Fantasy Smack Down League

The day of reckoning draws near, my pretties. Yahoo will allow us to start registering leagues on February 15. That's Thursday, kids. So this is your last chance to let me know if you have a preference for my league or Ethan's league.

Thanks to those who have emailed me already about this. Unfortunately, it's become a tangled web of who wants to be in what league. For example, player A wants to be in my league with player B, who insists on being in Ethan's league with player C, who doesn't want to be in the same league with player A. Sigh. I'm going to do my best to accomodate everyone, but, in the end, I might just wind up drawing names out of hats. Capice? So if you wind up in a league that was your second choice, please don't take it personally. Of course, as tomorrow is Valentine's Day, if you want to increas your chances of getting into your preferred league by sending me a little trinket or bauble, I won't hold it against you. This is Chicago, after all. Also, if you prefer to send flowers, I'm partial to french tulips. Thanks.

Now then, this thread is open for discussions regarding specific rules/requirements, scoring methods, etc. Let's hear your suggestions. Here is mine:

Each player is required to have one current and one former Cub on their team.

Others?

Not sure about the final decision
But the last-place team should have to do something silly, like take a picture wearing a bonnet and post it on BCB.

Or perhaps purchase a Marquis jersey.

I dislike that rule...
...I don't want to have to pick a Cub simply for the reason of taking a Cub.

And former Cubs are anathema.

However, if your worship persists on this, I will do my best to accomodate.

My suggestion is that we do a head-to-head league. That way it's like a weekly boxing match between one player and another, setting up epic showdowns in smack talk, rather than a marathon run with unfocused salvos fired here and there throughout the year.

And scoring I'm hoping will be the basic 5X5. Let's keep it simple.

Oh, and I'd better be in your league Julie or I'm not playing.

But that's part of the point
That's what makes it fun. Like every other decent Cub is taken and you are forced to take Marquis because he's all that's left. That's part of the fun of the whole thing.

Of course, it would be more fun if Neifi and Boom Boom were still around, because we could make fun of whomever gets stuck with them forever. But I KNOW we'll have some sucky Cubs this year who will allow us to make fun of their owners. Come on, just give it a chance!

OK, here's the deal.
I intend to take Marquis for my team.

I know no one else in my league is going to want him anyway, so I'll be able to take him with a late-round pick.

And then I'll laugh at everyone when he does well.

no way you get past the grannies...
...no way you get the bathtub they will sew onto your back off and then get out the door to even get in your car and drive over here.

That, and you don't even know where I live.

And Growlie FitzSimons will be waiting for you if by some small chance you elude the grannies, get the bathtub off, get into your car, find my address, and get over here.

Growlie has something to say to you too.

If it's Yahoo...

Team construction goes something like this:

C
1B
2B
3B

OF
OF

Util

SP
SP
RP
RP
P
P

with 5 bench spots and 2 DL spots.

You guys
help me out. I need either more people or another commish. With another commish, we can do 9 in a league. If we get a few more people, we can do 10 in a league. If we get a bunch more, we can do 3 leagues of 12.

I'm going to stop caring if people get mad at me or not. You'll end up where I put you, and none of it is personal. Everyone is just going to have to get over it. Frankly, even I'm not getting to be a league with some people I wanted to be with, because the tangled web of social relationships on this incestuous site just won't let it work out.

Maybe I need to be in the super comp.
league..

9-10 people is just wayyy too small of a sample size to be in a fant baseball league...
The teams are juiced, like Sammy's bats in the late 90's.

Poor Julie
People tell her too many teams, she tries to appease the situation.

Now, not enough teams. Good grief people, we're playing FANTASY BASEBALL, not trying to create a new civilization here.

Just let things be.

You guys
someone just tell me how many people you want in a league.

Half the league wants 12-15, half wants 10-12.

Seriously. This is making me crazy. I don't want to spend all this time setting this up and then have half the people drop out because they're pissed off about the rules.

If you don't want to speak up here, email me at:

cubbiejulie (at) jbjoing (dot) com

and tell me what you think. I can do two equal leagues. I can do a big league and a small league, I can do three small leagues, but we have got to have some kind of consensus.

I guess one on the size of the league

maybe less than 10
10-12
and 12-15

Double sigh.

This is the first time...
...I've done a fantasy baseball league so hopefully I can catch on fast.  Much harder than updating NFL games once a week, eh?

Second, although I'm on this site every day, I surely don't know everyone as well as the rest of you.  Hopefully this league will change a bit of that, thanks!!

A couple things/suggestions
1- I want to be in a league with sparkles the reigning champ, you cannot be the champ unless you beat the champ.  After being flat out embarrassed last year, I want a shot at her, yes I am picking on an 18 year old girl, shut up already :) .

2- I think that the draft should be done on a thread here at BCB?

Why ??  Because opening day is like 2 hrs away.  Each team should get 12 hrs to pick and if not then they are auto selected for.

Seeing as how we are all addicted to BCB, chances are it will be done in one night but if someone cannot make a timed draft, say Thurs at 6... at least we all will be around for some portion of the draft.

by cubsfan2883 on Feb 12, 2007 10:54 PM CST reply actions

I believe...
... in Yahoo leagues, you have the draft on their own site, and it can be timed.

If we did it here, I suspect we'd overwhelm the thread in a big hurry.

by Al Yellon on Feb 12, 2007 10:56 PM CST up reply actions

The timed drafts are poor
because no one can ever agree on a time.

We'd have to agree to keep the thread clean, and I would even volunteer to keep track of the picks.

You could do an offline draft on yahoo and input the picks there.

by cubsfan2883 on Feb 12, 2007 10:58 PM CST up reply actions

Oh my goodness
I just was thinking about what a hassle it will be to get everyone to the draft on the same day...
PTBNL!

by gravedigger on Feb 12, 2007 10:59 PM CST up reply actions

People have to show up
at the agreed upon time, or their pick will be auto-selected. That's just the way it works.
HENDRY!

by cubbiejulie on Feb 12, 2007 11:01 PM CST up reply actions

Correct.
The time will be announced in advance. You can adjust your selections before that -- after that it's auto-selected.

Blah
There is NO way that everyone will agree on a time, group dynamics suggest there IS no such time that EVERYONE will agree on.. A draft on this forum would work best but you refuse to even consider the idea?

by cubsfan2883 on Feb 12, 2007 11:07 PM CST up reply actions

No - you are right
Yahoo is best.  We can meet up but those who cannot make it can tell it what order they want, and then they will get their picks.  This will work well.  Sorry I opened this can of worms, this one shouldn't even be an issue.
PTBNL!

by gravedigger on Feb 12, 2007 11:10 PM CST up reply actions

OK, OK, slow down.
Yahoo leagues have an auto-draft format. You can either show up for the draft and do it yourself, or have it draft for you based on rankings YOU make.

A time will be set WEEKS in advance. You'll have plenty of notice when the draft is. If you can make it, great. If you can't, then set your rankings on the site. It really is that easy.

Doing it on BCB is logistically impossible.

I would prefer...
...using Yahoo! for drafting, reading threads after threads can become overwhelming, especially if we are waiting for people to select.  A Sunday night or something of the like?  And although I have not done a MLB league before, it sounds like 12-14 is ideal for a good enough team not to be too stacked.

Anyway, I'm game for whatever, this is the smack league, not the uber-competitive.

Well Hello!
<julie returns from giving herself a frontal labotomy with a ball point pen that was on her nightstand>

Gosh, it's great to see you guys! Have I told you all how much I love you all lately? Oh look, it's snowing. Don't you love snow? It's so soft and . .  white.

Anyway, Ethan and I have been talking about this, and now three people (who, incidentally, are amongst the coolest cats I know) all think 14 people in a league is too many. Heh. People. I love people. Don't you love people. I wish we could all be in the same league, don't you? We could eat crumpets and drink honeyed tea together.

Anyway, I was doing some reading, and it seems that most everyone agrees that 8-12 is the ideal size for a fantasy league. I love fantasies. They let me do things I can't do in my. . . .non-fantasy life. And I love unicorns. Don't you guys love unicorns?

Anyway, unless we get two more people, we're going to split into 3 leagues of 10, 10, and 8. I love the number 8. It reminds me of infinity. I really hope we get two more people, though, then we could do 3 leagues of 10, and there's something really. . . symmetrical about that. Don't you think?

Did I mention how much I love people? I did? Cool.
