Open Thread: NLDS Game #1 -- Cubs vs. Diamondbacks, Wednesday 10/3, 9:00 CT

Baseball season's underway
Well you better get ready for a brand new day.
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
They're singing ...
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today
-- Steve Goodman
"A brand new day". That's what we have been granted, yet another chance at redemption and deliverance and victory. A few notes: Having just checked the Diamondbacks website again, it appears tonight's game is, at last, sold out. I assume a lot of the tickets sold in the last couple of days were purchased by Cubs fans. Let's rock their house!!!

The pitcher stats above are, of course, season stats. For some unfathomable reason, ESPN.com, who I have linked to all season for the pitcher's career stats vs. the opposing team's hitters, has decided to change the links to be for the postseason only -- so the links should now take you to a baseball-reference.com page. Why does it not surprise me that ESPN.com has done something fan-unfriendly?

Z did not face the Diamondbacks this season and since they have so many new faces on their roster, hasn't really faced anyone significant on their team more than three times (Eric Byrnes, 0-for-3). This could either work to Z's advantage... or disadvantage, depending. On what? Well, you know. On whether he's focused the right way or not. He was in Cincinnati on Friday. If he keeps that focus, you know how dominant he can be.

The Cubs beat Brandon Webb 6-2 at Wrigley Field on July 20; the score was made larger after Webb left the game, having given up three runs (two earned) in seven innings. No current Cub has hit him particularly well, although Jacque Jones is 3-for-8. Getting to him early and not letting him get his sinker working is the key to beating Webb. He's lost ten games this year (although he's 10-2 since that loss to the Cubs), so someone has figured him out. Since his scoreless-inning streak ended, he's 5-2 in 8 starts, but with a 4.33 ERA.

DAMN YOU BIZZLE!
Kidding, I had very good dreams last night about the Cubs upcoming series!

You know what is scary?  I have dreamt about the Cubs for the last 4 nights.  Mostly good, some wierd (me and my grandfather at Lou's house discussing the team with Lou's wife), and a little not great.

Here is to my dream last night!!!!!!!

GO CUBBIES (as my 18 month old daughter Gracie says whenever she sees the Cubs logo)

I can't get my mind off the game either!
Maybe its the ARam road jersey that I have sitting at the end of my desk!  I am in a small office, and as the only Cub fan here, among Angel, Dodger, Padre and Red Sox fans, they were all wishing me luck today.  Hard for me to stay focused on work!!

Butterflies are getting the best of me.  I hope the players can stay calm for another 3 1/2 hours!!

Zambrano
Maybe Carlos can throw that no-hitter in Phoenix that he fell just short of a few years back.

One other thing that is going to be critical... The Cubs hitters need to keep their heads and ultimately go for the kill. It seems to me that one trait of the Cubs offense is that they make a lot of threats but then let the pitcher off the hook. We've seen a few instances where the Cubs batters have a good game plan, have the pitcher on the ropes, but then strand a few runners. The next inning the pitcher comes back, Cubs batters swing away instead of work the counts, and before we know it, the aforementioned pitcher on the ropes pitches five or six solid innings.

The D-backs
are the first team since 1906 to have their league's best record while having the league's worst batting average.  They have given up more runs than they've scored, and of the six games against the Cubs this season, they only surpassed 3 runs once (5 vs. Marquis).  If this team keeps hitting like it hit in September, I don't see any reason why we can't dispatch Arizona rather easily.  I know, that's why they play the games... but I'm pretty optimistic about this series.  Can't wait until 9pm...

BTW, LOVE seeing Floyd between Lee and Ramirez.  I've liked that everytime Lou does it, adds a new dynamic to our lineup.  Go Cubs!

Since 1906...
and that was the Hitless wonders White Sox that won the WS from the 116 win Cubs.

We need to reverse that one also.

Me, too
I prefer Aramis right there in the 4 spot too. Seems like he's hit some 1st inning 2-run or 3-run homers for us down the stretch.

But I shouldn't gripe: Soto's in the lineup! Get a couple of hits and throw out a runner, kid, and Lou will play you all the way.

Drifting ... drifting ... foul.

I FEEL GOOD.
Been staying away from this site for the last few days (a glance here and there, lineup talk, etc.), because the suspense has just been killing me. That was the longest two days without baseball I've ever experienced (though the Pads/Rockies game was, as some others have also said, one of the best games I have ever watched start to finish). But I definitely like our chances in this series.

I have nothing to offer here except this: The article Al linked to about Woody reminded me of this excellent article that the New York Times ran on him before his comeback, June 3rd of this year. Read it and especially watch the embedded video to really get a sense of how hard that guy worked to get where he is. Dammit, it brought a tear to my eye the first time I watched it exactly 4 months ago when we weren't sure when (or if?) he'd come back, and watching it again now, it still does.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/03/sports/playmagazine/0603play-wood.html

He hasn't been the biggest contributor on field, but he certainly has contributed. Perhaps just as importantly, I think he's one of the spiritual and emotional leaders of this team. Without a doubt, he's a big reason why we are where we are.

GO WOODY AND GO CUBS.

The first time I read the NYTimes
article abour Kerry I was brought to tears.  It always makes me sad for the fans on BCB who are so quick to rip into Woody.  It is so great to see the guy making a positive contribution to the team now.

I have to beleive the negative posters (fromt he past) did not take the time to read the article or watch the embedded video.  Incredible stuff.  I love the hug that Santo and Woody had on Friday night.

I hope those guys have the chance to have three more hugs like that in October!!  Onward...

The simulator says...
The same baseball game simulator over at Dodger Sims Blog that predicted a Red Sox/Cubs World Series in the pre-season is giving the Cubs a win expectancy in Game #1 vs Arizona of 47.2%, while the Las Vegas Hilton is only giving the Cubs a win expectancy in Game #1 of 43.67%.

I am only predicting TWO things:
1. THE CUBS WILL WIN THIS

And I'll repeat what I have mentioned so many times as of late:
How poetic it is that Kerry Wood came back just in time - in THIS SEASON no less - to help the Cubs through the playoffs.

That said, this prediction as well:

2. WOODY WILL PLAY A KEY PART IN THIS MAGICAL POST SEASON ADVENTURE

GO CUBS.
Do us proud, gentlemen.

THROW THE SMALL SAMPLE SIZES OUT THE WINDOW
Except for Ramirez who has 24-AB's these are all small sample sizes.

Interestingly both are sinker ball pitchers although Zambrano is more power pitcher than Webb who is more effective at 88-90 MPH. He also has a above average curve and an occassion change that he avoids because it hurts him. Against lefties he has a two-seamer that backs in against lefties.

Zambrano is the key, if he avoids his cutter complex he will be as or more effective. This is all setting up otherwise one can say these two possess the best sinkers in the game, Z's a little heavier but both average about the same K's.

The other interesting anecdote is that both teams lead off hitters are their leading HR guy, Soriano with 34 and Young with 32. Soriano had 14 HR's in September and 7 lead off HR.

Here are my thoughts, Piniella stated that the ball was flying out of the park in batting practice yesterday and the roof will be open tomorrow night. It will be interesting how both pitchers approach those lead off hitters.

Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."

also put a < at the beginning and a > at the end, so you have a <> around the whole thing. That makes it an HTML tag.

Nice story
about Wood. I will admit that I never thought he would pitch again for the Cubs. I was wrong and very glad about it. I think he has done a good job and has been particularly good the last few weeks of the season. I'm still not certain that he won't go down to injury again; only time will tell. I can say that I am very happy to have him on the team for the playoffs.

I think Lou should have started Kendall
He's got the prefect bat to hit off of Webb and his play-off experience would go a long way today in this game.

But then again Soto is killing the ball right now so I'm not that upset.

by whatiswrongwithlarussa on Oct 3, 2007 1:29 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Problem with Kendall
is that the Snakes can run and Kendall hasn't thrown anyone out all season.

Soto at least gives us a chance to slow down their running game.

Couldn't Disagree More
Soto needs to be in the games if only to stop the Snakes' running game.  They're not mashers, they're manufacturers, so defense should be Lou's #1 priority at C.  I hope Soto starts every one of the games.  That he can mash is just a very nice luxury.

Don't Forget This, Either...
... in one of the last performances of the year for Big Z (can't remember if it was his last, or second to last), when Big Z started to get a little frazzled in the game, Soto went to the mound, tugged on his jersey, and talked with him.  I am sure that Soto knows how to talk to him in his native tongue to settle him in and help him focus.

I recall after seeing this, Zambrano got through the inning.

This is probably an intagible, along with the others tangibles (e.g., his hitting, his ability to throw runners out, his ability to handle pitchers) that was likely weighed heavily in the decision...

by initram on Oct 3, 2007 2:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

What initram said!
This to me is the big reason to have Soto in the lineup tonight....tomorrow, there's a better case for Kendall (but I think I'd still go with Geovany, barring strong evidence to the contrary).

by CaughtInTheVines on Oct 3, 2007 2:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Soto just grabbed a handful of jersey and got in Z's grille and that was that - the guy settled right down.  Maybe tough love is what Z needs?

I'm going to say not tonight myself, maybe this weekend.

I'll put it up as a diary, so it'll get a little notice before 53 diaries on why (insert player's name) isn't on the playoff roster, and 37 more on why Lou needs to (insert something else here) or we're doomed.

this season.  I always thought it was to break up the Righty Righty combination of Lee and Ramirez.

Going on for most of the year
It breaks up the pitching rhythm and with Lee or Theriot on 1B it opens up a bigger hole to the right side.

Right now Floyd is hitting 'on the ball' right now, he has hit many hard screamers but his swing has developed to lose the elevation he had in the past.

Floyd is a good clean up guy and Ramirez is okay either 4 or 5 hole.

and the bullpen
The diamondbacks have one left reliever on their NLDS roster. Bat a lefty 4th and one 7th, with Floy and Jones. The Dbacks can't bring in one righty reliever to just go through the order.

Hint for Piniella
If the Cubs hit a ball out to left field, have an cameraman ask Eric Byrnes for his comment on the fly ball.  Chances are he'll run to go conduct the interview and completely forget about catching the fly ball.

So I signed up for the postseason package.
I didn't know it was $14.95 for the who thing. I've just been getting audio all season.

Anyway, I click on the link for the Colorado game and I get the blackout thing. Now that's dumb.

I live in Eastern Nebraska. There are easily more Royals fans here than Colorado fans.

Sheesh.

Tonight is game one of fourteen
Living in Cleveland, I am part of a season ticket package with a bunch Indian fans.  So, in the draw I have game 2 tickets for the World Series.  The way I see it I need 14 wins to get to see the Cubs in the World Series.  7 by our beloved Cubbies and 7 by Cleveland.

If Cleveland does not play the Cubbies, there is no way I will be afford to travel and/or get tickets to a Cubs World Series.  So, for a fellow Cubs fan please send out good vibes to Cleveland as well tomorrow!!

My friend does tarot cards
I had my friend do some tarot card reads on the Cubs.

According to what came out on the Cubs we have a tough road ahead but we'll win it all.

And the hero is going to come from an unexpected sometimes badly thought of place.

Of course that hero could be Jones, Dempster among others who were once trashed by the fans.

For the record I had my friend do one on the Bears before last year's playoffs and the cards predicted the Bears would fall just short of their ultimate goal and it would take longer than expected to get back.

Oh and Rex Grossman's destiny is great but it is elsewhere.

TBS pregame
Ernie Johnson was trying to get Frank Thomas to say which one he'd rather hit against, Josh Beckett or John Lackey.  Thomas wouldn't take the bait, and refused to say.

I thought that was pretty lame.  He's working as a commentator, and he should offer an opinion.

Then I looked up his lifetime stats.  Against Beckett, Thomas is 3 for 17 lifetime, all singles.  .176 batting average.

Against Lackey, Thomas is 3 for 20 with a double.

Thomas was being fair.  He can't hit either one.

Seems to me that if LaRussa doesn't manage next season in St. Louis, he won't at all. He may pull a Lou Piniella and take a few years off. Tony has managed every single season since 1979. I imagine that he wouldn't mind stepping away to let himself recharge.

Charlie Chan At Wrigely Field
  Mr. Chanman,
I suppose we all consider the Cubs a sure thing to march on to the Serious except for recent reports of some nefarious activity down around Addison and Clark.  Rumors of out of town gamblers lurking around the F.C. have been heard. Fortunatly, by chance Inspector Chan, as usual on leave from the Honolulu PD, happens to be in town and has agreed to lend assistence to our local bumblers, so all should be well. He is accompanied by number one son Lee and number two son Jimmy along with his advisor mr. " Chicago brown" who is a dead ringer for his cousin Bermingham and who's son is playing double A ball in the Cub's system.
All will be well but watch out for some sinister characters sporting crooked moustaches, and I don't mean Bob Brenley.

Is this a Phillies Rockies game thread?

If you already don't know the answer to the Z cramping problem, have you been paying attention to the Cubs at all this season?

Socks
Most of the guys who wear their pants on top of their shoes do it to hide the fact that they are wearing high-tops (which look really ugly in a baseball uniform -- remember Bill Buckner?).

Most of the guys who wear their pant legs high do it because of tradition -- that used to be the way everyone wore their pantlegs.

This summer in now the annual visit to Coors
We sat with die-hard Rockies fans and we agreed that it could be a CHC & CO NLCS....Rockies really have a better lineup than the Suds 90 miles north of Wrigley. Good pitching was developing, they went to special sauce arms like the Cubs did following the false idea of finding sinker ballers.

Special sauce pitchers get K's and that reduces the odds of hitting HR's.

We also visited CO Springs to see what they have still on the farm and watched Hart, Soto, Pie, Patterson, Koshansky & Stewart.

All we have to do is have the first 15 batters take at least 6 pitches.  If we go 1-2-3 in each inning, that's 5 innings worth of batters.  Get a couple hits and it's over.

Zambrano's ERA nearly doubles after he's thrown 90 pitches.

reminds me off Wisc' cultural inferiority complex
Heck you think they would at least acknowledge that they won 90 games amazingly but that the underlying fundamentals are against them and if they continue it is like Minnesota in '87...or Mets in '69 but without the great starting pitching.

Exactly. ALL predictions are kinda premature at the moment: it's going to be decided entirely by who plays best in the next 3-5 games. I just wish they'd hurry up and play ball! :-)

2-3-2
NLCS is still a 2-3-2 format - so series games 3,4, and 5 will be at the team without the home field advantage. (Not 3, 4, and 6).

This first game...
This first game seems to me to be the only one that favors the D-backs.  It's their ace (whose numbers are alightly better than our ace's) at home.  If we can take Game 1 against Webb, I think we have very strong odds of sweeping.  If we drop game 1, I think it will be Cubs in 5.
------ TheRiot Squad ------

by RightFieldSucks on Oct 3, 2007 7:36 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

moreover
I think the key to our winning lies in our first and second batters.  If fonzie and theriot can get on, webb will have to pitch to lee, floyd, and aram (i can't find the stat now but I thought i saw that floyd has the best numbers against webb on the team).  On the other hand, if fonzie hits multiple first-pitch popups, we're gonna be in trouble.

It is deeper than this
Cubs record is extraordinary in winning series when they win the first game of the series and almost opposite when they lose it.

Now those are primarily 3-game series, and this is actually a two-game series back to back and a rubber game.

I would welcome you
to the porch, but I'm in bloomington.  Yeah, I went up and hung out in the Wrigleyville area for a few games this summer at some of the bars...sadly, I find the atmosphere down here better for games.  The only people that go to bars down here for games are fans, not just college kids (like myself) who want to get drunk (I'm not one of them).  It was a pretty disappointing time.

That being said, I have tickets to saturdays game, and if they don't complete the sweep then I'm considering staying up in the area for the Sunday game, but trying to find a place a little farther away to go than Murphy's, Cubby Bear, etc. to go in hopes that it may be more actual fans and less hard core drunks.

they will be no better than .500 next year. They a nucleus but should move Braun to the left field and have a very good hitting OF.

Find a real 3B man who doesn't give away outs and a couple more pitchers.

Here's the funny thing and shows 25-10 real fluke
Brewers without Braun Opening Day-May 24:  28-19
Brewers with Ryan Braun May 25-Closing Day: 55-60

Now when most teams add a guy who goes 35HR-100RBI, they improve.  Instead, the Brewers record was worse.

Also Braun hit .444 against lefties this year and .286 against righties.  Anyone else think Braun will fall down to earth against lefties?

Thanks

BRANDON WEBB...
He's so amazing that he personally swept the desert near Phoenix for rattlers bare-handed, skinned them, and used the skins to make boots that he sold to tourists in the >Brandon Webb Boot Outlet".

He wears the boots before and after games which gives him super=human powers. In fact, some say that Webb's boots rattle themselves.

This is the reason for the popular phrase: "Shaking in my boots".

Its b/c of Brandon Webb!

It is OCTOBER, and we're STILL PLAYING BASEBALL!!

yeah
pretty cool, anyway seven minutes out, listening to Rage against the Machine getting ready to cheer from Tampa as the only known BCB'er here in this god foresaken town!  I'm coming home when we get this series done!

about fifteen minutes now
I'm READY.  WE ARE READY.

One game at a time.  We win tonight, then we worry about tomorrow.

GO CUBS GO!

Game time approaches!
And they're carrying it on the radio!  I was worried for a minute, because they were airing The Pulse instead of the Red Sox/Angels game.  I won't have to deal with the TBS announcers tonight--I'll be listening for the first hour or so, and then I'm going to the bar, where you can't hear the announcers anyway!

I'm ready.  So are you.  Go Cubs.

Before each game, please remember to feed the bats.

Boy these interviews
are sure boring and low key. The one guy sounded about 90 yrs old that asked a question a minute ago. The Cubs will shake up this yawn fest!!!

Hey it's
Matt Murton's birthday today. How about a win for him tonight? Nicest present he could receive.

Took 15 minutes
for TBS to find 'goat' signage...and "The Big Skirt" is at best, boring.

There are professional sportscasters toiling away all over America (that are not named Caray, Brennaman, or Buck) that would like a shot at the gigs Ripkin, Gwynn, Thomas, Grace, and hundreds more -- did not earn.

(Exclude Matt Vasgergian from the 'others' group.)

15 minutes to go!
And I finally got my kids to fall asleep!  (My son - he's 8 - wanted to stay up, but he'd be toast at school tomorrow.  Maybe I'll let him stay up tomorrow night.)

GO CUBS GO!!!!!

My guess is...
before the NLDS is over, Ernie will learn how to say "Soto."  Soto will make sure he teaches him.  Big plays will do that!

GO CUBS!!!

Prince Fielder...he is neither.
