Take Your Finger Off The Panic Button

Now that was more like it, wasn't it?

There are a lot of good things to take out of the Cubs' impressive 7-0 win over the Reds today:

  • Rich Hill was getting squeezed all over the minuscule strike zone today; despite issuing four walks, he had enough good stuff (particularly that nice, nice curveball) to keep his team in the game for seven innings, allowing no runs
  • The Cubs executed a perfect squeeze bunt (take that, Dusty Baker, and had Cesar Izturis not fallen down in the batter's box, he might have beaten it out, too)
  • Derrek Lee, working on a ten-game hitting streak, cleared the bases with a double that put the game out of reach
  • Ryan Dempster, not working in a save situation, put the Reds away on ten pitches (nine strikes) in the ninth inning, ensuring that he could still be available for save duty tomorrow
  • And best of all, on a frigid 46-degree day when the sun peeked out for a few minutes and then thought better of the idea, the teams played in a snappy two hours and twenty-four minutes.
Mark accompanied me for the first time this year, and this kid, who would walk out of the house in a T-shirt and shorts in this kind of weather if I'd let him, had to have me buy him a Cub knit cap, and admitted that he could "hardly bend his knees" walking back to the car. We collected about 150 scratch-off cards for today's second-chance giveaway of an iPod Nano, but, sad to say, we did not win. I did see a group of women down near the entrance scratching off cards, getting all excited when one of them did find a card that said "You are a winner!" So, yes, people actually do win these things -- one of the better giveaways at the ballpark. And, not a single one has yet shown up on eBay, either.

I'm betting that some of tomorrow's giveaway -- a Lou Piniella bobblehead -- will be a popular item on eBay by the end of the day.

I was one of Rich Hill's biggest detractors last year, as most of you know. I'm on the bandwagon now -- I'm one of his biggest backers. He's been the best pitcher on the staff, not only so far this year, but for the last six weeks of the woebegotten 2006 season, too. Something happened to him during his two months in Iowa last year, and he has managed to translate the dominance he showed for two years in Triple-A to the major league level. Today, he didn't have his best stuff (and was getting squeezed) but still threw well enough to win, and that is the hallmark of a good major league pitcher. At 95 pitches (the scoreboard said 97) he probably could have come out to start the 8th inning, but with a lead that large, why bother?

I was also pleased that the Cub offense, which has really been struggling, took advantage today of every opportunity the Reds gave them -- of the five runs in the eighth, all were unearned against the team. However, the single run charged to Jon Coutlangus was earned to him, in a quirk of the rules -- because Coutlangus walked a hitter and he scored, the run is earned to him, but because the third out should have been registered before he came into the game, all the runs are unearned to the team; this is why you will occasionally see a total of unearned runs to a team, not add up to the same total as the unearned runs for all its pitchers.

Bad today: Alfonso Soriano. OK, so the guy had two hits and his first RBI of the year (on an infield single, of all things). And then, after being sacrificed to second, he got himself picked off. For the third time this week. This sort of thing has got to stop -- obviously, today it didn't mean much, but someone who's been in the major leagues as long as Soriano has, and is generally considered a good baserunner -- I can't figure out how he could have been so badly fooled so many times, so early in the year.

The announced crowd of 38,598 was late-arriving, partly because of the cold, and partly because of the continuing construction on the CTA Red Line. They are making announcements at the ballpark that people leaving the game and going north on the Red Line should walk three blocks to the Sheridan stop, and those going south should use the Addison stop. This makes sense, and will help speed things along after games are over. If you are arriving at the ballpark on the L this summer, allow yourself extra time, particularly later in the year when crowds are likely to be larger. In the house today it appeared to be about 30,000, although the bleachers were pretty full -- including quite a few green T-shirt-clad people whose shirts read on the back "Drew Wilkin's Bachelor Party", and on the front "Don't Do It Drew", which drew the ire of a woman sitting in front of us who wanted to go have a word with them.

Also sitting in front of us was a large contingent of Reds fans who were also Notre Dame students (we knew this because of the ND hats and sweatshirts they were wearing); at one point they tried to get a "We Want Samardzija!" chant going.

They'll have him soon enough. In the meantime, I think our club has found a new staff ace, and not a moment too soon.

strike zone
It's miniscule all right, and not just today. Part of baseball's ongoing strategy to stress offense as much as possible. Another barrier (along with the lowered mound, body armor for batters, more stringent rules about throwing inside, etc.) that keeps us from seeing many dominant pitchers these days.

hill was off. good sign i think that he can still get it done.

nope
you and danimal are both right. The zone was ridiculously small (but at least it was consistent), but hill was a little off: he was flying open a little early and wasn't completely finishing his pitches (when a pitcher consistently misses high and outside on their pitching arm side of the plate, this is almost always the cause).

Arroyo is a control pitcher as well, and he walked 3 batters or so against the hack-em Cubs. That zone WAS far too tight. For me, the definition of a "tight zone" is when umpires won't expand a few inches off the plate. This umpire (who was it anyway?) refused to call pitches on the black, let alone anything off the plate. My biggest problem with this umpire, however, was the fact that he wouldn't give Hill a called strike for his curveball is michael caught it a few inches low and outside (to lefties). If Michael catches the ball there on that big breaker, the ball obviously crossed the plate in the hitting zone.

This pissed me off for the entire game. As a fan of pitching duels, I hate the so-called "hitters' umpires".

Over the hill?
I don't know about that but Hill was Phenomenal today. Hitters made contact and the  fielder's didn't screw it up. Novel concept.

Let's hope they keep it up.

Welcome aboard. :)

Hill did do well today. He was a much needed breath of fresh air after such a lousy week.

I know some are telling us to give Soriano time but for the money he's getting I don't think we are asking for too much. I'm not impressed so far.

I could live with the slow batting start if he'd just STOP GETTING PICKED OFF BASE!

Of course, with Maddux there is always the problem of getting on base in the first place.

What is the old saying ...?
A great pitcher isn't made during those  afternoons when he has his best stuff, but rather, on those days he doesn't have it?

I'm not quite ready to abandon Z to the post-Cubs' ace pasture, but Hill has been on a very pleasant--and reliable--upwards spiral since the end of last year.

Nice, nice game.  But the team has gotta win more--preferably with Soriano's help!

The True Bright Sign
10 Games.

7 Games very SOLID solid pitching efforts!! What a surprise.

Taking away some boneheaded plays and pitching meltdowns, I figure AT THE LEAST the team should be 5-5. Possibly 7-3.

The culture of winning will take a while to absorb on the North side, and no matter how hard he tries, Lou will not be able to "will them" to W's.

Sitting on the 3rd base line near home, it was hysterical to watch D. Ward FLOP on home coming around to score from 2nd. What a HOOT!

Don't know
if this has been mentioned yet, but Baseball Prospectus (subscription required) points out that Michael Wuertz was only the 27th pitcher since 1960 to come into a game with the bases loaded and no one out and strike out the side.  That's four times rarer than a no-hitter.

Funny thing is that David Aardsma has already done it this season for the White Sox too.

Too bad it didn't result in a win.

Very similar to the home opener in '89 when Mitch Williams struck out the side with the bases loaded (I believe he struck out all three?).  The difference is I am pretty sure he loaded them by himself.

Yes - Williams did load them himself. It was his second inning of work (amazingly, closers then were expected to pitch more than an inning for a save. Williams had entered with one out in the 8th.)

Squeeze
I don't know if this was mentioned elsewhere, but it looked like the reason Izturis fell down while trying to bunt was that the pitch was pretty far outside, and diving away from him.  It was a pretty impressive bunt, given the location of the pitch.  His back foot (left) practically came across the base.  All in all, it was a very nice bunt on a difficult pitch to execute the squeeze.

Izturis had a bad game the other day, but it didn't cost the cubs a win. He's usually very steady. the only rap on Izzy (defensively) is his range to his right. He'll probably have less than 12-13 errors all this year starting every day. Theriot would look like Cedeno did last year, or worse. I think Izzy will be gone next year anyway.

TheRiot will get plenty of plate appearances. I think he should start at 2B half the time, or more, and he should get quite a few starts in RF as well.

I love how the team stepped up today...
and won a game that was as much ´must-win´ as you can get the first couple weeks of the season.  One day after our beloved lost in embarassing fashion and skipper vented his early frustrations, the team played a well-executed ballgame and finally got their first home win of the season.  I couldn´t love the small-ball more, even though I also surely miss Aram´s big bat in the middle of the line-up.  Anyone else puzzled as to how this guy put up the numbers he did with a bad wrist?  I just pray that it´s not serious.

But back to today, I´m hoping the squad can take a win like today and go on a little run now.  I firmly believe a team´s success throughout the course of the season is dependant upon how manu streaks you go on (this might not make sense), both good and bad.  Not that we got that little hiccup out of the way, whaddya say we string some victories together and get people scaring us now.

In his inner heart
Jones must be happy that someone else is taking heat for dumb base running.

I wonder if Soriano has to play at Wrigley for a season before he gets used to the place. I am at a loss to understand why a player with his experience is apparently falling asleep on the bases like Jacques did last year.

by JFCubFan on Apr 14, 2007 7:33 PM CDT reply actions

the pick-offs
sucks to see Soriano getting picked off like that, but it's not so much falling sleep as it over-aggressiveness. The 2nd time AS was picked off first, his eyes were wandering, yes. Some think he was peeking in at the signs and was frozen. the other 2 times he was being over-zealous and got caught leaning. On the one today, he beat the throw back to the bag but the SS (or was it the 2nd baseman?) blocked soriano's hand with his foot. Same with JJ last year- being too aggressive on the bases when running on a hit. With JJ last year it was more misjudgement than laziness or "falling asleep". Remember that those came early in the season and didn't happen again.

I don't think this will be a chronic problem.

Yeah what's up with the pick-offs?
That's 3 already this year isn't it? In yesterday's case, that could've been a huge mistake, getting picked off at 2nd with only 1 out. He would've scored and if today's game was close, that would've been the storyline. Fortunately it wasn't. I didn't see the game, but I'm guessing Lou wasn't too happy about that and if Sori keeps it up, I think our mega million dollar star and our Manager might have a heated dugout conversation. That's what I love about Lou, he doesn't tolerate bonehead plays and he doesn't care who you are, if it happens enough, he's gonna let you know and isn't afraid to make an example of you, even if it's through the media (Zambrano and especially Ohman Friday).

Did not see it, so thanks for write-up, Al.
Sounds like a nice turn around game for the Cubs.  I am glad that Theriot is hitting 2nd, but want him bumped up to 1 if he's going to be in the lineup and Soriano dropped down.

From my reading of yesterday's game in today's Tribune it sounds like Z let the misplayed ball in short CF really get to him?  If that's the case, the dude has got to check himself and start playing like a pro in every aspect of the game most importantly the mental aspect for him.  We should have 2 straight wins now if not for his immaturity.

From reading the box score, what I like about this game is Hill was taken out and Howry given the opportunity to get somebody out. Last 4 seasons in this situation, Hill would have been left in even if labored to 190 pitches, just so somebody could make their point about what constitutes toughness (or ignorance if you ask me)...In any event, Howry and Dempster got some use and Howry actually retired hitters--good for him!

With Floyd and Jones starting to hit some it looks like Murton is odd man out...Still, it's nice to have 4 capable OFs for a change on the roster.  I like Murton, but that's the breaks of pro ball.  He'll get his chance and he's got to stay ready.

by DudeVf11 on Apr 14, 2007 7:35 PM CDT reply actions

Soriano's speed
kept that rally going.  I really like hte fact that even though he's not hitting YET, he never stops hustling. I'm confident he's going to be huge for the Cubs before the season is over.

Izturis deserves all kinds of credit for making that squeeze play work, bunting successfully on a pitch that was way outside.  And Lou deserves lots of credit for sending Floyd on a suicide squeeze.  Nobody saw that coming.

I almost hate to write this, but given the sad history of Wood and Prior, I hope Hill's golden arm stays healthy.  That curve ball sure is tough on arms.

and hasn't had any major injuries to date. Obviously, pitchers aren't out of the woods until they retire, but frequently, injuries first occur during the formative years of pitchers' development if they're going to be injury prone (18-24 or so--the "injury nexus").

Looping curveballs are still easier on the arm than tight, hard curveballs, and I don't have any statistics to back this up, but according to conventional wisdom it's still much easier on the arm than throwing sliders (or slurves and screwballs for that matter).

At any rate, injury-susceptibility is a far greater determining factor for chronic injury than a pitcher's choice of offspeed pitches. For example, Cole Hamels is considered a high injury risk, and his bread-and-butter is a changeup.

Baby, you got a stew goin'

Curve balls aren't nearly as hard on your arm
As a lot of other pitchers, especially the torque of a hard slider.

Knock on Wood, no on second thought don't knock on Wood, I think Hill has a very healthy delivery. I'm more worried about Zambrano succumbing to the priorwood bug, than Hill. With Hill's change and now it looks like he's been working on a cutter, he's been changing the eye levels of hitters very well and throw in that gnarley curve to keep hitters honest and he could be quite the #2 pitcher.

Still early way too early though to make those kind of statements. He hasn't even been in the legue for a year yet.

Brr
Hill could not have started the 8th - Lou sent Ward to pinch hit for him in the bottom of the 7th, resulting in the bizarre scene of a lifetime utility man being intentionally walked for a man who hit over 40 home runs last year & has speed.

by goldstj2 on Apr 14, 2007 7:58 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah that was bizarre
If that wasn't some kind of statement man, I don't know what is. It wasn't for any strategical situations: there were 2 outs. It was purely just a matter of preference. The Reds would've rather faced Soriano than Ward. THat obviously was insulting to Soriano and hopefully that's something that'll get him going.

True...
... I thought it was partly a matchup thing -- that the Reds would have rather faced the RH-hitting Soriano than the LH-hitting Ward.

But it's still an insult to a 40-HR guy.

Stolen bases
Hill did pitch great, and did pick a guy off first, but has he always had such a slow delivery when pitching from the stretch. There were two stolen bases that barrett couldn't even get a throw off-one being the speedy Adan Dunn. This will have to change or teams will be licking their chops.

Re: Stolen bases..
I had the same thought, but actually the future hall-of-famer, Mad Dog, has a slow delivery when pitching from the stretch as well. With that in mind, if Hill can throw strikes and not walk batters maybe we'll be OK.
Hey Lou, we're long overdue.

I looked this up....
... after Dunn's steal.

It was his THIRD SB of the year. Who knew he had speed?

2nd Game
This was my second game of the year and I may get burned for saying this but the team just looks better than last year even if they have been losing of late.

Today, a little girl and her grandfather(I am assuming) sat a few seats to my left. The grandfather left the little girl alone in her seat after the first half inning and returned in the bottom half of the fourth with a beer. Is this an OK thing to do?

doesn't sound good does it?
I realize people wanna get up, stretch, use the toilet, stand in line for something to eat, but why the hell does it seem like people are up every 15 minutes?? That's what the vendors walking the aisles are for. Too many restless fans for some reason. Sit down and watch the damn game! the vendors will come to you!

I would disagree that Hill is our new ace, but
I am (temporarily anyway) living large given that I took Rich Hill over Barry Zito in my fantasy baseball draft.  I got called a homer for that one.  Two weeks into the season, he's got two wins and only allowed one earnie and Zito's got and ERA north of 8.  Here's hoping that holds up for 150 or so games.

In regards to the game, how about that 2 out rally in the seventh!  Even though Hill could gave started the eighth, I imagine Lou wanted insurance runs given that the lead was only 2-0 when Ward pinch hit for Hill.  That panned out pretty well.  Let's wrap it up tomorrow and get the rolling in the right direction.

Pinch hitting
for Hill worked out great. Good call by Piniella, though of course I would have liked to see Hill get a shutout. Hopefully, next time Hill will have a 6-0 lead and not have to be pinch-hit for.

He did get a shut-out
and threw 95 pitches, iirc.

why the obsession with complete games? We should be happy any time our starter throws 7 strong innings. that's the way it is, like it or not.

I am watching the Dodger Padre game
When did Schmidt lose his fastball? He's throwing 80-85 mph fastballs and getting shelled.
