Open Thread: Cubs vs. Padres, Sunday 5/14, 1:20 CT

Have a look at the grins on these guys. What do either of them have to smile about?

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Rich Hill
 R. Hill
Cubs
vs. Clay Hensley
 C. Hensley
Padres
0-2 W-L 1-2
9.00 ERA 4.73
5 SO 22
5 BB 19
3 HR 3
vs. SD -- vs. Cubs

Hill hasn't pitched well this year in his two starts. Hensley's walked at least three in each of his last five appearances.

I confess that the only thing I know about Hensley is that he appeared earlier in this series as a pinch-runner, when Woody Williams left Friday's game with a hamstring pull. He has never pitched against the Cubs.

Hill's experience against anyone on the Padres consists of facing the two former Mets on the team -- Mike Cameron (a two-run single in 2 AB) and Mike Piazza (a walk). That was in this game, the worst start of Hill's career.

Kerry Wood is now scheduled to return Thursday instead of Wednesday. That would likely mean that Carlos Zambrano would pitch on Tuesday and Sean Marshall on Wednesday, to take advantage of the off-day Monday. You think things are bad for the Cubs? The Nationals, coming in here Tuesday, gave up five runs in the last of the ninth yesterday in Atlanta.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Hensley has every reason to smile
He's with a team that never loses anymore, especially with 6 (and probably 7, weather permitting) in a row against what has become the worst team in the NL. Hill can smile too, because somehow he made the major leagues. Smiles all around, except for us.

by Smooth Jazz Man San Diego on May 14, 2006 11:15 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah, I was going to point that out
They can smile because they make 360K +, they're in the big leagues, they're starting pitchers in big market teams with high revenues and guaranteed 30,000 fans a game. All of that, we don't have.
According to the Chicago Tribune: "The Oakland A's are 32-0 when they have scored more runs than their opponents.

Happy Mothers Day to all the great mothers out there today!  Happy mothers Day to my Mom especially and I thank her allowing me to watch WGN and the Cubs when I was young kid in the 1980's.  I'm going to be upbeat today and I hope today is the day the Cubs turn it around.  Things are bad right now but there's plenty of time to get back into things. We could have an entirely different team a couple of months from now so let's hang on for a little longer.  I'm not giving up and the I hope the team doesn't either.  Let's go Cubs!

Pierre
hasn't hit a ball to right in ages, he hits grounders to third, strikes out, or flies to left. What happened to the guy who'd hit smashes into the corner for triples?

by CubFaninNY on May 14, 2006 12:50 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm still
really irritated that Dusty isn't starting Bench Buddy Theriot, as I would think many others are. But I can point to the strong possibility that Barrett will produce more than Blanco in the same place would, and the Bynum-less starting lineup is always good to see. If the Orange Guy can get a couple of hits, he might be in line for an RBI or two. (Of course, the likelihood of him actually scoring a run with Perez and Hill behind him is slim.)

this team MUST take TWICE as many pitches as it does or this club will lose 90 going away.

I wish our broadcasters
gave us some real insight into how the individuals on the team are addressing this slump.  I live in SF Bay Area now, and the Giants announcers here (including Krukow) are fantastic at it.

When the Giants are going bad, they give you an incredible amount of detail about how each player (and coach/manager) is trying to make it better.  You really watch the game differently, knowing that so-and-so is shortening his stroke, or that guy is trying pitching off the other side of the rubber, trying to break out.

It just helps you remember that the players hate losing, hate it as much as we do, and are working hard to fix it.  I assume the Cub players are the same.

I wish Brenly and Kasper, and Pat and Ron (although they are better at it) could provide more of that insight.  It makes bad stretches like this easier to deal with.

by SVNorthsider on May 14, 2006 3:18 PM CDT reply actions

We did have an announcer that did that
Unfortunately, expressing your opinion, even if its 100% correct, gets you fired, apparently.

Yeah...
...although he wasn't fired...officially.  Although, I guess he might as well have been.

I really miss Stoney.  Especially during this bad streak.  He would be the reason to tune in.

Now, it is almost a chore.  It's like gawking at a train wreck.

by jazzman56 on May 14, 2006 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

That presumes
they are doing something differently. Baker assures them that it's just a matter of bad breaks, not bad performance.

by tharr on May 14, 2006 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions

And did the same stuff.  But the players still drove themselves to improve -- and the cool things is tha the broadcasters let you see all that.

If anything...

Not only are the Cubs going to lose this game, but they are going to further burn up their relievers. Ryu should have been brought into this game after Williamson's wild pitches. Ryu should have been allowed to pitch several innings, perhaps finish the game up, and hope to save the pen.

That two birds - one stone thing...
If they fire the "Dude" and  name Brenly manager I won't see DB blow another double switch (or another elbow) and won't have to listen Bob during the game.

Cubs are better
than only 3 last place teams that were never expected to perform:

KC
Fla
Pitt

and not by much.

by CubFaninNY on May 14, 2006 4:29 PM CDT reply actions

I would say the Cubs are not
better than the Fish either, but you know what they actually have a future having blown up their team in the off season.  The Cubs, on the other hand, will have to PRAY for Carlos Lee and/or Alfonso Soriano or 2007 WILL BE EXACTLY THE SAME.

by Santos Sorrow @ Bleed Cubbie Blue on May 14, 2006 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Lee?
I'd love him here, but he'll PROBABLY be taught to be "aggressive" like Aramis, who used to be a patient hitter.

They're better in the standings, but not by much, and not for long.

by CubFaninNY on May 14, 2006 4:36 PM CDT up reply actions

i ask again
NOW do you accept that this club is finito, done, dead on arrival -- and needs to start working out trades to contenders, playing theriot every day and call guzman back up and put him into the rotation asap?

yes, mostly
but Guzman is far from ML ready.

by CubFaninNY on May 14, 2006 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Guzman?
Did you miss the last two weeks, gaius?

He's once of those "untouchables" who should have been touched long ago. And traded. Now he's probably worthless.

This is my big problem with Hendry. He thinks all the guys he scouted are the second coming of Willie Mays/Bob Gibson.

I agree with this...
... I still can't figure out why Theriot, and before him Restovich, are put on the roster and not given any playing time.

Hendry is apparently challenging Baker to play them, and he's refusing.

To me....
this makes no sense.  If Dusty truly wants an extension, why would he sabotage the GM who just got his?

by timeforachange on May 15, 2006 8:40 AM CDT up reply actions

great
let's trade him, then.

but if we're going to, let's get to it. and if we're not, let's bring him up and make him prove that he can or can't hack it at this level.

You still can't...
... make major deals now. Do you want to get nothing in return? Wait till later when teams are more desperate and it's a seller's market.

At this point, who would take Juan Pierre, anyway?

by Al Yellon on May 14, 2006 5:02 PM CDT up reply actions

pierre
is more than his last two months. the market for him may be thinner, but it'll be there. he'll be one of the few available leadoff guys with a proven track record.

i agree that the quality of deals to be made will probably improve into july. but the groundwork for those deals has to start being laid NOW -- lest we end up in yet another of these situations where the excuse for failure du jour is "we were busy trying to get dusty's extension set up -- we didn't have time."

as i recall, this awful and pathetic excuse has been applied to everything from jacque jones to the entire 2004-2005 offseason.

Aramis
I know it is easy to trash a team carrying four second basemen, but what is the problem with Ramirez.  .220 avg and barely .300 obp are not the stats of a superstar making $11M a year.  Does anyone know if something is wrong?

Bright side
At least his OBP is 80 points over his BA.  The hits will come.

losing team
I remember them showing the future 4 or 5 series the Cubs were playing back before they went on the West Coast road trip, and every team they were playing had a losing record.  I believe at that time, the Cubs had a winning record.  They made it look as though it should be an easy road trip.  The tables turned on us and now they're like the only losing team out of all the teams they played.  They've all been playing amazing and the Cubs are the worst team in baseball right now.  It blows my mind how 1 stinking player getting hurt could cause our team to come unglued.  Derrek Lee is great, yes, but how can he have that much of an impact.  The last few years the Cubs have done the same thing they're doing this year.  Finding every way possible to lose.  I remember that one stretch they went through where everything was going wrong.  Like the throw to first by Latroy Hawkins I think, that hit off the baserunner's helmet and went in to the crowd and the winning run scored.  This year it's not weird stuff happening though, it just terrible offense and spotty pitching.  We all know that all the players in the Cubs lineup are good players, and they have shown us that before.  I truly believe it's all in their heads and once they get out of it, which may not be until Lee returns, they'll start to win more.  But in all the years I've been a Cubs fan, I've never known them to go on a long winning streak.  So the possibility of them coming back to win the division or wild card is pretty slim in my opinion.

That's actually a good question.  Does anyone know the longest win streak the Cubs have had in the past 10 years?

I think...
12 games, ending June 2, 2001.  That was the longest streak by the Cubs since a 15-game streak in 1936.

it was pretty clear even when they were winning that the team was poor and getting lucky. lee going down merely coincided with the end of that lucky bit.

bad teams find ways to lose. that's what this club is doing, and what it is.

The Padres got lucky..
I love this site. Don't worry the CUBS will make the playoffs for sure. I bleed cubbie blue so I know that we will have Wood back in a week and he is unbeatable. He'll probably throw some mor eno hitters and win another CY YOUNG.

Then Prior and Lee will make this tem the best in baseball again. This is our yera to win the World sERIES. CUBS ALL THE WAY !
