Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Giants at Scottsdale, Monday 3/12, 3:05 CT

Z pitches today. He'll be stretched out to four innings for the first time this year, just as Jason Marquis was yesterday.

Among others pitching today will be Jeff Samardzija, probably for the final time in a major league game this spring before roster cuts (a dozen or so may be announced later today). About this, Lou Piniella says:

"I'd like to see maybe Samardzija face Barry Bonds one time," said Piniella, who plans to have Samardzija pitch early enough in the game to face the Giants' regulars. "That would be exciting for Jeff."

It would be, so assuming Z does go four innings, expect Samardzija to throw the fifth inning.

Bruce Miles reports on Buck Coats' great start:

Lou Piniella measured his answer when asked if rookie outfielder Buck Coats could make the team.

"Look, he's having a good spring," Piniella said. "He's played well in the outfield. He's swinging the bat well. We're taking notice. Let's see where that leads."

Also today, Cliff Floyd will play for the first time. Jacque Jones may play some CF, either today or later this week. Matt Morris is the Giants' starting pitcher today.

If you don't have access to CSN Chicago, MLB Audio has the game with a webcast featuring Giants announcers.

The telecast is also being picked up by MLB.TV, if you have signed up for that. And if you have none of the above, here's MLB.com Gameday.

UPDATE [2007-3-12 13:28:52 by Al]: As usual, courtesy of Bruce Miles, the lineups (both teams) are in the comments.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

I'm really
interested to see how Floyd does today. Part of me doesn't want to see him do well but then that's not being kind either.

Hope Z does well today.

With all due respect,
how on earth could you not want to see him do well?   Here's the only question that you need to concern yourself with.  Does a healthy and productive Cliff Floyd make the Cubs a better team than an unhealthy and unproductive Cliff Floyd?  The answer to that question is obviously yes and any defense for saying otherwise is simply silly, outrageous, and selfish.

I like Floyd
REALLY ( don't laugh those of you who date back to ASBCC) but I do see him as a "danger " to Orange Guy ESPECIALLY with a contract laden with incentives based on ABs. What I would like is for Cliff to develop a unique injury which some including me might argue he already has , called say "Iron Hand" Cliff's hand's will have no trouble gripping and swinging the bat but will not function inside the mitt therefor he becomes a  TERRIFIC pinch hitter.

GO CLIFF but stay on the bench most of the time

How is he a danger?
Could he possibly make the 17th best left fielder in 2006 who had 500 or more plate appearances in left worse?

Floyd has done things in his career that Murton will never touch.  He's not an everyday player at this point, but neither is Murton.

Most of all, I just can't fathom how Cubs fans could wish injury to a person who could be as productive as Floyd could be.  Makes absolutely no sense to me.

Dear God!  I get bashed because I like statistics and stress the value of them.  And now I'm involved in a discussion where people are wishing injury on a guy who hit 34 home runs just two years ago.

It's just mind boggling.

If Osama bin Laden is a great left fielder and can help the Cubs win games then sign the son of a bitch.

It's the name on the front of the uniform that matters.

Re
Has Cliff Floyd done things in his career that Matt Murton will never do?  Maybe.  Quite possibly even probably, since I doubt MM will ever have the HR power Floyd once had.

Will Floyd do these things for the Cubs?  Probably not.  It's the Cliff Floyd of 2007 that's taking time from MM, and that's where the problem lies.

by Jed Taylor on Mar 13, 2007 10:57 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm sick of this nonsense. This team needs a healthy cliff floyd getting 350 or more plate appearances to be successful. Murton will be a better player if he doesn't go out there 160 games. I swear, some people don't realize there are more than 8 position players on a team.

I think I understand your meaning
that you want to see youth like Murton, Coats, etc. not only get an opportunity, but thrive as day to day players in the majors.  However, I agree with maddog that we need Floyd to add value.  If Floyd is strong and Murton/Coats are strong, then Hendry has options to improve the club for the months that usually don't matter.

About Floyd...
... he was healthy in 2005 and had a very, very good year. Last year he was hurt and didn't.

He's not young any more, and coming off an injury I'm very leery of him. I don't WANT him to fail -- yes, he can be an asset if he's healthy -- but I'm not convinced he's going to be healthy enough to contribute.

I also hate that he'll take playing time away from Matt Murton.

I know, I know
you've only mentioned it 50 times now :)

It's no guarantee he'll be healthy or even productive, but there's a nice chance. So I agree with your first point, but not with your last sentence. I don't get is this "taking time away from Murton" stuff. This isn't Dusty. Lou will do what's right. Whoever is producing will get the most time, agreed? and I know some people are wishing he gets injured and it's just selfish because the cubs would be worse without him. We need that depth. I think I said 350 PAs and that's probably too many. More like 250-300 should be enough.

It's first base.
The position where David Ortiz plays in interleague games. Probably, by consensus, the least defensively demanding position on the infield. The position where you didn't notice that Todd Walker is a horrible fielder every time the ball came anywhere near him. Am I saying that Cliff Floyd could win a Gold Glove there? Nope. But I think he could handle it in case of emergency without completely screwing the pooch.

by cwyers on Mar 12, 2007 2:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Well...
... he hasn't, because Floyd hasn't even played yet this year.

Who else can back up 1B? Ward can't really play the field at all any more except in a dire emergency. Blanco can, but then you lose your backup catcher.

by Damen Jackson on Mar 12, 2007 11:13 AM CDT reply actions

Last September...
... in his callup, Coats seemed overmatched. He does seem to work very hard, and has done well at every minor league level. He hit and played like this last spring training, too.

I'll reserve judgment till I see him play in person. I know he's in the mix to be the last guy on the bench, and he has an advantage over Angel Pagan because he can play the infield, too. I think Piniella likes those types of players.

I'd like to see him make it -- seems like a good team guy.

Enough cliches for you?

Radio
Is it like this every spring, or does it seem like it's particularly rare this season to get a WGN radio broadcast? When the other team's announcers are calling the game, I have no interest in listening.

And is anyone else peeved about last Saturday's broadcast? I know Piniella doesn't choose his starting lineup based on whether the game is televised or not, but I was very disappointed when I saw the lineup featured guys like Kinkade, Coats and Cedneo rather than any of the big offensive guns. For that matter ,if Soriano is learning how to play CF, why isn't he in the lineup every day?

And my seven-year-old boy was also disappointed -he had looked forward all week to watching Lee, Soriano and Ramirez, and instead the only players he knew were Blanco and Jones. We turned it off in the third inning.

re: Radio
Although I can definitely identify with your frustration, danimal, I think most of the questions you're asking can be answered by a simple four-word phrase: "Because it's spring training."

A lot of players need to get playing time so that management can draw up their battle plans for the season (or at least the first month or so of the season). And I don't know how mlb.com decides which broadcasters get the nod for Gameday Audio, but I'm guessing, yeah, it's always a crapshoot like this. To be honest, this is the first spring training I've ever followed this closely.

I can't say that I agree with you about having no interest in watching/listening to the games. I'm just happy to have baseball, and more specifically the Cubs, back. And I'll gladly suffer through a few lineups wrought with Kinkades and Cedenos, knowing that April 2 is a mere two weeks away.

I agree with you about Soriano, though. I'd like to see him getting every possible opportunity to gain some centerfield experience. The recent news, however, that Jacque Jones will be starting some games in center could indicate that the Soriano-in-center experiment is about to flame out in the Bunson burner.

Thanks as always, Bruce!

Not much to complain about in that lineup. I like THE RIOT in the two-hole. And Lee through Floyd is a pretty solid wall of power hitters. (In fact, if Barrett were in there, the Scottsdale electrical grid would be at risk.)

The bottom of the lineup is somewhat shaky. Then again, Izzy is turning out to be the offensive surprise of spring in my book -- thus far at least.

we just might see Jones batting second in the order against righties this year sometimes. Lou has hinted at that. Floyd would then bat 5th sometimes when that happens. I'm all for Murton #2 most of the time, but Jones would be OK there against RHP for reasons I've stated before.

What's the excitement over Coats?
I don't get it.  People are talking about finding a way to get him more AB's.  Why?

His OPS has went down the past 3 years as he's moved up the ladder.  Last year, he slugged less than .400 at AAA.  For a corner outfielder, that's not very good.

At best, he might be in a battle with Pagan for the 25th spot.  I think that's why he has played so much this spring.  Pinella knows most of his roster is set and he's looking at Coats for the final spot.  I'd take Pagan and send Coats back to Iowa.  Mainly because I think Pagan is probably a better CF backup.

by rlpete on Mar 12, 2007 1:31 PM CDT reply actions

yep
other than hammering the ball quite a bit this spring, which anyone can do in a short spurt, there's no history to suggest he can be anything more than what he's done in the past. Last year Pagan had a great spring with, iirc, 3 or 4 HRs. Pagan also might be the fastest guy on the team and is probably the best defensive replacement in the OF. If the season started today Pagan probably makes it.

anybody else think Coats has a chance?

by cashcowsquirtingsourmilk on Mar 12, 2007 1:50 PM CDT up reply actions

He has a chance, yes...
... and as I said, partly because he can play infield positions as well, and I think Piniella likes guys like that. With only five bench players it doesn't hurt to have at least two of them (Theriot would be the other) who can play multiple positions, especially since the three others (Ward, Floyd and Blanco) are either defensive statues, or your backup catcher.

by Al Yellon on Mar 12, 2007 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions

The bench
While I don't expect it, I hope that Piniella is rethinking the 12 man pitching staff.  With Ward and Floyd both basically the same player, I think the Cubs need 6 bench players.  Assuming that Coats can play the infield, either he or Cedeno have to make the team as the second infielder.  That means Jones has to be the backup CF'er.  I'm not sure I like that either.  I would prefer to see Pagan on the team for his speed and CF experience.

by rlpete on Mar 12, 2007 2:42 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with you...
... but it appears Piniella is leaning toward using 12 pitchers. I think that's dumb, particularly with all the off days in April.

Hey Lou, we're long overdue.

by deadcatbounce on Mar 12, 2007 2:50 PM CDT up reply actions

...and another reason
To choose one: Ward or Floyd.

I know I said this before, but if Floyd proves that he's healthy and can play, I don't know why we'd need both him and Ward on the bench (esp since Ward hasn't really hit anything in ST).

Then I think the position player roster looks pretty good:

LF Murton/Floyd
CF Soriano
RF Jones
3B Ramirez
SS Izturis
2B DeRosa
1B Lee
CA Barrett

LF/1B Floyd OR LF Murton
LF/CF/RF Pagan
LF/CF/RF/SS/2B Coates
IF Theriot
CA Blanco

This bench creates depth three-players deep at almost every position.

Plus-- if Theriot unseats DeRosa at 2B (which is possible), then DeRosa is just as flexible, if not more so, than Theriot.

by Romero on Mar 12, 2007 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions

If they need 12 pitchers...
then I agree with you.  It might have to be either Ward or Floyd.  However, knowing Floyd's injury history I would like to see Ward kept for the lefty PH'er.  I really don't see the need for 7 pitchers in the pen.  Even last year, when the rookie starters rarely could get through 5, the 7th guy in the pen (usually Guzman) didn't pitch that much.

This makes me feel good.
Lou Piniella measured his answer when asked if rookie outfielder Buck Coats could make the team.

I just keeep having increased optimism on this season.  If spring training shows anything about these younger guys then we will be really deep.  Whether or not Coats makes the 25-man roster at least we can have some confidence if he is called up for an injury.

It just seems like a huge weight is being lifted off of so many of these players.  Maybe it is the departure of Dusty or maybe it's just a fluke, but I am really feeling good about this season.

never been done
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0FCI/is_12_60/ai_79854350/pg_7

Has any major league pitcher ever hit for the cycle? Also, has any National League pitcher hit for the cycle since the advent of the DH rule?

Gerald F. Kogh, Jr.
West Milford, N.J.

In checking over the long list of players who have hit for the cyle, we could not find a pitcher among the cycle hitters in either league.

In fact, we didn't find too many pitchers who produced one or more singles, doubles, triples and home runs in one season, let alone in one game.

These pitchers who produced at least a single, double, triple and homer in one season include the following:

American League--Walter Johnson of the Senators in 1925, Red Ruffing of the Red Sox and Yankees in 1930, Catfish Hunter of the A's in 1971, Wes Ferrell of the Red Sox in 1985, Elam Vangilder of the Browns in 1922 and Joe Bush of the Yankees in 1924.

National League--Jack Bentley of the New York Giants in 1923, Don Newcombe of the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1955, Dutch Reuther of the Dodgers in 1921, Doc Crandall of the N.Y. Giants in 1910, and Jack Scott of the Boston Braves in 1921.

In the 1056 season, the Chicago White Sox had a 10-year-old pitcher named Jim Derrington start one game. As a 17-year-old, Derrington pitched in 20 games. What became of Derrington after those seasons?

Any Argument, sufficiently argued in an intelligent manner, is correct.

by HerrProf on Mar 12, 2007 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions

No
Never heard of that in my life. Never happened.

The youngest player in Major League history was Joe Nuxhall, who pitched for the 1944 Reds at the age of 15. He pitched just one game - two-thirds of an inning, allowing 5 runs and 5 walks. He later returned to the majors as an adult and had a decent career, winning 135 games.

by cashcowsquirtingsourmilk on Mar 12, 2007 4:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Of course he walked...
...the strike zone is defined as going from the knees to the letters on the jersey. Veeck told Gaedell not to swing no matter what.

He also sent the contract to the league office about 30 minutes before they closed on a Friday, just so he could insure that the league wouldn't look too deeply into it.

Afterwards, MLB required much closer verification of contracts before approval, and they set a minimum height. There's a nice recap of it here.

Ohman
must feel the pressure knowing he doesn't have a secure bullpen job. Good to see that the tension is improving his pitching.

The Shark rules!!
Golf dined on those headlines for at least a decade...I like the nickname (easier than spelling his last name!!) but let's hope it's not overused...Maybe a good thing if it is if this kid (unlike so many recent pitching prospects) can live up to the hype, grab a lot of headlines.

PS Golfer Norman never quite did (live up to the hype), but had a great career with 2 majors and a lot of heartbreaks that could-have-been...sound familiar?

cubs win!

by cashcowsquirtingsourmilk on Mar 12, 2007 5:54 PM CDT reply actions

well,
cubs continue to hack the horsehide with the hickory (and maple too)

came into the game hitting .320 as a team this spring. don't know what the OBP is. cubs batters showing good plate discipline. I don't see them swinging at many bad pitches.

where are the cumulative spring stats? do they keep them? this is the first time I've followed ST this closely.

hopefully D Lee is OK. mild groin tweak.

Floyd got a single and a walk with 2 RBIs and didn't get hurt much to the amazement of half of cubdom.

Z had another typical good but high pitch count outing, which worries me. When will he get it?

the giants fielded like walter matthau's first practice squad.

i guess i'm done.

Z
is a beast, I never worry about him.  Nice W men.

Z
the constant high pitch count is something to worry about if we want the cubs to go all the way.
