The Top 100 Cubs Of All Time - #16 Mark Grace

Well, come on, now. Who did you THINK was going to write this profile?

Profile by BCB reader cubbiejulie

Standing in line at the Cubs Convention, I became instantly mortified upon realizing that it was hot, really hot, in the room. Even though I was wearing short sleeves, I started to panic. Was I sweating? Was my mascara going to run? My eyeliner smudge? Were my curls going to (gasp!) droop? I whipped out my mirror and gave myself the once-over. Everything still seemed okay, except that I needed more lipgloss, stat. Okay, that's better. Satisfied that I didn't look like Phyllis Diller on a bad day, I put my compact away. Suddenly, I was ashamed. What was I doing, touching up my makeup at a baseball convention? I was in line for an autograph, for crying out loud, not at a kissing booth. I sheepishly looked around, hoping no one saw me, especially none of the BCB guys. Gawd, I'd never live it down. It was then that I realized that 75% of the line behind me was made up of women, and they were all doing exactly the same thing.

If you were a bobbysoxer in the 1940s, chances are you went gaga for Ol' Blue Eyes. If you grew up in the 1950s, you swooned over Elvis and his hips. In the 1960s, girls fainted at the mere mention of John, Paul, and the rest of the Fab Four. And if you were a young female Cubs fan in the late 1980s and 1990s, you went weak at the knees and listened to sappy love songs over Mark Grace. There really was no helping it; we were all in the same boat. I suppose it was inevitable; green eyes, blond hair, and a smile that could light up a room while still suggesting that there was something more mischevious at work underneath was a deadly combination for most of us. I kissed my poster of him goodnight so many times that his head eventually fell off (because, you see, his head on the poster was smaller than my lips and ... oh, nevermind).

Born on June 28, 1964 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina (ha! I didn't have to look it up! I still remember it!) Mark was the second son of Gene and Sharon Grace. As a youngster, Mark and his family moved 13 times in 25 years.  Mark has sometimes been referred to as "a phony", with disgruntled former teammates and Cubs front office staff commenting that he can turn his outgoing, happy-go-lucky personality off and on like a lamp. I think the constant moving around that Mark did as a child almost certainly accounts for a large part of this. Perhaps when you move from school to school and town to town as often as Mark did, on average more than once every two years, you learn to dispense with the shyness pretty quickly.

After living briefly in St. Louis, where Mark became (shudder) a Cardinals fan and idolized Redbirds' first baseman Keith Hernandez, the Graces moved to Southern California. Mark attended Tustin High School near Los Angeles, where he played both varsity baseball and basketball. He moved on to Saddleback Junior College where he was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 15th round of the 1984 draft at the end of his sophomore year. For whatever reason, call it fate, call it luck, call it karma, Mark declined to sign with the Twins and transferred to San Diego State University.

It was at San Diego State that Mark finally started to make his ... uh ... "mark" on baseball. In his first year as an Aztec, he hit .395 and had a .465 OBP, leading the team in average, runs, hits, total bases, doubles, triples, sac flies, RBIs, and game-winning RBIs. Despite a year in which he set the Western Athletic Conference on fire, the scouts weren't willing to take a chance on a player who had refused to sign the previous year, and Mark fell to the 24th round of the June, 1985 draft. I don't know who it was in the Cubs organization that decided to give Mark a shot, but I'm certain that he has the undying gratitude of the female portion of Cubs Nation and probably reserved seating in heaven somewhere near the right hand of the Father.

It was in a game against my Beloit Brewers in 1986 or so that I got my first look at Mark and was instantly smitten. I spent the rest of the game trying to catch a glimpse of him in the dugout and highlighting all the remaining Peoria/Beloit games on my pocket schedule. Unfortunately for me, Mark didn't last long in A ball and was soon playing AA ball at Pittsfield, where he finished the 1987 season with a .333 average and a slugging percentage of .545. My access to my new-found love suddenly restricted, there was nothing more to do than wait and hope and pray that his stint in the minors was a short one. And it was. After being promoted to AAA in 1988, Mark played only 21 games for Iowa before he was called up to the majors.

Mark played his first game for the Chicago Cubs on May 2, 1988, where he promptly went two for five (batting seventh, and wearing uniform #28, rather than the #17 which later became so familiar) and collected the first of many multi-hit games against San Diego. Mark was inserted into the lineup again the next day, where he scored three runs and recorded his first walk and first extra-base hit. The following day, May 4, Mark hit his first major league homerun off Keith Comstock. Within three weeks of Mark's being called up, the Cubs traded fan favorite Leon Durham and Mark was handed the job as the starting first baseman. Mark would finish the year with a .296 average and second to (Mr. Whatever Happened To?) Chris Sabo in NL Rookie of the Year balloting. I remember being really mad about this, as Chris Sabo was so, so much uglier than our angelic Mark, who looked like Apollo next to Sabo and his stupid Rec Specs. Luckily for sportswriters everywhere, Mark was named Rookie of the Year by the Sporting News, or I would have been forced to lay some teenage smack down all around.

I was lucky enough to be able to sit in on the "Boys of Zimmer" panel at the convention this year, and it reminded me what a special year 1989 was. The panel consisted of Mark, Jerome Walton, Dwight Smith, Mike Bielecki, Les Lancaster, Ryno, and Doug Dascenzo. While they all had great tales to tell, Mark stole the spotlight with his beautifully-crafted stories, gentle ribbing of his teammates, and hilariously honest statements, such as "Mitch Williams wasn't ... all that bright. In fact, he wasn't very bright at all." Mark reiterated was how tight that team was; that when one player went out, the rest of the ball club went with him, the way Don Zimmer ruled with an iron fist, often resorting to the manager version of the parental refrain "because I said so": "Because I'm the manager!" Mark once marched into Zimmer's office and asked why he wasn't in the lineup. Zimmer's reply? "Son, because I'm trying to win out there."

But I digress. In 1989 Mark played a key role in the Cubs' Eastern Division championship season, no easy task in a lineup that included Ryne Sandberg and Andre Dawson. That season, Mark hit .314, finished with an OBP of .405, and committed only 6 errors (which is all the more impressive when you remember that Shawon "Just Throw It As Hard As You Can In The General Direction Of First Base" Dunston was throwing to him). The "Sandberg to Dunston to Grace" double-play combo was a giant killer that year, and I know I'm not the only Cubs fan to be grateful that we had Grace and Sandberg to balance out Dunston and his uncanny knack for throwing the ball into the opposing team's dugout. The Cubs ran away with the division that year, finishing with a 93-69 record.

If Mark was great during the 1989 regular season, he was spectacular in the NLCS, where the media played up the Mark "Amazing" Grace vs. Will "The Thrill" Clark angle. All Cubs fans remember the epic Game One battle between Mark and Scott Garrelts of the Giants. Mark fouled off something like 13 pitches and ran the count to 3-2 before knocking one into the bleachers to score Sandberg. I still remember Vin Scully's single comment after listening silently to the crowd at Wrigley going nuts for a good one to two minutes: "Boy, he is amazing." It's too painful to go into how that playoff series ended for the Cubs, so let's just talk about Mark's performance, which was nothing short of brilliant. He went 11 for 17, had a .647 average for the series, with 5 extra-base hits and 8 RBIs. There were a lot of Cubs players who didn't really show up for that series (cough! Dawson! cough!), but Mark Grace wasn't one of them.

After the memorable '89 team, Mark went on to play for a whole lot of forgettable Cubs teams. Even with Sammy Sosa joining the team in 1992, the Cubs in the 1990s went on a dismal slide that included EIGHT YEARS of never fishing above .500. Through it all, Mark never complained publicly, never asked for a trade, and always maintained that he wanted to play his entire career with the Cubs. In six of those eight seasons, Mark hit over .300. He won four Gold Gloves. He represented the Cubs in the All-Star Game three times. In 1996, Mark batted .326, hit 51 doubles (leading the NL), and finished 13th in NL MVP voting.

The Cubs would return to the playoffs in 1998, in large part due to Sammy's bat and Mark's veteran leadership. After a one-game playoff with the Giants due to identical regular-season records, wherein Mark had two hits and a walk -- and caught Joe Carter's foul popup for the last out, the only time the Cubs have won a winner-take-all game at Wrigley Field -- the Cubs limped through a lackluster NLDS against the Braves, getting swept.

By the end of the 2000 season, Mark's relationship with the Cubs' front office was starting to sour. Though he always maintained that he wanted to finish his career with the Cubs, the front office began to let it be known to the media that they were tired of Mark's constant bickering with their emerging superstar, Sammy Sosa, and complained that his pack-a-day smoking habits and late nights carousing at Yak-zies, The Cubby Bear, and Hi-Tops were a bad influence on young players like Kerry Wood and Kyle Farnsworth. Following the 2000 season, the Cubs let it be known that they would not be offering Mark a contract for the following year and, by all accounts, never even made a phone call to him or his agent. After 13 years with the Cubs, during which time his average never dipped below .273 or his OBP below .346, Mark Grace was kicked out the back door without so much as a "thank you." I and many other Cubs fans will never forgive Andy McPhail for that.

We know the rest of the story. Mark went on to play for the Diamondbacks in 2001. Of course, there was the infamous "slumpbuster" comment. And of course, he helped the Diamondbacks win the 2001 World Series, starting the winning rally with a single in the ninth inning of Game Seven. Immediately following the game, Mark made the comment, "What I really feel good about is I wasn't good enough to play first base for the Chicago Cubs, but I was good enough to play first base for the World Champions, and that feels really good." Ouch, Mark. That hurt.

Mark had one more signature moment with the Diamondbacks. In perhaps the funniest single incident of the 2002 season, Mark pitched the 9th inning of a 19-1 loss to the Dodgers on September 2. After getting the first two men out, he served up a 69-mph "'fastball" to rookie David Ross, which was promptly relocated to the right field bleachers.

Now twice divorced with two little boys, Mark lives in Paradise Valley, Arizona, where he works as a color commentator for the Diamondbacks during the season and, as is required of all retired sports stars, spends the rest of the year on the golf course. And yes, it's true, his broadcasting leaves a lot to be desired. After listening to him at the Cubs Convention this year, where he was so engaging and funny and had the audience rolling in the aisles, I can't help but think that, if he could bring more of that into his broadcasting, he could be something pretty special someday.

What goes around comes around, and if what Mark Grace gave to Cubs fans was 13 years of loyal devotion, it came back to him in spades at the Cubs convention this year. After appearing at Wrigley on August 3, 2006, to sing a really horrible rendition of "Take Me Out to The Ballgame," to the absolute delight of the crowd, Mark returned to Cubs Nation this off-season. While everyone knew he was going to get a big reaction from the throngs of adoring fans, I don't think even he was prepared for the outpouring of love that awaited him. Every panel he spoke at was interrupted by yells of "We love you Gracie!" every few minutes. He got enormous ovations everywhere he went. The line for his photo booth started forming 3 hours before he arrived. And, by all appearances, his teammates were as happy to see him as the fans were. I was lucky enough to be positioned in just the right spot to see a fierce bear hug between him and Ryno when the two met behind the autograph stage.

And, in my favorite moment of the 2007 Cubs Convention, when I finally made it up to the dais to get my autograph, curls bouncy, mascara looking good, lipgloss firmly in place, I told him we were happy he was back, and he looked up me, with the green eyes that can still make my heart do somersaults, and said, "You know what? It's really great to come home."

Nice work, Julie..
..I really enjoyed reading this bio.  Didn't Gracie have the most hits of any player for the decade of the 90s?
Chicks dig the long ball

by Will23 on Feb 3, 2007 8:28 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

That is correct. Most hits in the 90s.
Even Tony Gywnn couldn't pull that off. That is probably one of the main reasons Grace is ranked this high.

Grace's Cub rankings
OBA: 8th
Games played: 9th
At-bats: 7th
Runs: 9th
Hits: 5th
Total bases: 7th
Doubles: 2nd (only Anson had more)
RBI: 8th (yes, over 1000 Cub RBI)
Walks: 8th
Singles: 6th
XBH: 8th

I'm thinking that justifies this ranking.

Ranking
I suppose I'm OK with the ranking, looking at those stats. Maybe now the anti-Grace crowd will finally stop squawking about what a bum he was.

Thanks
I really enjoyed it, and the memories it brought. I remember one game in 1989, sitting a few rows behind first base with my girlfriend, and her spending the whole game talking about how cute Grace's butt looked.

I always felt Grace brought a winning attitude to the Cubs. He was a professional hitter, a great first baseman and fun to have on the team. I wish things had ended differently and he could have played here his entire career.

Nice job julie
Grace was ....well Grace, always hitting a double in there in any game, never hitting for power when we could have used some power at first. That's the only knock I have on the guy.Yes, led the majors in hits for the 90's.

Spring training at Steve and Harry's bar after a game my family and I happen to sit at a table by Grace, his parents and a couple of other guys. Not trying to be stupid and stare, we sat there for over an hour catching glimpses of him pounding Coors light and telling stories with his family. I'll never forget this....with my son sitting with his back to Grace's dad....his dad stood up and scratched and dug his crack for like 2 minutes. I was just like man, get your hand out of your butt crack or you'll hit my kid in the back of the head the way he was digging. I know, no one wanted to hear that story, but that is my personal memory of Mark Grace and I can't to this day get that picture out of my head.

Revisionist History
Clearly you are a Grace fan and don't like MacPhail, but your description of how MacPhail "kicked Grace out the door" is not at all accurate. This something that Barry Rozner confirmed a few weeks ago on WSCR, when it was announced that Grace would be attending the Cubs convention. Be mad at MacPhail if you think he made a mistake choosing Hee Seop Choi over Mark Grace. MacPhail knew Grace wanted to remain a full time player. He let Grace and his agent that the Cubs were going in a different direction, and if Grace wanted to remain a full time player, it wasn't going to be for the Cubs.

But then again some fans want to blame MacPhail for everything from the war in Iraq to global warming.

I hope you weren't implying that.

by Faith plus 1 on Feb 3, 2007 2:38 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Nope...
... and MacPhail would be the first person to admit that he made lots of mistakes during his Cubs tenure. But people need to realize that he is the man who is responsible for totally changing the Cubs franchise. People tend to forget what things were like under people like Larry Himes, Stanton Cook, Don Grenesko and Jim Frey. Again, I go back to Barry Rozner's interview with Mike Murphy, who absolutely abhores MacPhail. Rozner was the Cubs beat guy when MacPhail came on board and said that while MacPhail made many mistakes, the entire organization was amateur hour when he arrived. MacPhail turned the organization around and made it into a professional organization.

IMO MacPhail's largest failure was letting Ed Lynch stick around as long as he did, but people need to realize that MacPhail was president during all of his tenure and spent a relatively short time as GM. He played a role with baseball operations, but in reality it was Hendry's baby and MacPhail, IMO, ended up getting the blame for Dusty's ineptitude and Hendry's mistakes over the last two plus years. The president's job is much more than the team on the field. Some of these things MacPhail did well, others he did not.

I will end on this though. MacPhail strongly believed in signing players to contracts that gave the team flexibility. He didn't want to be cornered into a bad long term deal that would weigh on the team for several seasons. If Marquis, Lilly, Soriano et al do not work out, Cub fans will be begging for the type of leadership in the Cubs front office that went out the door once MacPhail left and Hendry started spending like he was an adolescent girl on "My Super Sweet Sixteen".

And thats fine...
... but it was a baseball decision, and one that teams make all the time. Baseball is business and Grace got let go by the Cubs. Even at the time I was surprised how open and honest the Cubs were that Grace was not going to be a starter in Chicago. I'm not sure what else you can ask than for them to be honest and allow you to move on if you wish to remain a starter.

Bad decision? Perhaps. I wish people would focus on that.

I wasn't privy
to the negotiations and payroll, etc.. at the end of 2000, but why did they let him go? His stats didn't really indicate a decline- .280/.394/.429

His BA slipped a bit but so what. Still consistently good. 41 doubles, 95 walks w/only 28 Ks. Seems like an ideal #2 hitter. His numbers with runners on were still very good. Was it solely the bickering and off-the-field stuff? Was he that bad of a clubhouse cancer? They should have brought in other players around him- as they ought to have all the other years. They didn't get McGriff until mid-season 2001, which turned out well for a short time. Did they expect McGriff to come earlier? I recall that he didn't wanna come but was finally talked into it shortly before the AS break. Who started 2001 at 1B? Please enlighten for those of us who weren't hanging out in the clubhouse or the bars, and i don't mean to be adversarial. just want to get as many facts as I can.

Grace's Departure
The Cubs had Hee Seop Choi waiting in the wings and felt that Hee Seop Choi was ready to be phased in as the Cubs first baseman. During the 2000 season it had been mentioned and Grace was vocal about the fact that he had little desire to help groom a young first baseman to succeed him. The Cubs had hoped that Choi would start to get some real playing time in the majors in 2001 and let Grace's reps know that this was their intention. Grace wanted to remain a full time starter. The Cubs wanted to start giving some playing time to Choi. I'm not sure if the Cubs offered Grace a contract or not or if they discussed with him the possibility of splitting time with Choi. Choi didn't end up playing with the Cubs in 2001, instead seeing Matt Stairs and Fred McGriff at first base.

My Grace Story
I went to Saddleback Junior College in Mission Viejo as well, but from 1976 to 1978. On my honeymoon in August of 1999, my wife and I took a cruise that stopped in San Diego. We had lunch in a seaside restaurant and sitting at an outdoor table, chain smoking, was Mark Grace. He was with an attractive brunette who looked easily ten years younger than him. I pointed him out to my new wife and told her we both attended Saddleback. Since he was on his own time, it was my intention not to bother him. We had to walk by Grace's table on the way out. My wife, not shy at all, thinking she was doing me some huge favor, stopped at Grace's table, told him I was a Cubs fan who also went to Saddleback, and oh, wasn't it nice to see him here WITH HIS WIFE while we were on our honeymoon. I was as red faced as could be, not just for the sudden intrusion, but it was plainly obvious this girl wasn't his wife. He wasn't married at the time, but my wife, newly married, was in a frame of mind where everyone must be, if she now was. I apologized for bothering them, Grace was nice enough about it, but the girl, who from looking at pictures could have eventually become Mrs. Grace II, was NOT amused.

Here's a link, btw, which is an unofficial Mark Grace site with pictures of the two wives.

I can't stand Mark Grace.
He's undoubtedly my least favorite baseball player to have ever played this game.  Whether it's the fact he was ridiculously overrated, a selfish bastard, or that he was never even close to as good as who the Cubs could have had playing 1st base all those years, or those hall of fame discussions where people say he's worthy...I can't stand him.  I thought it was a sad day in Cubs history when he and the Cubs management made up.

by Maddog on Feb 3, 2007 9:43 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Really.
There's no question that I agree that Grace isn't a Hall of Famer. However, he was a solid everyday player for more than a decade, hit .303 lifetime, and was an outstanding defensive first baseman.

Just because he doesn't live up to some artificial statistical standard of first basemen being power hitters that you may have, Maddog, doesn't mean he was a bad player. In fact, he was a very good player. I always expected him to have just one HOF-quality season, where he'd have hit .350 and won a batting title, or led the league in something other than doubles. It never happened, though.

Yup
Ridicuously overrated? Please. The guy had more hits than anyone in the 1990's. That stat alone refutes such a criticism. He had a very good career by any standard. HOF? No, but it isn't an unreasonable conversation to have, either, given the totality of his career. Methinks Maddog carries some sort of bias of a personal nature, which in and of itself is his choice, but don't expect anyone to take the rest of that post seriously.

Bias?
Well, some people also have an unadorned love for Grace that makes them think that he is the end all, be all. Grace knew how to work the media and got tremendous coverage by the local columnist. Grace minus the persona is John Olerud.

by dmlichte on Feb 3, 2007 10:16 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

And??????
Neither Olerud or Grace is a HOFer, but both have had nice careers. Most would acknowledge this. So what's your point?
Santo Forever!

by BeerCub on Feb 3, 2007 10:24 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

My point...
... is that Grace is put on a pedistal while Olerud is acknowledged as a really solid baseball player. No one has ever said that Olerud deserves HoF consideration, however his career OBP and OPS are higher than Grace's. Grace did a great job buddying up with the media. My point... people overrate Grace in this town.

I have no major problem with Grace. I liked him when he was here. I believe his behavior after he left was rather infantile. I'm fine with him having a relationship with the Cubs, but I hope they don't entertain any thoughts of bringing him back as an announcer.

by dmlichte on Feb 3, 2007 10:35 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Your point is taken.
Frankly, if Grace wants to stay in baseball -- and clearly, he does -- he ought to get into coaching or managing.

He could take a lesson from Ryne Sandberg, who is going to go back to riding the buses in Low-A to pay his managerial dues. If Grace would do this, he could be a major league coach or manager in a very short time. And I think he'd make a good one.

Further:
Grace's career line: .303/.383/.442

Olerud's career line: .295/.398/.465

Not a whole lot of difference there. They show up as #3 on each other's 'most similar hitter' list on their baseball-reference.com pages.

homers
And I'm sick of the people on this site who keep taking Grace to task for his lack of power. The guy had over 1,000 RBI, so he did find a way to drive in runs, even if it didn't always mean putting the ball onto Sheffield. Younger fans these days, who grew up in the late-90s and early 2000s, when every Brady Anderson and Raffy Palmeiro was launching 50 homers s year, put way too much emphasis on the long ball.

No, I don't.
Homeruns are great, but I don't bash players like Murton for his lack of power.  I believe in having power overall as a team and as the disliked Ozzie Guillen once said, "I'd rather have many players hit 20+ homeruns than 1 or 2 who hit 40." Or something like that.  If you have power at other positions, then the usual power positions don't necessarily need to have power.

I used to think I was a fan of homeruns, but I'm a fan of pitching.

Absolutely.
That doesn't detract from the work of the piece, which is very, very good.

However, if you fall for the "It's good to be home again" line be wary.

Mark Grace does what's best for him. And, to snuggle up to what has always been an adoring crowd is what he has to do. He can go much farther, career-wise in Chicago, than in Phoenix.

He insulted all Cubs fans when he was in Phoenix.
As I said earlier, his target was probably McPhail. However, rubbing his World Series Championship in OUR faces was distasteful, and displayed a nasty side of him -- which he usually kept hidden, (from the fans) I'm going to assume.

The Cubs made a business decision. Players do this all the time, they bolt and we are left holding the bag. (Greg Maddux's departure for Atlanta would be an example, even when it was eventually revealed the Cubs offered him as much than the Braves)

Grace is on the other end of the stick for the first time, and his ego is crushed. Too frickin' bad. So, when he wins -- he acts like a spoiled brat.

But it's a business deal again. The Cubs get access to one of their most popular players, Grace may be able to get back to the nation's 3rd market and somehow, eventually worm his way into a Cubs job, eventually.

And, since we know he hated Sammy Sosa, this is even sweeter for him. Sosa is persona non grata -- but Gracie is soaking up affection from Cubs fans....again. Sammy's an outcast, and probably will be for years.  This is so calculated, so cynical on Grace's part I cannot believe only a few people can see this.

But he's good ol Mark Grace. Maybe he'll buy us a round at Hi-Tops.

Works for both sides. But not for me.

I don't understand...
You have stated more than once that you assume all players, including Derek Lee, Kerry Wood and Albert Pujols (not specifically, but you time and again said ALL pro athletes) are wife beaters who also cheat on their wives, do steroids and any other illegal substances to get an edge and are all jerks.

You said you assume these things about all ballplayers.

You have also advocated bringing Barry Bonds to the Cubs.

But yet you hate him, more than any other player. And it boils down to two things: a) he was a jerk (but you assume everyone is, right?) and b) he wasn't as good as others think.

Coming from someone who is so analytical and logical, I seriously don't understand it.

In 1998 I was watching the Cubs board their bus behined a fence at Chavez Ravine after a Dodgers game. I'll never forget this LA plastic blond wearing FUR, calling out "Hey tough guy!" once or twice in Grace's direction but he didn't notice as he boarded. Her and her friend split. It was a simple fix to the relationship.
Once Andy MacFailure was gone, all was well.  I don't think Mark had an ax to grind with anyone else, except maybe Sammy Sosa, and we all know where the team's relationship with Sammy has gone.  Mark is what being a Cubs fan is all about.  He won't be a Hall of Famer because there will never be another non-power hitting first baseman elected to the Hall.  But if you watched every day of his career from start to finish, as a lot of us did, then you know he has been inducted into the Cubs Hall of Fame a long time ago, and will be there forever.

That being said, at several of the Cubs Convention panels, particularly the one about the 1989 Cubs, I reached a boiling point where if the microphone had been handed to one more woman in the crowd, I was ready to run over and take the damn mike away from her.  Ladies, we all know you want to have Mark's children.  But that session became a circus act during the Q&A and it was embarrassing and annoying.  I was actually embarrassed for Mark and the other guys who were trying to keep the talk focused on the '89 season.

At first I was a little scared by the direction in which this piece started.  I think I may have sighed once or twice.  After reading through the make-up, hair curls, and Grace's head falling off, I truly enjoyed your write-up.  It was very well written.  Thank you.

I have to thank WGN for me being a Cubs fun.  I remember coming home from school at 2:30 p.m. to find nothing on TV worth watching except the second half of the Cubs game that probably started at 1:20 p.m.  I can remember seeing those Sandberg to Dunston to Grace double playes that seemed so effort less.  I can hear Harry Carry now through his cup of Budweiser saying "Holy Cow".  Thanks for the memories Julie!!

Grace
Great pure hitter, but not the greatest human being, and an even worse broadcaster.  I wanted to see him fall flat on his face after he left the Cubs but he did give a lot to the team during his career and you could count on him for a .300 season year in and year out.  I was a big fan when he was on the team, but I soured on him fast when I learned what kind of guy he was.  It's too bad he had to leave the way he did.

I'll say it again: "Overrated Jackass".

I don't understand what the fascination with him is. He's a lifetime .303 hitter? Wonderful, that's just spectacular. While we're on the subject, Barry Bonds is poised to set the all-time homerun record. This goes back to Al's theory of "There are some things stats cannot measure".

"Slumpbusters", not cute, Mark, I actually take pity on those women.

But hey, what do you expect from the man who blatantly ripped on a former teammate amidst a certain 'Cork' scandal. I do so vividly remember him muttering to his teammates (with a piece of wine cork on his bat) "Oh, I forgot it was there".

Not cute, Mark, hopefully, in time, we'll forget you were there.

Number 1:

Sammy Sosa and Mark Grace During the Cork Incident

June 4th, 2003

Copied verbatim from markgrace.com:

What is Grace's take on the Sammy Sosa corked bat incident? One part humor: "Had I known when I played in Chicago there were corked bats in the bat rack, I probably would have hit 25 home runs," and one part jab at Sosa: "He's going to have to answer a lot of questions. It's weird. Instead of hitting them 500 feet, he wants to hit them 550, I guess."

Again, from markgrace.com:

I wasn't good enough to play first base for the Chicago Cubs, but I was good enough to play for the World Champions."

Mark Grace, the great baseball mentor:

Grace used the work "f**ing" at least twice. More damaging was his harsh assessment of Diamondback catcher Chris Snyder His comment about Snyder's stroke, "Every f**ing swing that guy takes is an underwater swing," won't win him any friends in the clubhouse.

Divorced twice, Slumbusters.

Rebuttal...
... as someone here used to say.

Grace is a quipster. That quote on the cork day is taken somewhat out of context. Are you implying that Grace was saying he WANTED to do steroids? That's just silly. Did he not like Sosa? SCOOP! C'mon, everyone knew they hated each other.

The second quote was mentioned in Julie's profile.

The third quote -- gee, how many ballplayers do you know that DON'T drop F-bombs? Scoop again. Wow. Never would have guessed.

Finally, plenty of players are divorced. This isn't news either.

Frankly, I don't think any of your "reasons" are sufficient for the blind hatred you seem to have for someone who consistently produced on the field. Was he a glib self-promoter? Absolutely. But I don't see that as a reason for the hate you have.

For the love of God he blatantly took a shot at you, at US AS A WHOLE, and you're willing to deify him.

Sure they drop F-Bombs, everyone does, but not everyone is a sanctiomonious ass about it.

Did he take a shot at US?
In the "not good enough for the Cubs, good enough for the World Champs" quote, I did not at the time, nor do I now take that as a jab against the Cubs fans.  Why would Grace take a shot at the fans that loved him for 13 years? That was a shot at Andy MacFailure and the Cubs front office, pure and simple.  It was just like when Maddux signed with Atlanta for roughly the same amount of money the Cubs offered, he was quoted as saying he wanted to "play for a winner".  That was a shot at Larry Himes and his regime.  Good God, how many times have we, as fans, been furious with, or even hated the Cubs front office?  Just because a player leaves pissed off at the front office has nothing to do with the fans.

As for the Sosa quotes, Grace always had a quip and a quote ready to go, which is why the media loved him.  Sure he probably should have kept his mouth shut in that instance, but I doubt Grace has ever "no commented" anything, and there were certainly a lot of fans and media people saying the exact same stuff.  And you can't hold divorces against a guy.  Granted, a guy with Grace's mindset, who thinks monogamy is some kind wood, should not be getting married in the first place, but such is the life of pro athletes.  They can score anytime they want to (on and off the field), and most take full advantage of it.  Nothing new.

I'm not trying to be an apologist for anyone's lifestyle here.  I'm just saying that Grace did a lot of good on the field for the Cubs, and never did anything illegal off the field (to my knowledge) or in the clubhouse.  In this era of steroids, corked bats, etc. baseball could use a lot more Mark Graces.

Not exactly the same re Maddux leaving
The Cubs flat out refused to match the Atlanta offer so the money was not "roughly the same" However you are correct that Maddux had indicated during the negotations that he was concerned about the Cubs plans for the future because he did want to be on a winning team. Maddux left the Cubs on his own, Grace was pushed. Both were the result less than great management decisions. Both got rings they would not have gotten if they had stayed.

Who gives a shit if he slept around. most players do/did. most players say FUCK all the time. big fucking deal. Do I put him up on a pedestal? hell no. do I think he's HOF worthy? hell no. Do I think he should be ranked this high in the 100 cubs? not really, especially not in front of sandberg and several others, but I don't care. Al could've done this alphabetically for all I care. The guy was solid and consistent for ALL 13 years he was in a cub uniform, hitting over .300 with a near .400 OBP for fucks sake- the same with runners on base no less. This is Cub history we're talking about. AS A CUB, he ranks relatively high. To let your personal biases about what he did after he left chicago and whatever ego he had, especially compared to Sosa's, get in the way of how good a complimentary player he was if only the front office wouldn't have been so incompetent to get better players around him, is just ridiculous. Especially you Maddog. You even said that somebody better SHOULD have been playing first base all those years. well guess what, there wasn't. Another issue
Al, you yourself said that you were surprised that Grace never put up his "HOF Season". I wonder how much of this is due to the fact that he was known to indulge in a lifestyle that may not have the best impact on someone who plays major league baseball 162 games a year. Further, I find it interesting that many of the players who Grace took under his wing (Kerry Wood most notibly) really far underperformed what was expected of them, in part, due to questionable work ethic and inability to stay in shape.

I don't sit in judgment of why it didn't happen. I wish it had. The 1994-95 strike cost Grace about 100 hits, which would have gotten him well over 2500. Could he have had a 3000-hit career? Maybe. But we will never know.

OK
I don't see that big of a difference between "HOF Season" and "HoF-Quality season." I'm not anti-Grace (unlike Sosa, who I absolutely am). I don't want to sit in judgement, but I don't think that its unreasonable that perhaps what kept Grace from that "HOF-Quality season" was a few too many hard nights on the town. And I don't think its too much to question how positive of an influence he was on younger players.

My point, I guess, is that first and foremost, Grace was an excellent player, but his status amongst may Cub fans is almost mythical and isn't based on the numbers on the field. He was a master of PR. But if you ask Cub fans how they'd feel about having a John Olerud type of player for a decade most would give you a "meh" type of answer. If you asked them how they'd feel about a Mark Grace type of player, they'd be elated. Again, my biggest problems with Grace were his comments upon leaving and after he got his WS ring. I just am on the bandwagon with those who belive that most Cub fans tend to overrate Grace.

This is a hypothetical
that cannot happen. So, what's the point?  But -- it appears we were all fooled by Sammy Sosa. There's no proof that he ever took steroids. (Yet, anyway) But we all loved Sammy -- but we had no idea of what might have been happening in the clubhouse. That, we can discuss.

His apparent memory lapse of the English language at the Congressional hearing makes you wonder if he did juice it up. But there is no actual proof.

That's a discussion you can have. Perhaps we have all been fans of a substance abuser already, and you don't need to discuss Bonds, Manny, or anybody else in a unrealistic situation.

My favorite Cub
Mark Grace is my favorite Cub.

I don't think he is a HoF and in fact not many people think he should be. So what? Besides girls loving Grace for looks, there were many things beyond numbers that have made him become so loved in Chicago. He gace everything in the field. And he was a true team player, winning was the ultimate end. I have vivid memories of his reactions when somebody got a game winning hit, homerun or tied the game late. To me his energy and passion for the game of baseball was contagious. I am happy that he had a fallout with the Cubs because that's the only way he would have won a World Series. If somebody deserved to win it, in my mind noone deserved it more than him.

And I will tell you this much: when the game was on the line I didn't want Sosa, Dawson, Sandberg, etc. in there. I wanted Mark Grace.

It was a great write up
The way I look at it, Grace was an entertainer in a game that is, ultimately, entertainment.

I know that I've been attacked here before for saying that baseball is entertainment, but it is.  And Grace entertained with the best of them.  He wasn't a HOFer, but he was entertaining on the fiend.  He was no saint off the field, but he was still entertaining off the field.

So what if he had character flaws.  Our politicians are all alcoholics and womanizers, our business leaders steal from us, and our sports heroes cheat.  At least Grace let us have fun watching and following him.

You made my point
Baseball is entertainment.  We're all probably really obsessed, so we don't like to think of it that way.  We don't like to think that something we are so passionate about and so obsessive over is, at its core, simply entertainment.  It is, but we ignore that.

Just think of the way that the game is marketed, the way stadiums are designed, the way the players are played, and the fact that all of this is over a simple (or, not so simple) game.

is something i discovered when i was in germany.  it's difficult to find in the states, and pricey when you do.  Guiness is a good one if you only want one or two, since it's more of a sipping beer, unless you're irish.

Actual girly drinks
like sex on the beach or wine coolers.  They're wusses.

I think wine is acquired, like beer.  My host mom in France got me hooked.  Plus, it was cheeper than water or Coke in France, so you learned to drink it.  That's what I have if I want to relax.  Sports or steak almost always require beer.  The girliest thing I drink are Amaretto sours.

Most hits in a decade is one the most
meaningless stats in the history of the game.  It's a stat only us Cub fans could get excited about.  It just depends when you started your career.  Palmeiro and Grace joined the Cubs in the last couple years of the 80s and so had 10 of their best years through the 90s.  Had they started their careers in 1983, they would have played only 7 years in each decade and not had a chance of having the most hits.  Yeah, you still have to hit, but you don't have a chance if you start your career mid-decade.

And I think we have every right to wish Grace had more power.  Sandberg's power at second should have been a great bonus in the late 80s and early 90s but Grace's 10-15 homers from a traditional power position helped cancel the advatage the Cubs should have had with a power hitting middle infielder.

I liked the guy but he was still another Cub fan favorite who came up short in some ways.  Below average power at your position combined with zero speed has been a Cub trademark since I started following them back in the mid-60s.  The Cubs do love their single-hitting heavy-legged white guys.

My 2 Cents
One reason I don't come around much anymore is that statements about certain groups of people (Christians, Republicans, etc, etc) are allowed but if statements are made about other groups, people are quickly reminded that we don't talk about politics or religion here.

Another reason are the pointless arguments, like the ones here about Grace. The post was about one of the best players in team history. Looking at the stats, Grace is one of them. Whether he was a jerk or if he wasn't overrated in baseball's bigger picture doesn't change the fact that he's one of the franchise's best players.

Aside from all that, I really enjoyed this line: "I don't know who it was in the Cubs organization that decided to give Mark a shot, but I'm certain that he has the undying gratitude of the female portion of Cubs Nation and probably reserved seating in heaven somewhere near the right hand of the Father."

That's probably my favorite sentence I've ever read here. Nice work.

Since a democrat invented the internet
no Red State people can complain about anything on this blog.... As for Grace, I would pretty much agree with his ranking based on the criteria set for the rankings. It was kind of a mixed bag for me. I loved Grace for all the years he was with the Cubs but I did feel betrayed by he comments later. Even if they were aimed at McPhail, they still stung as a long time Cubs fan that has never seen the Cubs in the World Series. You know these guys are human, but it sucks that he could have gone down as a great fan favorite for almost all Cubs fans, but the thing he will be remembered for most are the comments when he was with Arizona.

by LT on Feb 3, 2007 9:12 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No Way...
Grace should've been ranked higher than Maddux. I like the site Al, but you whiffed on this one.

by theantigoat on Feb 3, 2007 6:43 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

When you say this...
... stop and remember that these rankings reflect primarily the player's performance AS A CUB.

Had Maddux had thirteen years of solid performance as a Cub, as Grace did, he'd have been ranked way higher than 18th.

"[BCB] is much better than... well, everything." -- gravedigger, January 21, 2007

by Al on Feb 3, 2007 6:48 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

This is one of the few instances...
...where I'm completely with Al.

Maddux had a much better career than Grace, obviously.  But all of Grace's accomplishments (save for his minimal time spent on a World Series team) took place as a member of the Cubs.  When you look at Grace, the team you associate with him is the Cubs.

On the other hand, Maddux achieved the great majority of his accomplishments while with the Braces.  While still recognizable as a Cub, most baseball fans associate Maddux with the Braves.

If the list were strictly "Who is better?", Maddux would obviously be several places ahead of Grace.  But it is who are the top Cubs of all time.  It is hard to highly place a player who did not even enjoy most of his accomplishments with this team.

PTBNL!

by gravedigger on Feb 3, 2007 6:51 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly
How long before people on this site begin to understand how this list is compiled? Yes - Maddux is going to the HOF. Grace will not. But Grace played nearly his entire career with the Cubs. Three of Mad Dog's four Cy Young seasons were with the Braves.

Hijacked?!
Who would do such a thing?  That doesn't happen here at BCB.  Come on.

Sammy would be between #5-#10 for me.  He'd fall in after, at least: Jenkins, Santo, Williams, Banks, and Sandberg, in no particular order.  And of course, I'm obviously missing a couple.

Sammy
is definitely top-10, possibly top-5. I think you're all forgetting some great Cubs from the old days who will be coming up soon, like Phil Cavaretta, Cap Anson and Gabby Hartnett. Not sure how they'll place, but of course Williams, Santo, Jenkins, Banks and Sandberg will also be there. Has Randy Hundley appeared yet?

Oh yeah
And Three-Finger Brown will be in the top-10 as well. Can't wait to see who's ranked the best Cub pitcher ever - him or Jenkins. It'll be close. Both had six years in a row of 20 wins. Brown might get the nod over Jenkins, however, as he pitched in the post-season for the Cubs, something Jenkins never did.

Count me among
those who ranked Grace highly, but was turned off by his attitude after leaving the Cubs.  I'd rank him as the best Cubs first baseman of the 20th century, ahead of Cavarretta (best years during the war) , Grimm (Grace was a better hitter), and Chance (although Chance's fantastic managerial record rates him higher overall).

The biggest knock on him was that he had only gap power in a power hitter's position.  But his high obp, few strikeoouts, clutch hitting, and great glove overrode that.

He was an unabashed self promoter constantly sucking up to the media.  And his feud with Sammy split the clubhouse.  His smoking habit was disgusting.

There's no doubt, though, that he gave his all on the field and played like he loved the game.  He was always the first to congratulate a teammate when he did something good.

A mixed bag, but he definitely belongs in the top 20.

by Clark Addison on Feb 3, 2007 6:59 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

mostly agree
but I'd like someone to prove to me that his feud with sammy was a detriment to the cubs making the playoffs more often. That wasn't the reason. Look who we had at third base? Try and count them all. they were all forgettable. If it was Ramirez we'd all forget this notion that Grace, at 1B, needed to hit more HRs. Same with most of the outfield. and what about pitching? Most of those teams were awful and if Grace, Sandberg, Dawson, Sosa, and the paltry other few talents we had over 13 seasons could have actually been supported by better players, we wouldn't be talking about his "flaws". and don't anyone tell me that his contract was keeping us from acquiring better players.

I'm sorry
but I find your taste in men. . . odd.  This is probably a good thing, though, as we won't be in competition with each other. And we'll always have Michael Owen.

I don't like old guys.
But you are right - it is better to not have the competition.

with the Cubs of Grace's era.  He and Ryno were my first crushes.

I never had crushes on Cubs players...
...or any players, for that matter, until my SO pointed out that baseball players can be attractive.

I think it's obvious
which curent player the female population of BCB has a crush on.  There's just something about redheads...

I didn't close this thread.

And Julie says she didn't do it either.

So who did?

Of course
I don't know the first thing about hacking (in that sense), and if I did, I wouldn't have stopped the thread if I didn't have the last comment!

I forgot about that.
Yes, threads automatically close after a certain period of time (I think it's a week, but it could be more). This is to avoid comment spam.

I keep waiting for Julie to take the last word and close this, so I had to reopen it for that purpose.
