Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.
The Ramirez Catalyst of Game 153: It's a table-setting Ramirez in this one as Kris Bryant takes it for his single through the left side in the first to put runners on the corners with nobody out (no video available). WPA impact: +.091.
THE THREE HEROES:
- Superhero - Jake Arrieta (.199 / .199). After four consecutive starts with Game Scores under 60, he bounced back in a major way with Game Score of 80 in this outing, his best since his August 23 start against the Padres. It's also the first time since June 17 that he struck out 10 batters or more in a single game, a feat which he pulled off three times in the first half of the season.
- Hero - Anthony Rizzo (.138). His double in the first -- complete with an uncomfortable faceplant by Kolten Wong on the play -- would have been enough for the Ramirez in this game... had Dexter Fowler not scampered home on a wild pitch earlier in Rizzo's plate appearance. It still would have kept him on the second step, though.
- Sidekick - Kris Bryant (.097). He's up to 118 runs scored for the season, leading the National League by six over Nolan Arenado. He has a good chance to become the highest Cubs' run-scorer since 2001 when Sammy Sosa scored 146; it would take five more runs scored in the final nine games to break Sosa's 2002 mark of 122.
THE THREE GOATS: And now, we present the three Cubs who came to bat in the first and didn't get on base...
- Billy Goat - Addison Russell (-.049). Made the first out of the first on a forceout to third and had three subsequent chances with runners on, including two with a runner on third, that came up empty.
- Goat - Miguel Montero (-.038). Made the final out of the first on a small popout behind second base and later ended the third inning with a bases-loaded strikeout.
- Kid - Jason Heyward (-.013). And it's the second out of the first inning, his also of the forceout variety but this time to second base. He did have a walk and a stolen base later, though, which kept him well out of harm's way for either of the top two steps.
RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 153: Arrieta once again finds his membership card to the plus-30 club while Rizzo nudges back into second place, moving one-half of a point ahead of Kyle Hendricks.
