Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Jim Hendry To Hold News Conference...

... today at 1:30 at the Hilton.

There are unconfirmed rumors that this might be to announce a contract extension for Carlos Zambrano.

Use this thread to post thoughts and comments and the updated info after the n/c is held; by that time I will be heading downtown.

Sweet.
Did you know Lou hasn't met Derek Lee yet? crazy.

Interviewer: 2nd Base. Is DeRosa your guy?
Lou: Well... ya know. Versatility is his key strength.

He did say later that he expects DeRosa to be the guy.

But I like that he hasn't met these guys, so that he goes into Spring Training with an open mind to play the best players.

He LOVES Murton. Likes the stats, but the past two days has made him just love his character.

And always just refer to him in speaking as, "that big name pitching prospect that will be among many others to have no panned out for the Cubs".

That's my suggestion when dealing with the name "Jeff Samardzija". (typed from memory! O'Doyle rules!)

I was hoping that when we had Grudzielanek and Garciaparra, that we would sign Mientkiewicz (I had to look that one up).  That would have been the greatest infield of all time (well, at least listening to broadcasters trying to describe the double play).

I'm up here in Minnesota, and when Mientkiewicz (along with Pierzynski) was with the Twins, they had this funny ad campeign where they sang a song that taught us how to spell both of their names.  It was so catchy, I can still sing the M-I-E-N-T-K-I-E-W-I-C-Z part of it to this day...

Some more highlights of Piniella Interview
Lou and the interviewer basically went around the horn and described the lineup as follows:

1b: DLee, obviously -- Lou was highly complimentary of Lee's talent and attitude but hasn't actually met Derrek yet.

2b: Lou said DeRosa was still the probably starter but also mentioned DeRosa is highly versatile and that Theriot is a possiblity as well.

ss: Izturis also still seems the likely starter. On a bright note, Lou seemed to indicate that he'll probably bat Izturis eighth but the two-spot (groan) is a possiblity as well. Lou also mentioned Cedeno (double groan) as a possible backup and Theriot as well.

3b: ARam, the usual praise for his hitting.

Catcher: Just usual comments about Barrett (good offense) and Blanco (good defense).

Overall general comment: "[Our] infield [is] in darn good shape!"

Lou spoke much less specifically about the outfield. He spoke favorably about Matt Murton's character -- specifically "[He's an] engaging young man."

He also mentioned Soriano and, yes, Jacque Jones (not going into any details though). He mentioned Pie, too, but said he'd not seen him play.

Regarding pitching, Lou described Zambrano as the "ace." He mentioned Lilly, Marquis and Hill nonspecifically. About Prior, Lou said he hasn't talked to him but heard from Rothchild that "everything is go."

About the closer situation, Lou said he's heard from Rothchild that "[there's] no doubt [Dempster's] gonna bounce back." And Lou mentioned Demp's Harry Caray imitation. Lou described Kerry Wood as a "wild card."

Just wanted to pass along some highlights. Those are all the notes I managed to take.

his signing doesn't warrant a press conference.......it has to be announcing that Zambrano signed an extension.

Nice signing but
There is no way that DeRosa is going to be able to get him the ball consistently, and we'll never make the Super Bowl unless we get some pressure on Todd Helton in the playoffs.

DeRosa
was the starting QB for Penn in college.  Todd Helton was the starting QB at Tennessee, until some kid named Peyton Manning showed up on campus.  The point is that with DeRosa and Samardzija, the Cubs are putting together a decent football team.
