Open Thread: Cubs vs. Dodgers, Wednesday 4/19, 9:10 CT

Nice beard on Penny. Hey, I've got facial hair myself, but now maybe I'm understanding better why the White Sox are making some players get haircuts.

I hope you can see the dripping sarcasm there. Seriously, what on Earth do haircuts and lack of facial hair have to do with winning? Sure, the Yankees have that rule, and are winners.

But the scruffy Red Sox won the World Series in 2004, in part, by celebrating their scruffiness. There's more than one way to make a "team" image.

These are adult men. If they do their jobs well, what difference does it make what they look like? If I could be guaranteed a Cub World Championship if they all grew beards, I'd say GO FOR IT.

Here's a game note that I probably shouldn't even mention, because doing it will probably jinx the Cubs, but what the heck: the Cubs are one of only two teams (the Astros are the other) who have yet to lose two in a row this year.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Sean Marshall
 S. Marshall
Cubs
vs. Brad Penny
 B. Penny
Dodgers
1-0 W-L 2.0
7.71 ERA 1.50
4 SO 18
2 BB 1
2 HR 2
vs. LA -- vs. Cubs
I put the "vs. LA" link in for Marshall even though, of course, he's never faced them, just to keep the box looking nice. And if Marshall should win to go 2-0, he will become the first Cub starter to begin his career that way since this guy. Yes, really -- in 1999.

Penny's 1-2 lifetime with a 3.09 ERA vs. the Cubs; he's got excellent numbers so far this year -- only one walk. On paper this appears to be a huge mismatch.

But that's why they play the games.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

sean marshall
this game is sean marshalls chance to prove himself to be the 5th starter in the rotation when all cylinders are firing and prior and wood come back. Marshall needs a gem tonight, both for the team and for himself. By the way, how many more consecutive saves will it take for Dempster to earn an entrance song when he comes in the game?

Jeez, Al
That was like jinx on top of jinx on top of jinx . . no back-to-back losses, Marshall being the first to go 2-0, the consecutive saves in Buffalo Cubby's comment.
I sure hope the baseball gods aren't awake tonight!

I like...
...our chances tonight as long as Neifi is napping snuggly on the bench. Let's hope Walker isn't feeling any pain from the foul ball he hit off his ankle last night. He seemed to be limping around quite a bit. You could tell by Walker not even wanting to speak to the trainer that he's going to do everything he can to keep his starting spot on a full time basis.

I'd like to say it's because Mabry does better against Penny, but both Mabry and Murton are 1-for-3 lifetime vs. Penny.

Probably just getting another LH bat in the lineup, and getting Mabry some playing time. I wouldn't worry about it.

Exactly.  The worst thing Korey could do at an AB was homer, because then it just convinced him he was the power guy he always thought of himself as and he'd spend the next 2-3 games swinging for the fence.

last night's game - decision to not go with Demp
I'd like to comment on last night's game.  I was really ticked off when they decided to go with Ohman in the 9th.  In a freakin' tie in the 9th, you go with your closer.  Make him pitch a few extra innings if needed.  I'd like to kick Dusty in the butt for that decision!
Aaron Field http://www.aaronsmusic.com

by AWrigleyField on Apr 19, 2006 8:52 PM CDT reply actions

I'm not disagreeing with you...
... but modern managers just don't do this, unless it's in the heat of a pennant race.

I can't think of a single major league manager who would put his closer in, in a 9th-inning tie game in mid-April.

by Al Yellon on Apr 19, 2006 8:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Rob Neyer wrote about this
two weeks ago.  (INsider only, sorry.)

In it he chides Mike Hargrove and Joe Torre for not getting their best pitchers into tie games (and perhaps helping along the loss), and lauds Ken Macha for doing it (and winning).  His point is that it should happen more often.

by Whitebacon on Apr 19, 2006 9:03 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm going to disagree
You want Dempster to pitch two or three innings to keep a game tied on the road in mid-April?  Who do you want to close the game if the Cubs take the lead?  Who closes tonight if Dempster pitches three innings last night?  Ohman was in there to face the lefties that were coming up, a job he is more than capable of handling.  The fact that the winning run scored off of him is not the issue; the issue is not overworking your closer and saving him for situations where you really need him.

by gauchodirk on Apr 19, 2006 8:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Just pitching one inning
would have been better than him pitching none.  It's likely he doesn't take the L in the ninth and it gives us another chance to win.  At that point, throw Williamson out there for the save.
"Facts are meaningless. You could use facts to prove anything that's even remotely true!" -Homer J. Simpson

by Whitebacon on Apr 19, 2006 9:05 PM CDT up reply actions

And really,
pitching two innings isn't all that terrible, especially if he got through the first one relatively quickly.
"Facts are meaningless. You could use facts to prove anything that's even remotely true!" -Homer J. Simpson

by Whitebacon on Apr 19, 2006 9:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Two innings isn't really the point
If the other three or so members of the bullpen (with Howry and Eyre being used) can't keep the game tied for two innings, then this team has more problems than we have initially thought.  Dusty can't use Dempster for every tie game in the ninth or tenth, at least on the road, otherwise he might appear in 100 games (I'm exaggerating a bit, but not a whole lot).

by gauchodirk on Apr 19, 2006 9:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Dempster needs the time off
If you play him that much, he'll go down.  Before yesterday, he was in 6 games in 10 days.  If they kept him at that pace, he'd be pitching close to 100 innings

by Laven on Apr 19, 2006 9:07 PM CDT up reply actions

the problem is
that would've been dempster's 9th appearance in 13 games.

you can't toss the guy's arm off like this and expect him to still be around in july. you have to get him some rest.

if you want to nail dusty, ask him why in the hell dempster appears in five non-save situations in the first two weeks. as though he's not going to get enough work.

by gaius marius on Apr 19, 2006 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I was unaware
of his usage patterns this season.  That's pretty ridiculous, considering, there's only been three save situations. (We probably didn't need him in either Pittsburgh game, although I too would have used him in every game of that Cardinals series.
"Facts are meaningless. You could use facts to prove anything that's even remotely true!" -Homer J. Simpson

by Whitebacon on Apr 19, 2006 9:39 PM CDT up reply actions

disagree...
i would have used Dempster in the 10th, when we would have been up against the heart of the Dodgers order. If Ohman had gotten Lofton out after burying him in an 0-2 hole, Dempster would have had the 3,4,5 hitters in the 10th.

Now, i seriously doubt Dusty was planning on saving Demp for the heart of the Dodger order, but that's what i woulda done.

The Cubs better shine 'fore twenty-oh-nine!

He fell
while fielding the ball and injured his knee. His throw (scoop, actually) to Lee was way high, Lee backs into the basepath when he tried to catch the throw, Furcal collides with him, injuring Lee's wrist. (He was holding it as he went down.)

Lee was able to open and close his hand afterwards, they showed him flexing his fingers.

OMG, are you serious?  I can understand hating Furcal for the whole non-signing with the Cubs (although at the moment it seems to be working out fine for the Cubs) but what exactly did Furcal do wrong?  From what I saw, it looked like Lee backed into the basepath, directly into the path of Furcal.

Rotoworld
seems fairly optimistic. God, I hope they're right.

Derrek Lee left tonight's game in the seventh inning with a right wrist injury following a collision with Rafael Furcal at first base.
It looked pretty bad at first, but Lee didn't seem to be in a lot of pain as he left. Lee got his right wrist trapped between his body and Furcal's while he was standing at first bsae awaiting a throw. We'll label him day-to-day for now. If he needs to miss a few games, the Cubs will play Todd Walker at first and go with Jerry Hairston Jr. and Neifi Perez at second. Apr. 20 - 12:39 am et

The 405 ain't
anywhere near Dodger Stadium.

The freeways aren't the problem, anyway. My friend and I were some of the first folks out after the game ended last night, it took me 30 minutes to get out of the parking lot. From there it was fine.

Thank god for high fly balls, we're out of the inning without the Dodgers scoring. Pierre made the catch.

Wow
It sucks that west coast games don't get the press. Ronny caught that ball while he was in the air. That's a web gem, possibly a #1. But it won't even make a broadcast.

Ryan Dempster...
now has the Cubs record for consec. saves

Nice!
Okay, it's way, way, way, way past my bedtime, so I'm outta here.

Tip your cap (if you're wearing one) to the baseball gods for a speedy return of DLee and Eyre!!!

Good night, everyone!!!!

i wasn't wearing one....
but since the injury I put on a helmet, so I tip that

This kind of game
Says volumes about this year's team.  They could have rolled over and died after Lee and Eyre left the game on the same play.

Tough one...
I'm hoping that Lee is okay.
This might be the best thing for Eyre...give his arm a rest.
What a win.
Any words on Lee?

Well
That is the sign of a good baseball team.

They pull off the win after a terrible inning.

My optimism is not stopped.

A Pyrrhic
victory if Lee and/or Eyre are hurt.  But a pyrrhic victory is better than a pyrrhic loss.

sean marshall
why do the games he starts always get the most thread comments?  he needs to tighten things up.

by SF Cubbie on Apr 20, 2006 12:40 AM CDT reply actions

And lets not forget
The winning rally was a 2-out rally. Man, I love this team's spirit.

Also, Neifi I think played a big role after Cedeno's error. He went over and talked to Ronny after it happened. I agree with whoever said that Neifi would make a good coach someday.

by helen on Apr 20, 2006 12:40 AM CDT reply actions

don't forget his clutch hit!!
neifi rules!!!

rules what I'm not exactly sure, but I doubt we woulda won tonight if not for him.. let us not forget...

Great job by Marshall and Dempster too.
