Bleacher Reconstruction Update - December 24

It's 42 degrees, cloudy and foggy, and drizzling lightly in Chicago today.

You know. Opening Day weather.

It seemed like a nice enough day, though, to head over to the ballpark and take some pre-holiday photos. There have been some changes in what you can see from the street, as you'll see below.

After this, the "baseball" weather had me in a real ballpark mood, so I stopped by Jimmy John's on Clark for a sandwich.

Top: behind CF from corner of Waveland & Sheffield (note small 'Christmas tree' the workers put next to the under-construction elevator shaft); looking west from the corner; underneath left-center field; the stacked metal pieces will eventually form the back walkway (this view is in RF)

Middle: behind right-center field, with doors open showing snowy field of play; the "knothole"; behind CF looking towards RF; the nearly-completed LF walkway

Bottom: another view of the walkway where you can also see the underpinnings for the rows of benches being constructed; looking east down Waveland, the furthest west section now covered with tarps; long view down Waveland behind LF; view showing the old concrete which will remain, and the steel structure which will house the rows behind the old, clearly showing that the "sweep" of the seats will remain the same, despite rumors to the contrary

Al..
One of these days, you should give me a ringle when you're heading up to the park... We can meet at Jimmy Johns, you know... talk about the good ol' days when Mark Prior toed the rubber at he Friendly Confines.

I too am getting a new digital camera for Christmas... Ol' Sparky bit the dust a while back. I was at the Circuit City yesterday scoping it out and I saw a couple I really liked. An Olympus, which my wife couldn't keep her hands off of... A Nikon that had a lens that you could swivel into all kinds of useful angles, and a couple of nice Canon's... just not the little ones. Don't want them.

Any suggestions?

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to you and yours, Al.

The new camera...
... is a Nikon Coolpix 4100. You know, I thought I didn't want "one of the little ones" either, but this one does everything I want it to do, is 4+ megapixels (and as long as you don't need to blow up pix to poster size, that ought to be plenty), and is easy to operate and carry.

Any of the brands you mention would be fine, I think.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, to you, too.

Cubs colored fireworks signify a Cubbies Win at Wrigley West.

Actually, there was a patriotic fireworks display after the game. I don't say this as an Oakland A's fan, but I'll tell you without reservation that fireworks games are better at the Oakland Colisseum.

Tonight's fireworks were over the bay and into the fog. Also, the best audio is inside the stadium while the best views are outside of it.

Usually in Oakland, people are let on the field, the speaker pump music through the stadium, and fireworks are shot overhead from the bridge that connects the stadium to the BART trains.

Long story short--come for the cubs v. giants game, leave for the train ASAP.

CUBS WIN!!

Kerry Wood just struck out Fred Lewis despite giving up a triple to Bengie Molina. It was a close call for a slugfest of a game!

There's nothing like having the true blue fans rise up and cheer on our road warriors.
This is the right field wall that separates McCovey Cove and the stadium. Can you pick out all the blue in the stands? I nominate this place as Wrigley West--just grow soe Wrigleyville ivy on those bricks!

Fact: There is a splash hit counter toward the other end of the wall, and it only counts homers hit into the bay by SF Giants. They call them "legitimate splash hits."

What a crock!
It was Veterans Appreciation Day at AT&T Park, hence the military band and flag bearers. It was cool to see SF legend Willie Mays get honored for his military service.
