Poor Corey...
he doesn't even get his #20!!  I am pretty kind to anyone that wears a Cub uniform for a decent amount of time, so I feel kind of bad for him.  But I really think he wasn't fixing anything he is fixing now, so it is mostly all his fault.  Even though I liked Corey at one point, I think he isn't staying because I feel like Felix Pie is coming if not this year next year.

We have an overload of pitching....
we should give them someone else.  I think Hill maybe our next lefty starter.  But if Griffey is going to help us win I would do the trade too, but I'm not sure of it.

Rich Hill
wont start until he learns to get right handed hitters out.  He's a lefty specialist until then.

what numbers are you looking at?
He has a dominant H/IP ratio throughout his mior league career.

You looking at his major league debut?  Then consider his 4 1/3 innings of hitless relief against MIL.

Hill's acchilles heel has been throwing strikes, not getting hit around.

Well, except...
... are you willing to take on that big a contract, when there's considerable risk that by the time it's up, Griffey might be done?

by Al Yellon on Jul 20, 2005 3:57 AM CDT up reply actions

Griffey's Contract
If you're talking about ALL of it, short answer is no. If the Reds pick up the deferred portion, then yes. It's weird, but Griffey, at 35 or so, and despite the 500+ homers, seems to have finally found a way to play within himself and not get injured. I'm only half kidding, because by this time of year he usually has had some significant time down.

All the Pie talk eerily reminds me of the rush to get Patterson to the majors. By the time he got there, it seemed we'd been hearing about him for years and as of now he's only 25. The problems with him are so fundamental (pitch selection comes to mind) that I'd rather see Pie spend an extra year in Triple A while someone like Griffey (or even Pierre) is in his place instead.

Agreed on Pie...
... Patterson will be 26 next month, way beyond "prospect" age. He was definitely rushed too fast.

I wouldn't put Pie in a major league starting lineup till at least 2007.

The Reds
more than likely will not pick up almost 60 million dollars to give him away.  That deferred payment would be their reason for trading him in the first place.

by liverj00 on Jul 20, 2005 10:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Griffey...
... would accept a trade, but:
Only to the right team. It would have to be a top contender because I want to win. I want a World Series ring. I'm tired of looking at my dad's three World Series rings.

Griffey Trade
Be that as it may, I still do not think the Cubs will even try to get Griffey unless something is done up front about that huge contract of his.

His per season money is not that bad (although, do to his recent string of injuries - a bit higher then what I would like to see the Cubs pay), but the money that is defered is a deal breaker. There is no way the Cubs will take on that contract. It would keep the club from being able to go get free agents in future years and i do not think Hendry would do something that stupid.

All that being said, if the contract thing could be resolved, I'm all for the Cubs getting Griffey. He is a pretty good outfielder (when he isn't hurt), he is reputed to be a good clubhouse guy and I think that he would help the club greatly.

the question then becomes
is he willing to eat some of the deferred money to get a Wordl Series ring?

Seriously, I see the back-loaded portion of his contract as to being the huge stumbling block for any contender.

by socalbob on Jul 20, 2005 12:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with both these comments...
... it would likely be worth it to the Cubs if the contract could be restructured somehow, and the cost in players not too great.

Worth looking into, anyway. Griffey's right -- he's not likely to win a ring if he stays in Cincinnati.
