Fukudome May Not Commit to U.S.
Via Ken Rosenthal: one of his sources says that Fukudome is considering staying in Japan, and is weighing offers from multiple Japanese teams.
He has met with the Chunichi Dragons, his current team, as well as the Tokyo Giants. He hasn't, so far as I know, talked to any MLB club. His decision will be known "after Thanksgiving," again from Rosenthal's source.
I'm not saying it won't happen, but it looks as though Fukudome is hardly a done deal for us. (Which people have been cautioning for a while now anyway.)
My personal fear is that whiffing on Fukudome would lead Hendry & Co. to pull a Juan Pierre and do something really stupid just to show that they did something. Ugh.

Yes
We await further developments......
Actually...
I hope you're correct.
I agree with this.
Remember, he could have come last year but that would have required the posting process. Maybe he didn't want to go through that, and knowing that he could come here as a complete free agent this offseason probably made him wait.
I think he's coming to the US, and I think he'll be a Cub, possibly as soon as next week.
I think he's coming

Just like
It was an attempt to create more leverage and Saito admitted it. (In fact, he was enrolling his kids in school in Southern California at the time.)
I suppose we could all be wrong, after all, Kuroda was a free agent last year and opted to stay in Japan. But Fukudome has been hinting about playing in the states for at least three years now (and maybe more). I'd put the odds of him coming to MLB this season at over 90%.
Yes, this could all be attempts at leverage.
I'm just starting to be uncomfortable with how much emphasis is put on Fukudome in the Cubs' offseason plans, and am having flashbacks to the Furcal/Pierre thing. And as much as you love Donaldson versus Mitre/Nolasco/Pinto, you have to factor in that year of suck we got from Pierre, too -- now, that was a Cubs team that probably wasn't competing anyways, so it didn't really matter.
Next year's Cubs team COULD compete, but it won't help efforts if we put some over-the-hill slugger out in right for $8 mil per. We just finally dumped our LAST mistake in the free-agency right fielder's market.
I think
Everyone seems to think we're the favorite for Fukudome and Hendry seems to be clearing outfield space for him. (Christina Kahrl at BP likes that Jones/Infante trade for us, by the way.) But we were the favorites for Furcal too, and look how that worked out.
However, if we don't get Fukudome, I'd be happy with an outfield of Soriano, Pie and Murton (or DeRosa, I guess). Don't think Hendry would though. At least Hendry seems to realize that OBP is a problem.

The Cubs really want to show the fans...
This is starting to worry me.
The one huge difference
The Cubs could make a trade for a piece like Fukudome if they had to.

The question(s) -
The next question, then, is wheter or not Fukudome wants to go to the team that offers the most money or if being in flyover country would be a serious problem for him.
But I'm convinced he's coming to the states and I think Hendry is in spend-what-it-takes mode.
Fwiw, I do think there are some decent non-Fukudome options, especially if you're willing to play Pie in RF for a year or two.
The thing with Furcal though
None of us know what Fukudome thinks of the Cubs or Chicago. I don't see Seattle, Boston or the Yankees as bidders, so that cuts out the three big choices for Japanese free agents.

Padres
Forget about San Diego.
The only way they get Fuku is if he accepts 1/3rd of what the Cubs are offering and even then the Pads would expect his old team in Japan to pay 2/3rds of that portion to take him "off their hands."
That's one cheap, bottom scavenging team.
Heck, that's what they're trying to do with Edmonds, now. They'll sign him if the Cards will also throw lots of money their way.
Fret not the Pads, they're bargain basement shoppers. It's Wal*Mart or bust for that team.

Furcal
Jim Hendry has shown over the last year that when he really wants a player he will go all out to get him. So If Fukudome decides to come to America I think the Cubs will get him. But he could possibly stay in Japan, because he doesn't wanna leave his country.
Options?
At that point, I see us jumping full on into the CF market - Andrew Jones (lefty bat, correcct?) would seem logical, with Pie/Murton forming a platoon in RF (which, coincidentally, would probably be good for both players).
That, or we plow the money into starting pitching, although I'm not sure anyone's worth it out there on the market.
Or we work a trade (feasible, but it'd mean giving up some pitching) to land a Carl Crawford type...
I still think we land the Domer...too big of a marketing opportunity for him and Japanese advertisers in one of America's largest markets, even if it doesn't have the Japanese population of San Francisco/Seattle...
Jones...

If Andruw is willing to sign a 1 yr deal...
However, before you all hit that Reply To This button, let me also say I am fully aware that:
- Scott Boras is his agent, ('nuff said), and
- Some team will throw a big multi-year contract (5/70) at him THIS offseason ('nuff said redux)
Guys, one team offered him 1/3M
Multiple Offers

Take this kind of language...
It's not appropriate here.
Thank you.
This guy has nothing left to prove
I think this is pure posturing, and I don't blame him for pulling out all the stops. Actually, I am more worried about another team scooping him up, as opposed to him deciding to stay in Japan.
