Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Expect the unexpected

I've been attending MLB games since....well....since Andre Rogers was the Cubs SS and Bob Buhl was one of our starters. I've seen hundreds and hundreds of games, in a multitude of parks.....but until today, I've never seen a 9-inning no hitter in person.
Oh, of course, it's spring training.....and the A's did manage a 10th inning hit...but those of you on WGN just had to have been on the edge of your seat? What a marvelous exhibition of young pitching! And, to my eyes, Sean Marshall (his line is in another diary) wasn't quite as sharp as he was back on Tuesday's start against the Brew Crew! But still...he was getting the A's out on that nasty curve...his fast ball, up in the strike zone....not really hitttable...that led to four BB's. Angel Guzman entered in the 5th...and was even better...of course, the no hitter continued, as Guzman's off speed pitch --
slider, I guess (Len and Bren probably told you more) was wicked! A 9-inning perfecto! Sure would have been nice to have seen that game-winner in the 9th -- bases loaded, but no luck there. (via 2 intentional walks, after a single) And while this transpired, I kept the cell lines busy to Al in Surprise...and he wished he was in Mesa, watching this gem!
Truly, I've never been so excited at a meaningless game. Strangely enough...many in the crowd didn't quite 'get it.' Probably, the change of pitchers threw many (and, at times a barely viewable scoreboard due to the glaring sun) and I heard some mumbling of..."nothing's happening!"
I turned back and said....this is the 8th inning of a no-hitter!!!! He said...."Oh, yeah...wow."
Well, the crowd DID get it by the 9th.....and hung on every pitch by David Aardsma!
That 10th inning hit by Dan Johnson deflated the crowd a bit, but the 10th inning rally by the kids -- Casey Kopiskie's single, followed by Brandon Sing's game winning double....A thrilling end to a memorable Cactus League affair. It's an old saying -- you never know when you are going to see something at a ball park you've NEVER seen before. Today was the day for me.

Other highlights -- I hope you saw the intoduction of Buck O'Neil and ex Cub George Altman before the game -- as Rodeway Express sponsored a tribute to Negro League baseball. There was a private exhibition in the lot prior to the game -- Buck was there, as was George -- Jim Hendry held a short Q & A (I say private because you couldn't cross into the 'party' area, where the food and drink was, but the stage area was open to all to observe from behind the 'rope line.') And -- Ronnie W. (oops, sorry Al, but ya gotta report the facts) was also a part of the festivities. He did the usual, and....metaphysically, I was 16 again, in the LF bleachers...and there was this strange guy going..."Banks...woo!" Beckert, "Woo!" Who knew?

Low lights? The White Sox fan, (he was wearing a Sox cap) next to me at the sink, (in the facilities) telling his friend...." it was kind of boring."
Oh, for the love of......stay in Tucson if THAT'S your only observation!

And for GM, as we are fair and balanced here -- A's pitching struck out 10 Cubs...8 for the A's Rich Harden, who is ready to tackle the AL West.
Good luck to the A's -- that's a nice-looking team.

This was truly the best meaningless game
I have ever watched. During the commercial breaks I read Wrigleyworld - a fun read that takes me back to when I lived on Kenmore. Now I can re-live the days and nights I couldn't remember thanks to my friend Bud and peppermint schnapps (don't try it!). After chapter 6, I'm really glad I got tickets for day games at Wrigley. The only sour note in the game IMO was Jacque (SP?) Jones hacking away while Brenley fawned about how Jones and Pierre are teaching the boys the fundementals of just advancing the runner. Arrgh! It felt like last year all over again. Other than that, though, priceless! I hope we see more of Marshall and Guzman. Please tell me Pagan will be around, too. Man, I love spring!

I was there, too, SJM.
It was a great game!  If it makes you feel any better about the clueless Sox fan, the guy in front of me (of indeterminate fandom) kept saying, "This is a really boring game, why aren't there any hits?"  He said this for the first time just as I was thinking--"Great, the true die hard fans are the ones who are here--no Wrigley-scene sucking baseball idiots."  Of course, he then wondered aloud how no team could be smart enough this year to sign Sammy Sosa, and how "if he was here, there would be some balls flying out of the park!"  Egads.

Anyway, today was my first-ever spring training game to attend in person and I could not have been more delighted to see the young Cubs pitchers do such a splendid job!  Sean Marshall has the look of what could be a very special pitcher.  The only down note was that too many of our players swung at pitches outside the strike zone . . . it seems too close to opening day for that.

I'm envious SD Jazz Man
That's a great post SD Jazz Man. I really enjoyted reading it. There is a reason we fans go to all these games. It's because every now and then you stumble upon a game like you did today. Congrats. That had to be fantastic!

I am jealous. I have only seen a couple of 1 hitters through all the years. A 9 inning no-no is a no hitter in  my book Smooth Jazz.

SD, I'm curious, after watching both Marshall and Guzman today who would you choose for the fifth starter slot?

my pick
I just got home last night from a six game tour of the Cubs and like has ben posted by Al (who I never got to meet) we got wet, cold and hot all in the same week. I am impressed with Marshall and being left handed never hurts. Guzman is not quite at his level with the games this spring as a gauge. My other observance I would like to share with all is concerning Pierre. When he is on base there is an excitement. The pitchers respect his ability to steal and throw to 1st often; when he steals, goes 2nd to home the heighted anxiety of the opponent is easily seen. He will make great things happen for us. And what can I say about Rameriz? Murton (outside of a ball he should have caught Friday night)? Lee (although I saw him only once)? We could have a pretty good offensive team. Pie is so fast it's fun to watch him run. As many of other readers have posted, it's down to pitching but I'm excited after seeing what we have in the batting order. Al, will try one more time to find you opening day.

Sorry...
... that we didn't make connections. Wish you'd have emailed me, I would have made arrangements, as I did with the Jazz Man.

Just got home from the desert
(a day late, don't ask......)
CCD, I'd take a chance with Marshall, mainly because he's a lefty. One more quality start could lead to that choice. However, we HAVE been waiting for Guzman....and he looked OK. If the braintrust decided to promote Guzman, I'd be OK with that. However, I have a feeling about Marshall, after 2 viewings. Just a gut feeling, nothing else....but his poise sure was impressive. And, thanks for the props, guys -- it was a blast communicating w/Al back & forth....
