Open Thread: NLDS Game #3 -- Cubs vs. Diamondbacks, Saturday 10/6, 5:00 CT

Three words:

Must. Win. Today.

There are four teams that have come back from a 0-2 deficit to win a Division Series. One of them was the 1995 Mariners, who finished the regular season with a 17-5 run to win the AL West, then came back against the Yankees after losing the first two games -- on the road. Their manager? Lou Piniella. 1995 was also the only season, before this year, where all four Division Series started 2-0.

Yes, I am well aware that was twelve years ago, and history isn't necessarily a predictor. But if anyone will have his team prepared to win the next three games -- and this Cub team has, as you know, tended to be a very streaky team -- it's Lou.

vs. Ari -- vs. Cubs
A lot of you are going to bitch about Jason Kendall starting today, especially since Geovany Soto has hit the only Cub HR in the series. (Incidentally, there has been only one other rookie Cub who has homered in a postseason game -- Frank Demaree, who homered in game 4 of the 1932 World Series.) Lou, however, is a big believer in matchups. Kendall is 11-for-31 (.355/.394/.452) lifetime vs. Hernandez. There's the reason. Other current Cubs have hit him, too: Cliff Floyd, 14-for-41 (.341/.429/.561), 3 doubles, 2 HR; Aramis Ramirez, 10-for-26 (.385/.385/.962), 3 doubles, 4 HR, and Mark DeRosa, 5-for-14 (.357/.400/.500), 2 doubles. Hernandez is 4-3, 2.92 at Wrigley Field in his career, but has not pitched there since May 16, 2006, when the Cubs beat him 4-0 in one of the seven games they won that month. Hernandez was second in the majors (to Woody Williams) in HR allowed this season with 34 -- so maybe, just maybe, the Cubs can get their power bats going on what is going to be a summerlike early evening, with the gametime temperature likely to be near 80 degrees with the wind blowing out.

Rich Hill faced the Diamondbacks on July 21 at Wrigley Field, gave them only one earned run in six innings, and got a no-decision; the Cubs lost that game when Bob Howry allowed a deciding HR to Stephen Drew. Hill threw great against the Reds a week ago in Cincinnati, giving them only one hit in six shutout innings. He has held all current D'backs to a .220 average in his career (9-for-41); the only current D'back who has homered off him is Eric Byrnes. Tonight, Hill becomes the 8th lefthander to start a postseason game for the Cubs (Ted Lilly, 2007; Steve Trout, 1984; Ray Prim, 1945; Larry French, 1935; Hippo Vaughn, 1918; Lefty Tyler, 1918; and Jack Pfiester, 1906-07-08, are the others).

We're in good company.
Lots of stats have been thrown out about the ability of teams who are down 0-2 in the series to come back. We'll see how that history plays out this weekend I'm sure--the Cubs are only 1 of 4 teams who face the same 2 game deficit--the Yankees, Phillies and Angels all have to win their next game to keep alive.

Why don't we show them all how it's done..?

Go Cubs!

Let's Go Get 'Em
Hopefully, a change of scenery and a return home will be just what the Cubs need to get grounded and focused.

The first two games seemed like they didn't really even exist - with the latenight starts and the resulting obscurity (and I'm talking to you, TBS), it's no wonder they didn't seem to show up.  Games might as well have been in the twilight zone.

Time to wake up and lock in.

That's NO excuse
And the players would agree.
In obscurity? Both games were sold out, or close to it. (In reality, 48K is too big of a ballpark for the market)

The games were on national TV. The games were on national radio. It's YOUR perception these games were obscure, if you live in the CST or EST.  Staying up late to watch baseball might strike you as unusual. These games ran in prime time in two other time zones.

What about the era when TV was scarce? As late at the 1970's, many teams didn't televise but a handful of games, most of them on the road. (The Chicago market was one of the major exceptions)
Did the players 'not show up' in that era? For example, the Dodgers, until the 1980s -- NEVER televised home games.

And, it appears the print media/radio talk shows have had they say about what happened in Arizona Played in obscurity? Put the Devil Rays in that category, not the Cubs.

The Cubs are far from being ignored. There's plenty of attention -- unfortunately, it's for all the wrong reasons.

I was very happy to hear
John "my wife finds me disgusting" Kruk pick the Phillies as the one team that he thought as the most likely of all the 0-2 teams to come back.  It seems that all the experts have moved off the Cubs (this Kruk comment is typical of them).

I like these contra-indicators.  The Cubs came into the NLCS as a heavy favorite.  Now no one likes them.  Good.

Time to MAN UP Cubs and stomp the Snakes.  Let's get 'em today!!  Score early and often.

Prince Fielder...he is neither.

by LAcarl519 on Oct 6, 2007 12:28 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

The Phillies?
Kruk's comments on this issue are crazy.  Of all of the teams, the Phillies are in the deepest hole.  In the other three the home team basically held serve.  Something which is not unexpected.  In the case of the Phillies, the Visitors won both games and are going home for two at a park with a tremendous Home Field Advantage for the home team.  The team most likely to get swept is the Phillies.

As for the rest, I think that the Yankees have the best chance to win 3 in a row.   They have had pretty good success against the Indians this season and have a good deal of experience in the post season.   I think that the Cubs have the second best chance, but its mostly a puncher's chance if the offense heats up a great deal very quickly.  With the singular exception of Lilly, the Cub pitching has been very good and should continue to be very good for the rest of the series.  As the Cubs HAVE to win three, I would also be inclined to "save" Zambrano for a game 5 rematch against Webb.  I would have Marquis start but I would also have some of my Bull Pen pitchers warming up before the start of the game and keep him on a very tight leash.

Kruk is the same ding dong that said
in early September .. "Shame on the Cubs for allowing the Cards to sneak back into the race."

What astute baseball analytical genius. As if the Cubs played the Red Turds 7 days a week.

And while the Cubs destroyed STL the rest of the month, I wonder what ol' Kruky was doing. Turning his wife off, I assume.

Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!

The marathon...
... is tomorrow. Runners will still be going within four blocks of the ballpark (corner of Addison & Broadway) when people are starting to arrive for the game.

Why MLB and TBS insisted on the noon start time, with thousands of people and thousands of spectators clogging north side streets at the same time, is absolutely beyond me. It's idiotic. The race director was quoted as saying "it won't be a problem."

Yes, it will be. If you're going to the game tomorrow, I cannot emphasize this enough, do not attempt to drive. You'll get caught in horrendous traffic jams.

I wish I could be in the park this afternoon because if there is ever a chance a teams fans could will a team to a victory this is the right place, the right stadium and the right fans. key for todays game IMO...
Cubs need an early spark, a early run, a great defensive play, a stolen base, a big strikeout by Hill. Something to get a good vibe going early and make Wrigley rock and get old Mo moving this direction!!

I'm shocked it's not a sign for
Frank TV.  Since 7 out of 8 teams in the play-offs will end up with bad memories, do you think TBS is being smart running those annoying spots 100 times in every game?

I mean the spots are funny once or twice, but to see the same 5 inpersonations hundreds of times just associtates Frank TV with lousy memories for 7 teams' fans.

Hopefully it will be for D'back fans and not Cub fans as I hope we have to put up with this crap for three more games and the NLCS after that!

Let's go get 'em, Cubs!!!

It's too bad the Cubs won't sweep the Dbcks

by JFCubFan on Oct 6, 2007 3:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You've got questions, I have answers.
  1. The signage IS for the TV viewer. I'm sure the CF camera will capture that as much as possible. I'm sure Fox is hoping for 2 games in Chicago. (As is TBS)
  2. We are hard-core. We will find the games. However, as hard as many will find it hard to believe, not everybody lives and dies with baseball. (Shocking!!) Therefore, this signage -- is aimed at the casual viewer. For today's possible elimination game (and the others)thousands may be tuning in for the very first time. I'd wager these people probably struggled to figure out TBS had the games to begin with. And then, if you want to capture viewers for the Series -- "hey, the games move to Fox." You literally have to spell it out for people. I'm not saying these viewers are stupid -- they are just not really paying attention. This isn't that important to them, it's just another baseball game.
  3. Repetition. That works in advertising, and promotion. Many of us are watching every game on TBS. Guess what? Us hardcore are in the minority. Therefore we are going to see the promos for "Frank TV" waaaaaaay more times than the average viewer. TBS (and any other advertiser) knows that many 'impressions' have to be left before a message sinks in.
Working in radio, at times I am aghast at the people who cannot remember what stations they listen to, are unable to recall call letters or slogans when they are asked to write them down. The listeners/viewers inability to recall what they are watching or listening to means a loss of money, and sometimes jobs, in the broadcast industry.

The spots are repetitive to you and I, but the investment that TBS/Fox makes in the games (and the ability to lure viewers to additional programming) makes these messages crucial.

Seems like overkill? That's the point.

A case to be made for optimism.....
As depressing as the last 2 games have been, if you want to re-live some more depressing times, just go back and watch games 5-7 of the 2003 NLCS.....which for some reason I did over the last 36 hrs....not all of it, but I did rewatch the entire game 6.....THAT's about as depressing as it can get to be a Cubs fan.  However, watching that and thinking back to the postseasons of the last 15 or so years, interestingly I found a silver lining in this series.

Baseball is a game of averages and streakiness....and if so, there is no reason that this team cannot come back from down 2...tough, yes it will be, but here's  few thoughts as to why this team can come back.....

-the very same players that have caused us much frustration (Lee, Ramirez, Soriano) with their poor plate attack, are the same players that in the past have been just as streaky in previous offseasons. In 2003, prior to game 5 of the NLCS, Ramirez had been lights out for the Cubs.....however, was essentially absent the rest of the way.  Also, prior to game 6, Derrek Lee had been atrocious for the Marlins.....but who was it that hit the crucial base hit to give the Marlins the 4-3 lead in that dreaded game 6?..that's right Lee.   If history is on our side, all of these guys should collectively escape their horrid pace and break out tonight and through the rest of this series anyway....

-regarding the concern of Webb being a dominator of the Cubs a second time, history's really not convincingly on his side.  Growing up, it was common for the aces to completely dominate in the entire offseason (Jack Morris, Saberhagen, Gooden and the likes)...you don't see that quite as often now.  Not saying Webb would flop if given the second chance, however, again in 2003 look at Josh Beckett, who was lit pretty well in game 1, but came back in game 5 and 7 to be lights out.....or Wood/Prior who were so dominant early only to get hit pretty hard eventually.  There are examples both ways on this one and probably just as much evidence to suggest Webb may be just as dominant as he was the first time around, but I can't believe he will be that dominant the second time around.  I fully believe Lilly to be much better the second time around as well.......

-breaks, breaks, breaks.  The Cubs capitalized on the breaks in 2003 in games 2,3,4, but the Marlins did so in games 1,6, 7.   The team that takes advantage of the other teams mistakes and makes the most of the breaks given to them usually wins.....we've seen that in BOTH games this offseason.  Even in game 2, the Cubs had a chance to tie that game  in the ninth after being given the breaks (Ojeda's error) yet our fastball hitters both struck out on fastballs right down the plate.    This has got to change and can change in a heartbeat.

That 2003 series was definitely more depressing than this one.....and is history that probably shouldn't be revisited....however, it was a good reminder to me of a mixed bunch of guys (the Marlins) with an old school manager (like Lou) who didn't quit at all, kept their cool and prevailed.  This team is similar to that team with a good mix....It's gotta start tonight with one game at a time....I've not lost complete confidence yet...but its' gotta start now.

Let's get em!

Lou is Shrewd
He knew this could go three games or five.

We could win the next 3 games.

Our bats must wake up of course.  Z will HAVE to be excellent tomorrow. I like putting that kind of pressure on him to contain himself.  He needs it.  And we know Lily can produce after 3 days rest.

For all those who complain about 3 days rest - get over it.  That is the way it used to be and many pitchers felt they were better for it.  Fergie Jenkins made 50 starts one year for Christ's Sake.

And Kendall is good for Hill.

They must be patient and make Livian work and square up the ball, kinda like how the DBacks approach their ab's. If not, then this will be the most futile playoff performance by a playoffs team, ever.

What it means is....
They're trying to hit monster home runs on every pitch.  More often than not, this leads to a strikeout.

One at a time.
I keep saying that to myself.  Yet I can't imagine that there will not be a game 4 tomorrow.  I can't see past that, but why bother?

I have seen this team come back from so many tough errors or bad holes that they have dug for themselves.  This is another one of those holes.  I just beleive that we will see a strong effort and victory today.

Today they stop digging and climb out of the hole.  Every journey begins with a first step.

Game 3 is step one.  GO CUBS!!

Shouldn't bring Wisconsin favorites into this discussion. I have a feeling that, oh, I don't know....many residents of Illinois are...fans of....ILLINOIS.

I was hoping the trifecta wouldn't hit Chicagoland/and the state of Illinois this weekend . But, at least as of now -- we are guaranteed 1 out of 4.

Real good sign for the Cubbies
So I'm sitting there, watching ASU plod their way through another 1st quarter against WSU, and just cracked open my first Sam Adams Octerberfest of the year, which is traditional for me this time every year and just smelled the succulant aroma it sends off to greet it's owner, when a knock on the door interrupts my heavenly routine.

It's UPS. With a box. Hm. I don't remember buying anything recently. I sign and shut the door holding this box.  Shake. very light. Is it my birthday? No, not for another month.

And what do I see when I lift the folds back but a Cub hat! THAT'S RIGHT!!! Ofcourse!! I had completely forgotten I had ordered a Cub had 1 month ago!!! ANd it just now comes today, of all days?? How had I forgotten I ordered a Cub hat? Oh that's right, that's about the time I started into Bears mode.

Apparently it got lost and there's a note saying how sorry they are and to call a UPS CSR to find out more information. I've never been so happy to receive a package a month late.

And it's a fitted hat. and it fits perfectly. Oh what a day. The Cubs will not lose today. It's fate.

Bumped into a Cub fan in Wally world this AM ..
.. being a Chicago boy trapped in Tennessee right now, I found myself - wearing a Cubs T and my old Cub cap - being confronted by a woman and her 14 year old daughter with a pained look on her face.

"Are they gonna do it today? They gonna make it."

Frankly, I just looked at her and told her "Yes, absolutely. It's the Cardiac Cubs .. they're back home and they are going to keep it exciting to the end."

I'm ready for the real excitement. GO CUBS!

how did TBS's strike zone say that
called third strike was low when it crossed the front of the plate?  It seems that ball was ABOVE the knees when it crossed the front of the plate.  Very strange.

Doesn't matter, the call was right...but the "computer" seems wierd.

Going to assume
He worked it out on 27 outs.  So you could only divide 2 into 26.

Rather than 3 ours per inning meaning you can only hit into 2 once per inning.

by Arbusto on Oct 6, 2007 6:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

theoretically, WRONG.
did you just divide 27 by two to come up with that? i know you're upset about the game/series, but, i mean, come on.

there is no theoretical maximum, because with extra innings the game could theoretically go on forever. however, there would be a maximum of one double play per team per inning. so for a 9-inning game, the maximum per team would be nine double plays. can't have more than one in an inning.

Worst playoff perf. ever
If cubs don't rally this will be by far the worst playoff performance of their 5 cracks at glory; we all know how close they came in 03 and 84. 89 they won one I believe and in 98 they came close to a W in Atlanta with a great game by Tappani and then Wood lost G3 at home in miserable conditions.

It happens but I gotta believe the G1 loss and 2nd guessing kinda did them in as far as momentum....Ariz was young and hungry and very opportunistic; Cubs were more experienced but overanxious and played dumb esp. with AB's swinging at horrible pitches in G2 all night.

Beginning to think they'll never get there w/o more disciplined hitters...a new hitting coach might be the first step.

It's err-OR
It's pronounced err-OR, you douche bag.  Last time I checked, eras took a lot longer to commit, and are committed collectively, not by a single person. Gimme a break.  I was thinking if they mixed up color guys and announcers from each team, then the games would be called much more accurately. They are mis-assessing most of these players (ie Fontenot), and it's impossible to gain any insight into the D-backs players when the national media hasn't been paying any attention to them all year.  It's a bad formula, and really compromises the integrity of the coverage, no matter how many cameras they have covering the game.  Len and Mark Grace? That would be decent.  Or whoever the D-backs guy is with Brenly would probably work too.....

the owners made a huge splash and it worked. remember, we won 66 games last year and had dusty baker in the dugout.

this year, we won the division. that's certainly success. let's win the division next year and take another shot. next goal: secure home field advantage.

oh, and got to change the approach at the plate. i think a new hitting coach is in order.

hopefully, this is year one of a braves like run.

I guess I don't understand
Soriano is a record setter for lead-off hrs.  Aramis and Lee hit over .300 for the season (I think).  We won 19 more games this year than we lost last year.

What do you change about the team?  Seriously, it's a real question, what do you change?

I agree
a week ago, two weeks ago, we were talking about this, when they were in Florida, and even in Cincy.  We definitely need to hit better -- this series is proof of that, if nothing else.

But I get the feeling that some people want wholesale change from the top down; I'm wondering what that is.  Dump Z?  Sori?  ARAM?  Lee?

This is our time. THIS IS OUR YEAR!

by drewishdrewid on Oct 6, 2007 7:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

drewishdrewid, here is my suggestions...
for next year:
  1. Fire Jim Hendry, then look for a General Manager that can see and judge talent that will fit with our club.
  2. Tell Lou that he is going to have to replace Rothschild and whoever the hitting coach is (I really don't know the guys name, I guess that says something right there. He's been missing as have our hitters), and hire men who can teach.
  3. Hire the best scouts you can find, even from other organizations. Offer them more money, offer them an opportunity to restore a historic franchise back to dignity. Then let them have free reign to sign guys without intererence from the suits.
  4. If Lou will not go along with these changes, then tell him it was a good job he did, but not good enough for us. Then go hire Joe Giradi.
I don't know which players should go, but you do not gut your franchise. These guys have had a terrific season, but something is missing.
I loved it when Harry cried, "Cubs Win, Cubs Win!"

by Ken Hubbs on Oct 6, 2007 7:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Can't make huge changes.
In the event that A-Ram can be moved, I'd consider it. The man seems to take very little pleasure in playing baseball. Say what you will about Soriano, at a minimum, he recognizes that he's playing a game, and plays with joy.

A-Ram and Lee are much quieter. I think that too many of those types are suicide for a team.

Of course, I would NOT trade A-Ram unless there were a spectacular player in return - for instance, as part of a major deal for Alex Rodriguez.

The primary thing that Hendry must do is acquire a power-hitting right fielder. Cliffy did what he could this year, but it is the end of the line.

I'd re-up Kerry Wood and consider him for 9th inning duty, and I'd try to sign Mark Prior before arbitration, to a 1 year deal at a raise from his 2007 salary, with a team option for 2009 at, say, $8M. Prior should enter 2008 as the 6th starter. I find it difficult to believe that he cannot outperform Jason Marquis. In either case, the loser of this rotation battle should be moved at the 2008 ASB.

If possible, acquire a platoon partner for Felix Pie in CF, and acquire another LOOGY. But those things can be addressed later.

No major changes - this team needs to get into the "Boston" mindset. We're going to lose playoff series, but goddamn it, we're going to contend for the playoffs every year, because this is an unfair system and we have the most money.

by ClosingTime on Oct 7, 2007 12:09 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

soriano should not be leading off,
especially when he can't run. he should bat fifth or sixth. and he HAS to develop some plate discipline. until then, lou should call some takes from the dugout.

i also think the cubs need to revamp their scouting/preparation/advance work--they always seem to have a poor approach, especially against junkballers. so, new video guy, new hitting coach. something.

strengthen the pen. try to find some young arms or at least some reliable arms (not trachsel) for the rotation.

You really don't get it do you?
No wonder we haven't won in 99 years and has been consistently setting new levels of suckitude. We barely scratched our way into the post season. Our offense has been iffy through out the season. Our outfield is a mess (thats one of the things I want to change) and can't hit for power. The mistakes we committed through out the season have come haunting us in the post season. And still you can't see anything that needs change? Cardinals team has been awful through out the season, Brewers had a young ball club that just couldn't keep up the pace and lost the game of who can sink more. So in this division it is completely understandable that there are some people who aren't ^content^ that they won the darn Division.

1 run of Livian is incredible
not sure how to explain the lack of clutch hitting, to me this whole team just seemed to be pressing the entire series.   DeRo AB was the last straw, he would never do that in the regular season.  These guys had the chance to be heros to the city and  most the nation, but they were simply too scared to step up.  Everything good that occured this season has been evaporated with the play the last three games.

I don't think it's fear.  Anxiety, sure.  But not fear.

I think worst to first in the division is an accomplishment that is not washed away by a bad post-season.  If the Yankees get swept by the Indians, does that somehow reduce their achivements?  Or the Phillies, who had a thrilling end of the season?

I don't.

About the only asset he's had going for him is speed. Mrs Cubnational and I were in the stands in Atlanta in April when he was starting and watched him leg out a triple. I stood there mouth agape as he flew around the bases.

I don't understand this attitude
first of all, the club does NOT do thing for the fans.  They do things to make money.

Secondly, baseball is a long-term sport.  Greg Maddux is STILL pitching, for example.  Look at Cal Ripkin.  You bring players up through the minors, and groom them for the show.  To go up 16 games in one season is a pretty big deal.

Thirdly, this team is definitely not the same team it was in 2003 or 1998 or any other season.  This team has good experience, and good youth.  But you cannot blame this team for the 99 year streak.

Lastly, baseball is a game of streaks and luck.  No doubt we all agree that this series has been bad luck for us.  Some of it has definitely been bad play, some of it, tho, really has been luck.

Sometimes, it just doesn't happen.

If they can keep this going next year, they're in a MUCH better situation going into the post season.

I wanted to win as much as you, I'm sure.  I'm sad that it looks like they're not going to.  But there is -always- next year.

as he slams the door on yet another Cubs season. Thanks for saving the greatest of heartaches for the home crowd and not for the road. We know you love the hometown fans.....

This is the right place to confess this sin ..
.. last year, after the last out of that nightmare season, I put my  B E L I E V E bracelet on and vowed to not remove it until we won the Series.

It has been on my right wrist since then.

Tonight, my right wrist might finally get a break ..

Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!

Why give up only after one year?
That's not a large commitment, hell, I had a hemp necklace on for like 5 years during high school and afterwards.

The boos sound different tonight...
Not vicious, not anger, just pure disappointment.  I hope the players hear that, they should be disgusted with themselves in this series.

Dbcks 4 runs on 8 hits
Cubs 1 run on 7

by JFCubFan on Oct 6, 2007 8:09 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah but the Cubs lead in the most
important category; the strikeout by pitchers. They have 12 and DBacks pitchers have 2. Who's laughing now, eh?

Well, the Cardiac Cubs are starting it again ..
.. ah! spoke too soon.

Base hit by Mark promptly smothered by a routine pop fly.

I'd say we're beyond the episode phase.

We are in full cardiac arrest and the defib is four floors down.

Actually the eternal optimists in the other thread
seem to be more worried about the lack of ~class in this thread than about the fact that the DBacks are humiliating the Cubs and are hammering nails on their coffin.

Ashamed
The offensive should be ashamed for their performance.  The pitching was good enough to win two of these games...

well .. one last hurrah ..
Kerry Wood comes on to pitch.

What a perfectly surreal, bittersweet way to end the bullpen's misfiring this year.

Let's go Kerry, give us one last chance to cheer

EXCEPTION CLAUSE:
.. assuming the Cubs go the way of all baseball flesh and back into hibernation, I will have a life.

.. Of course, the Cardiac Cubs could stage the greatest comeback in recent memory in the bottom of the inning. My great tolerance to pain would arouse me enough to come back to the TV tommorrow, God willing.

That would be swell.

But I'm not holding my breath.
