Wednesday Morning Heads

You're getting this early because, weather permitting, I'll be leaving early in the morning to go see beautiful Wrigley Field. I promise not to boo Jacque Jones; I make no guarantees about any of our relievers.

Scott Eyre says his newfound association with suck has nothing to do with Dusty Baker. Bob Howry said essentially the same thing yesterday. For now, Lou isn't giving either of them the Brad Lidge treatment.

Also, it seems like Floyd DID finally sneak up and steal Murton's plate appearances. Whaddya know.

The Wizard of Iz and Soriano both appear to be having problems with fielding the ball. Soriano can be excused, or moved to right, depending on how you feel about such things. Izturis, on the other hand, was brought in mainly because he's supposed to make those sorts of plays. If you would like your option for next year picked up, Izzy, you had better provide some evidence that you're better than Ronny Cedeno.

Rick Morrissey is right -- you cannot rearrange the whole baseball season because of one cold snap. I agree with Joe Sheehen of Baseball Prospectus; the problem isn't the cold, it's the unbalanced schedule making it hard to reschedule games that's the problem. [Subscription required.]

And if you think the weather's unseasonably chilly, you should see Lou's temper. I don't expect either to last, though.

Good luck with the weather...
... it sucks at this moment. I'm about to make a main-page post about this.

If you're going to be in the bleachers, stop on by and say hi.

Cold weather
I hate to agree with Morrissey, but I think he's right.  If you're going to play a 162 game schedule, you've got to have games in April.  You can't schedule the first month in warm weather cities or cities with domes, because it's unfair to those teams in the summer, when they're on the road (and lose tickets from fewer walk ups during warm weather games).

Of course, there are some places, like Minnesota, that should have planned on a dome or a retractable roof because, more often than not, it's going to be miserable weather in April, May and September.  Much like Wrigley.

You can't schedule the first month, no...
... but maybe the first week, and maybe don't schedule, say, a dome team to play a warm weather team the first week.

There are ways to do it, minimizing the exposure of northern cities the first two weeks of April; that much, I think they could at least look into.

Good idea
But the problem is that sometimes during the first week, the weather is actually wonderful in northern cities (see Chicago the week before baseball season started) and then turns crappy later in the month.

Heck, I remember going to an early June game bundled up because it hadn't warmed up yet.  Not April bundled but not July unbundled.

one season
Can anyone remember the last time it seemed this bad?  This is just one year, and there shouldn't be any drastic changes just because of one bad spring.

I've seen a lot of cold Aprils...
... but this is just about the worst. Consider: the Rangers had a series last weekend in which they had their two coldest games ever, and also their coldest Opening Day ever.

This is VERY unusually cold and wet.

Well, I wish the weather you
