off day.
