The Fukudome Vigil

We await developments, even as Kosuke Fukudome says he's going to play in the USA:
Wearing a Cub uniform, we hope (and light candles for). Paul Sullivan says a Fukudome signing could bring Japanese ad signage to Wrigley Field:
The Cubs recently announced they will increase the ad signage at Wrigley, and since more Cubs games will be televised in Japan if Fukudome signs, it makes sense that some of the ads will be in Japanese.
Gordon Wittenmyer: the Cubs could have him signed within 24 hours.
We're ready. Keep watching this space for more news later today.

Uh, more advertising...
What are their longterm advertising plans? In the end will Wrigley look like every other ML ballpark? (Shudder and gasp!)
Probably not, I'd guess...
Honestly, I would NOT have a problem with this, especially if they used part of such a board to put more information (stats, scores, etc.) than they can squeeze on to that little board below the main scoreboard.
Yuck!
Try watching a game in AZ
The ribbon won't be that bad if they do it tastefully. I imagine that if they take the boards they have today, extend them and use the same practice as today, it won't be that bad.
Sitting in the bleachers 20-30 times a season I got used to revolving ad behind the plate but then again its not lit and still 400+' away. The worst part of that is the green rectangle during national telecasts.
It will be interesting though to see a Japanese-based ad on the revolving board kind of like the "Z" ads we saw this past season.
Well as long as...
At least that's how I understand the landmark ruling for several aspects of the ball park; not the whole thing just parts.
I personally would like to know the errors.
The errors?
any sight lines,
any seating change that would require alteration of the light standards,
obstruction of view from the rooftop [partners],
any change to the bricks,
the basket as well as the ivy.
BTW, the scoreboard is not the original (but similar to it) and went up in 1937 along with the planting of the ivy. The clock was added in '38. The baskets appeared in '70.
I don't remember the article that had this but it wasn't a local newspaper. If I find it, I'll post it.

MLB splits its share evenly among all 30 teams.
The PA uses some of the proceeds to pay union expenses -- dues are only $7 per day -- and they distribute the remainder equally among players. It amounts to over $100,000 per player (for full year of ML service), though they cut the distribution in CBA years to create a strike fund.

Huh? Maybe he's an Asian Jacque Jones
Yet again we are getting our hopes up that (1)) this guy will be the difference maker and (2) lead us to the promised land.
Maybe.
But I fear we spent $2m (so far) and lost Will Ohman (not such a bad thing) for the opportunity to spend $12-15m for a little better arm in right field.
That post...
His attempt at statistical analysis is almost laughable. See this BCB diary for a far better discussion of what Fukudome might do as a major leaguer.
"Asian Jacque Jones"? Not hardly.
Ultimately he's not far off...
The question will be how well Fukudome's average will translate, because we can probably guess his power will not translate. If he's a .310-.320 hitter, he'll likely be an .850+ OPS guy. If he's a .280-.290 hitter, he'll likely be an .800 OPS guy.
slight title edit...
I think we'll see a ~.75 point AVG/OBP difference, and ~15 HR power. So if he's in the .280-.290 range, he's a LH hitting, better defensive version of Matt Murton. If he's in the .310-.320 range, he's a decent offensive upgrade.

platoon?
Defensively, will Fukudome be as good in RF as Jacque Jones? his arm almost has to be better by default but will he cover as much ground as Jones?
After Jones signed the 3/16 contract to platoon for the cubs he posted a .285/.334/.499 line. Does that seem to be a pretty reasonable projection for Fukudome?
Not quite.
Jones seems to have a perception as being a RF who had an enormous amount of range. Without checking his range factors, I never had that perception. Fukudome has to be better, almost by default.
I doubt he'd platoon, either. His Japanese splits don't seem to be available, but I can't see the Cubs spending as much as has been discussed on Fukudome, for a platoon outfielder. Plus, I hear Murton's on his way out.
Really? Murton's out?
I think we could see Murton in a platoon, but with Pie, not Fukudome. With a LH opposing starter, Murton will start in RF, with F-Bomb (I'll put my vote for this as his nickname) playing CF. Against RHP, Pie gets the start in CF with F-Bomb in RF.
Amending my earlier comment...
Of course that hinges on 2-3 substantial "ifs." The first (and not least significant) of which being the "if we get Fukudome."
by SouthernCub on Dec 11, 2007 10:10 AM CST up reply actions
Jones/Fukudome don't project similarly...
I'd expect a higher OBP (think .360-.380) and lower SLG (.430-.450), with both being contingent on his average. If he's a .280-.290 hitter, I'd guess .360ish OBP with .440ish SLG. If he's a .310-.320 hitter, I'd guess .380-.390 OBP and .460-.470 SLG.
As for the platoon, I'd expect Fukudome to be the everyday OF. The only platoon possibility I'd see would be Murton/Pie, with Fukudome playing CF when Murton plays.
you're right
bill james has jones for .332/.433, in a platoon role (call it 450 ABs), simple runs created: (obp x slg x abs) 65.
assume fukudome can play center field, is not platooned, and collects a full 600 ABs in a full time role. take your conservative estimate, .360/.430 and fukudome's runs created is: 93 runs.
call the defense a wash (i suspect jones is a better CF than fukudome)... and fukudome's worth 3 full wins over jones.
add 150 ABs of matt murton (.370/.470) to jacque jones, 65 runs + 26 runs = 91 runs created...
the jones/murton platoon would've cost the cubs 3 million dollars. replacing it with fukudome will cost, let's assume 15 million dollars.
that's extra 12 million dollars should buy (in free agent dollars) nearly an extra 3 wins... let's call it two for simplicity (also allows the extra millions to be an investment on the brand, which is certainly at play).
For an extra two wins over jones/murton you'd want fukudome to generate 125 runs...
in 600 ABs, for a high obp, low slugging type guy that's about a .410/.510 type season.
for 115 runs (1 win better than murton/jones) you'd need a .390/.490 type season.
Because of the high obp/low slg scenario those numbers are higher than they need to be.
if fukudome's a win better on defense, a .390/.470 season-- your optimistic projection-- makes him worth the dollars.
Fukudome will start in CF against lefties
by IllinoisCubs on Dec 11, 2007 10:42 AM CST up reply actions
re: Fukudome will start in CF against lefties
As my sig line indicates, I'd love to see the Cubs starting outfield to be Soriano in left, Pie in center and Fukudome (assuming he's indeed acquired) in right. But I won't be surprised in the least if Pie starts the year struggling at the plate, so I do like the idea of platooning Pie and Murton in right. This would take some of the pressure off Felix and give him a chance to work up his confidence against right-handed pitching. He could even still come in late in games as a defensive replacement in centerfield with Fukudome moving over to right (and, thus, gaining some experience in the position he'll, I hope, eventually play full time).
For this reason alone, I'd like to see the Cubs hang on to Murton until at least mid-season. Then perhaps he could be packaged into some sort of difference-making trade down the stretch toward the post-season. I'd be a little sad to see Murton go but, as has been pointed out ad infinitum, he doesn't appear to have a long-term place with the Cubs.
finally...
Anyways, these are the quality signings we need to make, also its exciting to know this will allow us to move forward in other areas no matter what happens with fuku. I agree with mrcubsfan, the three starters we have right now are nice but if were going to win it all, we need another stud pitcher. I would then feel like we have a complete team.
Negotiations
I have a question about the negotiation process. With agents (other than Boras), how honest do you think the agents are about the offers on the table? Do you think they are usually pretty honest about saying "Pads are offereing 3/42, can the Cubs beat that?"?

"Come on, baby don't you want to go...
To that new old place, Fuku-dome, Chicago!"
Not to rain on anyones parade, but....
Yes, I realize why we need to sign him, we need a LH RF, and there are really no other viable/attractive options out there in FA or in-house. I hope he proves me sooo wrong that I cant show my face around here again w/o KOW treatment, but I just cant see spending 12-15 million on a player that we really have no idea about. Yes, his stats indicate he can get on base, and well, but the small sample size of Japanese players before have indicated a drop in power (fences are closer to the plate in Japan) and He should be able to play defense.
But is he really going to be THAT much better than Murton would be if he were given the chance to play EVERY day for a year. Murton was really starting to show power late last year, he hit, I want to say three or four dingers, in about a week span, a couple of those were of the pich hit variety I believe. And Murton will be soo much cheaper, I know he's RH and his D is probably less than Fuk-y's, but that money could and maybe should be spent on a pitcher.
If you want to argue that Murton does not have the speed that Lou wants, realize that fuk-y really does not have that speed either, tho he probably is faster than Murton.
Realistically we are looking at a .280/.290 hitter that we hope can get us a OBP of .380-.400 and maybe hit 10-20 home runs, Murton gives you that at the least, maybe a lower OBP but 20-30 homers. and the crap about being all RH,man the pitcher also can not get settled in when he is getting pounded by hit after hit. Throwing a LH batter up there just to keep him from getting comfortable sounds good in theory, but getting hits for the same side of the plate works even better.
All that rambling and Yet I still think fuk-y would be a good addition to this team, just DONT break the bank for him, as report are suggestting the cubs are willing to do. It is not the end of the world if he plays for the Madres, We have the mirror image of him in Murton, IMHO!
by BigZ 4 Cy on Dec 11, 2007 10:11 AM CST reply actions
I agree with this mostly...
That said, Hendry and Piniella seem hell-bent on getting a LH bat in the OF, and adding better defense. Fukudome does provide both of those things, and is probably slightly faster than Murton (though not fast).
I think he'll be productive (just like I think Murton will be productive). I wouldn't break the bank for him, but he's better than the alternatives given that they are definitely going to replace Murton in RF.
And all that said, I hope I'm wrong and that Fukudome puts up an .850-.900 OPS over the next few years in a Cubs uniform.

Here's my worry...
I'm concerned that when he doesn't live up to unrealistic expectations that some have, that fans will treat him poorly, ala Jacque Jones.
I'm concerned that other Japanese players will see that and will shy away from signing with the Cubs in the future.
If Fukudome signs with the Cubs, it COULD be the start of a beautiful relationship with Japanese players. I just don't want that relationship to start off with the fans banishing Fukudome to the couch to sleep.
Can we temper our expectations?
I'm not hoping for another Bambino
by Jettero2112 on Dec 11, 2007 10:31 AM CST up reply actions
I think expecting Ruth is a bit of a stretch.
Seriously, though, my own excitement comes from the fact that, in a day or two, we can finally stop discussing whether or not he'll play for the Cubs. What I am genuinely excited about is the prospect of trading for Brian Roberts. Hopefully once all of this passes, JH will talk turkey with the O's.
OK, Ruth was a bit hyperbolic
Just dial it down and enjoy it when he, hopefully, puts up above average numbers and is a key cog in the Cubs' lineup.
OHH!! he saves...
Saving a couple puppies and the additional revenue from Japanese companies wanting to advertise inside of Wrigley will asuredly get us to the promised land where they hand out World Series rings. Lets do this Jimmy!!
by BigZ 4 Cy on Dec 11, 2007 1:42 PM CST up reply actions
OK, if those numbers hold up
I liked Matty a couple years ago and wanted to see him succeed. But with Alfonz entrenched in LF, Fukudome would be a far-better overall RF than Murton. I just don't think Murton can play RF as well as LF and lets face it, he's an average fielder (and this includes the throwing) at best.

The Murton-Fukudome comp
If you think Murton is a .296/.365/.455 hitter (his career numbers), recall that is essentially what Bobby Abreu did in 2007 and Keith Law has argued that Fukudome looks to be comparable to where Abreu is currently.
So, I think the best comparison for us is to say "Fukudome will be Abreu with better defense but less speed."
And for those who say projecting Fukudome is a complete crap shoot - I disagree. Not only can you run stats comparing both American players who went to Japan and Japanese players who came to America, you can also scout the guy. And the Cubs' scouts like what they see, quite a bit.
Slightly Off Topic: Kuroda Update
"Kuroda only wants a three-year deal, giving himself a chance to go back to Japan for the 2011 season if he chooses. According to Hickey, "Kuroda's final decision will be between the Dodgers and the Mariners." from MLBTR
I thought he almost signed with us last year, and at the last minute decided to stay back to take care of personal issues (ailing father was it?).
If this was the case, why are we not in the running for his services as well? No posting fee...
Interesting info on the 3-year deal. Most of the Japanese players have done this, but I thought it was to come over, get established, then land the big contract? Maybe Kuroda is too old for that (by the time the 3 years expires, he's 35 or so, right? That may be "past his prime"?).
In Fukudome's case, he would be 33, and likely at the prime-time of his career to land the big contract...
... this is another angle for them to have a choice to head back home, too.
well....

A quick look at baseball-reference.com shows the Padres have had very few players making $10 million/year or more but I don't have any good information about the length of current contracts or how much their current roster will be owed in the future. It looks like the Padres' most expensive players (in individual seasons) have been Maddux, Klesko, Giles (Brian, not Marcus), Nevin and one or two others. Of that group, it looks like Maddux is the only one the Padres have paid $10 million for a season. I think.
I ask that someone post good Padre contract information so that my shoddy research doesn't stand as the best encouragement while we wait and hope for good news.

Apparently it's because they have a curse too. IN 1985 after they won it all, some of their fans celebrated by throwing a Colonal Sanders statue from a KFC into a river and it is said that the Tigers will never win again, until the Statue is recovered. Also, the last time the Tigers played in the Japanese version of the World Series, all KFC's, put their statues of the Colonal inside.
The curse of the Colonal Sanders is alive and well in Japan.

When Hansin won, the fans called off all the names of every player on the team. Then, a person whom the crowd thought looked like that player had to jump into the river in his honor. I saw a couple weeks ago on one my my favorite TV shows, "Anthony Bourdain: No reservations" on the Travel Channel, he was in Osaka tasting all the different foods and experiencing all the different traditions of the culture involving Food and Wine and he attended a Hanshing Tiger game and it looked like a blast.
Looked like a giant party and was night and day from MLB (except a game in the bleachers at Wrigley, but the fans there actually watch the game). While their team was ab, they would hoot and holla and blow up balloons and launch them into the air and bang on their loud sticks, but only when their team was up and would quiet down out of respect for the other team, or something like that.

Why this is more than just a "signing"
Anyway, I am convinced that Hendry will not be outbid either due to the above, and, as an international marketing coup, it would be an incredible investment for the team. This is WAY more than signing a "guy with nice stats".

The Cubs are in the Fukudome market...
If the name sounds familiar, he was part of the 1989 NL East champions. Never really fulfilled the promise the team thought he had, but he did throw one terrific start in the heat of the '89 divisional race.
Yes, he's Korean.
The Padres may be desperate
3/30 is their offer. They just want to be able to say (as I have posted before) "Well, we tried. Damn big market team did it again. Here's Geoff Jenkins for you. Scott Hairston will cover CF and RF until Giles is back, since Cameron also went to a major market. Damn Cubs, damn Dodgers, Damn Giants." It's a refrain that has become a mantra for this organization. Jake Peavy is going to be their only major signing, and even he took less than what he originally asked for.
They couldn't lose a home-grown player, even though it might have been better to trade him for other needs. Peavy, I believe is the only pitcher they have ever signed to a 5-year deal.
No matter who signs Fukudome, this is still a no-lose. If Fukudome tanks, he'd be welcomed back with open arms. He could be sold back to a Japanese team.
by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Dec 11, 2007 1:27 PM CST reply actions
Hope you're right...
As for the "being sold back" thing, I doubt anyone will be paying $12-15 million per year to take him back. We'd be taking quite a chunk of change to dump him back to Japan if he bombs.
That said, I don't think he'll bomb. I don't think he'll be great, but I don't think he'll bomb either. I think he'll be a productive, ~.790-.820 hitter who plays a very good RF.
The Cubs OF situation is NOT bleak
As of now, the Pads have lost Bradley.
They haven't yet signed Cameron. (And, he will lose many games at the start of the season due to suspension, no matter who he signs with)
Giles will not open the season due to injury.
Geoff Jenkins hasn't yet signed, is probably fall-back if Fukudome goes to Chicago.
As of now, Scott Hairston is their only healthy, major league outfielder.
