Howie Kendrick and Jered Weaver for Aramis...

On MLB.com forums, there is a lot of talk about how desperate the Angels are for a bat. Even on Halos Heaven, people are pleading with Bill Stoneman to do something. There is a lot of talk that the Angels have been in talks with the CUBS and would be interested in sending Jered Weaver and Howie Kendrick for Aramis Ramirez.......I would say...where do we sign???

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

I don't think so
Kendrick is hitting .483 (in 29 at bats) since he came back to the majors, and he's projected as a 20 home run guy. If we got Kendrick for Rameriz straight up, we'd likely be getting the better part of the deal. The Angels are very aware of this.

Jered Weaver is also a pronounced fly ball pitcher. He's great in pitcher's parks and neutral parks, but if he made half his starts at Wrigley, his numbers wouldn't be near what they are in Anahiem.

The absolute most we could hope for from a deal with the Angels is one of the two, plus money and/or a minor leaguer. And I don't think Stoneman would make even that trade.

Maybe You're Confsuing Beer Baron With Me
And it was Ken Forsch I was talking to yesterday, not Bill Stoneman. Moreover, a trade of Jered Weaver and Howie Kendrick did not come up in conversation for anybody, much less for Ramirez. This rumor is the stuff of someone's imagination.

I never "said" it myself....
I told you guys that I just post 'em as I see 'em.

What are you drinking?
and can I have some?

Weaver will not be leaving Anaheim for a long time. Don't kid yourself.

Bring me the head of Rafael Furcal.

Did I mis-type the phrase?
I said I posted what I saw........not what "I" intend to happen

by TheBeerBaron on Jul 30, 2006 5:21 PM CDT up reply actions

There is absolutely no way...
... the Angels will trade Jered Weaver. He's got a shot at being AL Rookie of the Year.

As I have said elsewhere, any discussion of Ramirez-to-the-Angels must start with Brandon Wood. And they're not dealing him either.

by Al Yellon on Jul 30, 2006 5:23 PM CDT reply actions

Slim...
but the chance it's there.  I don't see him getting it over guys that have been up all season, like Liriano or Papelbon.

no matter how you slice it
and regardless of who may be had or not had on this team....it is 5:45 pm the day before the deadline and lets face it, no one wants what the cubs are willing to dump.

hendry unfortunately cant trade our crap for someone elses slightly better crap and the prospect of getting any deals done is looking bleak.

at this point, for players such as walker / nevin / etc., take any A level baller we can get and start thinking about next year.  again.

by geetarnwhiskey on Jul 30, 2006 5:45 PM CDT reply actions

There are better deals to be made
As the Angels increase their offer for Tejada, Hendry should be there waiting to insert Ramirez.  Texas seems willing to let Blalock go for bullpen help.  And while he's supposedly a DH type, Ryan Shealy can be had for a decent reliever.

While it's true that the one thing Hendry did well over the winter is retooling the bullpen, I would blow that up to upgrade at other positions.

by davidalanu on Jul 30, 2006 6:45 PM CDT up reply actions

If The Angels Are Interested in Ramirez.....
....it must involve Mathis, McPherson, maybe Bootcheck, maybe Kendry Morales although I don't know where the Cubs would play him. The Angels don't have many outfield prospects. It could possibly also involve Maicier Izturis and Chone Figgins. Come to think of it, I wouldn't be surprised to see Juan Pierre in Anaheim, either.

by BeerCub on Jul 30, 2006 5:47 PM CDT reply actions

Come To Think Of It....
...Figgins' natural position is second base. if the Cubs could get Maicier Izturis and Figgins, they'd have a very serviceable SS-2B combination. Pierre and Ramirez for Figgins, Izturis, McPherson, and Bootcheck. Talk about a salary dump by the Cubs.

by BeerCub on Jul 30, 2006 5:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Ugh.
McPherson strikes me as a Kelton/Dubois/Choi type ... someone who will never live up to the hype.

Bootcheck is twenty-eight in October, for heaven's sake -- not a prospect any more, and I think he's had some Prior-like injury problems.

Again -- any Ramirez discussions with the Angels start for me, with Brandon Wood.

by Al Yellon on Jul 30, 2006 5:57 PM CDT up reply actions

wat bout?
Figgins he is a solid 2nd baseman dont ya think? as a #2 hitter he can hit the ball all over the field.

The Angels LOVE Figgins...
... and Stoneman hates trading anyway. Figgins isn't going anywhere.

by Al Yellon on Jul 30, 2006 6:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Um.....
...lately especially, the Angels aren't so much in love with Figgins. He could be had.

by BeerCub on Jul 30, 2006 6:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Stop clinging to
the "Stoneman hates trading" garbage......They need a bat, plain and simple....they have a BOAT load of prospects.......

by TheBeerBaron on Jul 30, 2006 6:16 PM CDT up reply actions

"Stoneman hates trading"...
... is a fact, not "garbage". Name some significant trades he's executed recently involving top Angel prospects.

by Al Yellon on Jul 30, 2006 6:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Whatever, Pal..
....Stoneman DOES hate trading. I can't help it if your ideas on the subject don't transfer over to him. Look him up.

by BeerCub on Jul 30, 2006 6:17 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah, he doesn't make a lot of moves
if any, but you guys hide behind this statement all the time...

by TheBeerBaron on Jul 30, 2006 6:22 PM CDT up reply actions

"Hide"??
How can you "hide" behind something that's true?

by Al Yellon on Jul 30, 2006 6:23 PM CDT up reply actions

What????
Hide behind what???? What are you talking about? That's the way Stoneman is, what else do you want us to say??? I live in California. about 25 minutes from Anaheim. I go to a lot of Angel games. I'm pretty familiar with Stoneman. He's NOT a typical GM.

by BeerCub on Jul 30, 2006 6:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Bootcheck.....
...I was for the Cubs getting him earlier, and wouldn't ind having him still. He's getting on, but he's often been caught in a numbers game with the Angels over the years. He's not a centerpiece of any deal, but if he were thrown in or a condition, I'd be glad to have him. He's one of those guys who does much better as a starter than a reliever, and at the major league level so far, the Angels have not used him consistently in either role. Really long story short, he's worth a flyer.

by BeerCub on Jul 30, 2006 7:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Soriano
If the Cubs have any interest in this deal with the Angels they need to get uit done before Angels try to land Soriano because I'm sure they would lose prospects in a deal like that.  I think the Nat's are lookin to get 4 prospects in return.
Without a WS in 07 or 08--- AC 5 63 100 Wait, theres not enough room on that sign in right feild for triple digits. We Better Win Soon!!!

by LilLPLancer23 on Jul 30, 2006 6:50 PM CDT reply actions

Soriano's Not Going To The Angels
Stoneman doesn't do rent a players, especially one of Soriano's magnitude. Bowden won't let teams talk contract with Soriano pre-trade, so there's no assurances Soriano would re-up with whoever got him in a trade. Stoneman does nothing without assurances, he's risk averse.

by BeerCub on Jul 30, 2006 6:57 PM CDT up reply actions

According to one report
The Cubs have interet in Nick Adenhart, who is of course coming off of reconstructive elbow surgery.

by davidalanu on Jul 30, 2006 7:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Ugh.
That'd be a mistake, then.

FWIW, I think Soriano is going nowhere. The Nats have new ownership and need to make a splash by getting a big name talent -- and since they have one there in Soriano, why not keep him?

by Al Yellon on Jul 30, 2006 7:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed
I've been saying it for weeks, I don't think Soriano is going anywhere.  The Nats will not trade Soriano unless they get real value, not Yankee crap.  The Angels are the logical choice but they won't trade their top prospects.  McPherson doen't fit in Washington so I think Soriano is staying.

by rlpete on Jul 30, 2006 8:40 PM CDT up reply actions

If Ramirez could be traded
for Kendrick or Wood, or for a combo of Adenhart and Aybar, I think I could be pretty happy with that.
"If it takes forever."

by JDay on Jul 30, 2006 11:30 PM CDT reply actions

Is that enough?
I would want one ML-ready player back.  Aybar is close, but Adenhart is in low-A, and coming back from surgery.  I would certainly take the Santana-Aybar-somebody package they supposedly offered to Baltimore.

by davidalanu on Jul 31, 2006 6:13 AM CDT up reply actions

Nuts.
Maybe I'm missing some sort of point here but trading Aramis Ramirez would be one of the last moves that the Cubs should make. Talk about making a deal just to make a deal; thats exactly what that is. Why would you trade a player who hasn't reached his full potential yet, is just 28 and is by the way turning into quite a decent third basemen. I guess there's no one alive that can tell me that it would be a good thing to take what is right now your most important bat out of an anemic line up. I don't care if they think it "will help next year". Its not going to. What are they going to get for him? A pitcher who is lights out in the minors. Do we need another Rich Hill? Hell no we don't. Ramirez is a guy they ought to lock up. You don't know baseball if you can honestly say that D Lee and Ramirez don't make a frightful 3-4 combo in a lineup.
