Fukudome to decide today

According to Baseball Prospectus' Will Carroll during his chat this afternoon, Fukudome is going to decide today.  In Will's opinion, the front-runner is the Cubs.

It would be a nice way for the Cubs and Hendry to end the Winter Meetings.  I think Fukudome provides the Cubs exactly what they need -- a strong-armed RF with patience who can hit in the No. 2 hole.

Well
he is at the winter meetings interviewing people and running the rumor mill for BP.

But he's already admitted that someone fed him false information in Nashville (He reported that the Cabrera/Willis trade to Detroit was "dead.")  So I'd be looking for more confirmation that just this.

My wife is going to have our first baby in three to seven weeks.  All I can say is that waiting for Fukudome is like waiting for our daughter--he's going to sign when he's ready to sign, and all we can do is wait.

Pitocin
Let's not be so violent as a C-section.  We probably want to try Pitocin first.  That's the drug they administer to induce labor.  You get to learn these things.  :-)

Congrats Josh...
We just had our 1st on the 15th via c-section. The worst part was seeing a little blood and parts of my wife I never thought I'd see. Let neature take its course but no worries if you do need a c-section! Best of luck! Maybe you could name the baby Mini-Fuku? :)

They told us girl--I hope they are right, even if she'll never play for the Cubs.

Take what Will Carroll says...
and the opposite is true.  I've never seen anyone be as wrong as that man as often as he is.  He's gotten too big for what he does and no longer does it well.  He does it terribly.  Such a disappointment to be honest.

Wow...
... looks like the stuff we post here. Carroll's credibility has sunk in recent years. I'm skeptical.

A couple of things at work here.

  • Most of the time, these teams don't even know what's going on. They're still weighing their options; they change their minds.
  • Close deals can fall apart, talks can go nowhere. Not every trade that's negotiated goes through. Teams can put together contracts and players at the last minute can pull out.
  • Thanks to the Internet and ESPN and a change in the way fan bases view these things, we're drinking from the fire hose here, kids. Instead of playing "wait and see," news outlets are just letting every slip of information they get their hands on out.

So everything needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Now, personally, I find this a lot more fun and exciting than responsible, file-one-dispatch-per-day journalism (although the daily papers are still the best sources of Cubs news and rumors I've yet found, and all of our beat writers are fine folks). But we're supposed to understand -- in exchange for unprecidented access to these sorts of events -- that the news outlets aren't sourcing and verifying these things.

Doesn't have to be the Cubs
I want Fukodome, but it could be another team jumping in. Lots of teams are probably underwhelmed with Andruw Jones or Aaron Rowand for five years when looking for outfield help.  I have been shocked the Giants and Dodgers aren't out there for him.  Maybe one of those two teams threw in an offer. They both have money to spend.  Asian players might be more attracted to a West coast team with the more diverse population, and being slightly closer to home.

by Nibbles on Dec 5, 2007 3:47 PM CST reply actions

yeah
this may not be a good thing, this may mean exactly what you suggest, that another team came in with an offer as high, or higher than the cubs.  hopefully we have something good or bad to talk about tonight/tomorrow, id just like this whole waiting for the fukster chapter to end.

Agreed
They are whittling away at the process, can't see them coming to a final decision all the sudden.  Maybe he's seen enough MLB offers to realize he's not going back to Japan and that's all thats going on today?

Over in Bruce Miles Answers Diary
he says that this Fukudome signing could happen fast.  We'll see.

by DGU on Dec 5, 2007 4:02 PM CST up reply actions

That's not the impression
the text of his chat gave me. I also think that given the way the Cubs have handled things so far and so out in the open, they will be given a chance to beat any offer that the Red Sox or Dodgers or any other surprise team might give unless Fukudome preferred one of those teams all along.

Don't wait up for Fukudome; WC retracts
From BP: "Kosuke Fukudome is evidently going to wait until next week to visit teams in person,"

He also says the Cubs are "simmering" on a # of fronts, looking at Brian Roberts and for a centerfielder.  He then explains why he sometimes mistranslates "close" to "done."  (C'mon, Will, we know why; it's because everyone wants the scoop.)

As for the centerfielder bit, my guess is that McPhail asked for Pie in either a Roberts deal or a Bedard deal.  I'm for playing Pie, but if you can get Bedard, then trade Pie and someone else can play centerfield.  Bedard will improve the team more than Pie will.

I would not trade Pie straight up for Roberts, and I am a huge Brian Roberts fan.  It would give be a great deal of pleasure to be able to root for Roberts as a Cub.  But Roberts has two years left on his contract and Pie is just getting started.

All I am saying is give Pie a chance!

More News on Fukudome
"Hendry had no news on free agent Kosuke Fukudome, and said he had not spoken to his agent Wednesday. Most expect the Japanese outfielder to declare his intentions to play in the United States within the next few days. The Cubs are considered the front-runners to reel him in."

Also, most of the discussion is on Dempster.

WHAT WHAT WHAT?
Check out the last line of that article -- "Hendry is likely to select a player in Thursday's Rule 5 draft of minor-leaguers."

Unless this is another arrangement like Josh Hamilton last year -- where we selected for another team -- this is absurdly intriguing to me. And our draft position is likely to suck this year, comparably to last year, so I don't know that any other team would use us for that purpose.

roberts and fukudome
I would be very pleased with our offseason if we were able to get these guys. I was strongly against signing Kaz because I didn't think it would have been a true step forward in building this team.  These two players are the types of signings that would make the Cubs a complete team.

If we were able to sign Roberts and Fukudome, the only other area in my small baseball mind I think we need it another top-notch starter.  I then would feel we would be a legitimate contender.  I know were not going to be able to sign one this off season...Mark Prior for the love of God please revert back to old form.

agreed!
yes,i think k-fuk and roberts would be huge and why not give pie a shot?the guy has too much talent to not give him a shot.also,i would keep hill and most def. go after another starter.marquis is only good for half a year and prior is a question mark.

The link below atates the Cubs are willing to go 12-15 mil a year, and they expect a decision tonight or in the morning. Pads are in this pretty heavy as well it appears.
