Happy Birthday, Neifi!

Neifi! turns 32 today and celebrated by hitting a three-run homer, two singles and a double, and scoring three runs.

Derrek Lee did him one better -- having five hits, four RBI, a three-run jack of his own, and he is now leading the NL in all three Triple Crown categories. His 50 RBI in 51 games project to nearly 160 for the season.

Before I talk more about the Cubs' sixth win in a row, 9-5 over the Dodgers, giving them their first three-game series sweep of the season, I have a couple of rants.

[rant one]

The people at Comcast Sports Net are idiots.

I do understand TV schedules and how at times, both Chicago teams wind up on CSN and thus, one must go to CSN Plus.

There wasn't a CSN Plus last night -- usually these games go to CLTV, at least on Comcast Cable in Chicago. And Comcast's own on-screen schedule showed CLTV showing "Baseball" from 9 pm to midnight CT -- that should have been the Cub game. Instead, there was the usual dopey talk show with Lou Canellis.

On CSN's main channel, the White Sox were dragging out their 10-7 loss to the Angels by hitting way too many foul balls -- and I'm not even talking about Hawk Harrelson here -- and so, at 9:10 when the Cubs' first pitch happened, the Cubs were nowhere to be seen. Instead, we got a lower-third-of-the-screen scorebox updating the game.

This isn't necessarily so bad -- though CSN didn't manage to spell John Koronka's name right -- but what was really bad was what happened after the Sox game was over.

I have worked in the TV business long enough to know that when a sports event runs over its allotted time (in this case, past 9 pm CT), they are supposed to do what's called a "panic close" -- i.e. they dispense with extra commercial breaks, closing billboards, etc.

CSN did NONE of this. There was a leisurely recap, then a "we'll be right back", then what seemed like about a four-minute commercial cluster including two airings of the same spot for a local pizza joint, then closing billboards, then a promo for a Sox game that doesn't air till next Monday.

I spent part of this time watching LaTroy Hawkins implode yet again, giving up a grand slam which resulted in 10-6 Phillies win over the Giants. I won't gloat over this misfortune -- I'll only say that this confirms my happiness that he's no longer a Cub.

The Cub game didn't pop up till the top of the second, at which time two runners were already on base.

Finally, Len and Bob didn't say a word about this, and there were no highlights (not that there were any) of the first inning.

This never happened with Fox Sports Net. What made it worse was -- I have Comcast digital cable. They've got about 500 channels. There isn't ONE of these that can carry the Cub game?

Ridiculous.

[end rant one]

[rant two]

You can say that not having Neifi! in the top five of the All-Star balloting is understandable -- after all, writing in votes is much harder than just punching a ballot.

That's even more painfully obvious when you look at the early All-Star voting results.

As I wrote last night -- how can you vote for Nomar when he's hurt? Are these people just voting for someone they've heard of? At some point this system is going to have to change -- and even worse omissions are:

  • Derrek Lee, having an MVP season, with less than half the votes of Albert Pujols;
  • Larry Walker and Ken Griffey Jr. running 3rd and 4th in the NL outfield voting;
  • Mike Piazza leading the catchers' vote. Michael Barrett's having just about as good a year and running fifth.
I guess the "fans" will get the All-Star teams they deserve, but those of us who really know what's going on in baseball will have to grit our teeth and see some deserving players stay home. Sure, Lee will make the team -- but he ought to be the starter.

[end rant two]

And we can afford such rants, because as Mike said, the Cubs are suddenly winning games in the same way they were losing them -- instead of bad bullpen pitching, we are getting solid performances from everyone; instead of running ourselves out of innings, we are getting timely hits; and John Koronka (whose mother, girlfriend, and girlfriend's mother were shown way too many times on camera by CSN) threw credibly in his first major league start.

For more in-person details on last night's game, I commend you to the diaries by Clay and Bryan. Thanks, you guys.

On to San Diego, and for those of you who were ready to tank the season -- the Cubs are currently two games (one in the loss column) out of the wild card lead.

Cub game on TV
Here in Orlando, we got the game on ESPN2 with some guy whose name I can't remember and Eric Karros.  I don't think it was an MLB Extra Innings feed...I think it was on regular old ESPN2.  Weird.

Strange that somebody across the country could get a 'better' feed than somebody in Chicago....though we don't get the Saturday Fox games here.  Really gets to me that I missed the Sat Cubs/Sox game and that I will miss the upcoming Cubs/Red Sox game.  Oh well, there's always MLB Audio and Pat & Ron.

TV
the odd thing was, for some reason, ESPN2 (Berman, Stone, and Brantley) was showing the end of the White Sox when I walked into my place at 9:15, so they were actually on 2 stations.

ESPN2 did the quick dump that Al talked about, but since the Cubs were blacked out we got Padres-Brewers.

by goldstj2 on Jun 2, 2005 10:01 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It was definitely ESPN2, as the Cubs were on...
Wednesday night baseball. I might add that Karros was fantastic and makes we wonder if we could ever get him to be the color-man once Brenley gets a managerial job again. Al, you'll be happy for the rest of us to know that ESPN2 was showing both the White Sox and Cubs games, and cut IMMEDIATELY from Comiskey to Chaves-Ravine once the White Sox game ended. So, yes we definitely had a better feed than those of you in Chicago.

Cubs/Padres is on ESPN tonight, and Karros will be doing the game again.

The Cubs will thrive in twenty-oh-five!

Then...
... ESPN2 did it right.

Ever since CSN took over, I have found their production techniques amateurish -- this despite the fact that they hired quite a few of the FSN people who had been doing games for years.

by Al on Jun 2, 2005 12:34 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

As I've said...
... the production quality of CSN reminds me of a high school television show. The music sounds like cheesy public domain crap. The graphics, especially the intro sequences may have wowed people back in the early '90s. The anchors are annoying (is anyone else who has watched the Chicago Tribune show totally uncomfortable watching Dan Jiggets?).

I don't see how the powers that be at CSN aren't totally embarrassed by the quality of their product.

All Star leaders
I saw that current NL All Star leaderboard and wondered if it isn't the worst ever.

I've been critical of Neifi?, but he's a much better choice than the majority of that roster, if it comes to be!

Here in Orlando, we got the game on ESPN2 with some guy whose name I can't remember and Eric Karros.

I thought Karros did a fine job.  I hope to hear him again.

by dvdmgsr on Jun 2, 2005 10:03 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Karros
I thought Karros did a good job as well, except he said that the pitchers were thinking "I'm not going to let Derrek Lee beat me" about forty-six billion times during his at-bats.  And as it turned out, he did beat them.

by andyrut on Jun 2, 2005 10:33 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i think he was saying...
the pitchers should pitch around Lee, so that there was no way he could beat them (again). So, the fact the Lee DID beat them i think proved Karros right - they should have pitched around him.
The Cubs will thrive in twenty-oh-five!

Broadcast
I had the game on ESPN 2 OR MLB Extra Innings. I grtted my teeth and listened to Scully for the first 2 innings then watched the ESPN feed.

Somebody kept saying . . .
. . . keep the faith.  Thanks, Al.

If the Cubs find themselves in as good of shape at the end of June, I'll be ecstatic.  The June schedule scares the jeepers out of me.  But good baseball = wins.

On another note, I'm pleased to hear that the toxic superfund site AKA Danny Graves is unlikely to be wearing Cubbie Blue. Good news indeed.

by ivy drip on Jun 2, 2005 10:14 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I've said it all along
Baseball is a marathon, not a sprint.  I try to keep an open mind about the Cubs chances, even when others are ready to throw in the towel.  Conversely, I try not to get too optimistic during surges like the one we're currently going through.  The latter is harder for me, since I'm an optimist by nature.

As for the All-Star ballot, I think people do just check names they know.  I agree that the system has to be changed somehow, though.  There has to be some way to keep fan participation without letting the most ill-informed among us pick an All-Star squad from hell.

by SuperContext on Jun 2, 2005 10:28 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Simply stated:
We are going to learn a hell of a lot more about what this team is about in the next four days than we learned about them in the last six.

by dvdmgsr on Jun 2, 2005 11:38 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Absolutely true...
... at this point, I'd be very, very happy with a split in San Diego.

by Al on Jun 2, 2005 12:35 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

More precisely
I'd be happy with a split, I guess, but more importantly, I want to see them play with the life they've shown, well, since Prior went down.

If they lose fighting tooth and nail, I'll still see it as a good sign.

I ain't declaring the Dead Parrot reanimated until this nasty stretch of games is over.

All star ballot
Maybe MLB could do a second printing of the All-Star ballot after 1/4 of the season.  They could then put players on that were left off (rookies, injury fillers ect.) and to take players off that are on the DL or have been replaced as starter.

by Boilerfan on Jun 2, 2005 10:49 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This time it counts...
Just a quick comment about the All-Star voting...

I think letting the fans pick the starters is fine if the game is played as an exhibition (as it should be).  Put your fan favorites and aging heroes on the field and play ball.

If MLB is going to continue with the ridiculous idea of letting the All-Star game determine home-field advantage in the World Series, you've got to let each league put its best players on the field.

by hokie316 on Jun 2, 2005 10:54 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Unintended outcome
Making the game meaningful and allowing fans to vote for both leagues creates perverse incentives for voters.  It, for example, makes National League fans vote for the worst players in the American League to increase the liklihood that his/her team would get home field advantage in the World Series.

by ajksteet on Jun 2, 2005 11:56 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nomar at the ASG?
On my way home from the game last night I heard them say this on Dodger Talk, the postgame radio show, and I thought they were kidding. I think this is just a case of people voting for their one or two favorite active players and then filling out the rest of the ballot by checking off recognizable names - I mean, even Griffey is a questionable choice for the ASG this year, but everyone knows his name and that's got to be good for a number of votes. Regardless, at least Ken is active (for now) and, although I've been looking forward to seeing Nomar play in a Cubs uniform again, no amount of votes is going to change the rate of Nomar's recovery. I wonder if and how they'll change the system if Nomar gets voted in.

by keepscore on Jun 2, 2005 12:41 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think...
... that's exactly the way most people fill out ballots. It's ridiculous, particularly, as was pointed out above, if the game is going to mean home field in the WS.

Something will have to be done if a player -- Nomar -- who was hurt over a month ago, makes the starting lineup.

by Al on Jun 2, 2005 12:42 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

exactly
This isn't meaninless anymore. It's not simply an exhibition game. It decides home field advantage for the World Series. If Selig wants an exhibition, more power to him. If he wants something that can give an edge to the eventual WS winner, they need to make some changes to how the players are decided. I don't like much of what Bob Brenly adds to the broadcast, but last night he said that if he, as the ASG manager is going to be expected to win, he should be allowed to choose the team.

representin'
Who else saw this on cubs.com today?

"I'll go for Nomar. I'll represent Nomar." -- Cubs shortstop Neifi Perez, who is willing to sub for Nomar Garciaparra at the All-Star Game.

I for one would love to see Neifi! go to the ASG.  He always seems to enjoy the game, and that enthusiasm is much needed on a team often ruled by bitterness and gloom.  I hope he continues to have a great season and show all the Neisayers what he's made of.

Biggest AS omission among voting is Izturis

...IMHO anyway. Izturis isn't even in the top 5 for SS. WHat a total joke. Izturis is easily the best overall SS in the NL, but you won't see him on Sportscenter getting all the hype that some of these others get.

He's 3rd in BA in the entire league and is the best Defensive SS in the League and perhaps in both Leagues.

HTH!

by Al on Jun 2, 2005 3:29 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Absolutely
Unfortunately, Ceasar Isturez plays while a good part of the nation is either sleeping, or preparing to sleep. But he's unquestionably the best shortstop in the NL this year, and anyone who's seen him play on a regular basis would agree. His omission is a disgrace, and is another excellent example why the All-Star game balloting or importance should be changed.

I'm voting for Little Ceasar, and I have an Angels jersey with Eckstien's name on it hanging in my closet. It's a very clear choice, imo.

Thanks.....Al
Interestingly enough, it doesn't look any more enlightening or credible over here.

Also, thanks for letting those who didn't know that I originally had it in the wrong place, know that I originally had it in the wrong place.

I'm fine with Izturis as the starter
but, I'm still voting for Neifi!.  Eckstein is not having half the year that Neifi! is.
Embrace the Neifi!

by Whitebacon on Jun 2, 2005 7:18 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes, Neifi! is better.
And I would vote for him if I didn't think Little Ceasar needed the votes, but Izzy does need the votes. I just mentioned Eckstein because even though I have always loved his hustle and how well he approaches the game, I am still willing to vote for a player I like (a little) less because Izzy's performace is so outstanding.

by helen on Jun 2, 2005 8:42 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I said this before...
...and it might be even more true now. The way to get Neifi! in the ASG is to vote Nomar. He's the only Cub that has support outside Chicago. He's the only Cub who has the popularity to beat the St. Louis vote machine.

Our fan base isn't as strong as it used to be. This isn't the same fan base that voted Sammy Sosa in as a starter when he had no business in the game at all.

This is the same fan base that couldn't get Aramis Ramirez in last year's ASG when he was tied with Bobby Abreu going into the final day.

We all need to look at ourselves in the mirror and know it's true. It's why Yadier Molina has more votes than Michael Barrett. It's why Derrek Lee can't get half the votes of Albert Pujols... and it's why they're going to get David Eckstein a starting spot unless we do something about it.

And that something isn't voting Neifi! As cool as it would be to get a write-in candidate into the top 5 or even top 10, we're not strong enough to make that happen. We need to get behind Nomar because one spot is going to Izturis and the other spot is between Barmes and Neifi!, but not if it's guaranteed to Eckstein first.
