Maddux to Brewers?

That's what cnnsi's Truth and Rumors has posted today - along with a projected kerry Wood minor league rehab assignment.

Apparently greg's brother Mike, is already a coach for the crew. Not many more details other than that, which smells of pure, wild speculation designed to fill space and create internet chatter at blogs.

Oh wait...doh!

ANYONE heard anything about this before today?

That is the dumbest rumor I've ever heard
if Maddus was so hot to be on the seam team with Mike, why wouldn't he have just gone to the Phillies back when he was a pitcher over there? And who on earth wants to be coached by their big brother? And what would we possibly get from the Brewers that would be worth Madux? Freakin' Ben Sheets?

Sorry--not directed at you---but that is the dumbest rumor I've ever heard.

Oh the typos
in that post. LOL. Hard to see what I was typing with all the steam coming out of my ears. That's why I don't go to that site anymore, beacuse you're right, it's totally designed to create controversy so that people will link to it and they can sell more advertising space. And I just walked right into it.

Sorry Julie, but...
...if it were a straight-up trade, I'd take Sheets for Maddux!!!

Not me
too injury-prone.

Let's just say I'm not worried
and I worry  about nearly everything involving
Maddux. However for NEXT year there are some
interesting possibilities because Mike will also be
a "free agent" and while it is nice that Greg and Mike
are VERY close, it is even nicer that Mike might be the
best pitching coach in the majors. I would start
by offering both of them lifetime memborships
in all good Chicago area golf courses and work
from there

by jessica on Apr 14, 2006 12:23 PM CDT reply actions

Now THAT
is a good idea---I wouldn't mind seeing Mike Maddux as our pitching coach.

Talk about being taken out of context!!!
I went and read the "truth and rumors" column on cnn/si....and it's referring to a Jay Mariotti column in the Sun-Times where he speculates on what will happen NEXT year.  Essentially, he says that if the Cubs DON'T resign him, there's "talk" that Maddux could go to Milwaukee next year.  That's it.  Nothing more.

Go here to read the whole article:  http://www.suntimes.com/output/mariotti/cst-spt-jay13.html

That makes a lot more sense
Still not all that likely but depending on the
Cubs season not impossible.

Yeah
because we have so many starters, he'd free up some room in the rotation.

;)

No, he can be a player/pitching coach
It would make the visits to the mound (on days he's pitching) more interesting.

Although it might be difficult for him to call the bullpen. Might have to have a cellphone out on the mound to talk to the pen.

Hoping to be
not sure yet. But I have my little extra-schedule all ready to go.

Sadly, my office is full of pagans, they've been out there dancing around a chicken and worshipping the sun all day. So no early dismissal for me today.

Rumor is Nonsense - Sheets is WAY better
Rumor is crap, but don't try to tell me Maddux is better than Sheets.  That's as much nonsense as the rumor itself.

by ontheuptick on Apr 14, 2006 1:09 PM CDT reply actions

I think what Julie was saying
is that Sheets is injury-prone (we're all stocked up there) while Maddux doesn't seem to have that problem.

You might say that
Now in his 20th full season Maddux has been on the DL
exactly once , for two weeks in the late 90s with sore
lower back. Never had an arm injury of any kind.
FYI I still feel sorry for Tom Glavine who had NEVER been on
the DL until 2004 when a taxi he was riding in got into
a bad accident knocking out two of his teeth and putting
on the DL for the first time.

You don't think . . .
that those Braves pitchers staying SOOO healthy for SOOO long had anything to do with Bobby Cox/Leo Mazzone knowing how to work arms up, keep them healthy, and not overtax them, do you?

Not really
I think Maddux and Glavine anyway were special cases
They just know themselves so well and have perfected
a style of pitching that mimimizes any potential injury
Remember Hampton is out for the year and they have
had other injuries. I do happen to believe Mazzone is
a genius but don't think it made a difference to
Maddux & Glavine's longevity

by jessica on Apr 14, 2006 2:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed
And don't forget that John Smoltz has had some arm trouble too.

by LT on Apr 14, 2006 2:42 PM CDT up reply actions

But in general
you don't see Mazzone's pitchers breaking down like you do on some other teams, at least not over and over with the same problems. It will be interesting to see what he can do this year, if he can build the same kind of pitching dynasty or if he just got lucky in Atlanta with a once-in-a-lifetime staff.

Mazzone was brilliant at rehab jobs
Fixing up Millwood , Byrd etc but for the most
part the Braves didn't have  a lot fireball pitchers
like Wood & Prior. I don't think it is Mazzone's fault
that Hampton had injuries but pitchers that throw
in the mid 90s plus are just prone to more injury.
The staff is a total mess without him so far but
that is partly because economics forced them to
part with a lot of good pitchers in the last few years.
( THANK YOU TIME WARNER FOR CUTTING THE BRAVES
PAYROLL AND RETURNING MAD DOG).

This of course leads to the inevitable Maddux anecdote. He was of course very close to Mazzone and at one point in the mid 90s when he was in one of  his ridiculous winning streaks with an era under 2 he complained to Mazzone that he never came out to talk to him on the mound anymore. Mazzone said there was nothing to talk about and Maddux responded that he got bored out there with no one but the catcher to talk to and asked Mazzone to just come out in the 6th or 7th inning to break  up the monotony. So they worked out a signal and Mazzone would go out just pretty much to say hi or whatever.
