Open Thread: Cubs vs. Reds, Sunday 4/15, 1:20 CT

Today is a special day for baseball.

As you likely know, MLB is honoring the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's first game by having many players wear his now-retired uniform number 42. The idea was originally Ken Griffey Jr's, but as other players heard about his desire to honor Jackie by wearing this number, many others wanted to do so. As a result, dozens of players and coaches will don #42 today -- you can see a complete list here.

The Cubs will have six men wearing the number -- players Derrek Lee, Cliff Floyd, Jacque Jones and Daryle Ward, and coaches Gerald Perry and Lester Strode. It's been written elsewhere that doing this somehow "cheapens" Robinson's memory.

Quite the contrary, I think. What Robinson did was more than courageous, and I don't think that any of us, sixty years on, can truly know what he went through and what it meant to the African-Americans in this country at the time, or indeed, what it meant to our entire society. In many ways Robinson was at the forefront of the civil rights movement of the '50s and '60s. To this day, the 46,572 who paid to see Jackie play his first game at Wrigley Field on May 18, 1947 is the largest paid crowd in the history of the ballpark (note to sticklers: I am well aware that the 51,556 on June 27, 1930 is the largest total crowd in Wrigley Field history, but that included many freebies -- and there's no way the Chicago Fire Department would allow that many in the park today).

Anyway, it is my opinion that this tribute to Jackie Robinson is a fitting one. In fact, it might be even more fitting if MLB would unretire #42 and allow players to wear it in tribute to Robinson on an everyday basis, instead of just remembering him on April 15. In that way, his legacy would be noted on the field of play every day.

 Today's Starting Pitchers

 K. Lohse
Reds
1-0 W-L 0-0
2.77 ERA 4.05
14 SO 7
2 BB 1

vs. Cin -- vs. Cubs
These two pitchers have already faced the team they're pitching against today, earlier this year, but not each other. Lilly beat the Reds on April 4; Lohse got a no-decision in a Reds win on April 5.

Today ought to be the day that Alfonso Soriano gets untracked. He is 14-for-28 lifetime vs. Lohse, with two doubles, 4 HR and 10 RBI (and that includes a 1-for-5 against him last week). Expect Jeff Conine to start at 1B for the Reds today; he is .304/.346/.565 in his career vs. Lilly with 2 HR in 23 AB.

My SBNation counterpart at South Side Sox has some nice things to say about Neal Cotts, well worth reading (scroll down a bit, it's below the photo of Billy Joel. Yes, Billy Joel).

And, if you think the weather's been bad in Chicago, a massive storm targeting the eastern third of the country is likely to cause postponements today in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and possibly also Cleveland, Atlanta and Pittsburgh (and the last two cities there also had games postponed yesterday).

Finally, today's giveaway at the ballpark is a Lou Piniella bobblehead. This ought to be a popular item -- in fact, it's so popular that even before the gates open, there's already at least one on eBay.

Today's game is on WGN-TV, so it should be available to most of you who have cable or satellite; it's also at the Mediacenter and, of course, on MLB.com Gameday.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Storm
It looks like those six games have already been postponed.  That must be some storm.

Makes me glad it's nice and sunny here in Chicago.

disagree on one point . . .
"Anyway, it is my opinion that this tribute to Jackie Robinson is a fitting one. Sorry, Al, but I really disagree with you on this point.  Unretiring it would completely rob the number of its historical significance, and further encourage subsequent people coming to the game to forget this important legacy.  With each passing decade, that already seems to be happening (cultural amnesia being what it always is), but keeping that number sacred is a way to keep that legacy in circulation.

my 2 cents.

by hoosiercubbie on Apr 15, 2007 9:08 AM CDT   0 recs

I Fully Concur
Unretiring #42 would lead to the number's misuse, abuse and general cheapening.  Jackie Robinson's place is in American history, not just MLB history.  His memory deserves the same level of treatment and respect as any great American from George Washington to the present.
And so it goes.

by Luigi on Apr 15, 2007 9:38 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

That would depend...
... on who wore it. Perhaps the honor would be subject to approval by MLB. But I still think having active players wear it -- and you can see how many active players feel it's an honor to do so today -- wouldn't cheapen it at all.

JMHO.

by Al on Apr 15, 2007 9:48 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

perhaps. . . .
having a special approval process and ceremony with MLB for select players to take the number would still work and be a way to constantly re-honor Robinson.  But I'd still just like to see it left alone, except for special occasions like today.

I was thinking more of forgetful fans than players.  Perhaps, Al just has more faith in people's willingness and ability to remember history than I do.

by hoosiercubbie on Apr 15, 2007 10:10 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I see what you mean...
... yes, Robinson's memory is honored at every ballpark with a retired number. But how many of those "forgetful fans" tune that out, or don't notice it?

With a player -- a significant player, yes, perhaps one subject to approval by MLB -- wearing it, I'd think the number, and thus the memory of Robinson, would be out there on the field every single day.

Just a thought.

by Al on Apr 15, 2007 10:16 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

oh, you're absolutely right . . .
. . . "forgetful fans" are going to forget regardless.

But bringing back the number (IMHO) will just facilitate that and make it worse.

I agree "approved" usage might help, but I just think retiring the number is the best way to fully keep visibility and value to its significance.

I cannot help but think that other people wearing it permanently will somehow diminish its cultural and historical rarity and aura, regardless of intentions.

by hoosiercubbie on Apr 15, 2007 11:06 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

One Player
It might be cool if one player in all of MLB was allowed to wear it.  That would be a very special honor given to one person to honor Jackie Robinson.  When that player retires, it is given to another player to wear.

by MissouriKev on Apr 15, 2007 11:22 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think we should just leave it.
I don't think the whole approval thing would work, and then MLB would be playing favorites with players probably.  It would be pretty bad if people started fighting over Robinson's number. I don't know if that would happen, but I want to avoid it.

Also, I think if the player is great and they wear Robinson's number that might place him(JR) in a shadow. I think some players want to make the number they wear theirs, and with Jackie's number I wouldn't want them to do that. It's his number.

I don't really care about jersey numbers now, but Robinson's is obviously important.

by sparkles721 on Apr 15, 2007 11:32 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think I agree, too
What if somebody wound up with the number who didn't quite live up to the honor of wearing it? There are some who might want it for 'publicity' purposes, which would demean the whole purpose of the situation. Perhaps a yearly special day, like today -- is the best answer. #42 is worn on that day only. That would act as a constant reminder (I think only some of the MLB memorials are actually effective -- the #42 flag atop Wrigley can be easily ignored) to the public why the number is important.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Apr 15, 2007 12:09 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I Agree
A once a year event such as today is sufficient to keep the memory alive in the minds of future generations of fans.  To pass the number out to everyday players will eventually generate controversy that would likely overshadow the meaning of the number.  Could you imagine players using the wear of #42 as a contract issue?  Could you imagine the petty jealousies between and among players that would create a feeding frenzy by the ravenous media machine?  Could you imagine the shame of a highly revered player having a closeted skeleton exposed, and on and on?  The reasons not to use #42 for day-to-day wear are much more numerous and important than those in favor of it.  Al, your heart is in the right place, but it is a bad idea period.
And so it goes.

by Luigi on Apr 15, 2007 12:30 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

In reading all your comments...
... I think you are right. Mike said to me today when I mentioned this at the park, "Should some Cub be able to wear #14 in honor of Ernie Banks?"

It's not quite the same thing, but I saw his point.

As long as Jackie's legacy is remembered, and what he did not EVER forgotten, then the honor of the retired number forever is something that should indeed be kept just as it is. Today's special remembrance, we hope, will bring some more attention to what he did, and also to the declining numbers of African-Americans in the game today.

Thanks to all who posted about this. You changed my mind.

Remembering Robinson
I was fortunate enough to attend the Cubs/Mets game at Shea Stadium in 1997 when they retired #42 throughout the league.  Bud Selig, President Clinton, and Jackie Robinson's widow were there and all of them spoke.  It was a wonderful ceremony!
I have to agree with hosiercubbie and many other fans that they should not unretire #42.  I don't believe that players remembers Jackie Robinson ONLY on April 15th - I believe that many players remember what he did everytime they step on the field.  And by honoring Robinson on April 15th, it reminds young people, both in and out of baseball, what a huge step this was for African-Americans back in the late 40's.  Yes, many believe that this was the start of the civil rights movement, and to not honor Robinson every year would be a huge mistake and would be forgetting part of American history.

by augie90 on Apr 15, 2007 9:39 AM CDT   0 recs

More Robinson notes....
... each player today will wear a #42 sticker on his helmet.

And, all the players wearing #42 get two jerseys -- one to keep, the other will be auctioned off to benefit the Jackie Robinson Foundation.

Now that would be a cool souvenir to bid on, and you'd know your $ would be going to a good cause.

Finally, as part of the pre-game ceremony honoring Robinson, Derrek Lee will speak, honoring Jackie's legacy.

Unretiring Robinson's number
Would make his legacy more of a novelty than how it should truly be remembered, as a groundbreaking time in baseball and America. What would have been the point of retiring the number in the first place?

Unfortunately, MLB has overplayed this and is taking the meaning out of this by letting entire teams (besides the Dodgers, of course) wear the number.

Yesterday's Poll Question on the Broadcast
...speaking of the Sweet Lou bobblehead, yesterday's poll question on the broadcast was something along the lines of "would you rather have a manager who wears his emotions on his sleeve, or one who hides it well" or some such.  Naturally, the former was the overwhelming winner.  It was such a stacked question!  They may as well have worded it, "Everyone still hate Dusty Baker's management style?"  The result would have been the same!

For the record, I would have voted with the majority on that one, I just wanted to point out what a loaded question it was.

Jackie Robinson Steals Home
One thing that always astonished me was his ability to read the pitcher and steal home.  Has anyone been able to do that since?

by JFCubFan on Apr 15, 2007 1:09 PM CDT   0 recs

No
And probably the only person who could equal Robinson's ability to steal home before him would, ironically, be Ty Cobb.

how do you steal home?

What's the common method for stealing home?

by astroview on Apr 15, 2007 2:23 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Stealing home...
Easier done with a left-handed pitcher.  Pitchers don't tend to pay as much attention to a runner at third.  So, you get a big walking lead, and break toward home before the pitcher starts his delivery.  If the pitcher doesn't realize quick enough, you have a shot.

He made catches that anyone else would've made. They hit the ball well and hopefully that'll translate to runs in the next few innings, but at this time of year, you'd hope that these players would realize that those hits are going to be outs.

What kind of dumb comment was that?
Len:

"I didn't realize that Wrigley Field was the only ball park left in the national league that Jackie Robinson played in."

Are you kiddin' me?

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Apr 15, 2007 1:42 PM CDT   0 recs

But....but...but...
IT'S OBVIOUS, ISN'T IT?
The next oldest ballpark in the National League is Dodger Stadium, built in 1962. Wrigley is over 90 years old -- OF COURSE HE PLAYED THERE, AS DID BABE RUTH.

He can say the remark -- it's certainly correct but the way he phrased it....he sounded like a nine-year-old, not like a professional major league announcer.  ("Wow, how about that! Robinson played here!!! Gee Whiz!! was the tenor of the statement) Brenly was smart enough to stay silent and not point out the fact Kasper sounded like this was the first game he'd ever seen.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Apr 15, 2007 2:01 PM CDT   0 recs

I think
he was surprised about the fact that Wrigley is the only park left in which Robinson played and that there are no other parks still around from Robinson's time.  I'm pretty sure he realized that Robinson had played at Wrigley.

by cubsbak on Apr 15, 2007 2:04 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

If Kasper is surprised
...that Wrigley Field is the only National League ball park left that Robinson played in, I am wondering how he actually got a job as a MLB broadcaster.

He could have phrased the sentence thusly:

"Of course, Wrigley Field is the only National League ball park that JR played in which still exists."

That makes the assumption that Len knows this already and is making the statement to remind younger viewers. There's nothing wrong with that.

But it seems history starts in 1970 for Len. He must have been a perfect fit in the Marlins booth.
If he wants to sound like a 12-year-old, so be it.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Apr 15, 2007 2:16 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs
