Girardi To Manage Yankees

It's official -- to be announced tomorrow.

Count me surprised. Count Don Mattingly "extremely disappointed", according to the article -- he won't be accepting a job on Girardi's coaching staff.

With A-Rod leaving and several other free agents likely departing, they may be setting Girardi up to fail.

We shall see.

Happy day
Happy day for Joe and for the Yankees.

And a good day for Northwestern.

Bad day for the Cubs in my opinion longterm as I really hoped he'd be available to replace Lou in 2 years.

He might still be
I can also be colored "surprised" by this announcement.  Girardi (while remaining a guy I have a huge amount of respect for) does not have much major league managing experience.  By my count, he has one year of managing experience in Florida, no coaching at any level.  This is quite a jump for Girardi--being expected to take the Yankees to the World Series YESTERDAY in an ultra-stressful work environment, where every move is scrutenized (sp?) nationally and major stars are moving on.

He has the guts to last in this position...but if things go sour, the slope in New York is pretty slippery.  He might not last all that long.

Actually
he was the Yankees bench coach in 2005. I'm happy for Girardi, but even with the success Piniella had this year, I still think Girardi was the better choice for the Cubs.

Doubt it.
It would, most likely, be Alan Trammell ... or one of those upcoming kids from 1984, say ... Jody Davis.  But then again, the Yankees by-passed Mattingly.

Hopefully we don't even need to go there for a couple more years.

count me not real surprised but disappointed.....
The Yanks really needed to go to a guy with some big league managing experience, and Girardi was clearly a favorite and seemingly the heir-apparent before going to Florida.  I was hoping they'd steer toward Mattingly, however, as again, I was holding out some hope that Girardi would somehow/some way be available to transition in behind Sweet Lou when his short tenure-run is up here.

The Yanks have some good prospects with a good mix of other veteran leaders that are staying.  I would guess that he does succeed there; the question will remain, however, if he succeeds enough to compete with the suddenly free spending Boston Yankees....I mean Boston Red Sox.

Let's see if Joe
burns out Kennedy, Hughes and Chamberlain like he did to Josh Johnson, Nolasco and Sanchez.

by cubswin on Oct 29, 2007 8:19 PM CDT reply actions

That's a Lie
If you look at the pitch counts, Girardi pulled these guys before the Pitch Counts entered the dangerous area.  Had he pulled them earlier, you would have been crying that he was too soft.

by frustratedfan on Oct 29, 2007 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions

you are once again wrong.
Girardi mishandled the staff and that is just another reason he got canned.

by cubswin on Oct 30, 2007 9:38 AM CDT up reply actions

He Got Fired
in Florida because the owner and the GM are idiots.

As for "mismangement" of the pitching staff, the "big lie" is that he abused Sanchez, Olsen and Nolasco.   In 2006 Sanchez had 2 games where he went more than 110 pitches.  His high was 114.  In 6 games he went between 100 and 110, and 6 he went from 90 - 100.   In 2007, he went from 90 - 100 in 3 and 100-110 in 2 with a high of 109 pitches.
In 2006 Olsen had 5 games over 110 pitches with a high of 115 and 6 games in the 100-110 range.   In 2007 he had 3 in the 100-110 range and 1 in the 110-120 range.  His high was 119 pitches.   NOlasco had a high of 110 in 2006 (one game) and a high of 100 in 2007.

That's not a pattern of abuse.  Quite the contrary, that's a pattern of moderation.

by frustratedfan on Oct 30, 2007 2:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Girardi is an idiot
and he will fail.

He is NOT a good manager.  Good managers don't get into pissing contests with their owners while the players (being paid by the owners) are stuck in the middle... all in the midst of a contending season.

The GM of the Marlins is a genius.  Girardi is not.

Pitchers get hurt
It happens.   The pattern of use by Girardi does not appear to be abusive.

that all 3 were hurt most of the year in 07.  You really are a koolaid drinker.

People, people, people...
Outside of Joe Torre, do you know what the half-life of a Yankees manager is over the last few decades?  About one year.  Seriously.

Between the two bookends of managing stability, Ralph Houk (7 years, '67-'73) and Joe Torre (12 years, '96-'07), the Yankees had about 20 managerial changes in 22 years.  Granted Billy Martin accounted for about half of them ;-)  but my point is, if you're still holding out hope for Girardi to take over for Lou in a couple years, keep the faith.  Whenever Lou decides to hang them up, chances are very good Joe will be available.

Heck, I'll go out on a short limb and say Joe gets the ax within two years, comes to Chicago and takes over for Brenly in the booth.  Then when Lou decides to leave, Joe and Ryno will vie for the managing spot.

What,
is Girardi just going to go from job to job beating out every team's iconic player for a managerial job?

Although, I do think you're right.  I cant see the Steinbrenners Junior having much more patience with Joe G than their dad did with Virdon, Martin, Lemon, Martin, Howser, Michael, Lemon, Michael, King, Martin, Berra, Martin, Piniella, Martin, Green, Dent, Merrill, and Showalter.

Good job on the Yankee managers list,
however you missed Howser's one game interim stint between Martin and Lemon in 1978. So it should read Virdon, Martin, Howser, Lemon, Martin, Howser, Michael, Lemon, Michael, King, Martin, Berra, Martin, Piniella, Martin, Piniella, Green, Dent, Merrill and Showalter. My opinion, Girardi will last a lot longer with the Yankees than Lou will with the Cubs.

i doubt
that one.

I don't mean Lou will be fired
But he's signed for two more years. He'll be 66 then. My opinion is he won't stay beyond that.

by markleonette on Oct 29, 2007 9:39 PM CDT up reply actions

I know
I left out his one game stint since he wasn't actually hired and fired.

I like the list, it actually reads like a casting sheet for the Bronx is Burning - Martin, Howser, Berra, Piniella, and Dent were all in the movie.

by HectorVillanueva on Oct 30, 2007 6:13 AM CDT up reply actions

Apparently...
... the deal has not yet been consummated.  What happens if Girardi for some reason does not accept?

The Yanks are really up a creek then...

We've seen weirder things happen.

by initram on Oct 29, 2007 11:58 PM CDT reply actions

What this really signals...
...is that Brian Cashman is the one pulling the strings now, having deposed the Tampa contingent and getting the Steinbrenner family to let him run the team without major interference.

This should be very interesting times in New York.

Joe Girardi
is garbage.

Any real man who played for a man like Torre and saw him treated like that would absolutely not take the job and would spit in their faces.

I hated him when he was with the Marlins and I still hate the man.  He has no class.  Have fun in New York, Girardia you parasite.

by nickler on Oct 30, 2007 11:22 AM CDT reply actions

that's a bit much, doncha think?
Mattingly would have gladly taken the job.  Is he a parasite, too?

by davidalanu on Oct 30, 2007 5:53 PM CDT up reply actions

I mentioned this the other day
This happens all the time in baseball. Nickler has some real (unhealthy) issues with Girardi. To react this way about him is sort of weird. As I said before, loyalty only goes so far. See my previous post for examples.

by markleonette on Oct 30, 2007 6:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed
what up nickler?

Girardi spat in the face of a man who was interfering and was publically berating him.  Most people would take exception to this.  I like Girardi and think he will do well with a lot of talent.

Sorry nickler.

Not surprised in New York
Everyone saw it coming in the last week. George is officially out of it and this was Cashman's call to make so he was not going with Mattintingly. I feel sad. I hate it when  people I like work for
teams I hate and unlike a player it is not like you  can root for them individually while still hoping the team loses.

No idea why Nickler would think Girardi  has no class or why he should have turned down the job he dreamed of because of the ham handed way the Yankees handled Torre. Mattingly was not turning it down and now he may be with Joe on the Dodgers. I find Girardi too uptight ( not really forgiven him for forcing Andre Dawson to shave his moustache) but certainly a very decent & classy guy

This will be a real test for Girardi
and it will be interesting to see how he handles a bunch of high priced talent.  With his mentality, I am not so certain he is not best suited to manage young low payroll teams who are easier to mold, but I guess time will tell.

Just a quick Girardi story...
When I was 11 or 12, Joe Girardi was signing autographs at Sandburg Mall in Galesburg and my family and I just happened to be shopping there that day. I am sure he loved that little gig! All I knew about him is that he was the new Cubs catcher. At that time there was a baseball card/hobby shop at the mall. My dad and I searched the place high and low to find a baseball card or anything with his face or name on it with no luck. I ended up buying the newest Beckett Price Guide. It happened to have Robin Yount on the front. Joe very graciously signed it for me anyways and shook my hand. He was really nice and friendly and I liked that he was from the Peoria area as am I. I still have that magazine stuck away some where. Never could have told me he would be managing one of the biggest teams in baseball back then. Although I don't like the Yankees, I am glad his talent isn't wasting away in a broadcast booth.
Anxiously awaiting the arrival of Opening Day '08
