Snopes debunks a 1908 myth.

4

"In late September [1908] the third team in the National League race, the Pirates, was playing the Cubs. In the ninth inning, with Chicago ahead 2-0 and the visiting Pirates at bat with the bases loaded, second baseman Ed Abbaticchio hit a rocket down the right-field line. [Umpire Hank] O'Day ruled it foul, the Cubs won the game, and went on to win the pennant by one game over the Pirates as well as taking the playoff from the Giants. Several months later, though, a woman fan brought a lawsuit to court, alleging injury suffered when she was struck by Abbaticchio's smash, an occurrence attested to in sworn statements by various witnesses. But the court ending up ruling against her -- not because her story wasn't believed, but because it was conclusively established that she had been sitting in fair territory at the time." Mark DeRosa Interviewed on The Pitch Podcast

+

The Pitch is a baseball podcast offered via sports Web site mvn.com and hosted by a gentleman named Brandon Rosage. Once a week, it also features Cubs blogger Joey Aiello of View From the Bleachers as a co-host. In its Week 26 episode, the Pitch features an interview with a rather tired sounding, but amicable, Mark DeRosa. Subjects covered include the Roberts trade and Mark's newfound love of baseball blogging. I've really come to enjoy The Pitch and heartily recommend this episode.

AP's Bartman Story Appears

10

There was some discussion a week or so ago about the AP reporter who was working on a story about how the Cub community feels about Steve Bartman. Here it is, and it looks like our hopes were realized - it's pretty much 100% about how no one is holding a grudge against him!

Physicists Say Headfirst Slide to Base Faster, Maybe

9

I derided one Ronaldo Cedeño a few days ago for sliding head-first into first base. After reading the information presented by the "experts," I still maintain it's a boneheaded move. The study doesn't necessarily delve into first base, head-first slides, but it's interesting nonetheless.

This is a week late, but I never saw that photo until today... and I love it.

CUBS PLAYOFF RALLY '08

6

According to the Cubs website this years rally will be on Tuesday, 9/30/08 from 12PM to 12:45. Hall of Famer Billy Williams, WGN Radio's Ron Santo and Cubs chairman Crane Kenney were scheduled to appear. Actor Jim Belushi will be the emcee and Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley are expected to attend. This is one of those times I'm glad to be working downtown. FYI, it will be in the 60's so wear your fall Cubs gear.

Geovany Soto an admittedly big surprise to the Puerto Rican press.

10

Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Día publishes an article today praising the work of Geovany Soto, probable Rookie of the Year in the NL. His performance and Carlos Delgado's were the bright spot among Puerto Ricans in the major leagues, according to the article's author, Carlos Rosa. At last, Soto's hometown press are starting to notice him.

Sheets to start on Saturday

Gimpy elbow and all. I can't blame the guy for wanting to be out there, and maybe he does feel good. But my gut says he's not going to be at 100%.
