Open Thread: Cubs vs. Padres at Mesa and Cubs vs. Rangers at Surprise, Friday 3/9, 2:05 CT
It's split-squad day, which means almost every one of the 58 players in camp (less a few pitchers who have either just thrown, or will tomorrow) ought to get some playing time today.
Here's the MLB Multimedia Guide for today. If you only have MLB Audio, you're shut out -- there is no radio coverage today. The game at Mesa, however, is on CSN Chicago and MLB.TV -- there is no coverage of the game at Surprise.
Lineup for the Mesa game, courtesy as always of Bruce Miles:
Soriano, CF
Izturis, SS
Lee, 1B
Ramirez, 3B
Jones, RF
Barrett, C
Coats, LF
Perez, 2B
Hill, P
Bruce also reports he saw Matt Murton and Ronny Cedeno board the bus to Surprise, so they'll probably be starting there, along with Neal Cotts, who will be the starting pitcher against the Rangers.

Bob Feller is the second-oldest living Hall of Famer (after Phil Rizzuto, who probably shouldn't be there in the first place). He still attends Indians spring training every year, and a couple of days ago when they played the Yankees, the New York Times ran this article about Feller and his 15-year-old grandson Dan (free registration required). Fascinating reading, not only about the baseball side of it, but about Feller's service in World War II. The photo shows Dan Feller, who bears a striking resemblance to a young Bob Feller.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

It's a split-squad day.
Awww man...
Well, even a Cubs junkie like me can't justify buying MLB.TV for one lowly spring training game. If any generous, attentive soul(s) out there feels like doing play-by-play on this thread, though, I'd be much obliged.
The lineup for the Mesa game is serviceable enough. Let's hope Lou doesn't seriously consider Izzy for the two-hole during the regular season, but, considering the guy is batting .500 with a .545 OBP (according to sportsline.com), I guess he makes a serviceable number two hitter. (I know, I know...small sample.)
Maybe I should tell my boss I'm sick and go home to watch the game. No, that would be crazy. <cough, cough>

just a few hours later...
Of note, however: I do not have cable television, so this is my only connection to the outside media world!

re: just a few hours later...
I love Gameday Audio because I can listen to the games here at work and still, like, work. If I got MLB.TV, I just know I wouldn't get a damn thing done.
Plus, my boss might not be too pleased to find me with my feet up on the desk, an Old Style in one hand and a hot dog in the other, watching a baseball game.

How often does this happen?
For spring training games...
Thanks Al!

Lots of options, at least we're likely to see more than three innings out of he starters in Mesa, with half the team in Surprise.

Novoa might very well be prime trade bait. But Cedeno is likely going to be the starting SS at Iowa. I don't think he's going anywhere.

I think there still are a few players left who played in games with Babe Ruth, but I may be mistaken.
By the way
the play by play today could be confusing.
Speaking of surprise
That is true.

Sosa isn't supposed to play today.
Incidentally, Sosa is 7 for 15 in spring training with 2 HRs. The Rangers brass are saying that he has rejuvenated bat speed for what it's worth.

Jones...
And Bob Brenly isn't on -- I recognize the voice of the guy subbing in for him, but for the life of me I cannot remember his name. I like having him around, though -- real insight into pitching.
Yes
Todd Walker flew out to the warning track, but Buck Coats lost the ball.
K and a 4-3 ended the inning.

You do mean the Rangers game, right?
nope
You could always...
FWIW, Tyler Colvin is playing RF in Surprise.
dont have time
but not if I add refresh and read to the begining of that. :)
Vlad just tripled.. wtf?
Soriano playing a pretty poor CF today
Soriano...
I should caveat that with
Scary
My question:
Is it too early to move Soriano to 2B, bring Pie up and start him in CF, and then let DeRosa and Izturis battle it out with Theriot for SS?
I realize I may be jumping the gun a bit here, but winning teams are traditionally strong up the middle. And Murton and Jones aren't good enough in RF and LF to take any pressure off of Soriano in center.
Maybe Soriano will improve - I'm sure he will. And having a strong CF isn't always key to winning. But I worry.

Feller ...Santo
Can anyone confirm this ?
I think I recall Feller admitting that
he did NOT vote for Santo a few years
ago.
Does anyone know of anyone else who has
admitted not voting for Ron ??
These scoreboard updates...
re: These scoreboard updates...
I guess this is one more way the MLB keeps us jonesin' for the regular season.
On the bright side, Hill seems to be doing fairly OK so far. 3 Ks, 0 walks...a few hard-hit balls but minimal damage.

Plus -- can anyone answer this: Why are most Myspace pages so unbelievably poorly laid out? Neither of those was readable.
