Do-It-Yourself Game Post

I can't think of anything to say about the Cubs' loss to the Tigers this afternoon.

So YOU choose how you want this post to read.

This afternoon at Wrigley Field, took the field and against the visiting . The final score was . Mark Prior, just back off the disabled list, to the Tigers, who, by hitting home runs, tied the Cubs' club record for . It started lightly at game time, which made the 39,938 in attendance . After the game, Prior said at his press conference live on WGN radio, that his performance . The Cubs have now lost games in a row, the first time they've gone winless in an entire homestand of six games or more since . Manager Dusty Baker, when asked how he could change his team's fortunes in the upcoming road trip, said: . Finally, today the Cubs signed , who will be sent to to begin professional play.
What more can any of us say? Yes, I do have a few things to say, so here's MY "do-it-yourself" post, which I'll keep mercifully brief:

Mike reminded me that some of the teams of the mid-1970's were this bad and we all used to sit out there and laugh at them. But, as I reminded him, those teams would WIN games like today's every once in a while. This team seems incapable of doing anything like that. They get behind by a couple of runs and it's like climbing the twin peaks of Mt. Kilimanjaro with the tour guide with double vision. (That's a Monty Python joke, for those of you not familiar with the sketch. Yes, I know Mt. Kilimanjaro doesn't have two peaks.)

It is all we can do to laugh. Back in 2003, I had to remind the then 8-year-old Mark, on the cusp of what we thought was going to be a NL pennant, that things weren't always like this. In fact, most of my life, things with the Cubs have been like they are NOW.

This team should be blown up and the parts scattered. The problem is -- what parts are even saleable right now? Jim Hendry, on whose head I squarely lay the blame for this disaster, is going to have a tough time trading just about anyone from the current roster, because of poor performance. Maybe the performance of players like Juan Pierre will turn around enough to give them some trade value in the next five weeks.

I still love baseball and going to the park to share it with my friends, and Mark likes hanging down by the wall trying to get baseballs (none today).

But man, it's not easy these days. Not easy.

Dude! I just like saying Dude!
The saddest part of this slumping team is that they cannot afford to sell off even the valuable pieces.

To replace Juan Pierre in the organization, you need 2 pitching prospects.  I'd take 1 really good one.  Or even an excellent OF prospect and a mediocre pitcher.  We're going to get an AA pitcher and have to eat some salary.

Walker would get full value, but the only way I personally want to see him traded is if we also trade Neifi! and Womack so that we have to play Theriot.  Bynum will get some value.  Murton will be valuable, but that's exactly why I don't want to trade him.

Of the veterans if I were God of the Cubs, I would keep:
Ramirez, Lee, Walker, Zambrano, Eyre, Howry, Dempster, Williamson, Prior, Barrett
Of the rookies I'd keep:
Cedeno, Marshall, Marmol, Ardsma, (I'll sell Murton if the price is right), Ohman, Guzman

If Maddux wants a trade, I would go talk to the other GMs.  If he wants to stay, I thank him.
Wood has no value, yet.  I'd trade 1 or 2 of the young pitchers or even a vet if we get REAL prospects in return and several of them.

You can have the rest of the team for some AAA players and the right for somebody else to watch them stink.

I am horrified to admit that I watched half of the Mark Prior game and no others since Wednesday.

by Woodstock on Jun 18, 2006 6:20 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I generally agree but
Walker might as well pack his bag. He hates Hendry
He is never staying and you might actually get something
for him. Pierre I am not sure what you would get for him
probably not enough to destroy Pie by bringing him up
too early.

Just my luck that "backloaded" my game so I will
be seeing roughly 18 of the Cubs first 25 games after
the AS break. Fun in the sun I guess. I keep THINKING
they can't get worse. However I do have a 3-0 record
this season so I am hoping for  a "fresh" start
after AS break.
Like Al & Mike I can easily remember many seasons of the
Cubs being this bad but perhaps because of lower
expectations ( and ticket prices) it did not hurt
as much

Well Al
if you can't help the Sox I guess you can generate some entertainment. Very nice post.

BTW - Cleveland hits better than the Tigers. But I don't think I really care if you beat them or not. Good luck.

It'll only get worse when Lee gets back
Last year there were plenty of awful days with the whole team healthy. Lee will not be the same as last year, he wasn't at the beginning of the season either. Then who will we blame? Angel Pagan?

by CubFaninNY on Jun 18, 2006 6:31 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes, and even with Lee...
there is no guaranty that he will perform well this year.  Wrist injuries are very serious, they are difficult to repair surgically and for hitters they do end their careers.  All I am saying is Lee may not look anything like the hitter he was before the injury, maybe not until really late this season or next season...and for some they never get it back.  The wrist injury for a hitter is like that Labrum injury for a pitcher...

Brutal, just brutal
The only thing that kept me watching through the later innings was the anticipation of what Jeremy Piven would say to get him permanently banned from a Cubs broadcast.

Fortunately, to keep things moderately bearable Bob & Len were kind enough not to mention the game on the field whatsoever for two innings, thanks guys.

And you know what
Cleveland, Twins and White Sox yet to play in the interleague, good luck if the Cubs win 2 out of 9. The Cubs are a embarrassment especially with the payroll they have. What a waste, I agree Al Hendry really needs to be held accountable. Still Dusty is not free of blame, To do it right both would go, along with the staff, But it will snow first in July. I am a Browns fan, so hurry up end of July for camp.

I expect...
to somehow manage to play inspired ball against the Sox.  As I believe Al has said, in the Crosstown games it doesn't really matter what the records are at that point.

by DrCrawdad on Jun 18, 2006 7:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't expect much fight...
against the Sox but you never know, Maybe the M&M will pitch brilliantly along with Z?  That's the only hope...

The Cubs management needs to hold someone frickin' accountable for the idea that Prior was ready to pitch today.  I mean this is the major leagues and that was total horsecrap.

Okay, if no one can be held accountable then send Prior down and let him pitch another month at AAA or wherever, the guy is light years from the big leagues now...

I expect that for most of the Cubs' roster this was a huge frickin' morale crusher as now Prior, the potential savior is I don't know what...useless?  Wood and Prior are KO'd and I think the morale of this team is in the same state.

The entire season was bet on Wood and Prior, it's like looking down on the floor at the track and seeing all of the losers' tickets being swept away...

This is very bad and it could very well get much worse in terms of level of play and I hope it gets so rotten stinking bad that the Cubs or the Tribune are forced to turn this dead horse in mid-stream and laucnh the current regime...that's the only thing the rest of this season is good for, well, that and seeing if the M&Ms are for real that's very improtant, too.

by DudeVf1 on Jun 18, 2006 7:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

agree
hope it gets worse, and worse, to the point of just horrible. Like to see Marshall and Marmol perform, other than that really have no concern. GUT THIS FRANCHISE PLEASE

Piven...
... sang "Take Me Out To The Ball Game", and did it badly, and yelled out "Bitch!" during it. One of the worst renditions ever.

I'm not a fan of his, in case you couldn't tell.

by Al on Jun 18, 2006 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The use of bitch
while you and others may find Piven's choice of phrase in appropriate, you should realize that he was quoting the line that's made him famous.

His role in Entourage has raised him to a new level of fame.  His best known line from the show is, "Let's hug it out, bitch."  And that's what he said before singing, except he used the plural.

I thought it was unnecessary, but as a fan of the show, found it pretty amusing.  Kids across the stadium hear far worse from their neighbors in the stands.

All will be fixed in 2006

Cardenal
This guy was worth the price of admission alone. I loved his 'run till you score or are called out attitude'. I remember one time after a long argument between the opposing manager and the umpires Cardenal who had been on second went over and took his lead off of third and almost got away with it. The guy always was looking for a edge on a very bad team.

Someone has a sense of irony....
The poll question on the Cubs official website today asks if the Cubs can still win 90 games this year. 31% actually said yes. Those 31% have not been watching many Cubs games this year.....

Please start the fire sale immediately!

by perseman on Jun 18, 2006 7:26 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Oh yeah 90 wins? No problema...
that's only playing .681 ball from here on out.  Recall that part of the Lee Elia tirade when he talks about how once they "get in that groove" then "it will flow--and it will flow", well they better find one miraculous groove for 90 wins.  Geeze, I can't believe that they have that kind of crap on the Cubs site?  Doesn't anyone think about stuff like that before they make it public?  Why not just ask whether the Cubs will go undefeated the rest of the way, it's just as realistic of a question?

Jeremy Piven was my personal highlight of the cubs' season so far.  Maybe he could switch jobs with Dick Pole as cubs bench coach, I have no doubt that he could motive the 25 people who put on cubs uniforms and pretend to major league baseball.

P.S.  I'll donate money to the cause if we have to pool together to buy out his contract!

New poster
Hi, everyone! I am a long time zealous Cub fan but a new poster here in this forum. I grew up in Indiana but have lived in the Detroit metro area since 1982. Still follow my beloved Cubs even from Michigan.

WOW, what can be said about this sad team that hasn't already been said? Thank goodness I have other things going on in my life or this would be the year for me to start hitting the bottle!

Cubs will NEVER win with this present team! They will never win (enough) when DLee returns to the lineup (based on the lousy roster surrounding him)!  this team will never win (it all) even when Wood and Prior return to their old form!

Face it folks, when a team is in last place in every offensive catagory, that team will never win anything and they WILL BE BAD for years to come.  It would be better for the Cubs to "hibernate" for the season right now, play the rookies (to see what we have) and formulate a long-term strategy to rebuild this organization into the consistent juggernaut it should be.

Tigers vs. Cubs
Just a little perspective form Detroit on the series.

Tiger radio announcers were commenting about how the Cubs seemed to be aggressive at the plate at times (you think so) and that the player the feared the most was none other than Henry Blanco! During Saturday's game when he was up late in the game, the Tiger announcers were doing just about everything but saying a few "Hail Marys" hoping that the Tiger pitchers could just "contain" Blanco in his next at-bat!  They did...and a sigh of relief was heard across the Tiger's radio network!

No fear of Ramirez or Nevin or anyone else, just Henry!

Sure we suck BUT...
1. The Cubs are 3-7 over their last 10 games but:

Philadelphia is 2-8;
Cincinatti is 2-8;
Cleveland is 2-8;
Atlanta is 1-9;
Arizona is 1-9;

2. The Cubs are NOT in last place but:

the Pirates are,
Tampa Bay is,
Pittsburgh is,
Atlanta is,
KC is,
San Fran is,
LA (Angels) are.

Sure we suck but other teams suck MORE.

Al, you are a wicked GENIUS for that one ..
Thanks for the DIRELY needed laugh.

I'm a diehard Cubs fan, but hope died hard here .. and I'm about done mourning it.

I will still go to Atlanta in September .. but for ONE GAME. I want to be able to justify to myself all of the childish abandon in buying Cubs jerseys, ball caps, festooning my car with Cub bumper stickers and being STILL in possession of not only the Ferguson Jenkins mitt that turned me into a Cubs fan in 1969 as well as a "W" pennant I've yet to fly ONCE in a ball park upon watching a Cubs victory.

My jersey says "FAN SINCE 69" .. I'm celebrating my own insanity and loving every minute of it. It hurts too much to memorialize a single player of this franchise that has torn my heart out for years. So I made my loyalty the star.

Any psychologists here? Boy, you could really dig something out of that for therapy, couldn't ya ..

Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!

Streaking Cubs gain ground in Fecal League play...
Fecal League Standings

Kansas City.... 18 49 .269
Pittsburgh....... 26 43 .377 (7)
Chicago.......... 26 41 .388 (8)
Tampa Bay......29 40 .420 (10)
Florida............ 28 37 .431 (11)
Atlanta............ 30 39 .435 (11)*

*Does not include the 6/18 Atlanta v. Boston results

Following today's loss, Cub strategurist  Dusty Half-Baked met with Tribco lackeys to discuss the team's playoff drive.

"Dudes, we're in a groove now, misfiring on all cylinders. We closed the gap on KC and remain tied with the Pirates in the win column. We feel good opening a gap over Tampa Bay and Florida, but we're playing with a look over our shoulder at the surprising and surging Braves who are on an incredible run. I don't think they can sustain their play much longer though.

We're happy right now, you know we had to battle back from a terrible opening series this year and really our play for the first three weeks. Once we took Lee out of the line-up and Maddux got over his early season histrionics, we got into a really good grove. Our hitters are over being patient and swinging at anything---being aggressive don't you know---we finally put together an outfield that is slow and can't throw and Walker is over his early season tom-foolery.

We can still make a run at KC and I really think we'll catch Pittsburgh this week to take over the wildcard spot. With Woods and Prior peaking, dudes, we're going to be where we need to be come playoff time. The only cloud we have now is Z's pitching, but Larry and I feel two or three 150 or 175 pitch games will get him straightened out."

"I was not in optimum condition to manage ," Dusty said. "I regret that lapse in judgment."

So why not make something good out of this season...

It's not too late to make a run for being worst team ever.  Kansas City sure seems to have this season locked up, but if we make a run for it and keep losing every 8/10 games, maybe we can have a 110 loss season and be known as the terrible team we are.

Hell, what else is there we have a chance of doing?

I read Al's recap and I agree that all we can do is laugh.  I went to the game on Sunday with my oldest son (19 years old).  I bought him a scorecard because he wanted to score the game, something I taught him to do many years ago to keep him interested in the action on the field.  We shared a bag a peanuts and had a hot dog.  He bought himself a "frosty malt" and me an ice cream since it was Father's Day.   He told me that he still thinks our seats (in the upper deck behind home plate) are great because you can see the whole park from where we sit.  He plans on taking his girlfriend to a game this summer.  My younger son (17) stopped by on his break from being an usher at the Friendly Confines during the middle innings to say hi and see how we were doing.  It was great having both my boys at the park on Father's Day.  Despite the Cubs unbearable performance at the game and for that matter the whole season, the older one wanted to stop after the game for a t-shirt because he didn't have a Cubs one.   He also bought one for his girlfriend.  As we drove home talking about the game, my son caught me shaking my head.  He asked me why.  I told him it was because I was sorry I made him into a Cub fan.  It is the standard joke we tell about a parent dooming their children to  the misery of watching the loveable losers at Wrigley.  But I'm not really sorry.  My sons share a passion for the Cubs and for baseball that transcends winning or losing.  They watch their team.  God or bad, win or lose, rain or shine,  the Cubs are their team.  They won't jump on a bandwagon or be fair-weather fans.  I respect that.  They go to the games for the right reasons and while they are often disappointed at the results of the game, they are always entertained and glad they went to the park.  Do I wish they would win more, yes.  Am I going to stop being a fan, Hell No!

The Cubs will be in Heaven in 2007!
