The Friday Funnies

So, now that the Red Sox have taken a 2-0 lead in the World Series, we wonder: who should Cubs fans be rooting for this fall?

against my beliefs....
normally I cheer for the NL to win, Im a NL girl only. This year, one of my closest friends, a hard core Red sox fan, passed away at the beginning of the season. So, in honor of him I am rooting for an AL team. hell might have frozen over indeed......

Hey! I resemble that remark... ;-)
I grew up near Cleveland and lived there for many years before coming to Chicago.  The only good thing about suffering through those many many lean years of the Indians sucking was the ability to get your own section at the old Municipal Stadium.  That's right, I said "section"!

I remember being there one September against Seattle when there was about 3,000 in the stands.  Of course, I was also there when they were shooting crowd scenes for "Major League" and the place was packed with over 73,000.  That was something...

I'm kinda scared to move again though.  I mean, I go from a city where the river catches on fire and to a place where the river springs a leak!  What's next?

DH Hitters
I hate this switching between DH and no DH during the Series.  Why doesn't the NL adopt the DH rule?  Lot more exciting!  Any thoughts?

I would like to know
why the AL wouldn't adopt the NL rule and let the Pitcher hit. Now I guess you see the catch 22.

Personally I don't like the DH rule. I think it looks good only in video games. A pitcher should be able to handle the bat and all go hitters should be able to field their positions. If not then let's introduce another rule wherein each team will have a defense and an offense. In other words the entire lineup is constructed with Designated Hitters and when it is time for the other team to bat then 8 Felix Pie's or Tori hunter's will play defense. It would be much more exciting wouldn't it?

bleah
no, thanks.  I'd much rather have the pitcher bat.  It forces managers to be much more strategic.  I always used to wonder why AL pitchers threw so many complete games; when I moved to Chicago 15 years ago, I figured it out (I never even gave a moment's thought to being a Sox fan).

Train wreck ahead?
Actually, I find it amusing to watch AL teams scramble when they have to play in NL ballparks.

If the Red Sox decide to put Ortiz at first base, I expect half the Colorado line-up to try bunting in that direction.

Against the DH
I wish the AL would get rid of the DH rule. Having the pitcher bat makes the manager manage. It's the original intent of the rules of baseball. I don't think having the DH makes the game any more exciting.

Would you want a designated free throw shooter in basketball so someone like Shaq doesn't have to shoot free throws? Didn't think so.

I have always hated
the DH. Just for fun, if ALL the starting 9 were DH's and you have a separate 9 for the field, who would your offensive and defensive players be on the  Cubs using the 2007 players?

Instead of a DH, why not an EH...
...as in "extra" hitter?

You'd have your normal starting lineup of 9 position players - yes, the pitcher would hit - and then you'd have a 10th person, the EH, that would only hit, not be in the field.  This way, you'd have the best of both leagues - the need for managerial strategy on when to pinch-hit for the pitcher, bunt, etc., as well as the excitement of having a David Ortiz-type in the lineup.

I can think of only one negative to this scenario - but it's a big one, at least to the purists/traditionalists, of which I'm one.  Having 10 guys in the batting lineup breaks up the natural symmetry (is that the word I'm looking for?) of 3's and 9's in the game.  A perfect game would no longer mean 3 and only 3 times through the lineup.

To me, that's enough of a reason NOT to do this, but speaking objectively, I think we're at the point (and have been for awhile) where it's worth considering.

The AL scrambles in NL parks?
In the past two seasons there have been 504 interleague games and the AL has won 291 of them.  Seems like more than scrambling they've actually come away with a win or two on the road, eh?

by TR on Oct 26, 2007 8:54 PM CDT reply actions

Ah, but it's a different story...
... in the World Series.

AL Teams' records in NL parks in the WS:

  1. 0-3
  2. 0-2
  3. 0-2
  4. 1-2
  5. 1-2
  6. 1-3
  7. 0-2
Total since 2000: 3-16

That's pretty significant, I'd say.

Just off the top of my head
The Red Sox swept the Cardinals and the White Sox swept the Astros.  Hard to see how they lost in the NL parks.

by TR on Oct 26, 2007 9:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Again off the top of my head
I was living in New York in 2000 and was actually at the clinching game.  It was only a five game series and I think the Yankees won 2 of 3 at Shea.

So, assuming the rest of the records you have down here are correct, that would make the WS record of AL teams in NL parks 9-11 since 2000.

Not very significant, I'd say.

Shoot.
I must have gotten these backwards. Sorry for the confusion.

Looks like it rained last night and there are some wet poodles(?)

Quite a few puddles.
I looked at the cams earlier -- the equipment doesn't seem to have moved. I don't think they're doing any work today.

Bossard mentioned that
a day of rain could delay the project by 5 days. It would be nice to see the project plan.

Uh.....the movie reference, ballhawk
Wasn't "Major League" shot at Milwaukee's County Stadium????????

From Wikipedia:

Despite being set in Cleveland, the film was principally shot in Baltimore because it was cheaper and the producers were unable to work around the schedules of the Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns. County Stadium, then the home of the Milwaukee Brewers, doubles as Cleveland Municipal Stadium for the film, although several exterior shots of Municipal Stadium were used, including some aerial shots taken during a rare sellout game.

Yes, most of it was shot at County Stadium...
...in Milwaukee but there are a few scenes of old Municipal Stadium and downtown Cleveland at night.  The lights are on and you can clearly see the stadium was packed.  That's the game I was at, and even though it took a movie promotion to fill the place up, it was still something to behold.  Of course, the ignorant masses (myself included) didn't know at the time that only the aerial scenes were being shot.  We figured the cameras could be on us at anytime, so the place was rocking.  73,000 fans going crazy - man, was it loud.

And of course, there are the opening scenes of downtown Cleveland, the Flats and the near West Side, set to music by Randy Newman.

Trivia note...
... despite the fact that they covered up the words "Milwaukee County Stadium" on the scoreboard there during the filming, there are scenes in "Major League" where you can clearly see an ad for WTMJ -- a Milwaukee TV station -- on that scoreboard.
