Police State

Unless something unusual happens at Wednesday's Chicago City Council meeting, the Police are going to play two concerts at Wrigley Field on July 5 and 6, both at night, while the Cubs are on a road trip to Washington and Pittsburgh.

A City Council committee approved the Cubs' request for these shows yesterday and the full Council is expected to give the OK tomorrow.

The Cubs agreed to give up one night game this year in return, playing 29 instead of the maximum 30 allowed by the 2002 ordinance increasing the previous maximum of 18.

It is, of course, all about money:

The motivation for the concert series is money that would not fall under Major League Baseball's revenue-sharing umbrella.

For every dollar the Cubs earn on game days, 34 cents must be shared with other teams. For every dollar raked in at a concert, the Cubs get to keep 100 percent.

And buried in that article is another note on an issue that got glossed over this offseason:

[44th Ward Alderman Tom] Tunney also intends to hold the Cubs' feet to the fire on construction of the stalled 400-space parking garage that was supposed to follow a 1,790-seat bleacher expansion. "I've told them they've got to commit to building this building," he said.

That building was part of the deal which allowed the Cubs to construct the new bleachers -- they had agreed to provide at least one new parking space for every ten new seats. The 400-space garage would have easily satisfied that requirement. If Tunney gets his way, expect that building to be built next offseason.

Thank God!!!!
For someone who lives in the neighborhood, I can't wait until this structure is built.  Parking has been horrible of late.

"Old people"???
Sheesh.

Did you read the Sun-Times link? It gives the reason DMB can't do this gig.

What the hell's a DMB?
We're hoping like mad the Police end up down here at Churchill Downs.  The Stones were there in the fall and this would be a great show to happen right after the Spring Meet.  The Police ROCK!

DMB>>>>>
Dave Mathews Band.

I was hoping for Dave or Pearl Jam.

Oh. Still rather see The Police...
...or Zeppelin who are supposed to tour again or The Who.  Rather not see Pearl Jam at all....Dave Matthews would be a decent show, though.

I guess it depends.......
on your age.

The Who are tired.  How many final tours will this make.

Zepplin would be great, but it is not happening.  Plant is coming out with a solo album.

I will stick with Pearl Jam.

I'll probably go to one of the Police shows...
... I didn't go to Buffett two years ago; I like him but didn't want to shell out $90 for just the novelty value of seeing him at Wrigley.

The Police, though -- I like them a lot. Hope to hear some new stuff from them, too.

I went....
to Buffet for the party.  Not a fan, but worth the money.

I will go to see the Police.  I am not excited about this.  I would have much rather seen DMB.

Personally, I would rather hear the old stuff.

Supposedly they're working
on a new album.  They put on a good show.  Saw them in the early 80's a couple times.  I also saw The Who with The Clash in St. Louis in the early 80's and have seen Zeppelin 4 times.  Buffet puts on a big party.  When I was living up north (Michigan) he'd put on a show every year.  BIG party.  Definitely worth it to go to at least one of his shows.

I saw.....
Pearl Jam with Plant in 2005.

Concert was a benefit for Katrina victims.  Show was for about 1000 people at House of Blues.  Was an unbelievable show.

I have seen the Who twice.  I would not see them again.

I like the Who's music...
... but with only two of the original members still alive, the band touring as "The Who" isn't really them, is it?

PJ and.....
possibly RAM (Rage Against the Machine).

I will be there to see them.

Curious:  are you running another marathon?  I am running Chicago to get a time for Boston.  I have not run one since Boston in 2004.

Marathons
I am, in fact, running another.  I'm scheduled for my first Boston in about 5 weeks.  Getting very excited.

Any recommendations?  Where do you do your training?  I've run with the CARA bunch the last couple summers, but I've been training mostly on my own this winter.

Re
Pearl Jam played here in Missoula in 2005 to kick off Jon Tester's Senate campaign.  Jeff Ahmet is a local.  The show was simply outstanding, and they played three encores to be sure we all got our money's worth.  A must-see for anyone who hasn't.

The Stones played here last October.  I remember when they played the Double Door, which was just around the corner from my condo.  No big deal.  Here, it was like the first aliens from Mars were landing.

Zepplin would be fantastic if one could be sure they could still hit the high notes.

What's contemporary music have to offer?  Justin Timberlake?  Kenny Chesney?  Some hip-hopper no one heard of last month and no one will remember next?

Having to choose between those options and The Police, I'll take Sting any day, especially if it could be from the front row of the upper deck.

Justin Timberlake
The only association I have with this creature is someone wrote a very cool adaptation of "I'm Bringing Sexy Back" which was "I'm Bringing Rexy Back" which is a song hoping Rex Grossman is good Rex in 07.

And I believe Brittney Should never have broken up with him for the idiot but that's another story.

I love the Police but will be out of town that weekend.

Ummmmm

Isn't it Roger Waters who's touring and playing Dark Side of the moon. In fact I know it is cause Ihave seats at the Garden for it.

I saw the Police at ol' comiskey Park. It was my first big concert. Doubt I'll make it back for Wrigley.

Zeppelin in Wrigley
Now that's heaven.  Anyone have links or is it just speculation?  Are they talking about touring with Jones or is it just Page/Plant?  I've seen them twice, both times at Market Square Arena in Indy back in the 90's.  Great shows, great music.  The name pageian is because of Jimmy Page.  I was reading an article in Rolling Stone and they were talking about Hendrixian chords and Claptonian riffs but nothing about Page, and that pissed me off.  So the next day or two I called to set up my first isp account and the guy asks me what I want as my user name.  Hadn't thought of that so I looked around the room and saw a poster of Jimmy Page and told the guy to name my account pageian.  Used it ever since.

Re
Tom Tunney is not one to be messed with.  He owns that ward now, and Daley will do anything to keep him from organizing lakefront independents into something that might challenge his reign.

If Tunney says build, the Trib better start digging, or Daley's going to find more than just a little falling concrete to complain about.  And it's not like he's a big fan of the Trib to begin with.

I'll bet that garage breaks ground the week after the Cubs are done this year.  Let's hope it's November.

by Jed Taylor on Mar 14, 2007 9:20 AM CDT reply actions

Agreed.
And Tunney was just re-elected, too, so I think whatever he says, goes. I agree, I think you'll see that building completed by opening day 2008.

Really, there's no reason they couldn't at least start even during this season.

Eddie Vedder
I met Eddie Vedder at Wrigley a few times.

I would like to see Weird Al perform at Wrigley.  His best song to me is "My Baby's In Love with Eddie Vedder".

Of course the most appropriate performer at Wrigley would be Steve Goodman but he's dead.
