Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.
THE THREE HEROES:
- Superhero - John Lackey (.200). It's the sixth outing this season in which he's had a Game Score of 65 or better, which is the most that he's had in the first 48 games of any season in his career. His next-closest total was four in both 2014 and 2015.
- Hero - Anthony Rizzo (.111). Hey, even the bloop singles will do. They look just as good on the box score.
- Sidekick - Miguel Montero (.103). Made his mark on the right-field video board in the second inning.
THE THREE GOATS:
- Billy Goat - Kris Bryant (-.030). I don't know what Kris did to irk the WPA gods, but I think he's paid his penance by now; it's his third straight day at the top of the Goats with a WPA better than -.050. And once again, it was all in that first at-bat.
- Goat - Addison Russell (-.020). The only thing really separating him and...
- Kid - Matt Szczur (-.016). ...him on the day was batting order position.
RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 48: Lackey climbs back into positive territory while Bryant looks for a better brand of rum to appease the WPA deities.
