Around SBN: Chan Sung Jung Wins Thriller Over Dustin Poirier

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Reds, Wednesday 9/19, 7:05 CT

Here's the guy who's been the real ace of the Cub pitching staff all year long. He has made thirty-one starts, and except for the June 10 game in Atlanta where he was ejected in the first inning, he's thrown six or more innings in 23 of the other 30. Impressive.

Now, the Cubs are counting on him to continue the best season of his major league career, on short rest for the first time in four years.

I think he can handle it. Just win, baby.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Ted Lilly
 T. Lilly
Cubs
vs. Tom Shearn
 T. Shearn
Reds
15-7 W-L 3-0
3.82 ERA 4.15
160 SO 12
53 BB 9
26 HR 4
vs. Cin -- vs. Cubs
Lilly has started three times against the Reds this year, with a 4.00 ERA (just above his season record) and a 1-1 record. The win was a fine 7-inning, three-hit, one-run, one-walk, nine-strikeout performance in Cincinnati in the second game of the season on April 4. Eleven days later at Wrigley Field, he threw well but lost 1-0. The Reds hit him pretty hard at Wrigley Field on August 15; he got a no-decision in a Cubs loss. He's managed to handle Brandon Phillips, a Cub nemesis (0-for-10).

Shearn's a feel-good story of sorts; he's spent eleven years in the minor leagues, playing for: GCL Astros, Auburn, Quad Cities, Kissimmee, Round Rock, New Orleans, Chattanooga, Louisville, Chattanooga (again) and Louisville (again) before getting what appeared to be a courtesy call-up this September. He's 3-0, but the 4.15 ERA includes nine walks in 26 IP and four HR allowed. The Cubs need to hit this guy early and often.

Finally, we learn today this from Len & Bob's WGN-TV blog:

One big change this year - any wild card playoff game, plus the division series, and the National League Championship Series will be airing on TBS. THERE IS NO OVER THE AIR television of these games. Unlike previous years, where WGN would air ESPN's version of some of these games, if you or someone you know cannot watch TBS, you will not be able to watch these games. This decision was made by Major League Baseball and TBS. WGN and the Cubs had nothing to do with it.
Now how freaking stupid is that?? Cable/satellite does not have 100% coverage, not yet, anyway. Why would they want to cut off people who don't have cable/satellite? They could have made money by selling the rights to these games to over-the-air stations, at least in the markets of the participating teams. So not only have they cost themselves money, they are really going to piss off a segment of the playoff teams' fans. About what I'd expect from Bud Selig's non-leadership in the broadcast arena.

As far as tonight's game is concerned, it was initially only on WCIU, which would have meant it could have only been seen within a four-block radius of my house. ESPN has picked up the game (not sure what announcing team we'll be "treated" to), so the rest of you can see it. Also check at today's Mediacenter link.

I rely on MLBTV for Cubs games, and I believe all playoff and WS games are blacked out anyway, so I don't think it'll matter to me. However, me not being selfish makes me mad that they'd do something like that.

Actually...
... I wonder if they WILL be on MLB.TV. That'd be a way for them to make extra $ from people who don't have cable/satellite.

If past precedent holds
the games will be available on mlb.tv only to people living outside of North America.

Maybe TBS would agree to allow mlb.tv coverage in North America, since it would increase their ad coverage.  But I wouldn't count on it.

I agree that this is all very stupid.

The dreaded TBS
I'm one of the subset of fans who wouldn't be able to watch the game at home, at least without shelling out for cable, which I otherwise don't need or want.

I'd love to sit and watch Cubs games with my 4-year-old; I guess I'll take him to a bar with me.

Thanks for everything, Bud.

Not trying to put
the cart before the horse I'm really glad I get TBS. But that is really stupid to have the games only available to a certain percentage of fans.

Very happy that ESPN is carrying the game tonight other wise I wouldn't be able to see it.

Announcers
Steve Phillips the ex-Mets GM will be one of the so-called analysts tonight. On ESPN the other night, he said that he was going to Chicago to do the game. He mentioned the main announcer, but I don't recall his name.

Royko
One of my two* favorite Chicago columnists.  And I will always remember 1997 as a very sad year, because we lost not only Royko, but Charles Kuralt as well.  I still have a couple book-form compilations of his columns, and if I'm traveling for work there's a good chance I'll while away the inevitable "airport time" with one or the other.  (My ancient, battered copy of "Boss", the definitive tome on Hizzoner, Da Mare, no longer leaves the house!)

It still is amazing how many local columnists try to be "like Mike", and how far short most of them fall.  It takes more than being (1) old and (2) grouchy to make it work...

A quote, from an interview with Jon Winokur, printed in The Portable Curmudgeon:

JW: Alexander Solzhenitsyn observed that America has no binding ethic.  Do you agree?

MR: The Super Bowl unites us.  It's our substitute for war.  It's our one unifying element, more so than even the World Series.

JW: I thought baseball was the national pastime.

MR: Baseball isn't violent enough, and the games are too long.

We're missin' ya, Mike!

Repeating myself
If the Cubs get into the playoffs, they will have earned it. If not, it won't be the fault of the Astros as it wasn't the fault of the billygoat or Steve Bartman.

The whining about other teams is counterproductive and fruitless. Since the team was 8 games over .500, we've been 2 games under .500 since. If we look for reasons, the record speaks for itself.

It's not to late to go to Soto.

by tharr on Sep 19, 2007 4:59 PM CDT reply actions

It won't be the fault of the Astros
but like I've said countless times today, you can't deny that it's at least a little fishy that neither of these guys started against the Cubs just 5 days ago.  Normally the commish's office makes phone calls about these kind of things, but it would be Bud Selig calling Cecil Cooper.

I won't talk about it after the game today, but with no games going on, a slow work day, and the Cubs tied for first, what else am I going to talk about?

by IllinoisCubs on Sep 19, 2007 5:15 PM CDT up reply actions

you could also mention
that the brewers are pitching a guy with a 5.5 era and a losing record (dave bush) and since the 'stros have scored 1 run in 2 games, they are due to light it up.  And i do agree it seems a little fishy that the rookies didn't pitch against the cubs 5 days ago, i'm just not ready to concede a brewer win that easily because i dislike them so much

by philadelphiacub on Sep 19, 2007 5:22 PM CDT up reply actions

not to be a pessimist
but you forgot to mention Lilly is also pitching on 3 days rest
( well 3 days and 7 hours since he started a 12PM game on Saturday) and he threw 107 pitches. I think Lilly can handle it better than Z but it I have never liked doing this unless you literally had the season on the line for one game.

Short Rest
Is one of the reasons for the Z/Lilly short rest to ensure that Marquis would not have to pitch on Saturday (which is Yom Kippur for the uninformed)?
There is no place like Nebraska - Go Huskers!

by sanantonecub on Sep 19, 2007 5:16 PM CDT reply actions

I doubt it.
Marquis has said in the past he woud pitch if needed
on Yom Kippur. The reason for the short rest was to avoid
Traschel who would have been the only available pitcher and to
set the rotation up better but like I said in the previous post
this STILL leaves Sept. 29 as a kind of Doomsday game with Harang again vs ?
I would rather have bit the bullett last night and started Traschel
It would have been tantamount to conceding THAT game (kind of like the Astros are doing these days) in order to have better shot at other games like Sept. 29.

I'm at the University of Illinois -- the game's blacked out on ESPN and we don't get WCIU's feed. ESPN's blackout would be fine if the game was on WGN or CSN/CSN+ at the same time, but it seems they make no adjustments to the blackout region for CubsNet. So as far as watching the game goes, Champaign is in the midst of a perfect storm of anti-Cubbery.

I hate ESPN. And Comcast.
So, I'm about as far from a "blackout" area that's feasibly possible (Nashville) and instead of the game, I get...wait for it...ESPN News. And of course, Comcast's customer service is zero help. Didn't know this was rocket science. Apparently, I'm  not the only one this is happening to-makes me feel (marginally) better.

well boys win tonight or say hello to 2nd place
houston got swept before they even started the series, they threw it on purpose no doubt in my mind, we have to make up for that by coming through with runners in scoring position (soto) because we dont get those opportunities often, cincy gets one every inning, and also if lee is gonna put together at bats like this we might as well just put in ward

First he said it wasn't on because the game wasn't sold out. I said it's the Cubs. They sell out every game. Then he did some checking and came back with the MLB rules.

the thing that kills me about this year,
knowing that you can always do this sort of thing, is the inability to consistently bring in a runner from third base with less than two outs. you don't even need a hit. yet, time and again the cubs can't make it happen. this failure has cost the team a handful of wins this year, and it would be 2-2 right now.

that's just the thing that bothers me most. i'm sure you all have your own, whether its z or whatever.

If the Brewers do beat the Cubs in the Central, it's because they can actually put consistant offense on the board. Lee has been a no-show the last two weeks.  Theriot's average is plummeting, they hit into too many DP's...

ESPN is pissing me off for three reasons right now
  1. They feel that every time they do a game at Wrigley, they have to mention the Bartman thing. Congrats, the Cubs failures got a very exciting twist FOUR YEARS AGO! Yaay you did a special on it...three specials I think. Made millions of Cubs fans cry. Congrats ESPN. You have a national story. There's cookies in the press room for you.
  2. I know that we spent $300M+ this year on free agent acquisitions, but not all of that has even a impact on this season. Their total salary this year is what? $100M? I know that's still a lot but I love how idiots like ESPN and anti-Cubs fans point this out, even though the $300M we spent on players, though ridiculous, is over 8 years.
and

3) It might be a Time Warner thing, but my ESPN keeps cutting out.

sigh.  just don't get it.

These guys
Just aren't patient enough!  I thought Gerald Perry was supposed to bring better OBP with him, but these guys are just as bad as the Dusty-led Cubbies.

They don't make the opposing pitcher work hard enough, always swinging at pitchers pitches, down in the zone or pulling outside pitches.

Are they trying to do too much? Maybe.

It's definitely hard to watch.

Goddamnit
I take the ups and downs of Big Z, the anemic offense at times, and the occasional screwjob from the umps as parts of the ups and downs of a pennant race.  But when we start making chickenshit errors like this, well f*ck, why don't we just shoot ourselves in the foot.

And I sure would appreciate it if the astros would score more than 2 runs in a 3 game series.

It's probably the same result whether or not it's ruled a catch.  Theriot was tagging anyway and would  have beat a throw, mostly because Dunn was on the ground.  The only thing that would have changed is DLee on first instead of Big Orange

Catch or not
The point is moot.  If he does catch it, Theriot tagged up.  If it's a trap he scores on the base hit.

Either way - Cubs lead!!

Day off at perfect time!!
If Astros lead, Cubs really in control...they can win 2 of last 3 series, lose one, with 5 more total wins 85 will get division or playoff at worst, I predict.

Of course winning all 3 series or a sweep of one of them would make it all a bit easier...we kinda know that ain't happening don't we??

Expect everyone will enjoy a day off we were fortunate to go into this on a high note...Lou's rejigging of rotation worked out more than OK.

If the Astros can keep the Brewers' offense shut down, they'll just have to use up more and more of their bullpen.  That could hurt them with no off-days left.

Heck, I'd even let Milwaukee get the W tonight if it takes them 17 innings and their entire pen to do it...because it probably turns into two losses down the road.

I would agree with you if it resembles the cubs'
extra-inning win against the Astros last year (and the Brewers are forced to bring their starter for tommorrow into the game).

Otherwise, I think it might be good for the Brewers to blow another game (and then give up a run right after they tied it) - especially with another come-from-behind cubs' win.

The Brewers don't have anymore off days the rest of the year.  The more they throw the bullpen, the better.  Even if they win, they should have won this game already against a joke pitcher.  The more the bullpen pitches the better.  It already sucks, it will suck more with no rest.

Just got back from work
Luckily I have the oppertunity on certain occasions to take breaks and view TV, got to see a good portion of the CUBS win.
First off, if anyone else watched this game on ESPN, did anyone else get the read Orel really doesn't care for the Cubs. I can't recall all of the comments, but one sticks out that both ( Brewers and Cubs) of these teams have been floundering lately that is why they are not in the Wild Card race.He mentioned the balloned payroll and the presure the Cubs have, Hey Orel-hole this team lost a ton of games last year. The Cubs record since June 1 is solid, a bad August and so far a good September.
The Dunn catch/trap not one of the knuckelheads in the booth mentioned that Theriot would of scored on a Sac Fly anyways.
My take on Howry closing, just another way Lou will take the heat, let the players play. Lou will answer the questions, not the players.

Great Win, enjoy the day off, Beat the Bucs

I didn't think many of his "anti-Cubs" comments were made out of dis-like. They just seemd like they were made from a lack of knowledge. Like not knowing about Soriano being out at times, or Lee or Ramirez, etc... He was acting in a Joe Morgan bitter way.

I think we have learned this past week
that 'big wins' and 'big losses' don't seem to mean much the next day. What does work in the Cubs favor is that the 'Crew might be very tired going into tomorrow's opener with the Braves. With those 2 extra games, an opening "L" for the BC would be very nice.....

But since the Braves are essentially -- done -- who knows how they are going to come to play.

Rest assured, the Bucs will give the Cubs all they can handle.

We don't have a magic number because we have the same number of losses as the Brewers.  And anyway, we don't even have 10 games left.  So yeah, thats silly.

by RightFieldSucks on Sep 19, 2007 10:37 PM CDT reply actions

We DO have a magic number...
the magic number is just the combined Cubs wins and Brewers losses necessary to get us into the playoffs.  Right now, the number just happens to be higher than the number of remaining Cubs games, which means we need the Brewers to lose a game (or beat them in a 1-game playoff).

That doesn't mean we don't have a magic number, it just means we can't reach the magic number (in the regular season at least) entirely on our own.

a tough loss for the brewers. Storm back to tie it, but then to lose in extras.

Hopefully takes the wind out of their sales.

Go Braves!

Thanks to the Astros PBP
team for forgetting the importance of that game as they go to commercial -- the idiots have to wrap up  with -- "....Astros play spoilers and keep the Brewers out of a first-place tie with Chicago."

They will probably address this in their final wrap, but you just HAVE to say that initially -- makes the Astros look much better, rather then their:

"...nice win for the Astros."

Uh ohhhh, Brewers lost
I checked brewcrewball to see how they're doing, and it's amazing how much of their discussions revolve around BCB. Even a guy dedicated his own sig quote to this site.

Reminds me of a quote from the great Jack Nicholson in The Departed that seems to apply quite nicely:

That Irish pissant... he's so hot for me, we give him a whiff of my ass he'll crawl right in it. Lets give him a whiff.

Oh, Brewer fans.

euphoria aside this is what was expected
Cubs took the series, now are 7-8 against the Reds and must at least tie the series 9-9 for them to take the division and also take the Pirates series, meaning the Cubs finish with Pittsburgh 7-8 and the Cubs even the season with Marlins 3-3.

Predictions:
I think the Brewers will split 2-2 with the braves, win 2 of 3 against the redbirds, and drop 3 of 4 against the padres.  That being the case, the Cubs will need to win at least 4 of their next 9.  I think everyone's nervous about the Crew now, but a big part of the reason theyve been charging is that their last 6 series were Astros, Reds, Pirates, Reds, Astros, Pirates; all in all 18 games in a row (half at home) against the losers of the NL central.  I think they'll fade heavily against the Braves, especially with a tired bullpen, an injured ace, no days off, and coming off a deflating extra innings loss.  I think we'll have a legit magic number in 4 days.

What was best high light tonight?
  1. Alfonso blasting a moonshot HR on the first pitch to him and then gunning down the runner at home?
  2. Steve Phillips having to give the ESPN talking head game summary after taking the position in the past that the Cubs were "dead"?

And, that's why I'm so surprised to read the Friday, 8-17 game post which describes the Reds as a team, that essentially -- isn't very good. Taking a quick look at their current record -- yeah, you could make that assumption.

[snipped]

Does that sound BAD to you? You'd be very happy if the Brewers were playing that type of ball right now, I'd wager. But, since the Reds buried themselves early , the 5 game gain isn't really noticeable, if you are not paying attention.

Looking forward...
Not to Jinx anything. but....

Who do you guys think the best matchup would be for a divisional series?  Since we'd have the worst record of a divisional champ (making us the 3-seed), we'd play the 2-seed, unless the 1 seed and wildcard are from the same division, in which case we'd play the 1-seed.

If everything continues as now, meaning padres win wild card, we'd play the dbacks.  but if philly takes the wild card, we'd play the mets.  Personally, I'd rather play the mets, especially with them slumping big-time lately.  The Dbacks have had our number all year.  So lets go Phillies!

The pitcher the Brewers face tomorrow
Has not pitched an inning of major league baseball this year... if you go to most sports sites with Team Rosters on them, you won't even find this Jeff Bennett.

The only MLB innings he picked up were with the Brewers in 2005 as a reliver.  He's never started a MLB game.  The Brewers will face three guys, three days in a row that have a combined ONE, UNO, 1 MAJOR LEAGUE start under their belts.

I'm all for complaining because it certainly worked today!

Did I mention that Yost worked for Cox for years and Cox thinks that Yost is manager of the year?

No worries though, Cox is in his own playoff hunt, the Brewers have Suppan going against one of the best offenses in the game and Smoltz, Hudson and Reyes will pick up the weekend games.  Let's go Braves!

For those of you blacked out.
If you live in what MLB consider Cubs territory (Illinois, Iowa, for example) or Reds territory (Cincinnatti, Memphis, for example), you didn't watch the ESPN broadcast. You only saw the game if you have WCIU in your cable/satellite or over the air lineup (Cubs), or FSN (Reds).

It was an interesting broadcast. Dan Shulman did an excellent play by play and Orel Hershiser had some good comments. The best was his criticism of Houston for benching their starters for the Brewers series. Hershiser said that the Dodgers usually played in those kind of games at the end of their seasons when he played in L.A., and that they played the rookies against non-contenders and the regulars against contenders.

They tried to make a story about the 30 years old rookie pitcher for the Reds but Lilly stole the limelight. They were praising Lilly and forgot about the Reds pitcher after the seventh inning. BTW, they said that the Reds pitcher moved to live as roommate of the AAA teams'groundskeeper at a trailer near the ballpark, to save some money. His prior roommates had all been promoted to the majors and therefore, he couldn't pay his apartment lease anymore.

The cameras kept showing Jim Hendry during the game. This time he was not drinking but was clearly anxious. Who wouldn't?

Mike and Mike were at one of the rooftops. We'll hear more about that tomorrow morning, for sure.

Steve Phillips: not good. He said the Reds had to send the runner that Soriano threw out at the plate because the team wasn't hitting. It looked like suicide to me.

Dunn's catch. Looked like he caught it, according to the replay. I'm not sure that it bounced out when the glove hit the ground as some posted before. It appears that it did not. Regardless, they made the out on 2nd. Bottom line is that even if the ball was caught, the situation would have been the same because there is no way that the LF would have thrown Theriot out at the plate. The LF was sliding down and was in no position to throw home. In that situation he would have made the forced out at 2nd and the run would have scored anyway. The only difference would have been that Murton gets his game winning RBI on a sacrifice fly instead than on a base hit.

The Brewers defeat means that the Cubs will stay on sole possession of first place at least until Friday. If the Brewers lose tomorrow we break the tie in the very important loss column. That's when we'll really have an advantage in the standings.

Finally, after tonight's Astros-Brewers game, I bet Al likes Hunter Pence even more. Also, "El Caballo" came true for the Cubs tonight.

by Fraggin Judge on Sep 19, 2007 11:59 PM CDT reply actions

I almost forgot.
In the ninth inning, ESPN kept cutting to shots of Ryan Dempster in the bullpen. The announcers wondered aloud why he wasn't pitching that inning despite Piniella's assurance that Dempster would close no matter the situation. Apparently, the announcers had not heard the story I read here about Dempster having a cold. I don't know if the story is true or not, but I assume that if they had heard about it, the announcers would have mentioned it.

Keggers' bullpen
As IllinoisCubs pointed out the Brewers have used 10 relief pitchers past two games. Vargas is probably going to start for Sheets for at least one game.  Milwuakee has no days left. Now they're next two pitchers  (Villanueva and Suppan) have managed to go seven or more innings two combined times in the last 20 combined appearances. This is going to be very interesting

Dunn's Comments....
Dunn said the outfield at Wrigley Field is dangerous.

''I'm surprised more people don't get injured out there. It's as bad as there is,'' he said. ''It's worse than playing in a parking lot. It looks like they had a monster truck rally. It's terrible. There's potholes. It's bad. It's unsafe.''

A parking lot? Really?

Suspicious??
Duke will be making his first start since June 28, when he went down with elbow tendinitis. He threw three innings of relief Saturday against the Astros in Houston, allowing one run on three hits. John Van Benschoten was scheduled to make this start, but the Pirates wanted to see what Duke could do before the end of the season. Duke is 3-1 with a 1.42 ERA against the Cubs in Chicago, including his first career complete game in 2005.
