Fukudome Will Play In USA
No, really -- it was reported in the Japanese media early Sunday, and confirmed by this post at sfgate.com:
The Nikkansports article (here is the original Japanese language article if anyone wishes to try to make an accurate translation) says that the Cubs, White Sox and Padres are the three teams interested. No other MLB teams are mentioned.
Prediction: this is done by the middle of the week and he becomes a Cub. Hat tip: MLBTR

We can reconstruct
Fukudome decided on Wednesday or Thursday to come to America. (Not that there was much of a chance that he'd stay once he knew there were big offers here) Word leaked out, probably through his agent's office.
For Fukudome to have not told Yomiuri first of his intentions would have been insulting to the team almost synonymous with Japanese baseball. (And is also owned by the largest media conglomerate in the country.) So they backtracked and said no decision had been made.
This weekend, Fukudome sat down with the Kyojin and had a conversation that went something like "It is with great sadness that I must decline your generous offer, in order to pursue my dreams of testing myself against the best competition in the world. I know this is selfishness on my part and I humbly apologize."
Now he'll get everyone's final offer on Monday and almost certainly sign with the Cubs by the end of the week. The indications are all there--the White Sox are dropping hints about an Aaron Rowand's return, the Padres are deep in talks with Mike Cameron and the Rangers have talked to Corey Patterson's people. The Cubs are the only team reported to be in the hunt (unless KC is really serious) that hasn't been connected to another outfielder. The only real rumor is the Raul Ibañez one, and that was shot down by the Mariner beat writer.
SF was also rumored early

My guess is...
I think the White Sox
That's what will make the Cubs signing Fukudome all that much better.

It seems like
Anything additional would be a bonus. Of course adding Bedard would be a perfect trifecta.
Roberts...

Add Hill and Pie

so ...
It's not that the Cubs don't have the pieces to trade. It's that I don't think they'll give up the pieces that would be necessary. I would be SHOCKED if Hendry trades Marmol and/or Hill.
I would agree with that
by NO100 on Dec 9, 2007 10:52 AM CST up reply actions
I would not trade Hill to get Bedard.
Just my $0.02.
Bedard
That said, I don't think Bedard would be SO much better that he would be worth giving up Hill AND a lot of other pieces (say Marmol AND Murton). But if it's the right deal ...
The Questioin Is...
In hearing Piniella in May of last year, he seemed hesitant with adding Marshall as the fifth starter after Miller/Guzman. It seemed to work fine, but he really didn't have much other choice.
Now, given the choice, would they want to go with a rotation of 3 lefties? Maybe that's why they have supposedly reported that they are not going after Bedard (likely because in all instances swapping one starting pitcher for another does not have that much incremental gain. So, if anything, Bedard would be added without losing Hill).
Leads us all back to that 'pen log jam. What's next?
One week at a time... let's land Fukudome by Wednesday. Let's root for Tejada to go somewhere, as that would increase the likelihood of a Roberts deal to the Cubs triggering.
Look at how little
The difference is...
- The Tigers have absolutely gutted their farm system, and they had a better farm system than us.
- They only gave up "nothing" if you don't value young talent. Which isn't a good way to, well, do about anything in baseball.
6 Prospects
Usually trades contain an element of negativity on both sides. Yet almost universally the Tigers are thought to have pulled off one of the heists of the century.
Would you have even thought about not pulling the lever on this trade if you were a Tigers fan?
You and I must be reading different everybodies.
Guess what? I'm not a Tigers fan. We don't HAVE that kind of a farm system, and we don't HAVE that sort of a team.
Here's a link
Almost universal applause. As for ranking the farm systems, here's a link rating us 4th and the Tigers 7th.
http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/ranking-organizations/
Now we can split hairs but the reality is that the Tigers got 2 All Stars, aged 24 and 25. They gave up 2 top prospects, still unproven, along with 4 other guys who will probably never see the majors. I never would have guessed they would have been able to make that deal. But they did. My suggestion is that we need to investigate those type trades. That's not to say we aren't. Just that we should.
I know Hendry likes the free agent business because it doesn't involve prospects. Perhaps he needs to have a more balanced approach towards building a championship team. Maybe then, we can HAVE that sort of team.
I guess I'm not sure
because theriot
As much as Fukudome would be insurance if Pie doesn't come through, so would having Roberts and DeRosa.
If Pie falters, Fukudome could move to center and DeRosa could play every day in right (assuming Murton's an Oriole). That would be acceptable with Fukudome and Roberts, two left-handed hitters, in the lineup.
Several reasons...
Second, Piniella, has repeatedly said he wants to get faster and more athletic. Playing DeRosa over Theriot goes against that philosophy.
Third, Piniella values the super sub player, because he buys into the theory that everybody needs regular rest. By moving DeRosa to this role, he can play DeRosa at 5 position (1B, 2B, 3B, LF, and RF) and give those spots regular rest. Further, if Fukudome can spot start in CF, DeRosa can also effectively sub for Pie by playing RF on the days Pie rests (with Fukudome in CF).
Finally, Piniella seems to think Theriot will be ready to handle the end of the season next year.
Then, if you can hold onto Cedeno as well...
I haven't counted yet, but we should have enough room for all these guys, right?
Latest report for Roberts was either Marshall or Gallagher plus either Cedeno or E. Patterson.
To me, if we can land Roberts while holding onto Cedeno, we're in good shape.
Personally, I think the Cubs have given up on Cedeno as the everyday SS. He was given his chance, multiple times, and was unable to solidify it.
The question is, will the Cubs be all right with keeping him in a utility man role? He can play a little third, a little second, and is shagging fly balls now in center. His speed late in the game can help.
When you say...
Rotoworld doesn't "report" anything itself; it simply picks up other news sources.
This is a reminder for anyone who uses Rotoworld as a "news" source -- always look at the original article that they link, because Rotoworld's summary doesn't always get all the facts straight.
Same thing for any other fantasy site.
Do you consider BCB
Fukudome
But, assuming he's still hitting like that, this can't happen fast enough.
You need to ask yourself
Now to be fair, he struggled in, what, three or four games before being benched? I'm sure if Sadaharo Oh was a more patient manager, he would have come around while still in the starting lineup.
You can see that home run on YouTube. A big blast at Petco off a major league pitcher. (OK, so most major leaguers can take BK Kim deep.) I think he'd be a great addition.
Indifferent to this news.
This is just my opinion, but I think he'll make his decision public tomorrow.
Not going to get remotely excited
The one thing is
LA is a 30 minute plane ride from SD
It looks like
I want the Cubs to get Fukudome, but considering the payroll we already have committed for so many years (and the fact that I think Sori will look like a bad signing in about three years) I just don't think we should do ANYTHING to get this guy.
Yes and no
Seems like Japanese players like Ichiro have a better commitment to staying in shape and preparing, so a long term deal is okay with me.
My only concern is Tyler Colvin. If Pie does pan out, there won't be a spot for Colvin. Someone will have to be moved. And as long as it's for pitching, so be it.

OKay Jim I want Colvin or Pie
Who would you trade?
by puckishcubsfan on Dec 9, 2007 2:01 PM CST up reply actions
Cubs or Padres.
Someone mentioned that it'll be the Cubs because every other suitor is talking to other outfielders. I would say that's because they're all just covering their bases. It kind of worries me that the Cubs aren't doing the same.
This reminds me of the Furcal situation a couple years ago, when Hendry had to scramble for another option at the last minute. The only difference is this time no one will outbid the Cubs like Coletti and the Dodgers did with Furcal.
We'll find out tomorrow!

Padres won't outbid Cubs but
guys to come there or mostly stay there at below market value.
( Giles, Hoffman and now Peavy to a long term deal). The best thing in our favor is that they tend to be cheap. For those of you
who think Fukudome is the answer that is the best thing we have
going. Also while San Diego is a pitchers park they have a fairly
weak line up to put around him.
Anyway don't count your Sushi before it arrives

One should also note...
Well I can't think Bradley was viable
Fukudome just not sure how he will fit in their tight budget and how much less he will take to play in Southern California. Let's just say GMs on teams for which Greg Maddux plays have a nasty tradition of skunking the Cubs. On the other hand we did get Ceda for Walker out of them so you never know.
by jessica on Dec 9, 2007 2:13 PM CST up reply actions
Those were all
Outbidding isn't the only thing
My read on the situation is that Hendry has a backup offer fairly well ready to get Teahen or Ibanez if Fukudome goes elsewhere.
I predict that if the Cubs get Fukudome, Roberts will be 48 hours behind, regardless of where Tejada is. I think the only thing holding up the Roberts trade is Hendry wanting to make sure he has a backup plan he can execute in case he is blindsided by some other team.

when does the Mitchell report come out?
Surprised his agent wouldnt wait and drive up the price when the heads roll.
Yeah
We either do or don't get Fukudome and then I think Hendry has the rest of his moves lined up depending on what happens.
I not only want Fukudome because he seems exactly what we need but getting him for that need means nothing giving up player wise and we can use the players we would have needed to fill that role for other needs.
I had thought Cameron declined
I hope you optimistic fellows are right this time, but again, looking out my window at grey slush, if the money is anywhere close, the guy becomes a Padre.
IF the dice play this way, is our GM going after Brad Wilkerson and Mark Tea-bag as a replacement??
by TheEman on Dec 9, 2007 10:04 AM CST reply actions
Cameron declined arbitration...
prediction for the week
The Orioles trade Tejada and turn to Roberts. The Cubs offer Murton, Gallagher and Cedeno.
Prior is nontendered and becomes San Diego's consolation prize in the Fukudome derby.
Sosa is one of the surprise names NOT in the Mitchell report. The Cubs are largely unscathed in the report.
Granted, Prior is in Another Diary...
"Padres settle with the Cubs' tampering claim pertaining to Mark Prior by offering up a couple million dollars."
:-D
Works for me!

Bradley signs with Texas
Probably means Texas is out of the Fukudome bidding. It also means the Cubs have fewer options if they lose out on Fukudome AND that the Padres could be more desperate.
Reply from K-FUK emails
I did not.
Perhaps Illinois Cub would re-post the links for sending an email to Fukudome?
Every little bit might help...

From my favorite movie
Please let him be a Cub!!!!
All of us together now.....
and out focused mental energies help this deal come about in the next 24 hrs.
Go Cubs!!!!
Being doing that for a couple weeks now...
Come on Jimbo, pull the trigger!
Bedard AND Roberts after Fukudome
Wouldn't the O's be interested in guys like Marshall, Gallagher and Colvin?
Don't get me wrong, I like all three of these kids but you have to give to get.
Throw in a Fontenot and/or Cedeno plus another middle/high prospect and swap a couple higher salaries (Marquis or Dempster would be one of those for the Cubs) and I think the Cubs are close.
All the writers around here are talking about Roberts being the final big acquisition after Fukudome (assuming the Cubs get hime) but are ignoring the pitching staff, in particular the ROTATION. I can't believe Lou AND Jim are OK with going into '08 with both Marquis and Dempster possibly being in the starting 5. Either one and I'm not happy.
Why would the Orioles want...
This isn't basketball; nobody has to match salaries in a trade. And unless you're talking a trash-for-trash swap, they don't do that in baseball.
"either one"
An organization building trade
Are any of Marshall, Gallagher, Colvin, Fontenot,or Cedeno future stars? I don't think so. I think Marshall could be a #2/3 starter at best, which is solid, but not what the Orioles are looking for. Fontenot and Cedeno are likely utility infielders and Colvin is far from a lock.
DmL
I'd rate Gallagher's upside
Maybin and Miller
The difference is that our prospects have spent more time in the minors and majors. That means we've seen more warts on them. Maybe Detroit is smarter to sell early but certainly the 2 guys they gave up are not even close to Willis and Cabrera in proving themselves.
Prospects
Maybin and Miller are both A- prospects according to John Sickles. Looking through some of his other reports, rarely does he rate anyone higher. Most organizations don't have anyone above a B+. Pie, for comparison, is a B+. Hill, of course, is no longer considered a prospect.
DmL
All true
The Tigers took a pair of highly rated prospects along with 4 middling guys and got 2 very young All Stars.
What I suggest is the possibility exists for trading prospects for major leaguers rather than paying a fortune through the free agent market. And this is coming from someone who places a very high value on the farm system.
Dome-ay!!!
Just imagine sitting in the RF bleachers chanting his name...
This makes my cold, snowy day in Des Moines more tolerable.
