Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Angels at Mesa, Friday 3/2, 2:05 CT

Courtesy of Bruce Miles, here's today's lineup:

Soriano, CF
Izturis, SS
Lee, 1B
Ramirez, 3B
Murton, LF
DeRosa, 2B
Blanco, C
Pagan, RF
Zambrano, P

Ugh. Not quite as nice as yesterday's. I hope Izturis strikes out twice, maybe that'll show Lou that he shouldn't bat second.

Z will face Joe Saunders, who is exactly fifteen days younger than he is. Saunders has made fifteen ML starts, Z 146, which is only one way of showing you how accomplished Z is at not-quite-26 years old.

No radio or TV for today's game (unless it's on MLB Audio or XM, which I don't have).

Finally, many of you may be too young to remember this name -- Jack Jacobson -- but I sure do. He was a producer, director and later program manager at WGN-TV in the 1950's and 1960's. Jacobson died last week at age 84. Among other things, he was responsible for discovering that the CF camera angle was the best for showing the pitcher and batter -- and it's a WGN innovation, discovered at a very unusual place:

It was for a game at Thillens Stadium on Devon Avenue that WGN first used the center-field shot, a view from behind the pitcher and toward the catcher and batter that became a staple of baseball telecasts. [Longtime WGN-TV producer Jack] Rosenberg said a large crew at WGN, including Mr. Jacobson, deserves credit for that innovation.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Not to be off-topic but did we get all the tickets for BCB day? Is it still on?

Well...
... that depends on how many people did get tickets (I have six of them myself) and how many still want to go.

Perhaps this is diary-worthy? Anyone want to pick up the ball?

the annoying thing is
the current scoreboard only links to one audio feed if there is an option for more than one. This multimedia guide seems the best place to start listening for live stuff.

So obviously they make it fairly difficult to find on their site.

MLB
Overall, I think the MLB site is pretty lousy. It's too busy and at times has too many moving images and graphics. Additionally, the audio/video options and interface are imperfect and can be frustrating.

Is there no better option than Izzy batting second? This just seems like bad (read: old school) baseball lineup creation.

Ehhh. I guess I'll have plenty of months to complain. For now, I can be thankful for all the good things I have in life.

I'm assuming
that some of the roster decisions have to do with simply getting guys at bats and trying things out. Lou has said that wins and and losses aren't that important so I'm sure he's just tinkering with things

Spring Training
It is spring training, so it does seem likely that's what Lou is doing.  I think we've got enough veterans on the team that they know what they need to do to get ready for the season.
PAGAN!

by Jesse Guam on Mar 2, 2007 11:37 AM CST up reply actions

Re
If you assume that Lou would put that collection of players out on the field in a regular game, it's really not that bad of a lineup.

If he bats Murton 2nd, he makes the order top-heavy and basically concedes the bottom half to stranding runners on base and producing outs.  Izturis batting second can at least, hopefully, make contact that will move Soriano (and Z in a real game, since it's unlikely he gets to actually bat today) along, while Murton's production in the 5th slot is needed, since Blanco and Pagan are there only to give starters rest.

You could flip Pagan and Neifi, but I think I'd rather have a starter hitting 2nd, at least until it was clear he was hopeless in even just making productive contact.  It's a weak offensive lineup, and shows why the OF needs upgraded.

by Jed Taylor on Mar 2, 2007 11:56 AM CST up reply actions

Weak
Yes, you are right that it's a weak lineup. But I find it hilarious that you spend your whole comment apologizing for Cesar "the worst SS in baseball" Izturis, and then come to the sage conclusion that the outfield (the same OF that we just hired Alfonso Soriano to play in) needs an upgrade. How's this for an idea? When a lineup is weak, address the weakNESS. In this case, Izturis' presence in the Cubs dugout. The response to Izturis sucking is not to get better players around Izturis. The correct response is to REPLACE IZTURIS. This is not hard, people.

by Jhoratio on Mar 2, 2007 1:20 PM CST up reply actions

Re
It's not an either/or situation.  If the Cubs had someone better than Pagan to play RF, DeRosa could bat second, that person could bat 6th, and Izturis could bat 8th.

I'm sure the Dodgers are still laughing at Hendry for taking Izturis off their hands and getting a couple months of Maddux as a bonus.  What would you do about the situation and his $4MM contract?

by Jed Taylor on Mar 2, 2007 2:12 PM CST up reply actions

What would I do?
I would:

1) consider Izturis' salary a sunk cost and cut him from the team.

2) name Ryan Theriot starting SS

3) name Eric Patterson starting 2B

4) relegate DeRosa to platoon outfield duty with J. Jones

5) play out the season

WHATEVER anyone has to say about the wisdom of this plan, they must first concede that starting Izturis for the entire season is undoubtedly the worse plan.

by Jhoratio on Mar 2, 2007 2:18 PM CST up reply actions

Re
That's a fine plan if you're the Royals with some money and can spend the season training your middle IF.  There's no way, however, that's Piniella's going after a championship playing one guy out of position and a complete rookie up the middle.

I'm no fan of Neifi Izturis.  I didn't see anything last year in his 22 games with the Cubs to think he's more than an average fielder.  But Bruce Miles has reported he's looking very smooth in drills and as long as he bats 8th, he's the best option the Cubs have available for what he's been acquired for.

If the Cubs could get a SS who could not embarrass himself at the plate, I'd eat the contract, too.  But Eric Patterson is going to spend this season at Iowa - which is where he belongs, as is probably Theriot with the team carrying 12 pitchers.  They could cut Ward, but then there's no backup for DLee.

by Jed Taylor on Mar 2, 2007 2:46 PM CST up reply actions

And you've just described
why the Cubs are guaranteed losers every single farkin' year.

Go Cubs, indeed
I'll be listening via Gameday Audio again, though it's a shame we won't be able to enjoy Pat and Ron.

I agree with pretty much everything that's been said about the lineup. It's definitely not as awe inspiring as yesterday's, but (to echo the obvious) this is a spring training game, so a lotta different guys gotta take their hacks.

I concede Jed Taylor's point about batting Izzy second instead of Murton, but I still don't like it. If Murton's not an option, I'd rather see Pagan in the two-hole. Oh, and I'm wondering whether Izzy's fortuitous single yesterday played any role in Lou giving him the nod as No. 2.

Anyway, I'll probably be chiming in some smart-ass remarks during the game as I'm sitting in front of a computer here at work and don't have much else better to do (uh, except my job, of course).

You raise an interesting question as to what kind of circuit they use in minor league parks.  It's probably not worth it to drop a dedicated line with QoS, but I would think they could do better than ISDN.

Al, you're in broadcasting.  Any idea what the circuit is between HoHoKam and the station?

by Jed Taylor on Mar 2, 2007 2:28 PM CST up reply actions

I have no idea.
However, Ho Ho Kam has a modern press box (ten years old), so there's no reason they should have this sort of trouble. There must be a problem down the line somewhere else. Remember, this is also the visiting team's feed, so whatever they're using is not any sort of permanent setup.

I read through the comments, and some people here are getting too emotionally involved and/or reading too much into the importance of this game and flying off the handle. As I said before, the first week is like a glorified practice. If the Cubs suck during their run in vegas, then I'd worry.

re: Problem is...
I'm kinda intrigued by the idea of platooning Jones with Derosa in right and letting Theriot play second when DeRosa is in the outfield. This would not only restrict Jacque's at-bats to righties only, but maintain DeRosa's versatility, which may suffer if he only plays second base.

todays kspn broadcast
thus may be a dumb question, but can you listen to out of town broadcasts during the regular season online or does mlb black them out to make folks buy their package?

usually
you have the option to listen to either broadcast when available. The ads stated no blackouts on audio.

out of town games
i meant can you listen to out of town broadcasts on line INSTEAD of buying the package.

by clrkaddison on Mar 2, 2007 4:24 PM CST up reply actions

mlb gameday audio
you can buy the radio streams at $14.95 for the entire year. That gets you every game of every team and you get to choose which team's announcers you want to hear, unlike the video.

by cashcowsquirtingsourmilk on Mar 2, 2007 4:29 PM CST up reply actions

mlb audio
i'm trying to avoid mlb audio.  can i listen to games on line for free if the local team webcasts during the regular season or does mlb audio prevent this, forcing you to buy their package instead?
for instance, i am listening to the feed from kspn directly from their website, completely avoiding mlb audio.  during the regular season, is this still possible, or does mlb prevent webcasts unless they come from their (mlb audio) feed?

by clrkaddison on Mar 2, 2007 4:47 PM CST up reply actions

today's audio
is an exception. I've never heard it like this. They're just having tech problems. $15/year is a bargain. I wish we had it years ago. It's literally a dream come true.

by cashcowsquirtingsourmilk on Mar 2, 2007 4:50 PM CST up reply actions

You can go to the Boston Red Sox website, and buy a membership in Red Sox Nation for $14.95.

That includes a few Red Sox trinkets and discounts, as well as MLB Audio.
