Wow, 50...
Just kidding...Hope you are having a great one. I am only 4 years behind you, and it doesn't seem like that long ago that I thought 30 sounded old. Now 60 doesn't sound that old....

It's okay
Just don't let your wife see this comment!

The other thing Al can say is that he's 29 with 21 years experience....  That's the route I'll go once I get closer to 29 (Ugh! only two more years!).

30
I turned 30 this last summer...

I was filling in some online survey recently, and it broke the age groups down by:
25-30, 31-40, etc.

Made me feel good to be in the same group as the 25 year olds (I guess)

As an extra whammy, the competitioin in the 30+ category in races (10K, 1/2 marathons etc) is tougher... oh well

Happy Birthday Al!

Happy Birthday, Al
Here is a snippet from your horoscope (via cafeastrology)

The Sun trine Moon in your Solar Return chart is a fortunate aspect. It suggests that domestic and career needs don't compete with one another this year. Your inner needs tend to be mirrored by external events, and vice versa. This aspect is very powerful and rewarding. It suggests that you will be on top of your game this year for the most part, even given some of the problems outlined below, and positive connections with others can be made. A comfortable level of personal popularity helps to keep conflict to a minimum. With the ability to handle your emotions successfully, there will be less stress on both your mind and body. Your self-confidence and positive attitude will reward you.

Around the time of your birthday, Mars trines Uranus, and this opens up many new possibilities to you. Bursts of creativity and energy that help you to further your goals, as well as the ability to spot an opportunity when you see one, make it easier than usual to break free from habits that have previously held you back from going after what you want in life. Flexibility is the key to success this year!

Flexibility?  Is that like batting JJ in the 5 hole vs LHP?

Chicks dig the long ball

30?
So if Fifty is the new 30, what is 30?

Reason I ask...I turn 30 today.  20 years exactly to the date. So if 50 is the new 30, is 30 the new 17?  Does that even make sense?  Did I leave the iron on?

by Spoonerstreet on Nov 9, 2006 9:06 AM CST   0 recs

Well, let's see.
We've had a suggestion that 30 is the new 20, or that 30 is the new 17.

I'm thinking I'd go with 20 if I were you. Or maybe 21, that way you could still drink.

by Al on Nov 9, 2006 9:22 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

Good point
It's like an SAT question:

50 is to 30 as 30 is to:
A) 17
B) 20
C) 21
D) The difference between W and L in 2006
E) The number of new players we need on the roster

I'm also turning 30 next year and would like to know what my new age will be.  Thanks for the great cubbies site and Happy Birthday.

by grover on Nov 9, 2006 9:56 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

If 30 is the new 17...
then what about me?  I'm a newborn or what?  Maybe it's 3.  I loved being 3.

by sparkles721 on Nov 9, 2006 10:06 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

If 50 is the new 30
30 is 3/5 of 50. Using that same ratio we find that 30 is the new 18. Of course applying that to me 23 is the new 13.

Yes I put too much thought into this.

::Hangs head in shame::

oh yeah, Happy Birthday Al.

It's pretty cool, actually.
You get deals on travel, car insurance, etc., and--trying to stay away from politics--become a member of the largest lobbying group in the nation!

And of course, there is the magazine formerly known as "Modern Maturity" ... ugh.  They renamed the thing--thank goodness--to better appeal to the Boomers.

Well, they have one cleverly called
"AARP The Magazine," but I'm not sure if that is what MM was renamed.

There's a tabloid as well.
It's called AARP Bulletin; it comes monthly.  The magazine mentioned above is exactly that, a nice glossy.  That said, I do feel some mild discomfort at finding AARP stuff in the mail ... of course, I still remember the saying, "don't trust anyone over thirty."  Cringes.

Perhaps it's time to pursue some baseball-oriented free-lance writing ... Al?

Happy birthday
Al.

Just think, you're only two years older than Julio Franco, and he'll be suiting up for another season in the big leagues next year.

I turned 35 earlier this year, and that feels pretty old. I still can't quite fathom that I'll be 50 in less than 15 years. When I think back 15 years, 1991 doesn't seem too long ago. And I assume the next 15 will go by quicker than the last 15. Is that a valid assumption?

by danimal15 on Nov 9, 2006 12:21 PM CST   0 recs

I don't believe you
I think Julio Franco is actually older than Al.  So as long as Franco is playing (well into the next century by my primitive calculations), there will always be a player older than you in the big leagues Al.

by Littlerock Rynofan on Nov 9, 2006 3:53 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

LOL
Franco is a year and a half younger than me, but as long as he's playing, at least there's someone CLOSE to my age still active.

by Al on Nov 9, 2006 3:59 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

At age 35
I'm starting to appreciate that there still are baseball and football players older than me, and don't relish the day when I'm older than all of them, though no doubt it's coming. I still remember well when I first became as old as some of the players. Now I'm older than nearly all of them. It goes by fast, this period of life.

The oldest baseball player now is Franco, who is the last active player born in the 1950s. Gee, I remember that when Sandberg first came up, I thought he seemed so young because he'd been born in 1959.

by danimal15 on Nov 9, 2006 4:42 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Nope and Nope
Julio Franco is both older than El Duque and older than his listed age.  And nothing you say will convince me otherwise.

by Jesse Guam on Nov 9, 2006 4:42 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Franco...
... when he first came to the majors, he claimed a birth date of 1961. That was later revised to 1958. I think that's accurate -- if it was much earlier than that, he'd have been 26 or 27 as a rookie, which is unlikely, since he was a highly touted prospect.

by Al on Nov 9, 2006 4:48 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Then
How do you explain the fact that Julio Franco's rookie card was actually first discovered among the ruins of Pompeii?

Franco
Whatever his age, it's worth noting that Franco stole 6 bases last year, his highest number in that category since 1997. Of course, he was speedier a few years back, stealing 32 bases for the 1983 Indians, when he was teammates with Manny Trillo, Gorman Thomas, Toby Harah, Andre Thornton, Jim Essian, Rick Sutcliffe and Bert Blyleven, among others.

He's also probably the only active player left to have been teammates with the legendary Karl Pagel, who the Cubs drafted in round one of the 1976 draft. (They had two picks in the first round that year, choosing Herman Segelke with the other one. I hope they fired the scouts who recommended those two!)

by danimal15 on Nov 9, 2006 4:50 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Wow.
Herman Segelke. There's a name I never thought would appear on this website.

Segelke actually got into three games for the 1982 Cubs. Can't say I remember any of them.

by Al on Nov 9, 2006 4:52 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Segelke
He wasn't too memorable. Three games, 4 innings were his major league totals, all in 1982. I don't remember him, either. I do remember some of the other Cub scrubs of that season, however. Bobby Molinaro and Ty Waller come to mind.

by danimal15 on Nov 9, 2006 4:55 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

1976 draft
Hindsight is always 20-20, of course, but players drafted after Herman Segelke in the 1976 draft included:

Mike Scott
Alan Trammell
Rickey Henderson
Leon Durham
Jack Morris
Ozzie Smith
Wade Boggs
Willie McGee

You've got to wonder what the Cubs saw in Segelke that they didn't see in any of these others. Of course, a lot of teams overlook talent in every draft. Rickey Henderson was the 96th pick in this one. And Floyd Bannister -who if I recall correctly had one or two great years but otherwise was pretty average, was the number one pick.

by danimal15 on Nov 9, 2006 8:43 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Segelke?
And then he got TRADED to the Giants for," Alan Hargesheimer".

Geez the Cubs of the 70's were pretty
