Open Thread: NLDS Game #2, Cubs vs. Diamondbacks, Thursday 10/4, 9:00 CT

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona -- History tells us stories.

In 1984, the Cubs won the first game of the first round, then the NLCS. In fact, they won the first two games. Didn't matter -- they lost the series. In 1989, they lost the first game, won the second, then lost the series.

In 1998, they got swept. In 2003, in a similar format to this year, they lost game one to Atlanta, won game two, and won the series in five.

In this case, history tells us nothing. But if ever there were a "must-win" game in this 2007 season and postseason, it's today in Phoenix.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Ted Lilly
 T. Lilly
Cubs
vs. Doug Davis
 D. Davis
D'backs
15-8 W-L 13-12
3.83 ERA 4.25
174 SO 144
55 BB 95
28 HR 21
vs. Ari -- vs. Cubs
Today's pitching matchup is a rematch of a game that occurred less than six weeks ago -- a 3-1 Arizona win that turned on one bad pitch by Ted Lilly to Conor Jackson that got smacked for a two-run homer. Here's what I wrote about it at the time. Other than the HR, Lilly threw a nice game, striking out eight and walking no one in six innings. Lilly has been outstanding all season, going 10-1 in games after a Cub loss, to me the true definition of a "stopper". His control has been terrific -- with only 55 walks in 207 IP, he was among the ML leaders in fewest walks for pitchers with that many innings. In his career, he has issued only ONE walk in 66 PA to anyone currently on the Arizona roster -- to Jeff Cirillo, who isn't likely to face him tonight.

Doug Davis threw even better against a Cub offense that, at the time, was having a terrible time vs. LHP. They turned that around in September. Davis, though, has given the Cubs fits throughout his career -- he's 7-5, 3.38 lifetime vs. the Cubs, with 86 strikeouts and 30 walks in 85 innings (and Davis isn't a strikeout pitcher). Last year's poor Cub team, though, beat up on Davis, beating him 11-4 while he was still a Brewer. Key stat from that game: six walks in five innings. If the Cubs will be patient and wait Davis out, they can generate some baserunners. Of course, they did that last night, too, and failed to bring them home.

It's still 4 hours to the first pitch but the pregame jitters have hit full force.  Can't remember being more nervous about the Cubs in recent years.  Another beautiful example of how baseball can make a grown man act like a little boy.

A few things reassure me
about tonight's game.
  1. I've never been at 2 games in a row and the Cubs lost both of them.
  2. The team has shown a resiliency this season. Every time it seems they're down, they rebound.
  3. Davis really is not very good. And we seem to have cast out our demons about lefties.
  4. I got tickets today over the net for the next series and I damned sure am planning on using them.

Soriano, to me
is icing on the cake.

I do not count on the guy to come through. But when he does, WOW!

That is why the #2 in Lou's lineup is so important - it is almost like the "top of the order" i.e., when Sori is in a "down streak" or meets up with a junk-baller, he's an automatic out.

Also, due to his injury, he is not a basestealing threat either.

In any case, I wrote last night off anyway - but tonight, I as well feel really good about their chances!

Yankees/Indians game coverage...
Did anyone see the Damon at-bat?  After the foul call was made, there were no replays shown of where the ball landed.  The whole time, the cameras were focused on the umpires and arguing managers.  When they finally showed replays, they had two views:the pitcher's view and a view of the foul pole where you can't even see the ball.  Horrible.

Monday was our 'sneak' preview
of how TBS was all-grown-up now, to push the Braves aside and handle network baseball.

Some thought "Well, that was a hastily put-together production at the last minute."

Bullshit. We know know that TBS is airing these games on the cheap.

We have example after example of bad baseball broadcasting in ALL of the games that have been aired so far. Dick Stockton's total lack of preparation last night was abysmal.

TBS is a joke. By the end of this week, start googling TBS Baseball. I guarantee you the bad reviews will start popping  up.

while I like to score home runs as much as the next guy, the likelihood of the cubs putting runs on the board like the rox do is unlikely.

we all know runs are hard to get in the playoffs, and say we can manufacture 1 or 2 more using a bunt it adds just that much pressure on the opposing pitcher that can change their game.

I don't want to see the D-backs suffer.

I think they have played out of their mind all year.  All year people have thought they weren't for real and all year they kept proving people wrong.  I'm sorry but that kind of dogged determination is hard not to admire.  And I really like their young players.

And I never want to face the guy again but Brandon Webb is F-ing amazing.

I'm sorry but I think this is a good team and will be for years to come.  So today I root against them today but not when they play against the Dodgers and Giants in future.

No the Yankees have a special place in my contempt filled belly.  They over play players specifically to bankrupt other teams.  They have f-ed up baseball for 70 years and when they lose I am convinced that it makes angels smile (heavenly ones not L.A.).

Contempt?
I have admiration. I wish the Cubs were the Yankees. In fact -- they SHOULD be the National League's version of the Yankees.

The Cubs have the money.

The Cubs have the rabid fan base.

However, the Cubs have been run by idiots for the last 50 years -- that's the difference.

The Yankees are playing within the rules, as they stand. They pay the luxury tax. Unless MLB decides to level the playing field, (as in the NFL) that's the way it goes.

Cubs fans should hope the new ownership - along with developing players -- spends money like a drunken sailor on shore leave.

Let the small markets whine -- I hear enough of that in this town. "We can't compete," "LA, Chicago and NY have an advantage." Damn right. And shame on those six teams if they are not in the hunt EVERY YEAR.

MLB seems to like things as they are. The Cubs have to exploit this in the future.

They are a major market team, they better spend like one. Let the small towns be jealous.

Win tonight and the momentum swings back to the Cubs. It was a "must win" for D'backs last night and a must for the Cubs tonight.

Besides if the Cubs win tonight...I'll be able to sleep, i will not be upset with co-workers, family, and friends. I can kick back and enjoy life again.

Grrrrrrr

Don't worry, those that don't believe
will show up as soon as something bad happens (just like last night).  I do think the vast majority of BCB'ers still believe.

Baseball is a game of failure.  If there is one thing that this Cub team has over the many teams since WWII is that it knows how to overcome failure.  So let the negative folks post when something goes wrong...these guys have shown a GRAET ability to overcome mistakes.  I do BELIEVE they will do more of this in the days ahead.

My hope is that those who have lost faith will have no reason to post tonight.  But most importantly, whatever happens, we come out of tonight's game with a W.

Prince Fielder...he is neither.

I can handle the negatice comments
As I said, baseball is a game of failure.  I expect the negative comments and it gives me that much more pleasure when the Cubs turn it around.

The world is full of different opinions.  I believe in free speech.  Knock yourself out!  I don't need a shelterred blog.  We can all exist together.  Have you ever heard me tell you otherwise??

My only point was, that I hope there is not much for those who do get negative to get negative about.  But batters do make outs 70% of the time, etc...

We are all here for the same purpose in the end. And I hope you are there for the Cubs third victory of the series on Sunday, but let's start with the first "W" tonight, agreed?

That might be the reason
but not necessarily....I believe the best teams (with the exception of the whiny-voiced Tony Gwynn) have been assigned to games which are always going to be 7pEST. You'll see the crappy pbp teams fade away as there are less games, and more than likely, this team will be TBS's #1 -- I assume that is why there are 3 in the booth for this one series -- this team works all the way through, including the NLCS.

Anybody assigned to a game that starts 10EST -- isn't the #1. I'm talking about YOU, Dick Stockton.

...Dean Richards said this afternoon on WGN that they will be syncing the radio broadcast with TV tonight.  It might not be perfectly in sync, but it is supposed to be a lot better than the 10 second or so delay that we had last night!

So, turn off the sound on your tv and crank up the mighty 720 AM!

TBS
How can a subpar network get the Div. Series?  ESPN at least has decent guys to call it, and it would be in HD.  The coverage sucks.

The top of the lineup has to produce.  Plain and simple.  Let's put last night behind us and get a split.

by LT on Oct 4, 2007 8:51 PM CDT up reply actions

The Reason Is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
TBS is determined to become a 'bigger' full-service network, adding MLB to its' NBA coverage.
However, if a network is still running "Friends" re-runs in prime time....and all programs are not first run....they are still NOT a prime network.

WGN doesn't claim to be more than a "Superstation." TBS decided to drop that label and go bigger.

How are they doin?

Soriano, Aramis and Lee are just comically bad.
And really, they're the ONLY three players on the roster who have been so terrible.

I don't think that I've ever seen a hitter like Soriano struggle like Soriano is struggling right now. If he comes within 2 feet of a pitch, it's a minor victory.

Same goes for Ramirez. Last at bat, he swung at two consecutive pitches that were 2 feet outside and in the dirt.

I expect this from 22-year-old Shawon Dunston. Not from world-class All-Stars like Aramis, Soriano and Lee.

Hate to disagree with ya Eman
But I think Davis continues to leave the Cubs flailing at that ridiculous 39mph lettuce he throws. Our approach is so ridiculously off-base against this guy.

We have Soriano, Lee, and Ramirez trying to take him 600 ft over LF, while we'd be much better off taking an opposite field approach. He can't get his fastball by anyone, so sit on junk and take him the other way. If he tries to sneak a heater by you, stay inside it and the big boys can still take it deep.

How is this happening? How is veteran team playing tight like this? Our only RBI's in this series are from rookies. How is this team, our team, being out-played by a very beatable team?

by martyblue on Oct 4, 2007 10:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Pressure, I agree, and
believe it, or not, but honestly the Cubs are truly mediocre.

They had losing records to the Pirates, and Reds, and Marlins! Remember how beatable they were.

Got beat in the overall season records by almost ALL above .500 teams.

It is our fantasy and disappointment that we "think" they are so much better than they are.

The D-Backs "should" be beatable - but they had the best record in the NL for a reason.

Look at their season record
Against .500+ teams outside of the Central.  It is not good and thus you have what you have here tonight.

In addition, our hitters refuse to swing at strikes. This approach is getting them into pitchers counts instead of hitters counts.  It seems that they are unwillingly to adjust their approach at the plate.  This has been their mo in a lot of the games I have watched.

It didn't work out yesterday, though.

In fact, this team has had an amazing (perhaps recordbreaking) ability to go scoreless for the last 6 innings of a game.

The Cubs need to get to Davis before the D-Backs get to their pen.

BIG 3
Soriano, D-Lee, and ARam: 1 for 17 so far.  If that weren't bad enough, D Lee didnt run out a third strike yesterday and dropped a DP ball today.  Soriano is turning into that rare player who can be a liability both at the plate and in the field.  Incredible.  Aram, besides being miserable at the plate, has not stunk it up in the field.  So he's the best of the 3.  He's the best of our 3 stars, going 0 for 6.  bad sign.

Lou was saving Z for 3 days rest.
Because we don't have a good 4th starter.  If we had Hart or The Employee pitching, I'm sure he wouldn't have done that.  It's not all his fault.  He can't throw for Lilly.  He can't hit or field for Soriano.

If they start hitting, then we can talk about Lou. Three runs in 13 innings isn't going to win you many games.

dood.
What's the point of this?  They're not winning.  We know.  They're not playing great.  We know.  Again, I ask -- do you think they WANT to lose?  Do you think that they WANT to go back to Wrigley down two?  Maybe they want to get swept.  Maybe this WHOLE thing is a plot by Dusty Baker and Jim Riggleman, assisted by Lou Pinella and Jason Marquis, those sneaky b@stards, to bring the City of Chicago to the VERY EDGE of a Cubbie victory... only to throw it.

A new team of Black-Sox, that's what these guys are!  It's not enough for them to just suck, they're doing it DELIBERATELY!!!

What's the point?  Doesn't it aggravate your ulcer?

This is our time. THIS IS OUR YEAR!

by drewishdrewid on Oct 4, 2007 11:23 PM CDT up reply actions

it doesn't make an iota of difference
if they are doing this deliberately or not. Your sarcasm is well taken. But the fact of reality is that they are stinking, pathetic in each and every department of the game. I have said all year that a lot of times we had to struggle and walk on all fours to even beat mediocre pitching. Now this is not what you expect to get from an expensive ball club. Not after how much we sucked last season and not after failing to make post season for 3 straight seasons being a big market ball club.

Again, most of the posters including myself are frustrated with the way we are loosing.

by cubsnlinux on Oct 4, 2007 11:36 PM CDT up reply actions

going
from worst to first isn't what you expected?

I didn't expect it either.  I expected a good, third or fourth place finish.

Lou did BETTER than that.  This team did BETTER than that.

We go back to Wrigley tomorrow.  It has to happen there.  Backs to the wall.

But yelling "LOU SUCKS" or "HENDRY BLOWS" or "SORIANO DOESN'T CARE" is, well stupid.

This is our time. THIS IS OUR YEAR!

by drewishdrewid on Oct 4, 2007 11:40 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree..
yelling doesn't solve anything but neither does riding high horses and accepting mediocrity. Did you read again what I wrote? The frustration at least for me is not that we are loosing but the way we are getting dominated in each and every department by these baby back. The Cubs president declared at the start of the season that our goal is not to win the division but to win the world series. I like that attitude and I like that goal. Winning the comedy central for a big market club like the cubs is way below break even. Its all about the ROI.

by cubsnlinux on Oct 4, 2007 11:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I think
that it's enough.  Yes, you wanna win the post season.  I think the Cubs still can.  But Baseball isn't a year long thing.  It's a years-long thing.  We can build on this team next year.
This is our time. THIS IS OUR YEAR!

by drewishdrewid on Oct 4, 2007 11:50 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah..
like we have 'building on' for the last 99 years. Looking at all the other teams in the post season I think we are looking like a AA team which won a lottery and got a chance to play in the post season with the big guys. I agree that we had way too many holes to fill last season but again we have a very good chance to make a big bang next season. But for that to happen Hendry got to go. We should get a very smart GM. Remember all the house cleaning Lou had to do at the start of the season? Otherwise we will be 'building on' forever.

My thoughts on the this TraveShaMockery of a game:
  1. Dear Kevin Hart, I like you, I really do.  But if you haven't noticed, they're not swinging at the breaking balls in the dirt.  Throw those with 2 strikes, not on 3-1 counts.
  2. Who's the leader in the clubhouse who gives the rousing speech followed by a slow clap followed by the Cubs finally fucking waking up and hitting?  I mean, this seems so scripted, maybe something from the movies will actually happen.
Keep the faith folks, no matter how dark it may be.  We all know the Cubs are playing like shit, don't think you're novel in pointing it out.

(And sorry for the profanity, but times like this necessitate it.)

lovable losers who might just win soon.

But they kept them just bad enough to do nothing in play offs so that potential buyers would still have the "Chicago Cubs the lovable Losers" but at the same time just competitive enough to get high market value for a competitive team.

This is exactly what they wanted to happen because it means they will get the most money back for the sale.

Dear Cubs, from a lifelong fan.
365 days, most people look at that as a year. Not to a Cubs fan; its a lifetime. With each passing day we wake up, throw on a Cubs hat, and head off to school, work, or wherever our day may take us. We sit in class, in work, or even in bed at night, and wonder what if? What if just one time, we got one chance, to do something special? We start getting nervous in the Spring, when our new hopes hatch and grow with the leaves on the trees. We get more nervous as the days get hotter, and the nights get long with each passing game. We build 6 months of our lives around one team, one game. Except, to us, its not a game. Its a life. Its the thing you hold onto so close to your heart, you can feel it in the dead of winter. Its the widest smile with every nail biting win, and the hole in your heart with every game given away. Yet into the fall, as the nerves grow, we still put on that hat, we put that hat on with pride, no matter where on the pole that Cubs flag hangs at Wrigley.  I sit here tonight, and think of my Grandfather who never had a chance to see that special moment. My Grandfather who died one Christmas Eve in a hospital wearing a Cubs shirt. I sit here in my basement, not let down, not upset, but hurt. Hurt to see the men we hold up so high, the men we scream and cheer for on the best of days, and the worst of nights take our hearts, and rip them out of our chests. I sit here today, with the same hope I had in May, that someday, these guys will FULLY understand what they're playing for. If ever there was as team that was playing for more than a city, its the Cubs. They're playing for hearts, souls, and for every tear that has fallen for the past century. To the Cubs, I ask you this: Where is your heart? Mine has always been with you, even  at times like this. Take a look around, we love you guys. We'd do anything for you guys. What do you do for us?
I would not fight Jason Kendall.

Im so upset right now
Im at a loss for words at this game, this series. Im frustrated, saddened and feel betrayed.

I love this team so damn much, yet this is what we have to deal with. This goes beyond the White Sox in 05 and the Cardinals in 06.

This is loyalty, this is like seeing your dog lying the the street after getting hit by a car, you hope and pray that he's going to get up, and walk away but instead he just lays there.

I'll admit this publicly I dont care, when the Cubs won the division, I had tears I was so proud, but this.... This is like a bad dream, this is 2003 all over again.

not nearly as bad as 03' for me
we are not 5 outs away from the WS, we are 3 wins away from just getting out of the first round.

by DC Cubbie on Oct 4, 2007 11:47 PM CDT up reply actions

nah.
this team was never that good. lou and co. did an incredible job getting the cubs out of the toilet and above .500. thanks to a lousy division, we even won the central.

i didn't expect them to win this series, the dbacks are just the kind of team that gives the cubs fits; however, i did expect the cubs to put up a fight and have a chance. they've been getting pretty much destroyed so far, and i haven't really felt like that were in either of these games. even when we had the lead, it didn't feel like we were going to hold it.

If it weren't the playoffs...
I'd sit Soriano, Lee, and Ramirez. They're swinging too often at awful pitches, looking like they belong in AA. If you're getting paid this much money, you should know what a god damn breaking ball looks like.

I'm trying to stay optimistic, I really am.

I have had about enough of Dick Stockton....
why can't they find a way to have alternate audio channels so we can listen to the Cubs broadcasters play by play (and the D-Back fans can listen to theirs)? Baloney.
There are 0-for-playoff performances, and then there is.... this.

Ramirez and Soriano and Lee have been horrific on a grand historical scale. I don't think I've ever seen three "star" players fail in, literally, ALL facets of the game simultaneously like this.

Lee's early error on the would-be DP, Lee and Aramis completely forgetting to cover the suicide squeeze despite the fact that the pitcher showed bunt 15 seconds before the pitch (!!!), and their comical, pathetic, utterly impotent performances at the plate deserve no excuses.

They should be embarrassed. I'm embarrassed for them. Lou should have yanked the Big 3 after the 4th inning - I can't believe that he's willing to watch them suck like this.

Leave the kid alone
I know you're just joking, but its enough already.  Does anyone know the name of the bozo that sat immediately next to him and also tried to catch the ball?  He's anonymous (and probably going to Cubs games) only because it was six inches out of his reach.  Bartman meanwhile has his whole life ruined.

And really, if Theriot had been at short instead of Alex Gonzalez, we would have turned two to get out of the inning.

by ClosingTime on Oct 5, 2007 12:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes.
The DBacks won 90 games.  They didn't do it with hitting, they did it with pitching.

The D-Backs are not only making our hitters look like fools, they're smacking our best pitchers around the yard. I don't even know what you're trying to say.

Telling a Cubs fan to stay positive while watching Aramis Ramirez hit into another double play and kill any hope this team may have had is simply ridiculous, and I think that you know it.

I'm not the one telling people to leave.
We're watching the Cubs demonstrate futility and impotence in the postseason in an absolutely legendary, record-breaking fashion.

Any commentary on this series is going to be, by its very nature, "negative". Lee, Soriano, and Ramirez have been insanely terrible. To ignore what is going on in front of your face is, frankly, idiocy. It's willful blindness, and I won't be party to it.

I pointed out that Aramis Ramirez is in legitimate danger of posting a .000 batting average in the postseason, immediately after he delivered a double play ball that he couldn't have rolled out there any better.

That doesn't warrant a "stuff it, leave" response. I'm not attacking any other posters, and I won't.

by ClosingTime on Oct 5, 2007 12:41 AM CDT up reply actions

no
you exercised a lot of sarcasm in suggesting that Aramis was going to be twice as worse to make up for Lee getting an unexpected hit.

Saying "boy, Aramis isn't playing well, I wonder what's wrong with him" isn't the same thing as what you said.

You are -expecting- them to lose.  A lot of people here seem to be doing that.

This is our time. THIS IS OUR YEAR!

by drewishdrewid on Oct 5, 2007 12:44 AM CDT up reply actions

You should stop while you're behind.
Sarcasm is a time-honored coping mechanism.

And for crying out loud, yes, when they're trailing by 4 in the 8th and playing as bad as they've ever played, I expect them to lose. So do you, even if you won't admit it.

We hope that they will come back, but to expect it is silly.

by ClosingTime on Oct 5, 2007 12:52 AM CDT up reply actions

This, by no means is
'record-breaking' or legendary. Have you just followed the team this year? 2003 is the penultimate. 5 outs from the World Series?
1984 -- 1 game from the World Series, and the Cubs can't finish.

This falls into the same category as the 4-1 1989 loss to SF in the NLCS and the 1998 3-0 loss in the Divisional Series to the Braves. There's nothing really special about losing those series. It's an ordinary playoff/post-season loss. Many teams have lost such series, and they are not at all memorable.

This is probably going to be a 3-0 sweep, and it's nothing extraordinary.

It's absolutely NOTHING record-breaking.

Consider Ramirez' performance.
He's running the risk of posting a .000 batting average, while stranding runners on base in darn near every single one of those AB.

At the moment, he's 0-9 with 4 K, at least 1 DP, and 8 runners LOB. He's flirting with some pretty negative records.

Lilly should have pitched much better and 4ER off of Davis is decent, but this lineup can do much better especially when the big hits came from Soto and Ward.

I have a good feeling about Hill vs. Hernandez... but that means squat right now.

We knew coming in that if Soriano, Lee, and Ramirez did nothing, we would lose.  Add on Marmol and Lilly, and all the key players besides Zambrano have not come through.

Lee and Ramirez just struck out on straight-as-a-string fastballs while they were sitting dead red on fastballs.

Today's game wasn't a "good attempt". It was a butt-kicking, in every sense of the word.

How does an MLB team allow a suicide squeeze when the batter shows bunt 10 seconds before the pitch?

As soon as the D-Backs hit the 3-run HR, the Cubs went to sleep. This was a disinterested, lethargic performance.
