Mark Teahen - Let Ramirez Walk

The Cubs have to figure out how to get this guy.  The Royals have Gordon hitting the lights out in AA .322/.427/.576 27 HRs 94 RBI, so they have a logjam at 3rd.  What could the Cubs offer?  I say Murton plus a pitcher.  That would also allow the Cubs to sign either Lee or Soriano in the offseason.

Teahan, by the way, is a great fielder and he's been one of the hottest hitters in all of baseball since July 1.  The kid is for real.  .291/.361/.528

The Royals
would not make that trade, unless the name of that pitcher was "Zambrano."

If the Royals decide to trade Teahen, there will be a big bidding war for him--one that will take a lot more than Matt Murton and Jae-Kuk Ryu to win.

The Royals may have to trade Teahen sometime down the road, but I doubt they'll do it this off-season.  They'll probably start Gordon in the minors (to delay his arbitration clock) and not call him up until June anyway.  Then they can trade Teahen at the trade deadline or the next off-season.

Maybe the Cubs
don't have the right pieces to make a deal, but he's certainly not worth Zambrano.  I like the kid a lot, but I wouldn't give up one of the top starting pitchers in the game for him.

If Liriano, Hernandez, or Santana is being offered up for him, then, of course, the Cubs have no shot, but I don't think any of those guys will be.

Of course
he isn't worth Zambrano and I wasn't saying he was.  I'm just saying the Cubs don't have a pitcher to toss in with Murton to make it worth the Royals while to trade Teahen to us other than the Big Z, who could be traded to pretty much any club in the majors right now.

The Yankees would honestly seriously consider trading A-Rod for Zambrano even up and even pay a chunk of A-Rod's salary.  That's how valuable the Big Z is right now.

Fair Enough
Though I think you may be undervaluing the Cubs young pitching.

Like I wrote, maybe the Cubs don't have the pieces to entice KC, but I don't think they are so far off.

or the year after he will be.

That's a pretty good review
of the the point I made in July I appreciate it, and still think Teahan would be a nice trade option.

Just to show you...
... that Mr. Sorrow and I don't always disagree, I think this'd be a great idea also. We were discussing this at the game today. It seems possible that the Royals might move Teahen to 1B (yes, I know they have Shealy, but he could DH) or OF and keep both of them.

The guy I'd love to get from KC is David DeJesus, who could play CF and lead off.

The Royals' pitching is horrendous. I'll bet the Cubs have some pitchers who would interest them.

by Al Yellon on Sep 2, 2006 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions

It makes a lot more sense
to spend on scarcity, right?  That was my point all along Also, DeJesus would be a better alternative to Pierre, he'd provide another year for Pie to develop and after that time, Jones could be traded (his contract will be dramatically undermarket valuation by then) for a young player - preferably a true prospect at SS.  In the meantime, Hendry could get back to his dream guy, Tejada again this off season.

Side Note: Tejada-type offseason trades - the performace of Rich Hill the second half is making him VERY VALUABLE trade equity.

by Santos Sorrow @ Bleed Cubbie Blue on Sep 2, 2006 5:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.
Think the Orioles would take Hill as part of a Tejada package?

by Al Yellon on Sep 2, 2006 5:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I think Hill and Pie would just about do it
but, I dont know - as you know i am a hill guy.  id be 50/50 on that deal.

How old is Tejada?
That's be my key to the deal.

Is that rhetorical?
because player profiles aren't exactly hard to find, here is one for you.

Teahen and DeJesus
I like the numbers from both of these guys.

DeJesus definitely seems like a better player in CF than Juan Pierre-- at least, offensively.  What's DeJesus's defense like?  Is he a legit centerfielder?

by Romero on Sep 2, 2006 6:56 PM CDT up reply actions

He's been playing LF...
... but he can definitely handle CF. Has a way better arm than Pierre. Of course, most 10-year-olds do.

by Al Yellon on Sep 2, 2006 7:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd be surprised if Teahen is available soon
but I like the scenarion involving Dejesus. I'm sure we have something that could interest the Royals in either case, without giving up a frontline starter.

Hill and Pie for Tejada would also be a nice deal. I'd go for that.

If Ramirez walks, I'd like to see the Cubs make a run at Hank Blalock. His numbers have slipped the past couple of years, but he's still pretty decent and he's young. He also has the attitude and personality that this team needs. He has some intangibles that aren't measured on a stat sheet.

So much for the law of averages.

by JDay on Sep 3, 2006 2:29 AM CDT reply actions

I've always liked Blalock...
... but I'd like to know WHY his numbers have slipped, before I'd commit to him as my 3B.

He has played a handful of games at 2B in his career. Could he handle that position?

by Al Yellon on Sep 3, 2006 4:13 AM CDT up reply actions

Teahen is an interesting player...
He has both speed & power & can play a couple positions.

He's still cheap & for a small market team like the Royals, it doesn't make sense for them to move him. It would take 2 top pitching prospects like Veal & Gallagher. Not sure if that would be a good move or not. Alex Gordon will likely start for them at 3rd next year.

My guess is they would be more willing to move Sweeeney.

Let's just hope Aram stays with the Cubs.

I like where you are going with this...
Mark Teahen is very intriguing......i would love to have the flexibility (no Aramis) to have a serious chance at Soriano....
