MLB Fears Bloggers!

On our SB Nation baseball discussion list yesterday, the Rev Halofan, who runs the Angels site Halos Heaven, shared this juicy little item with us:

Cupie, a friend who helps with Halos Heaven, does interviews, etc., he has been trying to nail down an interview with some Angels players or team personnel.

He was told today by Angels assistant media relations man Larry Babcock that MLBAM has instructed his office (and the office of other teams) to have NO contact or relations with non-accredited internet sites - especially bloggers.

Cupie did not debate him, and maybe this was just the brush off, but Babcock asured us that "they all read your site here" but that his hands were tied.

More proof that the people who run MLB have their heads stuck in the 1950's. Do they think if they ignore us, we're just going to go away? Hardly.

The consensus on the SB Nation list seems to be that MLB doesn't want to acknowledge a group that they either can't:

  • control, or
  • make money from.
  • We're too big to ignore. We are also their best customers, and their most passionate fans. Ignoring us isn't just stupid, it threatens to cut off a possible source of more interest in their product.

Part of this seems to be a desire on the part of the clubs not to give press credentials to bloggers. Frankly, that hasn't been my focus -- I've never asked for credentials, and I'm happy to keep my season ticket and be "part of the game" from the bleachers.

But I also wouldn't mind doing an interview with Jim Hendry, or Lou Piniella, or some of the coaches or players. I cannot see how this hurts the Cubs, the individuals involved, or MLB.

But then, this is also the outfit that's about to cut off some of its fans to access to MLB Extra Innings, as Ed Sherman confirmed in the Tribune today. Sherman's in agreement with me when he writes:

... baseball just seems bent on reducing access. The decision seems to follow the same game plan that says let's put all the World Series games at night so kids can't see them. Growing the game doesn't seem to be part of the equation.

Too bad. I had looked forward to overdosing on Extra Innings. Now I'll just have to go outside and play golf.

He's got it exactly right. Get your heads out of the sand, MLB. In case you hadn't noticed, the years on the calendar begin with "2" now. Wake up.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

    Al...
You know I have much love for your site and your degree of journalistic quality. And frankly, I think a blanket rule on access is silly. I can though at least appreciate on some level where MLB is coming from. I've seen over the last few months easily a good half dozen sites that frankly I'd rather forget. Low brow to say the least. One even opened on the home page with profanity. Most blogs lack an editor, writers with any training or previous experience in writing, and no researchers. Or someone with that skill set. Surely you can appreciate that this medium is going to give folks pause. Perhaps your group might correspond with the commissioner's office directly about this. I suspect that your collective clout and reputation might be of some help.

And for the record, what the $%@#$@#@ does it take for SB Nation to become "accredited"?

    Your point is taken.
However, as the Rev pointed out, we know that the teams read our sites. You'd think they'd know who's worth giving access to and who isn't, rather than issue a blanket "ignore them" proclamation.

We've been wondering ourselves why we can't get SB Nation (not just BCB, but all of us) more access, considering there are now 100 of us.

    I'm sure they do...
I'm just assuming that the truth was told in that it came from the New York offices.

Just as an aside, has SB Nation considered petitioning for media credentials? It might be a way to bypass the league.

    In a way...
... I don't even want credentials. I think being an "outsider" from that standpoint gives me more freedom to write what I want.

The Cubs have, in the past, rejected requests from bloggers, including myself, for interviews. With a new media relations director, that may change. We shall see.

    Its a silly Rule
Certainly some blogs are bad, but so is some sports talk radio.  I have been unfortunate enough to have been coming home late recently and have caught a few minutes of a Jim Roan show on ESPN.   Only a few minutes as I turned it off.   It is of very low quality which shouldn't even be on local radio (and yet it is apparently nationally syndicated).  The level of discourse on this blog is much much higher than that piece of trash (or the piece of trash that WSCR put on in the mornings a few years ago which caused me to take that station off of my radio dial)

    The difference
The problem with accrediting bloggers is that once you start, where do you end? For example, if I give interviews to BCB, do I also have to do it if 1060W or GROTA also come calling? Do I, as a media relations professional, have to assign an intern or staffer to judge which blog is a legitimate site that deserves an credential or interview, and which does not? How many readers would a blog need to have to be credentialed? How many hits? How long would it be in existence? It would become an impossible task to judge and rate these blogs.

That is not to say that a site could not evolve into a news site that deserved accreditation. But at their core, most true blogs are the opinions of amateur writers for the consumption of the masses.

    "Nonaccredited criteria"?
It seems like MLB should be able to come up with some, for lack of a better term, "nonaccredited criteria" to grant some measure of access to sites like this one.

I agree with Damen Jackson that there are plenty -- and I mean plenty -- of low-brow, fly-by-night, just-plain-silly baseball blogs out there. But there are also a number of blogs -- like this one -- run by dedicated, knowledgable, passionate fans that, quite frankly, appear to be vastly more in touch with the game than many of the so-called "accredited" journalists being paid to write about baseball.

Couldn't the MLB hire some sort of consultant to objectively evaluate a nonaccredited media entity (such as BCB) and determine whether it's serious and, more important, valuable? When you consider how long BCB has been here (hey, two years to the date), how many posts are logged daily and the depth of many of our discussions, I think we'd pass the test.

    "Blogger" in the perjorative sense
thats what gets me, and what makes a blanket policy lame

its like treating all newspapers the same, whether its the Sun Times or the Hubbadr High Gazette

there are people in the media who get it, use (and steal from blogs) and see things for what they are... but there are also alot in the over 45 set who don't and willfully won't

their savviness extends just far enough to make disparaging comments about "some internet blogger" during a broadcast

    I can see both sides
I run a music blog that I have complete control of, and I wouldn't trade that for having to answer to someone, unless it meant I could do it as a full-time job with benefits. Clearly that ain't happening, so it's nice to have the latitude to do or say whatever I want, how I want to say it. I understand that this means I likely wouldn't ever be taken seriously by "official" media sources, and I get lumped in with every other blogger from the very worst to the very best, but I like the niche we've found and I think we do it as well as anyone out there. As someone who wanted to be a journalist, if I can satisfy my desire to write and in the process entertain and/or inform a thousand people a week, I am fine with that. I think it's enough for most people really.

Another site I used to write for was actually  getting write-ups in a few national magazines (Entertainment Weekly) and getting Best-Of awards from newspapers, and had the timing been different, I imagine we might have found one of those semi-legitimate blogging jobs through AOL or whatever. I think ultimately it would have muzzled the very thing that made us funny and we'd probably have hated it.

I imagine that most ballclubs see the aggregate quality of most baseball blogs as being below their standard, and for now they are probably right. Obviously there are a lot of rabid fans with good ideas here, but it's tough to say whether all these positives could be harnessed in a way that would dovetail with traditional media. I think that ultimately, internet-based DIY media will form a secondary layer of reporting that while not being taken in the same way as traditional outlets, will serve as a sort of counterbalance to them. Not having to answer to the pressure of various influences like advertisers and bottom-liners certainly gives a lot of freedom, but if the freedom isn't used correctly, no one will take you seriously anyway.

lets focus on things we CAN do here to improve the site, lets get interviews we can.

Al asking Bruce Miles who does post here a bunch of questions we come up with could be a good read, Maybe get guys like Will Carroll (i think al interviewed him before) or other BP writers would be intresting as well, you could even spam Steve Stone.

There are plenty of intresting people who would take the time to talk with BCB i mean we have to be one of the larger SB nation sites. Besides an interview with Jim Hendry would be another showcase for his incredible powers of question deflection.

But please don't forget that SB Nation
fears the Chat. Windy City Gridiron had a real time chat going the first few weeks during the football games and it was pretty cool instead of having to refresh the page all the time. SB Nation decided that it cut down on the page hits and made Windy City Gridiron remove the chat from the web site. We mentioned that they can take the chat at the end of the game and post it to the blog but the higher ups made their decision. Now what does this have to do with Diary?

Well it came to mind on how stupid major league baseball can be making up stupid rules and forcing all the teams to follow the rules, well it looks like SB Nation does the same thing. Some of the higher ups made a stupid rule and made all the other SB Nations follow. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

.. this supposed "rule" doesn't really prevent anyone from participating, unlike MLB's Extra Innings decision, which will prevent me from getting it unless I shell out big $ to change over to satellite, which I don't want to do anyway.

    It's not an apt analogy.

    "MLB fears the bloggers"
I tried to tell them, "Don't fear the Blogger", but they simply requested "more cowbell" rather than listen.

    My .02
MLB doesn't like bloggers because they have nothing to lose.

Newspapers can be sued, reporters can be fired, whilst bloggers are free from threat. They can't be forced to toe the line or softball questions.

If the Cubs were to adopt BCB, it would be like Muskat's columns, a horrible PR shell of their previous existance.

    And FWIW...
    ... that will NEVER happen.

    don't be so sure, Al.
What if your prefrontal cortex is severely damaged from a line drive at a game, and then you get into a car accident on the ride home, and suffer with a large metal object through your cerebellum. You might start asking yourself questions and then responding to yourself.

    Just saying.

    issue solved?
Hey guys.  Over at Goat Riders, I've been writing about and investigating this incident the past few days.

I was actually able to get ahold of a media relations guy in the MLB front office.  You can read about it here: http://www.goatriders.org/archives/2007/02/mlbs_policty_on_blogging.html

    This kind of reminds me
of where politicians were 4-5 years ago. Then, at yearlykos, they were all tripping over each other to kiss blogger a**. They'll come around, they just have to realize that we have mutual interests.

Buster Olney said a few days ago that the Braves would entertain offers for their 26 year old shortstop (who makes 450k) Yunel Escobar. He is a plus bat, a solid defender, and would move Theriot to his more appropriate position at second.

They are looking for a bat in return. Apparently Cox doesn't like the guy.

I couldn't even speculate what we'd have to send them in return, but I think he would be a good fit given his low salary, his productive bat, his position, and his age. I don't care if he's a jerk if he makes the team win more.

What would it take?
