Funny, He Doesn't Look Drewish

PHOENIX -- Stephen Drew, who is neither by temperament nor ability anything like his big brother J. D., was a one-man wrecking crew last night as the Cubs lost game one of the Division Series to the Diamondbacks 3-1.

Drew's monstrous home run (432 feet, OVER the swimming pool) gave Arizona the lead 1-0 in the fourth inning; it was the only mistake Carlos Zambrano made in throwing six strong innings.

Six. And a lot of you, in this diary, debated whether Z should have been sent out to start the seventh. Z tried to convince Lou to let him:

Cruising along through six innings, Carlos Zambrano tried to talk Lou Piniella into sending him back out for the seventh.

"I said, 'Let me pitch one more,"' Zambrano said. "And he said, 'That's enough.' He's the manager."

Yes, I am well aware that each win, each loss, is magnified in a short series, more so in these five-game division series, and perhaps Lou made a mistake by "looking ahead". But at the time, I agreed with the move. Carlos Marmol has been pretty much lights-out all season. If he'd have been so again last night, not a single one of you would have complained about this move. Instead, Marmol gave up a HR to D'backs 3B Mark Reynolds, the first batter he faced, then issued a walk, a double to Augie Ojeda, of all people, and the third run scored on a sacrifice fly (give Jacque Jones credit, he made a pretty good throw, although he had little chance of getting Chris Snyder).

All of this doesn't mean much, because the Cubs' offense went back to its bad old early-season ways -- leaving eight men on base in the first six innings, including leaving the bases loaded when Z batted with two out and the tying run having just scored... and that, in fact, was where Drew had robbed the Cubs again. He made a nice reach to stop Ryan Theriot's ball from going through the infield. He didn't have a play, but if that ball goes through, the Cubs have a 2-1 lead -- and maybe then, Lou would have batted for Z, although Z had already doubled off Brandon Webb. (Webb, although he gave up only one run, did get hit by the Cubs -- Aramis Ramirez hit two fly balls to the warning track in right field that briefly gave us the thought that "Hey! Maybe!" But they were not to be.)

Drew also made a terrific grab off a line drive by Z that appeared headed for left field in the fifth inning.

And that, really, was that. When Arizona gets a late-inning lead, they're tough to come back against, as their late-inning relief stacks up well against just about anyone, and it was no different last night; Brandon Lyon and Jose Valverde shut the Cubs down, with only a brief blip of hope when Daryle Ward drew a two-out walk. With Alfonso Soriano due up, we thought again, "Hey! Maybe!"

Not last night. Soriano looked terrible all night -- not surprising, as pitchers like Webb who throw mostly breaking stuff drive him nuts -- and he bounced into a force play to end the game.

I should have known it wasn't going to be the Cubs' night when my scoring pencil broke in the second inning. I managed to peel off enough of the wood to use the remains of the lead for the remains of the evening, but somehow I knew that couldn't be a good sign.

As we expected, blue jerseys and caps were everywhere at Chase Field, though perhaps not quite as many as we thought; it might have been about 20% of the crowd, loud enough to hear "Let's Go Cubbies!" chants often throughout; the D'backs fans returned fire with "Let's Go D'backs!", alternating with ours. For the most part, Arizona fans seemed friendly and accomodating, unlike fans in certain other cities. There are so many former Chicagoans living here, and the Cubs have been here for spring training for so long, the locals seem almost used to us. I've been to this ballpark before and wrote about it in April 2005, including this one with a photo, as well as this one from Opening Day 2005, where Z didn't pitch very well; in fact, the Cubs historically have not fared well in whatever they're calling Bank Holding Company Ballpark these days.

As is common for areas around ballparks during the postseason, certain prices are jacked up -- street parking lots that charge $10 or $15 during the regular season were charging $30. Fortunately, the garage one block from the park was still $10 -- and it wasn't that difficult to exit after the game, which is sometimes the case with parking garages. Food at this ballpark is decent, nothing special, as I wrote about in one of the links above. During the game the atmosphere was loud, but oddly enough, not as loud as I have heard it in other playoff games in other cities. It was almost as if the D'backs fans were still a bit amazed that they were even there. As I noted above, there were no incidents, at least not near my seat down the LF line -- the only goofiness was, apparently, caused by a CUB fan who was stirring up trouble behind the plate, briefly delaying the game when 2B umpire Greg Gibson ran in to discuss the distraction with plate umpire Ed Montague. Another unwelcome distraction was He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named, who plunked himself down about ten rows in front of me and started howling. Who flew him out here, anyway? Whoever it is should be sentenced to be chained to a chair while H-W-S-N-B-N yells in his ear for an hour. Incidentally, when a montage of highlights from the 2007 season was shown on the scoreboard between innings, everyone -- Cub and D'back fans alike -- booed when Barry Bonds' 756th HR was shown.

A few thoughts: while you don't want to lose any game in a playoff series, and it may sound odd to say this, last night was the one game the Cubs could afford to lose, given that Webb was on the mound and it was likely to be a tough one, as it turned out to be. With Arizona's starting pitching quality taking a marked turn downward starting tonight, Ted Lilly's task is clear: do what Z did, and if the offense can get jumpstarted again to do what it did most of September, this series should return to Chicago tied 1-1.

You need not look very far into recent baseball history to find teams that won the first game of a Division Series, then lost three straight: last year's Yankees, who did exactly what the D'backs did: won the first game at home, then lost three in a row. The 2003 Marlins and the 2002 Angels reversed this; they lost the first game on the road, then won the Division Series, and both those clubs went on to win the World Series. The 2000 Mets made the World Series after losing their first Division Series game at home, although they lost the WS to the Yankees. For the Yankees' part, their 2004 edition lost the first game at home, then won three in a row. So did the 2003 Yankees; both of those wins were over the same team, the Twins -- one of whose players, Jacque Jones, is now a Cub.

So for those of you who are in "sky-is-falling" mode, there is plenty of baseball left to be played. Onward and let's win tonight.

For those who had mentioned getting together before tonight's game, and even if you hadn't participated in this diary discussing that possibility the other day, the current plan is for any BCB'ers attending the game to meet at a place called "3rd & Jackson", which is (you'll never guess!) at the corner of 3rd & Jackson, just across the street from the western entrance to Chase Field. I'll be wearing my gray 2007 game-worn Scott Moore jersey.

Keep the faith; GO CUBS!

Thats right
You cannot normally win a ballgame by only scoring one run.  The lack of offense is really why we didn't win Game 1.

On a different subject
Does anyone have a link to the defensive play that Theriot almost made on a weak ground ball.  It was early in the game I think.

Bingo.
One run in the last fifteen innings.  That is not a trend that indicates playoff victories.

The Cubs need to score some runs for Lilly.  It's going to be a very short series if the Cubs' bats stay anemic.

ONE DAMN RUN - that's all you need to know about yesterday.  Harping about Lou/Zambrano or even Marmol is just ridiculous with ONE DAMN RUN.

Not sure that lack of offense is biggest concern
Webb is awesome.  And so we need to score runs in the other games when he's not pitching, and hope by the second time we see him the Cubbies have figured out how to hit him.  But calling the Cubs' bats anemic last night discounts how good Webb really is.

The Marmol meltdown is the biggest concern to me.  If we can't rely on our bullpen to be awesome (like we've been albe to for the past 4 months), we're dead in the water no matter who pitches for AZ.

Here's hoping the 7th inning was an aberration.

The sky is not falling, I'm
just dissapointed in the loss.   I was frustrated in the offense, and was scared by Z in the first as he started hopping around the mound and constantly adjusting himself. Those behaviors usually portend disaster.  I was very pleased he settled down.

Webb is on the bench tonight, so he can't hurt anyone.  Time to make hay against someone else.

Arizona
I lived in Arizona briefly, and I can tell you, that the news media and such has a lot of influence in the Phoenix area.  I am just going out on a limb here, but I would guess that the AZ media heard how Cubs fans were supposed to dominate the attendance this series.  They probably pumped the idea that if you are true to Phoenix, then go to the game to support the local team even if you are just an occasional fan.  The news media likes to put their stamp on the loyalty factor, and I wouldn't be surprised if local Arizona people were the ones that bought up all the tickets at the last minute, thus the quality of fans such as the people holding the 1908 sign.

You are not going out
on any limb. After Mike Royko's satire was published on the front page of the then San Diego Tribune, in 1984, all hell broke loose; that led to the nasty conditions that awaited Cubs fans inside then-San Diego Stadium in the NLCS.

"How dare he insult us as laid-back sushi-eaters!" Let's show them!! Was the mind-set.

That's why any person weraring Cub gear was targeted for abuse, be it physical (yes, actual physical abuse) or verbal. That's why flaming teddy bears were all over the parking lot. A city lost its' collective mind over a 'perceived' insult - an inferiority complex which persists to this day.

I was highly disappointed in Soriano...
...we all know his free-swinging ways, but in a playoff game, against one of the best junk pitchers in the game, must he feebly ground out time and time again?  Aramis looked good - like he barely missed TWO homers - but Soriano looked like horseshit.

I hate to say it
but I predicted Soriano would be shut down.  He has the type of swing which gets exposed when you face pitchers that have the scouting report and knows how to execute pitches.

Lee and Ramirez need to pick up the slack here as well as someone you don't expect to step up.  Both Ramirez and Lee appeared a little anxious, but I tend to think tonight will be a different story.

Lou did the right thing
Marmol has been lights out

Even if Z pitches 3 more scoreless innings - no runs - eventually we go to Marmol in the 10th and then Z is more tired on Sunday.

Top 5 hitters in the line-up were like 1-20.

If Soirano, Lee, and ARAM go quietly - we have little chance. We need SOME runs tonight.

Last night D'backs had to win and did - tonite Cubs have to win. We'll see

Aug 15 - Ted Lilly walked by the lineup card and said to nobody in particular "I can't believe I'm batting 9th again".

I just...
... don't think you bring a young reliever into his first playoff action during the first key moment of the series. I would have rather seen Wood or Howry. I have no problem w/ lifting Zambrano. I have a problem with the decision to use Marmol, whether or not he's the best reliever in the NL. He's still green.

Overall the offense either had no plan or did not execute it. You cannot wait back to hit a 3 run HR off Brandon Webb. Piniella said that you can't win games getting four hits... well if you sacrifice runners over and drive them in with fly balls, you can win games and the Cubs had the chance to be up 2-1 heading into the 7th inning.

I am a big Piniella fan. He did not manage a good game last night.

So bring in Howry
even if ihe does the job, eventually Howry comes out and the score is still 1-1.

The offense lost this one and I suppose the bright side is that Z only threw 83 pitches.

re: which is why...
I'm not sure I'd use the word "inexplicable." Big Z did hit a ringing double off of Webb in his first at-bat and that line drive to Drew was hit in almost exactly the same manner -- it was just too low to the ground. Plus, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe Z has ever been considered a great bunter.

Z is a good hitter...
... for a pitcher. He's still hitting under .250. If the Cubs were facing even Davis or Hernandez, fine, don't bunt and go for the big inning. Brandon Webb is the reigning NL Cy Young award winner and you take each and every run you can get. The decision to not bunt Theriot over was wrong.

I got to agree with old DML but there must be
something other than the obvious. I have to go back to an old line in the Movie "Hoosiers" when the alcoholic father 'Shooter' played by Dennis Hopper observed something others could not see, "I see that you are [Coach Dale] breaking the Colts".

Piniella got control of this team in late May when they had played their way, [Dusty ball] for 2 months and reverted to that last night. Now that they experienced a loss will they be open to follow him again. I had heard that the batting practices were a bombs away spectacle the last two days.

Losing this game while important is not like losing the series. Tonight I suspect that the Cubs will have a different approach. I think the overthrow by Reynolds showed an inherent weakness that the Cubs will look to exploit.

Not bunting Soriano or Zambrano or pinch hitting Zambrano were tactical errors.

Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."

We can all second guess the moves last night
but this doesn't matter.  The Cubs left 9 men on base.  If, Lilly and the Cubs can win tonight, the pressure really turns to the D'backs to get game 3 before they face Z again in game 4 (given the fact that he only threw 85 pitches).

But back to game 1...Marmol had to be brought in for his normal role.  My guess is the jitters are done.  He will be solid from now on.

Lou counted on his guys to produce in key hitting situations and they did not against the guy who is likely to get the Cy Young again.  In many of those situations, the ball was hit hard but at someone, or the D'back defense made a nice play.

On to game 2.  Let's hope the Ice Man does his usual job of following a Z loss with a great outing.  We really need a solid game from Lilly tonight!  GO CUBS!

Prince Fielder...he is neither.

Nope
Think about it.

You think that Soriano is likely to make good on a contact play?

Of all the Cubs hitters, Soriano is the most likely to K, and if he's going to put wood on a ball, there's a solid chance it falls in for a hit and Theriot scores from second anyways.

I agree that I was surprised to not see Z lay down a bunt in that spot. But Soriano is not the guy you want up when you need the ball put in play.

by WittyUserName on Oct 4, 2007 12:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe, but...
If you don't bring in Marmol in that situation when that has been his job description all year long, then what kind of message are you sending to the kid? I only sort of trust you? You are good enough for the regular season, but not the playoffs?

No, I think that the only pitcher that Lou could have and should have brought in there was Marmol. I agree with the decision. Sometimes the odds just don't work out. Even when there is a 2 in 3 chance of something working, 1 in 3 times it won't. Doesn't mean that you shouldn't go with the heavy chance or that you made a bad decision if it ends up going the wrong way.

by Archie on Oct 4, 2007 10:22 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The message?
That the playoffs are a pressure cooker. We have faith in you. You are going to have a long, successful career and you'll soon be a closer. We forsee you being a key to this year's playoffs run and we're going to give you your first opportunity in a lower stress situation because of that.

...I disagree
On another board, someone made a good observation - instead of having Zambrano on a short leash in Game 1, why not let him throw his normal pitch count and have him on a short leash in Game 4?

My personal thought is that if he's pitching as well as he was, worry about winning this game before worrying about Game 4.

by Tracy on Oct 4, 2007 10:19 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed
Marmol has been arguably the best relief pitcher in the majors this year. Last night was the worst outing he's had all year.

A hard pill to swallow considering his dominance this year, and the fact that last night was a winnable game against the DBacks ONLY good pitcher.

We win tonight and I think we'll be okay. I hope. I can't stand all this nervousness.

Situations Marmol is accustomed
I was surprised that Marmol came in to START an inning. He is more used to coming in with men in scoring position. I think this is not what he is accustomed to and he blew up.

We'll be OK with a win tonight but I do call it a must win.

That said...
if Webb didn't win last night, the DBacks would have almost certainly been swept.

They are in their home park, with their ace, a 2 time Cy Young award winner.  They won the game they HAD to.  It wouldn't surprise you if Santana won his 1st outing against the Yankees or Red Sox, would it?

Our 2nd and 3rd pitchers are much better than theirs and our team is better.  Here's to Lilly having a good game and evening the series to send it back to Wrigley.

Feeling Good
For some reason I feel really good this morning. I got home, a bit inebriated at 1:30 (NY) and woke up 6 hours later thinking "Hey, it was 3-1. Z pitched great. We actually hit the ball hard. Lou made a "mistake". Okay, let's win tonight."

And that is how I feel now. Everyone is questioning Lou, but honestly, if Torre did the same thing, putting Jaba in in the same situation, would that have been questioned as much as this is.

And another thing - we did take some good cuts at Webb, who was sharp, mostly. He did walk a couple of guys he shouldn't have, and some of his pitches seemed a bit wild. But Aramis had two really good knocks. Z seemed to handle him well. I think the DBacks got lucky last night. And luck might be the only thing going for them. They had it all year and they had it last night.

Now let's show them that talent always trumps luck.

Rock on Theodore Roosevelt Lilly!

Oh, and before I forget, some Doug Davis stats:

Murton is 6/10 against him. I would be surprised if he did not play tonight.

Soriano 5/14 1HR
Theriot 4/6 (and I expect him in the 2-hole again)
JJ 5/17
Neither Lee nor Ramirez have good AVG against him, but both have 2HRs.

Al, you are exactly right when you said this is the game the Cubs "could afford to lose." We all knew last night was going to be tough. Yes, there were some things that didn't go well for the Cubs, but there were some positives as well.
Howry looked real good. Defensively they played well. There were a lot of hard hit balls, but they were just right at people. Z didn't lose his cool and pitched a heck of a ballgame.
We've got Uncle Teddy on the hill tonight. He has been money after a lose this year. Hopefully he keeps the ball down and the bats come alive for us offensively.

Webb beat the Cubs
It was a well played game for both teams. Webb pitched well as did Z. A couple of pitching mistakes was all the difference in this game. I am not bent up about this game considering the effort that the Cubs put forth. Yeah batting looked a little bad at time, D Lee's first 2 at bats were not good. But then he figure Webb out and made the adjustment. The Cubs hit the ball hard but right at people. If some of those hits drop in and the Cubs would have won that game. Honestly I was hoping to steal that game and then really put the pressure on the young D-Backs.

Get a split tonight and bring it back home to Chicago is the goal. Just get some runs tonight and support Lilly. I believe it'll happen.

6-01-2007 the Cubs begin to rise. They will never look back.

A couple of things
Tonight is key.  A win tonight and the Cubs are on track to take this series.  A loss and it will be very, very tough - not impossible, but tough.

As for Lou's decision last night, I am on the fence.  He probably thought we had a chance to steal one w/o Z, and have Z ready on Sunday if it got that far.  In my opinion, the wisdom (or lack thereof) of Lou's move will only be apparent when (knock on wood) Game 4 rolls around.  If Zambrano is lights out and leads the Cubs to victory, it will have been a good move despite the loss.  Even if after Sunday the Cubs are at 2-2, they will have the guy who has been the shut-down pitcher for them all year taking the mound on Tuesday.

I do find it somewhat amusing that the controversy this time around is over lifting the starting pitcher too early, when a certain manager who will not be named (but was quite fond of toothpicks) was constantly roasted over leaving the starters in too long.

by SuperContext on Oct 4, 2007 10:29 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Certain managers
Actually, last night I turned to the guy sitting next to me and said, "Did Lou just become the anti-Grady Little." Little left Pedro in too long and look what happened, Lou didn't leave Z in and...

And yes, I also thought of the "Manager We Formerly Trustied"

The Cubs lost the 1984 pennant on my 9th Birthday. Top That!

Early hook
I wonder when Lou decided. I would've liked to see a pinch hitter in the top six when they had Webb on the ropes, and maybe even end his night, too.

good point
and great irony about toothpick manager. He would have ridden Z through 8...

big picture?
our season comes down to these 5 games right now...

by DartmouthCubsFan on Oct 4, 2007 11:02 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Big picture as in the entire series
Not just game one.

Maybe his thought was, "our offense does not have it tonight.  We are facing the opposing team's ace, then a great bullpen, and even if Z is lights out next inning, we are unlikely to win this one.  Let's give ourselves the best chance to win games 2-4 and close this thing out, and not worry about hitting against Brandon Webb again until 2008."

Not saying that's the right call, but it certainly is a "big picture" view of the series.

by SuperContext on Oct 4, 2007 11:13 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Excellent analysis.
Plus, Z won't be facing Webb in game 4 -- he'll be facing Micah Owings.

And it sets up a killer game 5 for the Cubs
If the Cubs don't win it in 4, they will have the daunting task of beating Arizona on the road with a rested Webb matched against Lilly.  That's a tough game for the Cubs.  Games 2 and 3 are all the more important so that you at least have a chance to let Z win it without seeing Webb again.

by Orval Overall on Oct 4, 2007 11:33 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

wanna bet?
If the Dbacks are down 2-1 and facing elimination, you really think Melvin doesn't go to Brandon Webb? He'd be insane not to. The nice thing about managing is that you can change your mind.

by dmlichte on Oct 4, 2007 11:34 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not according to Melvin
That very question was asked of him on Tuesday and he responded that he would still stick with Owings in Game 4.

His logic is that if he is down 2 games to 1, he still has to win two ball games to win the series and he would rather have a rested Webb in Game 5 and take his chances with Micah in Game 4.

Just reporting to you what the man said.

by jazzman56 on Oct 4, 2007 11:44 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not arguing...
... with what people are reporting. I think Melvin may intend on using Webb in game 5 right now, but if the series is 2-1 Cubs, that very well may change. If I'm Melvin, I'd rather have Webb start at a hostile Wrigley and Owings at Chase, regardless of the rest factor.

the genuis of Piniella forward strategy
Piniella is counting on the fact that Lilly and Hill will outmatch Davis and Hernandez or Owings and force Melvin's hand...

Not setting up Webb is a mistake and hasty move dictated by the events instead managing the events.

If Cubs are up 2-1 it is pick your poison. By winning with Webb vs Zambrano for a second time it puts Lilly in again in a better match up, by going with Owings it places a burden of a rookie against the Ace and elimination.

Only good strategy if Dbacks up 2-1

Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."

by Ivy Walls on Oct 4, 2007 12:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Uh sorry
Ivy, but it is NEVER a good strategy to sacrifice a win in a best 3 of 5 series.  I'm sure if Piniella had any inkling that Marmol would groove a pitch to Reynolds, he would've left Carlos in.

Besides, Webb only threw 4 more pitches than Z did last night, and given that he is not as much of a power pitcher as Carlos, there is no real reason Webb could not go in a Game 4 and be just as rested as Z.

But, I still think it will be Micah in Game 4 for a number of reasons I have already mentioned.  You guys are discounting the type of competitor Micah has proven to be.

Don't be shocked if there is a Game 5 in Phoenix with Webb going against Lilly.

I don't think so
Melvin has nursed a ridiculously young team with a negative run differential and the lowest batting average in the league (along with a number of key injuries), to 90 wins and I think he has built up a significant amount of fan good will for his lineup decisions.

Sure, if he pitches Owings in Game 4 down 2-1 and Owings loses, he will be second guessed.  If he pitches Webb on short rest down 2-1 in Game 4 and loses, he will also be second guessed.

But, I've watched this team all year, and Owings was awesome in two of the biggest games of the season. He has captured the imagination of the fan base here with his pitching and hitting exploits and a lot of people want to see him in the postseason (there has been a lot of support for throwing him in Game 3 instead of Livan Hernandez).

I'll make you guys a bet right now...if the Cubs are up 2-1, Micah Owings starts Game 4 in Chicago.

Any takers?

re: Big picture as in the entire series
And, y'know, even in light of last night's loss, I still can't wholly fault Lou for having this kind of "big picture" attitude. Sure, in retrospect, maybe bringing in a pitcher with playoff experience (Kerry Wood?) after pulling Z would have prevented those two runs. Then again, maybe not.

In any case, Lou knows what we all know -- that the D'Backs have been winning games like the one last night all frickin' year. They get great pitching, they get just a little bit ahead in the late innings, and then they bring in their rock solid bullpen. Nobody has hit Valverde all season.

Maybe I won't feel so forgiving if the worst comes to pass but, for now, I remain hopeful.

Exactly
"Maybe I won't feel so forgiving if the worst comes to pass but, for now, I remain hopeful."

There's no reason not to be.  The pitching match-ups tonight and Saturday clearly favor the Cubs, and Lou is smart enought to realize that.  He is also smart enough to know that the D'backs have defied logic all year.

That potentially brings us to a game 4 with the Cubs up 2-1 and then it gets real interesting.  At that point, what happened last night will be a distant memory.

by jazzman56 on Oct 4, 2007 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

the problem is
you cant assume in a 1-1 game that you cant win, thats absurd

and by assuming our offense wasnt going to score runs he started planning for a game 4 that may not even in happen, while sacrificing our best chance to win game 1

Al said if Marmol came in and threw shutout baseball no one would complain, which isnt accurate. If we're in a battle of bullpens with the DBacks (who also have a good pen) and we sacrifice having leverage by bringing in a reliever early, we could lose out later in the game if it went into extras

i dont see how anyone can justify sacrificing our best chance to win in a 1-1 game, for a potential game 4 that may never even happen

its ludicrous

by DartmouthCubsFan on Oct 4, 2007 11:19 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

re: the problem is
Right, but I don't think pulling Z and bringing in Marmol automatically means Lou thought the Cubs couldn't win. I think he had faith that his bullpen -- Marmol in  particular -- could continue the job Big Z was doing.

And, for better or worse, given Z's cramping problems and his lackluster start the last time he went on three days' rest, Lou was taking a calculated risk on saving Z's arm. I'm not completely thrilled with the decision either, but I understand it.

The Chicago Cubs: 2007 Central Division Champions

by dat cubfan daver on Oct 4, 2007 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i agree
but this is the reasoning i keep getting and was mentioned above:

"Maybe his thought was, "our offense does not have it tonight.  We are facing the opposing team's ace, then a great bullpen, and even if Z is lights out next inning, we are unlikely to win this one."

by DartmouthCubsFan on Oct 4, 2007 11:33 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe its not "we're unlikely to win"
Maybe its that we're just as likely to win this one with our bullpen coming in as with Z going back out, and are more likely to win Sunday if Z is pulled.

In other words, the thought could have been - "chances of winning game one with Z coming back out = chances of winning game one with Z leaving.  Chances of winning game four with Z coming back out < chances of winning game four with Z leaving.
Overall chances of winning series with Z leaving > overall chances of winning series with Z coming back out."

I know that presumes Lou thinks in mathematical terms, which is unlikely, but I think you get the point.

Again, maybe it doesn't work out that way, but its a calculated risk.  It's not ludicrous or any such other thing.

And honestly...
...last night I was hoping against hope Z would give 7 innings and the Cubs would be up one.  I have less of a problem with yanking him after 6 since it was a tie game.  If the cubs score 1 more run in the 8th or 9th, then this looks worse.  As it stands, getting beat by the best pitcher in the NL is expected.

Vegas now has shifted AZ to the favorite spot.  Teams winning the 1st game of a short series win the series 70% of the time.  The Cubs must win this game tonight to have a realistic chance of winning this series.  I think Webb in AZ on Tuesday would be too much.  I hope against hope Cub hitters make Davis throw some pitches as he has a tendency to miss spots and walk guys.  Hope he got his one good start v. the Cubs out of the way back in August when he beat Ted 3-1.

The guy behind the plate...
...was dressed in Cubs gear and flashing a lighted Cubs logo at the D'Backs pitcher during the eighth or ninth inning. The announcers noted that he seemed to be employed by either the Cubs or some media organization, given where he was being allowed to sit. Whatever the case, I thought it was a rather embarassing moment for Cubs fans everywhere.

And regarding D'Backs fans, I'm glad to hear they were friendly enough in the park. But I still saw a lot of trash-talking signs -- case in point, the geniuses in the right field (?) bleachers holding up giant white numbers spelling out "1908." I know this is all part of the game, and I probably wouldn't be so sensitive to it if the Cubs had won last night, but it still annoys the hell out of me.

Agreed.
TM's interface and waiting system is far, far better than tickets.com's.

Note, MLB is leaning hard on all teams to switch to tickets.com, as they bought a controlling interest in it (tickets.com) a year or so ago. Only a few teams (Yankees, White Sox, Angels are the most notable) still use ticketmaster.

The Mets, Rockies, Diamondbacks use "evenue.net", which also has a much nicer and user-friendly interface than tickets.com.

MEMO TO CUB FANS GOING TO TONIGHT'S GAME
I'm sorry if this has already been suggested, and I don't know if it was done last night (I watched the game in a crowded and noisy room last night and couldn't hear the audio very well):

Instead of chanting, "Let's go Cubbies", chant "LET'S GO CUBS!"

Why?

D'Backs fans can drown out "Cubbies" with their own two-syllable "Dbacks", the one syllable "Cubs" might confuse them and/or work. They probably will still use "Dbacks" but they don't have a strong monosyllabic word in place of Cubs. Just a suggestion.

Baseball is a game of inches
That's what I told my wife last night about three times.  Zambrano's line drive that was caught would have changed the momentum of the game.  If that ball gets through, Lou's a genius.  Z should have swung on the first pitch of his last at-bat.  And there's no excuse for Soriano taking that fast ball right down the middle in the 9th inning.  It was a big game of cat and mouse.  Fonzie thought "There's no way he's going to throw me a fast ball down the middle."  And then he did it.

And Rami just missed HR's twice on the deep drives to the warning track.  Throw a great game tonight Ted and we'll go back to Chicago 1-1.

Thoughts from Last Night's Game from AZ
I've been reading this site all season and this is my first post - from my hotel room in Scottsdale. Best planned work trip ever!

Last night's game was alot of fun and I was pretty surprised at the loud and vocal Dbacks fans. That being said, they hold nothing to Wrigley and what the Dbacks will see on Saturday. I was told about some rude Cubs fans, but that surprised me because everyone seemed nice and friendly. I was fortunate to have an awesome seat among the season ticket holders and there was quite a decent amount of blue mixed in.

I agree with Al's 20% Cubbies - and I'd like to see us lounder and more vocal tonight. It amazes me how these new ballparks have to tell the fans when to yell. "Beat Da Cubs" was constantly going on the jumbotron. Hopefully Lilly can come out and shut them down while the offense wakes up.

I know we can do it. Oh, and I was able to get in and buy 4 tix for game 2 of the NLCS. A first for me to get playoff tickets.

Let's go Cubbies!

True that... I'm sick of all the second guessing of last night.  29 times out of 30 Marmol holds other teams.  Two freak pitches and all of a sudden people are second guessing Lou.

If Zambrano stays in the game and gives up another homerun, then fans would be second guessing THAT decision.  Sheesh.

first of all,
i don't see how 10-20 pitches saved is a huge difference in terms of Z's ability to pitch effectively in game 4; second, there is no guarantee we'll even have a game four. there's a possibility that was the last time Z will pitch for the cubs this year; i would have let him start the inning at least.

NLCS Scheduling Home vs. Away scenario?
When Cubs get to the next round, which games are Home vs. Away? I assume we do not have home advantage vs. Rockies/Phillies since there were only 3 games offered for sale, but is it 3-3-1, 2-3-2, 2-2-1-1-1?

Actually, if the Cubs make it to the next round they would have home field against the Rockies, as the Cubs won their division outright and the Rockies are the wild card team. If the Phillies make it then they would have home field as they had the better record.

Dead man walking
That's how I felt walking back to the hotel after last night's game. For some reason I ended up in a long line going into a small parking lot after the game. Obviously security wasn't prepared for the mass of humanity leaving that route. It took almost 30 minutes just to escape that way.

Notes on the ballpark. It's no big deal. Not great. Not terrible. Food OK. However I was amazed that the DBack fans needed electric signs to cause them to chant. They waited until 2 were outs in the 9th until rising to cheer their team. On the other hand, most everyone was very pleasant. I heard a ton of misinformation about the Cubs from fans. Some were wondering why Soriano wasn't starting at 2B, etc.

I was surprised Z got pulled after 85 pitches. He had reached 95 on the gun in the previous inning. But I understood Piniella's thinking as soon as Marmol hit the mound. I don't know that I agree with it, but I can understand the logic behind it.

Props to zambranofan for calling out before the game the possibility of Marmol having problems.

Note on Zambrano. He was throwing many off speed pitches last night and they were getting quick outs. It was also great to see him get outs after going 3-0 on some key hitters.

I wasn't surprised by the loss last night. Webb was perhaps 80% first pitch strikes and that's a dangerous weapon for a quality pitcher. We were at a disadvantage last night going against Webb at his home. However, the next 3 games set up very positively for us. Unless one of our starters has a breakdown, we shouldn't need a 5th game.

It's not to late to go to Soto.

Chase Field
I'm not impressed with it. From where I was sitting I found there to be too much advertising with too many flashing lights. It was quite annoying. There's nothing charming about the place. Give me Wrigley any time.

As for the fans, the D-back fans around me were into the game and certainly not obnoxious. There was one obnoxious Cubs fan a couple of rows behind me, but he was harmless -- just way too loud and didn't stop talking the entire time. And, I think he may have had too many beers as he rooted for Z when Marmol was pitching!

Now, for game 2. I have the same seats I had last night.

GO CUBS!!!!

No taunt...
Here is what I posted yesterday in the BCB game thread:

"FWIW game one wins have meant...

"...nothing to the Yankees over the last two years when they've won game one of the ALDS and then went on to lose the series.

"A win on Thursday and Cubbie fans get what they really needed from the first two away games, one victory."

Win today and leave AZ in good shape.

On a side note too...

I frankly was not that well acquainted with the D-Backs as a team until I reviewed their roster heading into the NLDS.  I was frankly surprised by what I saw.  The D-Backs don't look all that intimidating, at least theoretically and I think the Cubbies have the better team and should win the series.

Anybody else on the east coast not able to finish watching the game due to sleepiness?  It's bad enough the games goes past midnight, but then to have the somnabulence-inducing Darling giving the "color" commentary ... mmph.  He made me yearn for the excitement of Lou Boudreau broadcasting the game.  The Cubs definitely got the "D" team from TBS.

An observation from the game...
I was sitting about 20 rows behind home plate last night, which is my usual location for regular season games.  One of the reasons I like to sit there is that, with my poor depth perception, I can tell almost from contact when a ball is going to leave the park.

When Reynolds hit the ball in the 7th last night, I thought it had NO chance of being a HR.  I remember thinking, aw, he got under that one.  I really didn't even think it would make the warning track. I was shocked when it left the yard.

Anybody else think that?  How did it look on TV?

by jazzman56 on Oct 4, 2007 1:02 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

re: An observation from the game...
I was watching on TV, and I thought he got under it, too. I figured it would be one of the deep fly outs that Marmol is wont to give up from time to time. The pitch must have hit the absolute most perfect part of the bat, because it really flew.

Interesting Crowd Commensts
Al - your take on the crowd seems to be similar to what the guys at AZ Snakepit are saying. That makes sense.

I think folks in Arizona (despite their title) are too divided amongst who they cheer for (due to the community and team being relatively young, all the spring training teams, and the Dodgers having had a stronghold on the area for awhile) to be too anti-Cubs or nearly anyone else.

People in Phoenix are used to having visiting fans in droves at nearly every sport (check out a Cardinals game when the Cowboys are in town sometime).

Dear Cub Nation
I know we should protect our team but come on,  Lou F-ed up last night.

It was a questionable decision to pull Z after 6 and then Marmol made Lou look like fool in the 7th.

It was also a questionable decision to let Z hit in the 5th instead of making him bunt The Riot over to third and Z made Lou look like a fool when he didn't hit the ball to the right side.

The simple fact is that Lou had a bad game.  His moves helped the Cubs lose last night and I'm as down on him as I would be at JJ or Ronny C after they strike out with the bases loaded.

The safe play is to try to win the game last night at all costs.  Lou didn't go with the safe plays and it blew up in his face.  He F-ed up.  But I still love the guy and I'm hope his hunches will work out tonight and we get a big win.

Also I strongly believe we are in a must win game tonight.  Otherwise we will have to win 3 in a row including facing Brandon Webb again on 4 days rest.

Go Cubs!

The Bunt with Zambrano....
...would have been the right play but for two factors that are not to be discounted:
  1. Carlos is not a good bunter.  I'd sooner have him hack away than try to bunt.  If it was a pitcher like Suppan, definately, but not Carlos
  2. Fonzie is a strikeout risk and Webb is a hardcore groundball pitcher.  The odds Fonzie can elevate one to score a run from third with one out are also low.  Plus Fonzie had struck out with a runner on 2nd and no out before - no sense giving up an out when the guy hitting with 1 out would be a K threat
I think Lou did OK there.  Zambo almost knocked the run in himself.  JJ got an RBI single taken away by Clark.  Sure hope the Cubs can get things even tonight.  My game stomach is already starting.

re: The Bunt with Zambrano....
I agree. Just because Lou orders Z to bunt doesn't mean Z will be able to actually get the bunt down. He could have just easily struck out (net result: the same) or bounced one to Webb or the catcher either freezing Theriot (net result: the same) or, worst of all, getting Theriot gunned down at third (net result: worse).

Some thoughts on tonight's game
I know Al will no doubt cover this in his Game Preview, but here are some insights into tonight's critical match-up.

Much is being made of the the August 25th game where Davis faced Lilly in a game won by the D'Backs 3-1.  I was at that game and here are some observations.

Craig Monroe started in RF that day and he was, frankly, putrid.  He went 0-4 and left 5 men on base.  Davis pitched one of his usual games, with men on base almost every inning and he used Monroe as his bail out time after time.

Murton went 3-4.  Expect him to be in the line-up tonight.  DeRosa and Jones also went 0-4, as Davis is prone to use hitter's aggressiveness to get them to chase out of the strike zone.

Soriano did not play that game.  Kendall was the catcher and he, Theriot, D. Lee and Ramirez all had hits.

As far as the D'Backs were concerned, the big blow was a 2 run HR by Conor Jackson off Lilly.  Expect Jackson to get the start at 1st tonight.  Upton had 2 hits (I would anticipate him to play tonight also), including a 7th inning RBI single off Kerry Wood for an important tack on run and Lyon and Valverde closed it out, much like last night.

Hudson (who is now out), Byrnes, Snyder and Drew also had hits.  Chris Young went 0-4 and Jeff Cirillo went 0-3.  Reynolds did not play.

by jazzman56 on Oct 4, 2007 1:43 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Justin Upton...
...was hit by a pitch on the last day of the season on the wrist.  Right Handed batter Carlos Quinten will more than likely make the start against Lilly instead of lefty Jeff Salazar.

I think Upton is only available for pinch running and defense.

Lou's real mistake
I don't think pulling Z was the mistake. I think perhaps using Marmol was. Marmol is best suited to holding leads as opposed to pitching in a tie game. This was also his first playoff game. A bit jittery I would expect. I think the best choice would have been Wood, who has been quite good recently, is the kind of pitcher who can mow guys down, and has major postseason experience.

come on
That's just crazy.  At the time, Lou correctly believed Marmol was his best reliever.  He's been using him in spots like that all year, and he's been the best guy the Cubs had all year.  Better than Howry, way better than Dempster, and better than Wood/Wuertz, etc.

The move did not work out well, as often happens in this most unpredictable sport.  Doesn't mean Lou made a mistake in trusting the team's best reliever in that situation.

is because people on this board were thinking "well the D-backs are gonna be easy to beat" and "they overachieved." I think it stunned people to see that the D-Backs have a good team. They won 90 games for a reason. Even though they did technically overachieved, doesn't mean that they won't give a hell of a fight..

Not a chance.
We are all aware of the Cubs' inability to beat them, especially in Arizona.
I would not fight Jason Kendall.

Is it me or do people seem a great deal
more tense than yesterday.

I still believe this is a must win game tonight.

Go Cubs!

underestimated az...
I think we had this feeling of invincibility and inevitability last night, a feeling that has been echoed throughout the media.  For some reason, we think that after all this time, the World Series is owed to us.

The tension that we feel is the truth -- that Arizona is not overmatched and won 90 games for a reason.  Perhaps some of that "Cubbie Swagger" has gone to the heads of the players as well.

Respectfully disagree
We're Cubs fans. We sweat EVERYTHING. We could be playing a JV high school team and still find ways to worry. We're just suprsised they came out so flat.

Yup
you can stick a fork in the Phillies.

Would you expect any different from Philadelphia sports fans?

Would you have said...
... "stick a fork in the Padres" after they lost the first two games in Chicago in 1984?

Or "stick a fork in the Marlins" after they went down 3-1 to the Cubs in 2003?

I agree, Philly looks defeated. But ANYTHING can happen in a short series, especially heading to Coors Field for two games with those good Philly bats.

Diffference
Neither of those teams were on the type of roll that the Rockies are on right now.

And the Rockies have the best home record in the NL and the best overall record in the NL since June 1st.

If the Phillies dig out of this hole it will be much more surprising to me than the 2003 Marlins, the 1984 Padres or the 2004 Red Sox.

the rockies go home for two games
they will without a doubt win one of those games. Philly just looks lost out there..

Jump
Did anyone else hear last night when Byrnes was announced last night, the played Van Halen's Jump in the background? The is the Cubs song, they should not be allowed to use it.

by drodd on Oct 4, 2007 4:40 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

They have been doing that
ever since Byrnes joined the D'Backs.

Since players get to choose what song is played as they come to the plate, I suggest you take it up with Byrnesie.
