Double Plays? Doubles! Toil? No Trouble!, and Open Thread: Cubs vs. Dodgers, Thursday 9/6, 1:20 CT

Mark DeRosa bounced into a double play in the first inning -- the team's ninth DP of the series -- and I said to our little band in the LF corner, "Didn't we see this game last night?"

Turned out we hadn't, as the Cubs smacked out five doubles, drew six walks, had a HR from Aramis Ramirez (his 20th -- incidentally, the last time the Cubs were led in HR by someone who hit fewer than 30, in a non-strike season, was in 1992, when Ryne Sandberg led the club with 26), a solid pitching performance by Ted Lilly, and beat the Dodgers 8-2, holding on to their tenuous half-game lead in the NL Central over the Brewers, and extending their lead over the third-place Cardinals to two games after St. Louis lost to Pittsburgh, also 8-2. (Thanks, Pirates, for winning two of the first three. Go get 'em today, and then please leave your winning shoes in St. Louis.)

All of this was after a nasty little rainstorm hit the area around Wrigley Field, including drenching rain with thunder and lightning, just as the ballpark gates were opening at 5:05. It blew through in about thirty minutes and had the ground crew scrambling to put the tarp on; the Cubs were already in the middle of batting practice. (Bad news: there's a 70% chance of rain this afternoon.)

Ted Lilly didn't have his best stuff, and the Dodgers kept pecking away, getting one hit in each of the first four innings. Each time the Cubs got out of it, in the third with a wacky play when a ball bounced off Aramis Ramirez, right into the glove of Ronny Cedeno at shortstop. In the second inning Shea Hillenbrand, who has about as much business trying to steal second base as I do, was caught stealing, and in the third, he was called out on strikes. (Thanks, Grady, for sitting Andy LaRoche last night!)

The Cubs nursed their lead into the seventh, when pinch-hitter Olmedo "No-Parking" Saenz doubled in Mike Lieberthal, who had drawn a two-out walk (don't you hate those?) off Lilly. Carlos Marmol didn't seem to have his best stuff either last night, but recovered to get Rafael Furcal to pop up to end that inning. Saenz' double went over the head of Felix Pie, who slipped and fell on the wet grass in center field.

On it went into the 8th, the Cubs hanging on to that 4-2 lead, with Ryan Dempster warming up for a save opportunity.

And then the Cubs exploded and made a no-brainer out of it, a no-brainer I presume they all badly wanted and needed. The bottom of the 8th must have gone on for about 30 minutes -- I didn't time it, but it felt even longer -- and included two walks, two doubles, three singles, a hit batter, a ball thrown by Jeff Kent into about the third row behind the first base dugout, and two mid-inning pitching changes.

This gave some of the fans sitting a little closer to Dodgers LF Andre Ethier time to harass him further. Either they misread the name on his shirt or were trying to give him digs deliberately, because they were calling him "ETHER" and chanting his name in the sarcastic sing-songy way that you've probably heard many times ("EEEE-ther! "EEEE-ther!") To his credit, Ethier was a good sport about it -- maybe a bit more, as at one point I spotted him covering his face with his glove so that no one would see him laughing.

Cub fans are laughing this morning. Nice win. Keep up the good work today. The only NL games today are Cubs/Dodgers and Pirates/Cardinals, both afternoon games, so the Cubs have a chance to pick up a game on St. Louis again.

Sat with the San Diego Smooth Jazz Man again, and also brfry81, someone who says he reads BCB every day but doesn't post much, and his brother. Nice to meet you guys, and also had a brief conversation with BCB reader NO100, who stopped by in the later innings to say hi.

Onward. Hold the rain off till about 4:00, please.

vs. LA -- vs. Cubs
Jason Marquis stepped up and threw a fine game in his last start, last Saturday. Even last year, when he was probably the worst regular starter in the NL, he threw well against the Dodgers (1-0, 1.13 in two starts in 2006, and 2-1, 2.20 lifetime in 7 games, six starts). He hasn't faced them since then. Rafael Furcal has hit him well (7-for-13, 1 HR); so has Jeff Kent (8-for-19, three doubles).

Derek Lowe is 1-1, 3.58 vs. the Cubs in his career. The one win was this one-hit shutout on August 31, 2005. Fortunately, of the Cubs position players who played that day, only Derrek Lee, Matt Murton and Ronny Cedeno are still on the team, and Lee is 9-for-20 with a double and a HR lifetime off Lowe.

Today's game is cable-only in LA and Chicago, and also at today's Mediacenter link.

My 3 wishes for today
  1. This game gets played.
  2. Lou FINALLY drops Soriano to 3rd or 5th
  3. W baby W!!!

Revamp the batting order!!
Lee needs to drop to 5th or 6th.  Fonzie hitting 3rd makes sense, with Theriot taking over the leadoff spot.  I'd go as follows:

Theriot
DeRosa
Soriano
Aramas
Lee
Ward
Kendall/Soto
Monroe (cf)
Pitcher

Cubs Win!! Cubs Win!

Nuts!
Maybe in some fantasy league or computer game but Lee still leads the Cubs in runs created.

Actually moving DeRosa to the two hole was a good option yesterday and resting Theriot was good. I don't see Piniella changing the lineup this time of year significantly except with Theriot or the platoon system in the OF.

More importantly was the hitting and catching of Soto.

All I can say is
Thank God you're not managing.

Anyone that still wants Monroe in center after last night must have been watching Lifetime instead of the game. An outfield of Soriano-Monroe-Ward will give up a run a game, at least.

by lancaster99 on Sep 6, 2007 9:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes his defensive play was scary
But it was his first game in center @ Wrigley, and although he did allow runners on base he didn't give up a run.  So that was a relief.  But that first play he allowed when he was backed up against the ivy was pathetic.

And to compare Monroe is just laughable.

But PLEASE!!!! NO MORE WARD IN RF. PLEASE. For the love of god. PLEASE. That fata55 can't get to anything out there.

For someone that hates the cards
You're trying to help them win the division.

Here is the order of preferred Center Fielders:

  1. Jones - a revelation defensively, and righting his ship offensively.
  2. Pie - simply a joy to watch play the field
  3. Murton - Can't be worse than Monroe
  4. Soriano - Can't be worse than Murton
  5. Steve Bartman - We know he can knock balls back into the field of play.
  6. Ron Santo.
  7. Len Kasper
  8. Craig Monroe

by lancaster99 on Sep 6, 2007 11:07 AM CDT up reply actions

WHAT??
JJ was comparable to Pie out there.  He was far greater in CF than I ever expected and held his own.  Monroe (limited time or not) is in no way, better than JJ in CF.

Are you joking?
Have you watched JJ out there? I realize that it was Monroe's first time in center, but he just did not seem to get good reads on anything out there last night. JJ has done a very good job in center and has made some spectacular plays. He goes all out after everything.

Soto
was good at the plate. I would llike to see him get some more chances before the season is over. I know that's tough with the veteran Kendall and Blanco. Two hits and a walk is a good start.

Actually I think Soto might get the starts
against LH starters at least once a week. If Blanco is not really well I could see the Cubs bringing Soto on the playoff roster as well.

Regardless potentially we are seeing the next long term starter behind the plate.

Did Monroe look as uncomfortable in center field as he did on TV? I know he was playing too deep ( The Brant Brown center field as I like to call it) but he didn't seem to pick up the ball very well at all I thought.

Monroe, so far, is a dissappointment
I know we were all hoping he'd turn things around but he's contributed next to nothing so far.

by Mapmaker on Sep 6, 2007 9:19 AM CDT up reply actions

You are expecting too much
Monroe showed he has real pop in his bat as he has hit a number of hard liners (kind of like Rondell White or GlenEllyn Hill) and his play in RF has been stronger than the other RH option.

In an emergency I can see Monroe in CF but it appears he is a corner OF'er. He is adjusting and trying to contribute outside his comfort level.

re: You are expecting too much
I agree. And I'm gonna stick up for Monroe, too. He went 1 for 4 last night with a double, a walk and a run scored. How is that "contributing next to nothing"?

I've seen him hit a lot of balls hard and draw a few walks. His defense is nothing to write home about -- and I'd defintely prefer not to see him play centerfield. But I don't have a problem with him playing right (he certainly can't do worse there than Floyd, Ward or Murton), and I'm still optimistic about Monroe being a strong bat down the stretch against left-handed pitching.

Carlos Marmol, you complete me.

Some people in the other game thread were wanting you to scan your score card (sorry I forget what they are called).  Also, what happened with Lou last night and the confusion on the field?  I was at the bar and was a bit confused because I couldn't listen to what was happening and looked away for a minute as the game was pretty much set at the time (Although the Braves did come back to score 7 on the Phillies yesterday in the 9th)

Two points
Dodger starter Eric Stults went to my wife's alma mater, a small school near South Bend, IN.  It was the first time I've ever watched a game with someone I "know" in it.  I still rooted for the Cubs, but it was hard to wish any ill will on someone I had contact with who is busting his butt trying to make the big leagues.  A new experience for me, that's all.

Second, it was my first time watching Soto catch.  He seemed to do a very poor job of framing close pitches.  Not only did he fail to frame them in the strike zone, on more than one occasion he caught some close pitches with his glove moving away from the strike zone.  Does anyone know if this has been a problem with him, or was last night more a result of catching someone who he is unfamiliar with and who may not have had his best control?

Not so difficult, really.  Wish for him to tear up the entire league for his entire career and lose to the Cubs every time he faces them.  He still gets a nice overall record and we still do well.

sure,
but this was his biggest stage, by far.  Im happy with the outcome, he pitched adequately enough to get another start.  He is 27 years old, not a phenom, so every big league start is important.

Soto's Framing, Catching
I've watched Soto for three years in Des Moines.  He has a fielding percentage lifetime over .990 over 600+ minor league games.  In the games I watched, he consistently threw people out.

As the PCL player of the year this year, Soto put up some amazing numbers.  If he comes close to the year he had this year in AAA ever again in the majors, he'll please Cubs fans for years to come.  26 HR, 106rbi, 31doubles, .353ba, .424obp !

What a gem we have as a prospect, Cubs Fans!!

Of all of our position players in the org., catcher is the worst.

IF Soto can keep his head above water for the rest of 2007, he'll get a giant head start on a full-time MLB gig next year.

I mean LOOK who we have NOW. A neck-injured Hank White, and Jason K, who is at the end of his career (let's be honest). It would be so cool if Kendall, when he retired, would work with our catchers in a coaching capacity.

So until this season, Soto has not lived up to expectations. But maybe he has figured some things out. We sure could use him.

Soto Can't Hit?
I've observed a lot of talent at Iowa over the years... many prospects here.  Looking at the crop that we have in Chicago now that played at Iowa, it's so cool to have seen someone like Soto in action here.  He's a special kind of catcher that isn't afraid to work the count and take a walk, or to hit to all fields.

Hitting catchers as thin as they are in the major leagues, we should be jumping for joy at the value of Geo.  We have an excellent hitting catcher for years to come.

I think it comes down to everyday playing time, and with that real talent shines.  Watch next year, when he gets the starting job, he'll be the everyday #6 and eventually #5 in the lineup.

Stults Big Bat
From what I saw on the TV, he is a heck of a hitter at the major league level.  He had a good smooth swing with power, but he wasn't trying to put it out of the stadium like another mad-bull pitcher we know.  Stults would do well to stay in the NL, where he might find some managers using him as a pinch-hitter.  With the expanded roster it would not be this month, but it could be next year.

Sticking to their pattern...
Back in July Cubs lost bad to to StL (11-1) and then lost the next game to Cincinnati (5-4) before winning the next two on the road in Ohio.
In August Cubs lost bad to Philadelphia, (10-6) and then lost to the Mets before winning the next game. Unfortuntately later in August they lost big again to CO and continued into a losing 3 more games. In the first half the Cubs lost alot but not really bad except to Florida late in May (9-0) where they lost two more before turning the season around.

Independent to that I noticed that overall the Cubs focused as a team last night. Lilly focused on each pitch as a veteran is expected. Cedeno, how he hits AAA pitchers so well played very well at SS and Monroe should have made two catches but in reality didn't hurt the game, and did better at the plate. Soto hit the ball with real authority and threw out an errand delayed steal, made a good catch on a tough pop up, he has a future with this organization.

Today Cubs put forward Marquis, probably the best signing as far as value by any of the FA signings last year. Cubs will need to bring the same effort today and beat Lowe & the Dodgers and even the series, and finish the homestand 6-4. Cubs only have 7 more home games left out 23.

They even out the games played with Milwaukee today and can put a full game between them and the Brewers who travel poorly on the road, thankfully facing Arroyo and Harang who match with Bush & Suppan the first two games and then Sheets goes against Belisle who is 7-8. In Pittsburgh Milwaukee also faces Gorzelany.

So this is the rubber game
of the Dodgers-Cubs all-time series (tied at 1,007 wins each, according to Al's scorecard from yesterday).

Another fascinating tidbit: the bottom of the 8th inning yesterday was only 28 minutes (and change) long.

Could you please use your influence with the Cubs and get them to stop playing "Jump" at the start of the game and "YMCA" when the team rallies in the middle innings?? Both are so old, tired and lame that they need revamping. Thank-You.

I don't mind "Jump" so much -- and the "1984" reference is somewhat clever. But I can certainly do without "Y.M.C.A." What the hell does that have to do with a rally anyway?

The "YMCA" isn't for rallies...
... specifically, it's done when the other team makes a mid-inning pitching change. Yes, that usually means the Cubs are rallying.

Yeah, "Rubberband Man" is pretty clever and at least somewhat original. I'd like them to play something more aggressive, though.

Maybe "Lights Out" by 70s-80s hard rockers UFO or, to do a little twist on Trevor Hoffman's "Hell's Bells," they could play "For Whom the Bell Tolls" by Metallica, which starts out the same way (with a tolling bell) but is way heavier.

And, yes, I do have too much time on my hands...

Geovany Soto - freed
so nice to see...

Kendall's been good with the Cubs offensively, but he's been a mess behind the plate (Barret-esque).

It was nice to see Geovany behind the plate and to see some power potential out of the C position as well. I'm not sure Geovany will ever be a star, but I do think he's a better option at C than Jason Kendall right now and I hope he gets more opportunities down the stretch to prove it

It's also been nice to see Murton a bit lately. He didn't have great "results" last night in particular but the AB's were VERY good, working counts and building the pitch count on the opposing pitcher. You'd think the .900+ OPS in the 2nd half would get him some more respect from Lou, but it just hasn't happened yet. Hopefully we'll see more of him in the 2nd half... i think its become quite clear he's the better option in RF as opposed to Cliff Floyd

Fact suck...
This year Floyd has an OBP of .360.

Since 7/1/07 he has an OBP of .350.

I am baffled at how that can be considered an "automatic out."  I am further baffled how a .360 OBP is at all similar to Pie's .271 OBP.

Keep making things up.

by big_lowitzki on Sep 6, 2007 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions

OBP is a great stat...
...for a leadoff hitter. When you're hitting 5th you're not looking to get on base for the 6,7,8 hitter. You're looking to drive the ball in the gaps and get RBI's:

244 AB
5 HR
39 RBI
9 2B
.385 SLG

I don't know how anyone can defend Floyd, that is pathetic for a 5 hitter.

If you had read my post

He's
also got a grand total of 17 RBI's.  His numbers with RISP are: .180/.268/.260.  But hey, with nobody on base he seems to drive the ball.  Too bad he can't run better he'd be a pretty good leadoff man.  Unfortunately, hitting 5th means coming up with men on base.  In those situations he's been downright awful.

by Kinky Reggae on Sep 6, 2007 12:19 PM CDT up reply actions

What?
So numbers don't matter when a player doesn't play everyday?  Interesting...

Once again - I am not saying that Floyd is a good hitter, or even that he should be playing.  I don't think that.

I am simply saying that he very far from being an automatic out.  And he is NOWHERE close to the "automatic out" that Felix Pie is.

by big_lowitzki on Sep 6, 2007 12:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Keep in mind
I am responding to you preaching numbers and how wonderful Floyd's numbers are.

If he were a regular player and kept this pace up then there would be no arguing that he is a decent offensive player.  Like DLee mainatining his BA despite a power shortage this season.  He plays almost all games and still hits above 300.  Floyd plays MUCH less and has seemingly okay numbers but what are those numbers worth.

He steps to the plate, and there is a good chance that nothing comes from it.  Period.

MMMMM...Mannys corned beef and a latke

by Kinky Reggae on Sep 6, 2007 12:37 PM CDT up reply actions

No
I am responding to you preaching numbers and how wonderful Floyd's numbers are.

Now you really are making things up.  I never once said Floyd's numbers were "wonderful,"  and never even implied anything close to that.  I simply refuted your assertion that he is "almost" an "automatic out."    If Floyd  is "almost" an "automatic out," then what are Theriot and Soriano?

He steps to the plate, and there is a good change that nothings comes from it.  Period.

But that simply is not true.  And the numbers support it.  He has a better OBP than most people on the team, meaning that he makes less outs, per at-bat, than most people on the team.  Which means that there is a better chance that something "good" comes out of his at-bat than most of the people on the team.

But once again - I never even said Floyd was a decent offensive hitter.  I simply said he was nowhere close to an "automatic out."  And nowhere close to the "automatic out" that Felix Pie is.

by big_lowitzki on Sep 6, 2007 12:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Less outs per AB
with less appearences.  How in the world does his play time NOT have anything to do with his numbers being deceptive (IMO)?

Less out per AB for a man who plays 150 games a year means something.  For a man who plays 81 games a season, the numbers are less telling.  You do understand what I am saying right?

He is hotting close to the average as DeRosa, is he as quality a player as him?  NO WAY.  The numebrs mean a lot more if someone plays every day.

As for your statements, sorry if I read into it, more than there really was.  I still think that he is almost a sure out, and if no out, his hits seem to be generally worthless.

As for my opinions being more important that your numbers, well I feel that in this case, my opinions reflect the truth more accurately than the numbers.

MMMMM...Mannys corned beef and a latke

by Kinky Reggae on Sep 6, 2007 1:11 PM CDT up reply actions

This reasoning is upside down
Floyd was and remains a platoon player. His HR number is the only disappointment, he has a good OBP and BA. His defense has not cost the Cubs much nor has the pressure been on the RF position much this year. You could make the case that PH'g Floyd is not a good PH 3-16 or so...(.187) as a starter his BA is .295 not .287.

Ironically the chances are more in LF where Soriano has 13 assists.

You may not like Floyd, you may not like the platoon system, you may not like anything regarding RF but it is not an automatic out...

Oh okay..
keep making things up.  Thats a good one.

The guy hasn't seen regular plate appearences for a long time and you keep plugging his freakin numbers!

His numbers don't mean shit if he plays evry 4th or 5th game if you ask me.  The guy rolls over on balls, strikes out swinging and looking, and has not had a meaningful hit in almost a month.

His defense is suspect (to say the least!) and yet you continue to promote his play time.  Gimme a break.  You know what you can do with your "fact suck"?

If you think he deserves to play judging by his offense as a #5 hitter, you must be watching a different game.

MMMMM...Mannys corned beef and a latke

by Kinky Reggae on Sep 6, 2007 12:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Its pretty simple...
You said Floyd was close to an "automatic out."

Yet his OBP (i.e. the percentage of times he DOESN'T make outs) is .360, which is quite good.

Don't get me wrong - I think that Murton is a MUCH better option right now.  And I don't think that Floyd has been much of a hitter this year.  But he is simply not an automatic out.

by big_lowitzki on Sep 6, 2007 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions

And you pointed out
that I said "almost" and automatic out.  Sometimes the guyhits, and due to his rare AB's (as of late) that OPS is goingto remain close to the same, even with his outs.

Dude the guy has nothing left offensively, it is painfully obvious.  The facts, in this case, IMO, don't mean a thing.  The guy is one of the most inconsistent and unproductive hitters on the club.

he saved a run on that play, but obviously you didnt see that.  if he just pulls up on the ball, theres a good chance they send the runner home, and then a good chance hed score.  by charging the ball hard, the runner had to hold up to make sure he wasnt going to catch the ball and get doubled off, by then blocking the ball, he saved a run.

that must have been too obvious though for you to see that through your unwarranted murton hatred.

The guy goes 0-3, doesn't move any runners over or make any kind of "productive" out.  Instead, he grounds out weakly on the first pitch in his first AB, flies out weakly to right in his second AB, and strikes out weakly on a checked swing with runners on first and second in his third AB.  Now you're bragging about his VERY good at bats because he fouled off a bunch of pitches in his second and third AB's, the last of which was against a reliever.  Absurd.

Rather than a love fest for us, it seems more like Muton crossed you somehow and you are on a never ending bashfest.  the kid has shown some power (VERY valuable I might add afew games back with the GW) and has hit pretty consistently during his AB's.  One 0-3 night and you are back to saying he needs to be cut or sent down, or whatever?

GET OVER IT MAN!  Lou will use who is productive as he sees it.  If Murton plays, he thinks he deserves it, and he is the manager.

Hey
he's the one who started bragging about 3 bad AB's.  I was simply pointing out that they were bad.

by cubsbak on Sep 6, 2007 12:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Wait...
First, does an out equate with a bad at-bat?

Second, you were the one whining a few weeks ago about how Murton doesn't work counts.  I proved you wrong, and you didn't like that.  But now he clearly worked the count last night, and you attack him for not getting hits.

Why don't you attack others when they have 0 for 3 games?

by big_lowitzki on Sep 6, 2007 12:52 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not attacking anyone
I'm simply disputing the notion that Murton's 3 AB's last night were VERY good.

by cubsbak on Sep 6, 2007 1:00 PM CDT up reply actions

BTW
I don't remember getting into any kind of argument about whether Murton works counts.  In fact, that's one of the few things I give him credit for.  I think you're mixing me up with someone else.

by cubsbak on Sep 6, 2007 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Ah yes...
You are right... it was another Murton hater.

Sorry - you all sound the same.

You Murton lovers all blend together for me too.

by cubsbak on Sep 6, 2007 1:21 PM CDT up reply actions

bragging?
"It's also been nice to see Murton a bit lately. He didn't have great "results" last night in particular but the AB's were VERY good, working counts and building the pitch count on the opposing pitcher. You'd think the .900+ OPS in the 2nd half would get him some more respect from Lou, but it just hasn't happened yet. Hopefully we'll see more of him in the 2nd half... i think its become quite clear he's the better option in RF as opposed to Cliff Floyd"

feel free to read more carefully. I said the ABs were very good last night even though the results were not great. I said its been nice to see him play lately since he's clearly proven he's the better RF option than Cliff Floyd

it wasn't bragging about 3 AB's, it was a statement about how its nice to see the manager finally starting to figure out who the better player is

of course i can understand being so defensive after being proven so utterly wrong

by DartmouthCubsFan on Sep 6, 2007 12:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Wrong?
I've been proven wrong on a great many things, but Matt Murton isn't one of them.  You said his AB's were VERY good.  THAT is wrong.

by cubsbak on Sep 6, 2007 1:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Murton vs. Floyd
for quite a while you've suggested that Floyd is clearly the better option over Matt Murton and that Floyd should be the one playing over Murton

no matter what data we (others like myself) used to show you that Murton was a legitimate upgrade over Floyd you harped on Murton's 2007 stats saying that he clearly didnt deserve playing time over Floyd

by DartmouthCubsFan on Sep 6, 2007 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions

He doesn't
They're both bad, but I'd still go with Floyd over Murton against right handers mainly because Murton can't hit with runners on base.  I'd go with Monroe against lefties and hope to catch lightening in a bottle.

Look, I'm not gonna get into this with you.  You're obviously trying to pick a fight for some reason.  We clearly have differing opinions on this and we've been over it.  In your mind you've proven something.  Fine.  I could care less.  I think you understand very little about the game of baseball.

The only reason I responded to your post was to point out the absolute ridiculousness of saying that Murton had 3 VERY good AB's last night.  That's just wrong.

I love the Cajun Connection and DFA Ward...
In the lineup, but how about some Pie in CF.  I already know that Jones is going to bounce out to 2b at least 3 times against Lowe.  Pie might actually be able to bunt his way on or somethin'.

by Jerry Mumphrey on Sep 6, 2007 12:15 PM CDT reply actions

Glad...
... glad you aren't the manager.

Jock actually has decent numbers against Lowe (8 for 27, 1 HR).

And Pie, with his wonderful line of .215/.271/.337, is probably the worst hitter on the Cubs right now.

by HIGGY on Sep 6, 2007 12:25 PM CDT up reply actions

DFA Ward...
Ward's numbers, since the all star break: .368/.442/.684 OPS: 1.126.

While it is in limited at-bats (38), those are excellent numbers.  And his overall season numbers aren't much worse:

.344/.441/.527 OPS: .968

That would lead the team if he had enough at-bats to qualify.

But sure - lets DFA the guy.  The Cubs don't need any offensive help or anything.

Ward is bad in the outfield but has been a savior off the bench and one of our best bats when he is in there.  Here to hoping Marquis pitches ground balls and we dont have to worry about his D.

I don't hate him...
but I am frustrated at his total lack of plate discipline most of the time. Of course the 21 times that he's swung as hard as he can and hit the ball out of the ballpark are nice, but I sure do see alot of AB when those monster swings at balls bouncing in the dirt don't pay off. I guess I don't like the fact that he seems to only be up there to try and hit the HR regardless of the situation/count/score.

by CubsBall2202 on Sep 6, 2007 3:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Dempster has a stinker...
I eyeball counted 8 one run saves for Dempster from the ESPN site.  He's had one very bad outting every month (except July), which is why his ERA is on the high side, and in most of his saves he has not given up any runs.  Well, I shouldn't say that because I don't think the stats include inherited runners charged to someone else?

What is noticeable about Dempster and should be a real cause for alarm is that since the All-Star break he is walking way too many hitters and his Ks are down per inning as well.  He's getting very close to a walk an inning and that sucks for a relief pitcher if you want to use him in leveraged spots.

He didn't have any walks today and he's had one of these stinker outtings every month except July.  Let's hope he bounces back and gets it done.  I also am puzzled why he pitched last night with the 6 run lead?  I thought that would be an ideal situation to use Wood, i.e., if Wood is cleared to go back-to-back then why not let him work on his control with a 6 run lead?   It won't get easier than that?

This ballgame is in the refrigerator for the Dodgers, door closed, lights out.

Dempster was pitching well, throwing strikes and getting ahead of the3 hitters all you could ask of a closer. He just made too many mistakes over the plate.

Dempster wasn't the problem
He was bound to blow another one at some point.

The problem was not giving him insurance. The problem was also Lou using him last night.

by lancaster99 on Sep 6, 2007 3:55 PM CDT reply actions

I disagree
Yes the Cubs missed a few opportunities, but a closer is supposed to be able to come in and get the opposition 1,2,3.  Granted it isn't possible to do all of the time, and there will be blown saves, but Dempster is always making things so close, and he doesn't usually come in and just take em down 1,2,3.  We need someone that can make saves and do it quickly.

isn't in the same league as Hoffman, etc., only 3 blown saves on this team is pretty damn good. Gotta get'em in the bottom.

He has blown non save situations where he came in with the Cubs up by four runs.  Still decent, but pitching him night to day game was not bright.

On a wind blow homer that barely makes it into the basket.  "Sh#t happens." We gotta move on.  He had 13 saves in a row.

3 more chances for the good guys.  GO CUBS!!

Time to be realistic. This team will be at home, eating chips on the couch in October. This team isn't good, nor do they have the guts to win. Its a load of crap. Nothing like feeling like a God damn fool for 6 months hoping they can hack it. I'm sure I'm going to hear "There is still time left" and all that other good stuff, well all that means is there is plenty of games left to piss down their cowardly legs. They're tired and getting worse. They are now the team that they were supposed to be; a .500 team at best. I hate to be this negative, I really do, but there comes a time when you need to look at the big picture and see that they are playing like crap, and can't take the heat.

by cubsnlinux on Sep 6, 2007 4:16 PM CDT reply actions

He should have yanked Dempster from warming up
last night when we took a six run lead.  There's no way you put Wuertz out there today for the save, and he should have seen that he would need Marmol, Howry or Dempster to close today.

by IllinoisCubs on Sep 6, 2007 4:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Closer
The most dominant pitcher on the Cubs staff is Marmol and he should be used whenever the Cubs are protecting a 1-run lead in the 9th.  Dempster can be used for all other "save" situations.  I'm fine with continuing to use Marmol for big outs in the 7th and 8th innings too.  But if he's available and the game is on the line in the 9th he should be used.  I don't care if Dempster's feelings get hurt or not.  Marmol is so clearly the Cubs best reliever it's not even funny.

by cubsbak on Sep 6, 2007 4:17 PM CDT reply actions

I almost wish we were out of it. It is utter madness to play baseball this mediocre and still be in first place. It's like dangling bacon in front of a starving Rottweiler. It feels over, but it just isn't. So now I have to stare up at the dangling bacon for another 3 fucking weeks, only to have it snapped away on Sept. 30. Awesome.

This series was like the Cards series in '03?
If so then we're in trouble. That series went the other way, with the Cubs making the big comeback. If Soriano doesn't hit the HR it wouldn't have hurt as much.

The Cubs are probably going to lose a few more games before sept 31 rolls around... if you can't deal with it then don't watch... seriously!  The negativity around here is kinda gross.

Of course it sucks to lose games, yea i'm bummed and pissed off...and you should be too... but tomorrow is another day to battle!  There are 22 games left, and anything can happen.

Cubs tied for first
CUBS vs. PIT this weekend

Brewers vs. CIN in CIN.  They are on the road, they have to face Harrang and Aroyyo.

Cards vs. ARI in ARI, they have to face Webb, Owings, and Davis.

I like our chances although it is bad news that we face Ian Snell and Gorzelanny, two lefties.  Matt Morris on Sunday.

We have Hill, Zambrano and Traschel going.  Mixed news, we'll see which verison of each pitcher shows up.

I think in effect what you are or posters like yourself are doing is putting up a facade of optimism. Optimism is good, but its not bad to call out Dempster for today's loss or all of our shortcomings. Some people vent it all out up here, some throw things at home while some others simply don't let out the anger in them. So basically different people deal with stuff differently. Also some of the high riding comments sound as if we have been winning consistently for the past umpteen years and everyone is just freaking out today. When you fail an exam multiple times aren't you nervous the next time you go for it? Its natural.

by cubsnlinux on Sep 6, 2007 4:37 PM CDT up reply actions

i appreciate your evaluation
but no, its not a facade.

i can't answer for the other commenters who try and stay posi, but i'm sure they wouldn't appreciate you calling it a facade.

lastly, this is the 2007 Cubs.  I don't particularly care about what happened in '03 or '04 or '89 or '69 or '45 or '84 etc etc etc.

in my opinion, this team has showed me they aren't going to give up.  i'm just trying to give that same respect back to them.

jump all over?
how does a little positive attitude constitute jumping all over someone?  i'm trying to provide some perspective on one game here, and its very apparent that some people don't want to hear that, so ok... lesson learned for me.

Hey
just wanted to post to get to 1,000.
I am sure everyone has dumped on Dempster, and I agree I had a not so positive look at the ninth when he came in. However, first blown save since June 10. He is what he is, I just don't see a change this late, but who knows Lou does mix it up.
I would not be surprised if he goes with Marmol.

This reminds me what my friend-coach
in another sport would do after a tough loss. Wind blowing out Piniella knows the Cubs should have scored more runs before the 4 generated by Soriano.

He is looking at mental mistakes all over the place today and earlier this week. He will come down hard on this road trip. No fooling around on this trip to Pittsburgh I dare say.

There are other notable examples, AAA player being late, Ward being picked off not once but now twice...(advanced scouts have picked up this weakness on Ward), Soriano is being pitched the same as he is waving at sliders three feet outside and Lee is guessing and missing fastballs in his hot zone.

Sorry to rain in the optimists parade.
But facts are facts. Assuming that the Cardinals win today, the three contenders in the Comedy Central will have the exact same number of defeats (68). What that means is that any of those teams can win more games than what they lose the rest of the season and still be out of the playoffs. Whoever goes on the longest hot streak will win. One game, one loss, may make the difference. In fact, it's probable that we already saw the loss that makes that difference. We just don't know it yet.

Right now, of those three teams, the Cubs are the ones with a losing record in September, at home no less! And the other two teams have the Cinderella story that the media likes (Brewers: first timers; Cardinals: Ankiel). That means that the motivational factor will not favor the Cubs either.

Having blown their advantages (home field and first in the standings), the Cubs would have to win the division on the road, in Florida and Cincinnati. However, the Cubs have losing records against both teams this year.

Can it be done? Sure, it can. But it's uphill right now and the team has no one to blame but themselves. They controlled their fate until today. They don't anymore. That is cause for concern but not to throw in the towel... yet.

by Fraggin Judge on Sep 6, 2007 5:16 PM CDT reply actions

Uhh.......
They will be tied for first today against a team they have won the season series against, so yes, they still can control their fate.  Maybe you don't understand how this works....

The optimists are saying "Today is cause for concern but don't throw the towel in yet."  I don't think anyone is saying, "Oh goodie, we lost, but don't worry we are going 20-5 the rest of the way!"  You are basically saying the same thing.

by IllinoisCubs on Sep 6, 2007 5:20 PM CDT up reply actions

What I'm saying is that it is not how many...
games the Cubs win. The determinant factor now is how many the other three teams lose. To take an extreme example: The Cubs can win every game left but if the Brewers do the same thing both teams have to face each other in a one game playoff and if the Cubs lose only that game, they are out of the post season. That is what today's defeat means. The Cubs do not control their fate anymore.

by Fraggin Judge on Sep 6, 2007 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually no...
the Cubs absolutely still control their own destiny.  If they win out, they go to the playoffs.

Sure, it's not going to be easy from here on out, and pretty much everyone has a similar shot at this point (i.e, none of the 3 teams are very good, so any of the 3 could win it).  I agree that there is reason for disappointment and frustration right now (losing 3 of 4 at home in a pennant race is bad).

But to say that we don't control our destiny is just flat out wrong.  If we win out (including the one-game playoff if necessary), we win the division.  The scenario you presented (win out then lose the playoffs requires us to not win out.

by Neifi Puppy on Sep 6, 2007 5:17 PM CDT reply actions

Another one on Lou.
Before we annoint Lou manager of the year and vent our frustrations on Dempster, remember who brought Dempster in the last inning last night, in a non-save situation, and still wanted the guy to be fresh today, in a save situation. Lou had a lot of fresh arms in that pen last night but didn't use them. You can't run a pen like that in a division race. Now I understand how Seattle lost when Lou managed them despite having the best record in the regular season.

I'm down, but not out
We all know it was bound to happen at some point. Dempster, for all his faults, has been nails over the last month and a half. If it was going to happen, better today than 9/30 in Cincy down by a game in the standings. We have almost a full month to recover from this, and the schedule is very, very favorable.

I know this will shock NotBruce, but I refuse to be devastated by this loss. Shocking to the system ? Hell yes. But this is the best team in the division, with the best road left to travel, and quite possibly the best manager. Will this team get there when all is said and done ? I don't know, but I like the Cubs chances better than the Cards' or Brewers'.

by scotteboy on Sep 6, 2007 5:25 PM CDT reply actions

Well, if that is so, then...
the Cubs should start playing like the best team in the division, winning on the road, and the manager should make better moves with the bullpen and the lineups, like the best manager in the division (who, BTW, is LaRussa, and he's proven it once more this year).

by Fraggin Judge on Sep 6, 2007 5:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I fully agree
I'm usually a fly-off-the-handle ranter when things go bad. But not today.

Like I said, I don't know if this team will get there, but they sure as hell have the best road left to travel, they're the most talented 1-25, and have (arguably) the best manager. It might go down to the last Sunday, but I won't be surprised if it doesn't. I also won't be surprised if St. Louis goes on a 8-3 streak over the next 11 and puts some distance between themselves and the Cubs and Brewers.

I just refuse to think that today is the end.

perhaps pitching Dumpster last night, in a blowout, before a following day game, might not have been a great decision.

Cubs By The Numbers

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way. For everyone who's a Cubs fan, anyone who ever wore the uniform is like family. Cubs By The Numbers reintroduces readers to some of their long-lost ancestors, even ones they think they already know.
