Read Between The Lines

Dusty Baker, after the game today:

It's not fair to Carlos to go to Dempster right away, and it's not fair to Dempster to go to him right away because he's never closed and been in that situation. You'd prefer to break him in with a three-run save, not a one-run save with Bobby Abreu coming up there. We're going to make it work. I'm just glad the monkey's off our back.

Jim Hendry, on Dempster:
I think Dempster can do anything.

This clearly says to me that this move was dictated to Baker by Hendry. Good for him.

Also, from ESPN.com:
Right-hander Jon Leicester is getting recalled from Triple-A Iowa to start in Dempster's place Monday.

Wonder who's getting sent down? In any case, with three days off in the next two weeks, Leicester will probably head back to Iowa after the game. There won't be a fifth starter needed until about May 24.

According to WSCR, his first start for Iowa (today) was less than stellar. He gave nine runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Hendry Laying Down the Law?
Maybe Hendry is realizing that Baker's problems are reflecting poorly on him. This is posted in the Tribune tonight.

Dubois gets his chance

Jason Dubois will get a shot at becoming the everyday left fielder, beginning Monday.

The Cubs have decided to make Todd Hollandsworth a backup and aren't currently seeking outfield help.

"I don't know how significant a guy you could get now," general manager Jim Hendry said. "The wish list we all maybe would aspire to [isn't] always something the other club wants to do."

Good...
... now Dubois will get a chance to succeed or fail on actual performance, rather than just the fact that he's "young and inexperienced".

I'm betting he succeeds.

Finally!
Now our bench gets that much stronger with Holly where he belongs. This is a great move and should have been made weeks ago.

Dubois - New Strikeout King
I agree that starting Jason is l  o  n  g overdue, but 13 strikeouts in 30 ABs so far?

Wow, brings back bad memories of Sammy!

Jason didn't get the start tonight. I wonder if Dusty is defying Hendry's orders...
