Fukudome to decide today
According to Baseball Prospectus' Will Carroll during his chat this afternoon, Fukudome is going to decide today. In Will's opinion, the front-runner is the Cubs.
It would be a nice way for the Cubs and Hendry to end the Winter Meetings. I think Fukudome provides the Cubs exactly what they need -- a strong-armed RF with patience who can hit in the No. 2 hole.

How on Earth would Will Carroll know?
Well
But he's already admitted that someone fed him false information in Nashville (He reported that the Cabrera/Willis trade to Detroit was "dead.") So I'd be looking for more confirmation that just this.
My wife is going to have our first baby in three to seven weeks. All I can say is that waiting for Fukudome is like waiting for our daughter--he's going to sign when he's ready to sign, and all we can do is wait.
Is there such a thing
Post of the week!
Pitocin
Congrats Josh...
Congrats too
They told us girl--I hope they are right, even if she'll never play for the Cubs.
Take what Will Carroll says...
I dont believe
"Bruce Miles suggests......."
Suggest and opinion are nothing to me
This is the actual text:
Wow...
It should be noted
A couple of things at work here.
- Most of the time, these teams don't even know what's going on. They're still weighing their options; they change their minds.
- Close deals can fall apart, talks can go nowhere. Not every trade that's negotiated goes through. Teams can put together contracts and players at the last minute can pull out.
- Thanks to the Internet and ESPN and a change in the way fan bases view these things, we're drinking from the fire hose here, kids. Instead of playing "wait and see," news outlets are just letting every slip of information they get their hands on out.
So everything needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Now, personally, I find this a lot more fun and exciting than responsible, file-one-dispatch-per-day journalism (although the daily papers are still the best sources of Cubs news and rumors I've yet found, and all of our beat writers are fine folks). But we're supposed to understand -- in exchange for unprecidented access to these sorts of events -- that the news outlets aren't sourcing and verifying these things.
I dunno
Someone has to break the story..
Doesn't have to be the Cubs
yeah
It may be....

I think I'll head on down to the
You're in Nashville?
I can't wait! They can now work
Don't wait up for Fukudome; WC retracts
He also says the Cubs are "simmering" on a # of fronts, looking at Brian Roberts and for a centerfielder. He then explains why he sometimes mistranslates "close" to "done." (C'mon, Will, we know why; it's because everyone wants the scoop.)
As for the centerfielder bit, my guess is that McPhail asked for Pie in either a Roberts deal or a Bedard deal. I'm for playing Pie, but if you can get Bedard, then trade Pie and someone else can play centerfield. Bedard will improve the team more than Pie will.
I would not trade Pie straight up for Roberts, and I am a huge Brian Roberts fan. It would give be a great deal of pleasure to be able to root for Roberts as a Cub. But Roberts has two years left on his contract and Pie is just getting started.
Fukudome signs today??????????????
Please see my post in the other Fukudome diary.
Any signing is not imminent.

well, buster olney just said on baseball tonight
and he says the cubs are thought to have the biggest offer on the table.
More News on Fukudome
Also, most of the discussion is on Dempster.
WHAT WHAT WHAT?
Unless this is another arrangement like Josh Hamilton last year -- where we selected for another team -- this is absurdly intriguing to me. And our draft position is likely to suck this year, comparably to last year, so I don't know that any other team would use us for that purpose.
roberts and fukudome
If we were able to sign Roberts and Fukudome, the only other area in my small baseball mind I think we need it another top-notch starter. I then would feel we would be a legitimate contender. I know were not going to be able to sign one this off season...Mark Prior for the love of God please revert back to old form.
agreed!
