Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

The End Of An Era

I had a whole wax-poetic post in my mind on leaving the Cubs' 8-5 season-ending win over the Rockies, how I shared it with my son Mark, on a picture-perfect, cloudless day, saw some well-played baseball (and how rare was that all year?), a stirring comeback, and how we all shook hands among ourselves, as we do each fall, and looked forward to next spring.

Poetic, but ultimately meaningless, as the big story of the day happened right after the game ended, with team president Andy MacPhail's surprise resignation being announced in a hastily called press conference.

Those of you who have been calling for MacPhail's head are undoubtedly dancing happily this afternoon. Me, I'm six-of-one-half-dozen-of-the-other. While MacPhail's term in office was ultimately a failure -- oh, how clever you all are, terming him "MacFail" -- it surely was not all his fault. To his credit, in the press conference, he took responsibility for what has happened to this franchise, said the results were not acceptable, and intimated that this move had been in the works for several months.

John McDonough, who has been the head of marketing and broadcasting for some time, will take over on an "interim" basis. It was not made clear how long this "interim" status will last. In his remarks, McDonough said all the right things -- Mark asked me in the car what he meant when he said "I know what I do not know", and in fact, that's a very important thing to say. It is an acknowledgement that he is smart enough to know that he doesn't know everything about being a team president, and he is willing to listen and learn. Let us hope that he means that.

Many of you think it's likely that Jim Hendry will follow MacPhail out the door, and I don't see that happening; as has been said many times here, the Tribune Co. doesn't like eating contracts or admitting mistakes of this nature, and I do think Hendry is on the spot to produce NOW, or he might be out of a job by the middle of next season. That's the right thing to do. They gave him a vote of confidence with the extension -- now it's put-up-or-shut-up time.

It has been suggested to me that this means a sale of the club is "close". I have my doubts, but only time will tell.

What time will show us for certain, tomorrow, is the expected announcement in a 9 am press conference, that Dusty Baker will not be retained as manager. It could be a contentious press conference if Baker attends; we'll see if he actually does show up. Baker was booed when he came out to replace Les Walrond in the seventh inning, and again in the 8th when he took Will Ohman out, and I heard "Goodbye Dusty" chants in the bleachers toward the end of the game.

As has been written here and elsewhere -- there are, and have been, good and reasonable arguments against Dusty Baker's managerial style and tactics. But the way you read and hear things about him, you'd think he is an axe murderer. He is certainly not that. I believe Dusty Baker is a good human being who failed at his work. This doesn't make him any different from dozens of other major league baseball managers, or indeed, thousands of other managers in thousands of other businesses in this country. You either produce positive results for your business or you are replaced. Baker failed, and we do not have to recount the ways; they are well-known. Tomorrow, the search for his replacement will begin.

About that, the thought has been expressed to me -- and I do not necessarily agree with it -- that since Hendry is under such intense pressure to win now, that he will not entrust whatever the revised 2007 roster will contain, to a first-time manager. There are good arguments both pro and con about this -- look what Ozzie Guillen did as a first-time manager, or Mike Scioscia. On the other hand, would Fredi Gonzalez -- my first choice -- be able to withstand the intense scrutiny and pressure that any man taking the Cubs job would get? That's the great unknown. Joe Girardi? The pros and cons of hiring Girardi have been debated, and well, on this site and others, and it does appear that he will be dismissed as Marlins manager within the next couple of days. Hendry would be remiss if he doesn't at least interview Girardi, and find out what caused all the fuss at Florida. Maybe some lessons have been learned.

We'll find out more, of course, in the days and weeks to come, and see what other managerial jobs are going to be open (at this writing, Florida, Washington, Philadelphia, Texas, San Francisco, Toronto, are all among teams that could be looking for new managers).

It's always a bit sad to leave the season behind, regardless of how bad it was, and this was absolutely, positively, the worst I have ever seen. It has to get better from here, and with this announcement today, the beginnings of the winds of change are already being felt.

Cub record watch: Juan Pierre finished the season with 699 at-bats; he was on deck when Boom-Boom struck out in the bottom of the 8th (let that be Fast Freddie's LAST at-bat in a Cub uniform!). That ties Dave Cash for fourth on the all-time list for most at-bats in a single season. Bob Howry's appearance allowed him to tie the Cubs' club record for games pitched in a season -- 84. And the announced attendance of 39,609 (which looked like about 30,000 in the house, brought out by the nice weather, most likely) made the Cubs' final season home attendance 3,123,215 -- second largest in team history.

Now THIS is something new team president McDonough must understand -- that those numbers are NOT going to be approached in 2007 unless massive changes are made in players and management. McDonough said his nature is to be "aggressive". Good. Start right away.

I like to leave each season with a quote from the late commissioner Bart Giamatti, and if you've been here long enough, you've surely seen this here before -- but it fits so well, as the sun sinks lower in the sky each afternoon, and the temperatures fade into winter:

It's designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything is new again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains comes, it stops, and leaves you to face the fall alone.

One last thing you should know about the game -- I wore the Neifi jersey to the park today. Thus, its record while on my back is 1-0. It shall be worn to the park again!

To success in 2007 and beyond. Don't leave BCB -- there will be plenty to talk about and discuss in the off-season, the weeks and months to come; for the near future, we'll talk about the club's next manager, I'll open playoff game threads each day, and sometime in November, the top-100 Cubs of all-time series will begin (for those of you who volunteered to write profiles -- please start getting them to me!).

To the future!

I want to thank you...
...for my first full season on BCB.  It has been difficult as a fan to wither away the worst season I've ever witnessed, but somehow Al, you have made BCB a fun place amongst the 96 losses.

Thank you!
I love being here to discuss the Cubs and baseball with all of you, too. All of you help make BCB the great community it has become.

I do not blame...
...Andy, Jim, or Dusty individually.  Injuries to superstars - D.Lee, pitchers, etc. - a horrible farm system, and overall bad free agent/trade acquisitions have made for this horrendous season.  Not Dusty, Jim, or Andy by themselves.  Hopefully the Cubs' faithful will stop going to games and the Tribune will realize we can't put up with this crap anymore.

by dtpollitt on Oct 1, 2006 5:29 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

who
in your opinion, is responsible for a horrible farm system, bad trades and FA aquisitions, and the reliance on injury prone players?

MacFail has been here 12 years.  Everyone responsible for those decisions has benn hired by him.

Well, I Blame Them All
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that building a quality farm system, and making quality free agent/trade acquisitions was kind of, uh, THEIR FREAKIN' JOBS!!  Who the heck are we supposed to blame?  The grounds crew? These are three complete and utter failures who deserve nothing from Cubs fans but our constant scorn and to be given the collective finger on their way out of town.  Andy MacFailure can go to hell for all I care, and his resignation is like the liberation of Paris for me.  He says today was not his proudest day. GOOD!! It's not ours either, Andy, no thanks to you. The last 12 years will be his legacy in Chicago, and he deserves every bit of bad press he has gotten.  Yes, I'm angry.  I'm furious over the state of the Cubs and having to go through another winter as the worst team in the National League.  Dusty gets the axe at dawn tomorrow, and so much the better.  Getting rid of two out of three failures is at least a good start.

Yes indeed, this has been a trying season to say the least but, as I've said before, you handled it with true class.  You're a true Cubs fan and I hope you don't tire from the demands of work, family and this blog because, even if I don't post very often, I look forward to it several times every day.  We'll get 'em next year.

Yeah
What Al said.

The only thing I think I disagree on is Hendry's fate.  He'll stick around for a while, but I think that whomever the Cubs decide to give the Presidency to is going to insist on having their own man in the job (or woman if it's Kim Ng).  They won't take the job on the condition that they take responsibility for the actions of a GM they didn't hire and can't fire.

Hendry may still be GM in Spring Training, but I'd bet by the time of the draft next season he'll be gone.

Al, thank you,
for all that you do, and for another season of sponsoring the classiest Cubs fan site there is.

No thanks to the classless fans at Wrigley today, who inspired this:

Baker was booed when he came out to replace Les Walrond in the seventh inning, and again in the 8th when he took Will Ohman out, and I heard "Goodbye Dusty" chants in the bleachers toward the end of the game.

I count myself among those most disappointed with this season and with Dusty's role in the performance of the Cubs, but there is no excuse for the abuse heaped on Dusty and other players this year.  I think Dusty will be glad to be out of Chicago and I don't blame him.  Let's try to do better next season, all.

by dfrancon on Oct 1, 2006 6:07 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed.
As I said, Baker is a good man who failed at his job. I think at this point, we can all move on and hope for better things.

baker
is not a good man. he's a bad person who was bad at his job. he deserves this.

by tomas21 on Oct 1, 2006 7:59 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Even if he is what you say, he didn't deserve
to be treated like that on the last day of the season. I'm sure he didn't try to have a bad season this year. I guess some people show a little class and some don't. Don't get me wrong, I hope he is not rehired. I disagree with his handling of the pitchers and not caring about on base percentages. But I don't think he tried to ruin the franchise.

by LT on Oct 1, 2006 8:30 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Then we will agree to disagree.
I do not know on what basis you say he is a "bad man". I have not seen any evidence of that.

In any case, we agree, he failed at his job and is about to be replaced. Let it go.

Well
it looks like the wheels of change are in motion. I'm guessing Dusty isn't back and Hendry may be let go if the Trib decides to completely clean house. Hopefully some good will come out of this truly awful season.

This was my first season on BCB - Thanks Al for providing a place to talk Cubs baseball. It's been fun being able to watch the games with other Cub fans, where ever we are, and provide running commentary. It's great to be able to talk and joke around like that during the games. So thanks again Al. And thanks to my fellow Cub fans who helped make this season a little more tolerable with their humor.

I hope next year that we have more to cheer than jeer.

If Hendry is on the spot to produce NOW...
...and this team has to start winning again next year...

(McDonough was quoted as saying, "anything less than a World Series is a failure to me," which is probably all talk from the Brave New Interim President, but it's the first time I've ever heard anything other than "competitive" come out of the mouth of any Cub Exec).

...then I think the farm gets blown up this Fall and a lot of young guys get dealt in an effort to rebuild, New York style, in order to win over the next 2-3 years, which means Pie, Veal, Hill, Pawalek, Gallagher, anyone of value, could get traded this offseason.

I think it's entirely possible that Cub management is becoming more and more afraid of that "100 years" tag getting slapped on the franchise and we could very well see more activity this offseason then the last 2 or 3 combined, not to mention the fact that if nothing drastic occurs, ticket sales will plummet.

I think the first order of business, after the departure of Dusty Baker, will be the announcement that Aramis Ramirez has re-signed for 14-15M per season.

Or, I could be completely wrong and the first order of business will be to bring back Jose Macias from exile, and we will see a chastened McDonough at his next PC talking about believing in the team currently assembled (plus a rejuvenated Macias) to turn the tide of losing.

Neither would surprise me.

Hard to say...
which way it goes...I don't know McPhail's salary but it's possible that he isn't replaced with a new hire (maybe the team will be sold).  I know the Tribune doesn't like to eat contracts but one way they might is if they hire a GM and give him a payroll that is equal to 2006 minus the new GM's salary and tell him to make it happen (very unlikely)...Still, I think Hendry isn't feeling so hot right now as the demands for winning in 2007 could be ridiculously high.  Still, he's better off making them fire him so that he gets paid...

He Can Deal With it or Be Gone
If Jim Beam can't handle the pressure of fixing the mess that he created, then he can book his fat ass on the next plane out of town with Andy and Dusty.  Yes, the pressure is on him.  And he deserves every bit of that pressure and more.  Deal with it, Jim.  There are a lot of people who would love to have your job, and most of them could do it a hell of a lot better than you.  Did I mention that I'm a little angry about the current state of my favorite team?

I was implying that...
there isn't much point in going forward with any person in the GM position if they are given an impossible task.  Hopefully, the Company decides quickly whether to sell the team.  If they keep it, then they should be looking to replace Hendry as well.  If they keep the team and hendry he's still pretty much in an impossible position...

Thanks to
Al and all the bloggers at BCB. I have been a Cubs fan since the womb and enjoyed reading all the posts and throwing in my 2 cents at times.
Following the Cubs is a love affair that is as strong as maybe the Red Sox. We ARE the best fans in baseball and since we have actually have had a few good teams that made the post season in the last 22 years we take losing even harder than ever. I was 11 years old when the Cubs first broke my heart in '69 and it did't get any easier in 84, 89, 98 and 03.
I will read the BCB blogs every day and enjoy talking about the moves relating to the upcoming season. As I do every year since I have moved from Chicago to AZ, I will be rooting them on at HoHoKam and hope to talk with all of you in person next spring!

Also, there is some speculation (I'd say a bit more than idle speculation, but not necessarily to the level of being a definitive source) that Fredi Gonzalez will take the Marlins job.  Where the carousel goes next no one knows, but Dusty damn well better not be coming out here to torment me in Washington to add insult to injury.  Neifi would look awful in red.

It will be interesting........
to see what they try to do, with a VERY marginal (and over rated) farm system, and already having one of the highest payrolls in the NL. Didn't sound like JP was too into returning in the brief post game interview on Comcast ("I'll definately consider it"), so there are going to be a lot of holes to fill. Will the embarrassed Trib let them take a run at Soriano an/or Zito? The Hot Stove should be a lot of fun this winter.

Great site.

Thank you
Al for a great site, help get through the frustration of a horrible year. And I agree, Dusty is good man, it just did not transulate to wins.

I too believe this is a collective failure from the front office, Dusty and his coaches, injuries, poor performance and a farm system that is below average.
I hope they make moves quickly, I do not like the word "Interm", it mean instability in my ears. This leads to players and possible managers away from the Cubs. So lets be careful people, McPhail is gone and Dusty will follow, but right now the Cubs are on shaky ground and 07 could be bumpy also. It is so important that they make the right manager hire, can not screw up this time.

Really good point on '07-
with the payroll being what it currently is, and the Tribune struggling, how much will Hendry be allowed to spend? The farm system is a mess- Triple A is mainly retread major leaguers. This could possibly get worse before it gets better- especilly in Ramirez walks (wait- walks? A Cub???)

John McDonough must not remain the President
If the president is to be in any way a player personel concerning position then McDonough must NOT remain President.  At the previous cubs convention I sat in on the session he led which was focused on the business side of the cubs and that is very much his position.

Every thing Paul Sullivan slammed Mcphail for in his article last week will be multiplied with the President of Marketing as the Team President.

At least McPhail was a bonafied baseball man but McDonough if anyone will bring the Cubs back to the "they fill the stadium anyway so why field a winner days?"

John McDonough as the Team President would be the worst thing possible for this team.

by JonH on Oct 1, 2006 7:08 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We'll just have to see...
I hardly would expect the director of marketing, at a marketing session to talk about Cub player personnel moves.

I don't think you sitting in for a dumbed-down marketing session at a Cubs Convention gives you any special insight into how good or bad McDonough is going to be.

If McDonough serves as he should
and guide the Cubs through the process of identifying and higher a legitimate management organization, his time as interim president will be a great positive to the Organization.  However, if McDonough remains in the president's chair for a protracted period of time all we're getting is Andy McPhail with less baseball knowledge - this team will continue on it's listless way.  Lets hope, McDonough understands this and does what's best for the club.

If you saw or heard...
the statements McDonough made, you might be willing to give the guy a shot before you hack him.

If he can bring the same excellence and highest standards to winning that he has done in his passion for marketing and profitably, we'll be in good shape.

He is born and bred Cub and said the resources will be there.

I am more concerned with Hendry staying.

As other writers have alluded to, he'll be gone if and when a new Prez. is hired.

A First
Regardless of whether or not a marketing/promotions guy belongs in the President's job, McDonnough is the first and only Cubs front office person I have ever heard declare publicly that the Cubs will win the World Series.  I have never heard that out of Wrigley Field before.  Whether he is blowing smoke or not remains to be seen, but the fact that he had the guts to say that publicly is a step in the right direction.  I sincerely hope that a world championship is the goal of this organization.  If so, it's about bloody time, but better late than never.

Thanks Al!!!
This was my first year reading any blog and I have really enjoyed it. I will continue to read this site everyday and hope for a much better season next year. Thanks everybody!!!

Thanks for your contributions, Al!
You do a great job with this blog, I have enjoyed reading your posts and those of the many regulars here.

Pretty amazing event to me, I thought that McPhail would stay until the bitter end, i.e., since the extended Hendry to 2008, I presumed that's when the housecleaning would take place with McPhail.

In any event, if they keep Hendry, which seems likely given their remarks, then the pressure is on for him to win in 2007 (not world series or nothing, but he has to make the playoffs) so that likely means a higher budget.  If they cut back on his budget then he might as well quit as he's not the type to do well in market value transactions.  So, if Hendry stays then he's going to go veteran heavy and I think the prospects of Murton being traded will inrease.

Finally, at least McPhail took responsibility in his comments and didn't try to generate sympathy or stump for a job interview by being sad that Trib. higher ups did not look to his Twins record.  That is to say, he wasn't a weasel like Dusty (at least in this particular moment).  Geeze, when the concrete was falling in Wrigley, and berating a reporter in his office, McPhail was sounding very much like a weasel, lol...In any event, he didn't get the job done and resigned, he didn't publicly seek sympathy or blame others.  Dusty has already shown that he doesn't have that much class...I am glad that both are gone.  Hendry should do us all a favor and resign...the entire 2007 season is going to be a microscope on Hendry.  If he thought it was a pressure cooker already, the pressure was just turned up to 11...

I'm hoping he responds well as I just want the Cubs to win.

Al, let me add to everyone's kudos here. I know you spend countless hours making this site such a success. I have really enjoyed it, even though the team has been a total downer. Last offseason was a lot of fun so I am looking forward to this offseason. It has gotten off to an interesting start.

Thanks again...
... to ALL of you for your kind words. I try every day to bring you what goes on at the ballpark, criticize when warranted, but also not snark for the sake of snarking. It's just not me.

Stick around, everyone -- there will be LOTS to discuss this offseason, beginning tomorrow with the expected announcement about Dusty Baker's departure.

Also thanks
I have read this blog and the previous one, have seldom posted, but enjoyed both the information and the company of such excellent Cub fans.  Some of the  angrier and more negative posters were wearisome, but all of us had a rough year, and their input was at least interesting.
I am especially grateful for the quality of your writing, Al, it is not often on blogs that people write competently, and you write very well indeed.  Keep it up. Thanks again.

I won't post anymore about...
Dusty/Hendry/McPhail...I made myself weary with it...it's over...hopefully Hendry responds to the pressure and field a team talented enough for the playoffs in 2007...Once in the playoffs then luck can prevail...

It may not be ALL...
MacPhail's fault, but he's the boss and it was his responsibility to make sure everything was running smoothly and successfully.  That didn't happen in the time he was here.

I didn't like him.  I felt like he did nothing, but I bet he will be OK at his next job.

I think this will be a very interesting offseason.

Cubbie Blue will always sPaRkLe in my eyes, but please stop losing. PLEASE!

Dan Evans was at the game today...
I believe I saw Dan Evans on the Cubs broadcast of their game today.  I don't know if it means anything, in fact I doubt it does.

I was not a big fan of McPhail.  Previously he struck me as a pretentious snob.  Today though at his press conference I gained a new respect for the  man.

Too bad for McPhail and the Cubs that things didn't work out.  Best wishes to him.

I can't think of anything to add about BCB that hasn't been said by others.  Keep up the great work.  It will help us all get throught the off season.  We'll be back next year.  It was great to get to meet you in person and to enjoy a win from the bleachers.

Thanks Al...
I have always enjoyed your musings on everyones favorite team! I just hope that some day we will all be able to thank you (and congratulate each other) after an exciting october, rather than a dismal september.

I can't wait to see what this off-season brings; all of those crazy speculations coming out of mlbtraderumors.com, the addition of some new players, and the new manager.

06 has ended and 07 could be 'next year' (not really, I just like the taste of the cubby cool-aide!)

I can't believe McPhail.....
resigned. I'm happy....and after Dusty gets canned tomorrow I'll be real happy. I didn't like McPhail's baseball philosophy but after getting reamed badly in the press he did the stand-up thing.....he deserves some credit for that.

Glad to see him go.  However, what I find most refreshing is that he actually admitted he didn't get the job done.

Kudos on accepting responsibility, Mr. MacPhail.  And don't let the door hit you in the (expletive deleted) on the way out!

Time for some kind words.....
OK, now that I have laced the BCB airwaves with my end-of-a-horrible-season venom concerning MacFail/Hendry/Dusty, (see above comments), let me say a few kind words to Al and the rest of the BCB fans:

Regardless of the nonsense that goes on in Tribune Tower and the Wrigley Field Front Office, I remain, now and forever, a loyal and hopeful Cubs Fan, and I want to thank my fellow bloggers at BCB for helping me in my daily battle with this addiction that we all know as being die-hard Cubs fans.  Cubs Fans are truly the most amazing, resiliant, and loyal group of people that God ever Created, and regardless of the results on the field, I am proud to be part of Cubs Nation.  Thank you, Al, for making my spring and summer a bit brighter with your work, and thanks to the entire BCB gang.  Let's look forward to a productive offseason geared toward winning in '07, and I look forward to discussing and debating it all with you this winter.

Finally, one request: I urge all Cubs fans to please do not purchase tickets in February unless management has earned our business with a productive offseason.  Hopefully they will, and we can all purchase tickets for 2007 with hope.

Dusty--no questions or one on ones?
Interesting how DB smiled upon entering the interview room, then made his nice statement but took no questions...were reporters allowed to follow him into locker room afterward to try to get more?

Typical as with pols this is a way to dodge controversy...but with athletes they can't really escape once go into locker room (unless off limits somehow today) news hounds can corner them or at least try to get one on ones.

I feel like Baker owes us a little more but maybe he's protecting himself against himself by deciding to limit his comments to a general statement. Any sour grapes will make him less appealing to future employers, and as I posted yesterday, what's he got to complain about? 4 years at nice salary and will find something, somewhere, due to his status and general class.

Hendry was pretty evasive also about what he's looking for, etc., and no one mentioned or threw out Girardi's name just to get his reaction. I wanted to know is he one of the people you'd be interested in, or is he not a candidate (can imagine Hendry would reply, he's still an employee of the Fla. Marlins--true until tomorrow).

The evil Sharon P. of Cub PR staff shut off questions for Baker and eventually Hendry before anything heated, who told her to be such a guardian at the gates?? I had a few dealings with her in past and she is not pleasant. Maybe their housecleaning should include Ms. Pannazzo.
I've heard other writers also lament how she treats them. Get a grip, lady, just get out of the way.

by writerinwrigley on Oct 2, 2006 1:11 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

About Girardi...
... yes, as long as he is employed by the Marlins, Hendry CANNOT say anything about him -- because if he does, the Cubs can get fined for tampering. I'm sure you can see why he wouldn't want that.

Baker may have more to say after the dust settles, but I remind you that four years later, Don Baylor has never publicly stated how he felt when he was fired. And Baker hasn't been fired, his contract wasn't renewed.

by Al on Oct 2, 2006 1:39 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Um Al,
"fired" or "contract not renewed"....both equal the same result.

by Peoria Matt on Oct 3, 2006 7:07 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Uh, no
from a financial standpoint, there is a world of differnce.

Take Joe Girardi, for instance.  He was fired and the word is that the Marlins will have to pay him the last two years of his contract which amounts to almost $3 Million.  Most contracts include a buyout of some sort.

Not renewing Baker, since he is at the end of his contract, will cost the Cubs zippo.

by jazzman56 on Oct 3, 2006 11:54 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Contracted employees
shouldn't expect to be retained beyond their contractual terms...that's why you sign a contract.  he knew the terms when he signed the contract, and a renewal would be just that:  renewing the contract for a period.

Much different than being fired mid-contract, in my opinion.
