Open Thread: Cubs vs. Padres at Mesa and Cubs vs. Rangers at Surprise, Friday 3/9, 2:05 CT

It's split-squad day, which means almost every one of the 58 players in camp (less a few pitchers who have either just thrown, or will tomorrow) ought to get some playing time today.

Here's the MLB Multimedia Guide for today. If you only have MLB Audio, you're shut out -- there is no radio coverage today. The game at Mesa, however, is on CSN Chicago and MLB.TV -- there is no coverage of the game at Surprise.

Lineup for the Mesa game, courtesy as always of Bruce Miles:

Soriano, CF
Izturis, SS
Lee, 1B
Ramirez, 3B
Jones, RF
Barrett, C
Coats, LF
Perez, 2B
Hill, P

Bruce also reports he saw Matt Murton and Ronny Cedeno board the bus to Surprise, so they'll probably be starting there, along with Neal Cotts, who will be the starting pitcher against the Rangers.

Cubs/Padres MLB.com Gameday link

Bob Feller is the second-oldest living Hall of Famer (after Phil Rizzuto, who probably shouldn't be there in the first place). He still attends Indians spring training every year, and a couple of days ago when they played the Yankees, the New York Times ran this article about Feller and his 15-year-old grandson Dan (free registration required). Fascinating reading, not only about the baseball side of it, but about Feller's service in World War II. The photo shows Dan Feller, who bears a striking resemblance to a young Bob Feller.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

It's a split-squad day.
Murton (and probably DeRosa) and others who might usually hit #2, are probably playing in the other game.

Awww man...
No Gameday Audio?! What is this, London during the blitz? Do we need to maintain radio silence to avoid snipers? What?!

Well, even a Cubs junkie like me can't justify buying MLB.TV for one lowly spring training game. If any generous, attentive soul(s) out there feels like doing play-by-play on this thread, though, I'd be much obliged.

The lineup for the Mesa game is serviceable enough. Let's hope Lou doesn't seriously consider Izzy for the two-hole during the regular season, but, considering the guy is batting .500 with a .545 OBP (according to sportsline.com), I guess he makes a serviceable number two hitter. (I know, I know...small sample.)

Maybe I should tell my boss I'm sick and go home to watch the game. No, that would be crazy. <cough, cough>

I have bitten the bullet... for one month ($19.95) of premium MLBTV. We'll see how it goes.

Of note, however: I do not have cable television, so this is my only connection to the outside media world!

re: just a few hours later...
Enjoy! If you don't have cable, then I'd say MLB.TV is probably a decent investment.

I love Gameday Audio because I can listen to the games here at work and still, like, work. If I got MLB.TV, I just know I wouldn't get a damn thing done.

Plus, my boss might not be too pleased to find me with my feet up on the desk, an Old Style in one hand and a hot dog in the other, watching a baseball game.

Re: mlbaudio being unavailable?  Anyone remember from last year?  I know I had a subscription for just the audio last year but I don't remember this situation happening that often, if at all.  I'm getting ready to subscribe before opening day and was just curious as to how frequently this occurs.

in Surprise
The Cubs likely are starting Murton (LF), Pie (CF), Pagan (RF), Kincade (3B), Cedeno (SS), DeRosa (2B), Ward (1B), Blanco (C).

DH
Just realized that they use the DH there. Ward probably DHs, with Dopirak perhaps playing 1b.

Lots of options, at least we're likely to see more than three innings out of he starters in Mesa, with half the team in Surprise.

I think...
... we're going to see the Cubs cut some dead wood one of these days. I don't think they'll get sent down, I think they'll be shipped elsewhere, clearing room on the 40-man roster. I think Cedeno and Novoa may be sent elsewhere. If the Cubs end up going with 11 pitchers, therefor the extra position player, I would not be surprised to see Mike Kincade make a push for consideration. That or someone else who can play a few infield positions who isn't currently in camp.

DmL

by dmlichte on Mar 9, 2007 11:56 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Kincade...
... hasn't played in the majors since 2003, and is 34 years old. He's this spring's Scott McClain -- I doubt he makes the team.

Novoa might very well be prime trade bait. But Cedeno is likely going to be the starting SS at Iowa. I don't think he's going anywhere.

Feller
I read that article about Feller the other day and enjoyed it. I hope I'm as mentally sharp as he is when I'm 88. What's incredible is that he pitched against Lou Gehrig. I wonder how well Gehrig hit off of him? Gehrig has been dead for almost 66 years, but Feller is still around talking about those days.

I think there still are a few players left who played in games with Babe Ruth, but I may be mistaken.

By the way
I consider Feller to be the oldest living Hall of Famer. Rizzuto has no business being there, something even my father, who grew up a rabid Yankee fan in New York in the 1950s, agrees with me on.

Sosa isn't supposed to play today.
According to local radio (I'm in Dallas) today is a scheduled day off.

Incidentally, Sosa is 7 for 15 in spring training with 2 HRs.  The Rangers brass are saying that he has rejuvenated bat speed for what it's worth.

Soriano playing a pretty poor CF today
He really should have had that ball over his head and then the single that scored kouzmanoff he half assed it in getting to it.  I think no matter what Lou wants reality to be Soriano is a poor OFer no matter how fast he is and he should be in LF.

Soriano...

It is early and he has never played it but I don't know that I want to see him learning through this whole year.

by JonH on Mar 9, 2007 2:24 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Scary
If what you're saying about his play in center is true.

My question:

Is it too early to move Soriano to 2B, bring Pie up and start him in CF, and then let DeRosa and Izturis battle it out with Theriot for SS?

I realize I may be jumping the gun a bit here, but winning teams are traditionally strong up the middle. And Murton and Jones aren't good enough in RF and LF to take any pressure off of Soriano in center.

Maybe Soriano will improve - I'm sure he will. And having a strong CF isn't always key to winning. But I worry.

Texas Update
According to game day, it's now 8-5 Texas in the top of the 5th.  Neither Ben Howard nor Cory Bailey acquited themselves well.  Oh, they pitch for the Cubs, just in case, like me, you didn't know that.  Howard gave up four runs in 1.2 IP and Bailey walked the first batter he faced (Sosa) and allowed a run to score on a wild pitch.

Course
It's nobody that matters playing in that game.  Koyie(?) Hill has three of the five Cubs RBI.  Of course, Murton had a 2 run HR, so that is something.

Ryan O'Malley is pitching now.  I think he had a 1-2-3 inning.
