Open Thread: Cubs vs. Reds, Monday 4/2, 1:10 CT

Hooray! Opening Day is here! Posting this early to get discussion going, and there is important news today.

Sam Zell's offer to buy the Tribune Co. has been accepted. What does this mean to the Cubs? We don't know yet, and may not for quite some time, because a deal this large, involving many different forms of media, will have to clear regulatory hurdles -- and then, Zell will have to decide what he's going to do with all the pieces. The article says:

Zell has said repeatedly he has no intention of breaking up Tribune. He may find it tempting to ease the debt burden by selling a prize like the Chicago Cubs, but those who know him believe a strategy that depends on massive cost-cutting or asset sales isn't Zell's style.
So -- the Cubs may have a new owner, sometime soon. There are some reports this morning that the team will be sold after the 2007 season. Until then, let's play ball!

A couple of notes: this is the 36th time the Cubs have played the Reds on Opening Day. They're 20-15 in the previous 35 meetings. And Aramis Ramirez and Derrek Lee will be the starting 3B and 1B for the fourth straight opener -- that's the first time the Cubs have had the same two players at those positions on Opening Day for as many years in a row, since Ron Santo and Ernie Banks did it nine straight years from 1962-1970. Finally, Carlos Zambrano will become the 12th Cub pitcher since 1900 to start at least three straight openers -- the last was Jon Lieber (2000-2002), and let's hope Z has a better day today than he did the last two years!

UPDATE [2007-4-2 9:52:29 by Al]: Here's the MLB.com Mediacenter for today. The game's also on XM 185, and if you are media-deprived but are near a computer, here's your MLB.com Gameday link.

Public Ownership
I remember at one point there was a discussion here about the idea of the Cubs being owned by the public, using the Packers ownership model in Green Bay as an example. For those of you who aren't familiar with what the Packers do I'll explain. When the team needs to raise funds, the team will sell stock in the team to the public. The catch is, that the stockis not tradeable. The idea is that the people buying the stock are the die hard fans who care about the team. Apparently they hold stockholders meetings once a year at Lambeau Field. Is it possible that such a form of ownership could work for the Cubs? I know I would buy several shares of stock.

interesting read. Using the most recent Packers sale price of $200 as a base it works out to 3,000,000 shares that would have to be sold if the team were to go for 600 million. Probably a little unrealistic... oh well.

I don't know -
The dollars and numbers of individuals may be possible, it would seem difficult to become organized to force Zell to take this approach seriously.  That being said, if you could approach Zell/Tribune with a committed $600M from individuals to purchase shares, they would have to listen and might like the positive PR.

Oh to dream.

mlbtv today-- question
Today's game is on ESPN2. I am outside the Chicago area. MLB.com's mediacenter appears to list today's game as available on mlbtv.com, but I have a sickening hunch that I might not have access b/c the game is on ESPN2 (and therefore is "available" in my  TV market). I do not have cable, so mlbtv is my only hope.

Any thoughts/information would be helpful. Thanks!

Thanks to you both
Well, I'll keep my fingers crossed. I'm working from home today, and I'll either watch or listen.

When I was in high school, I developed a friendship with the school's librarian over the course of a few years. This friendship, which continues to be a fond memory of mine, became especially important in April. On Opening Day, Mrs. Duncan would allow me to sign out one of the library's televisions, which I would roll from the storage room to one of the few private study rooms in the library and then watch the Cubs game. Now that is a quality curriculum!

I have a fond high school memory as well...
our yearbook staff met after school to work on the book and our advisor and a couple of us on the staff were Cubs fans. I remember walking into our meeting and the TV was on, tuned to WGN. It was never on before so I found it odd. My advisor said that Kerry Wood had like 12 strikeouts or something, pretty early in the game. Yes, it was THAT game, and we all sat watching the remainder in all it's beauty. And believe it or not, we didn't get much done that day.

Excellent!
Reminds me also of the fact that in 6th grade (fall, 1984), our teacher, a long-suffering cubs fan, took my entire class (25 kids) down to the woodshop classroom, where the woodshop teacher, also a long-sufferer, had a small tv set up on top of a table saw, and we all watched some of that 13-1 Game One of the NLCS.

As for that Wood 20k game-- I skipped out of work with my supervisor and another colleague that drizzly and cold day, and we got Terrace Reserve seats (3rd base side) and... well, what can I say that hasn't already been said?

Required?
I may be wrong, but I'd assume that when the Cubs, Sox, Bulls and Hawks went into the partnership and created CSN, there was some type of requirement of ownership. I imagine that they required that ownership remained in the hands of whoever owned the teams. Once you seperate team ownership and ownership in CSN, you create more combatting interests which seem to fly in the face of why CSN was started in the first place

What does
"Pound Sand" mean?  What's it in reference to?  I've heard it used often, and know what it's intended to convey, but I've often wondered where it came from.

by NO100 on Apr 2, 2007 9:32 AM CDT up reply actions

Pound Sand....
From the Urban dictionary:

The origin of the expression go pound sand is from a longer expression, not to know (have enough sense to) pound sand down a rathole. Filling rat holes with sand is menial work, and telling someone to pound sand down a hole is like telling them to go fly a kite. The expression dates to at least 1912 and is common in the midwestern United States.

Football and basketball are just things to do between baseball seasons.

I think...
... this is something that was already addressed in spring training, not only with Z, but the entire pitching staff. Every single pitcher walked far fewer hitters than they did, per nine innings, last season.

We're done with "Nibbles" Baker's philosophy.

mlb.tv
Last night's Cards/Mets game was blacked out on mlb.tv here in San Diego because it was "nationally televised" on ESPN2.  I see in the paper that our game is also on ESPN2 here locally, so I am guessing it will be blacked out on mlb.tv.

I think that's the lamest thing ever, by the way.  A huge portion of people that subscribe to mlb.tv do so in order to watch the games while working, where it is very rare to have access to cable tv.  Gotta keep those local advertisers happy, I guess.

by paulucla on Apr 2, 2007 10:05 AM CDT up reply actions

I really truly think that it will be on MLB.
ESPN has a contract with MLB to have exclusive broadcast rights to Sunday night games, and I believe Opening Night on Sunday is part of that deal (I think they're the reason for it actually). ESPN does not have exclusive broadcast rights for today, therefore, I think MLB.TV will show a local broadcast of the game (probably the Reds network).

Praying for Cuban...
Let's hope a guy who knows about turning around a team's fortunes gets his hands on this team.

Alternatively, I'd be loving a Bill Murray/Mike Veeck ownership group....and you know they'll be interested.  Plus, the Veeck family has a history (if comical one) in baseball, so approval by the owners might happen a little more easily...

That being said, let's have Carlos go out there, pitch a no-no, and raise the price on his being-negotiated contract a couple million....I'd gladly take that for a dominant start to the season....

Does anyone know how the roof closing at Miller Park works? or perhaps a better questions would be, if i drive to milwaukee this weekend, will i be warm? or will i need to dress like i'm at wrigley?

I wouldn't worry...
about it. If the weather is below 50 degrees, they probably won't even think about opening it, unless strong bright sunshine. I don't know the specific rules, but you should be OK.

sallies at Miller Park
Trust me you will be warm.  They are horrible at opening the roof on borderline days.  60 and sunny with a breeze and they'll close it if its April.  It really bothers me when this is done, because I think it should really be used for rain or temps less than 50 or 55.  But if its a sunny day and all you need is a light jacket, then open the fricken roof.  But if its anywhere near cold, for sure count on the roof closed.

More Cubs fans than Braves fans
In my 20 years in Atlanta there were always more Cubs fans than Bravos fans at the games. My best friend and I would go to the games and she was always outnumbered, in her home stadiums (Fulton County and the Ted). And we somehow always ended up sitting in an entire section of Cubs fans!

Enjoy the game! I'm trying to get down there for the June series.

Easy
I like Murton, but those were two awful at bats.  There's a difference between being aggressive and hacking at really bad pitches.  Nobody's giving up on him, just pointing out that he's gotta have better pitch selection if he's going to bat in the 2-spot.

by paulucla on Apr 2, 2007 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Murton got schooled
Harrang started him out with a fastball away and a fastball inside where Murton has a hole in his swing (his weakness is fastballs in) which resulted in him sppeding up his bat and Harrang pulled the string on him.

That's big league baseball Matt, hopefully you canhandle it.

Zambrano not an ace?
Well I said it in the off-season and got some heat for it, but this is exactly why I still would not consider Zambrano a true "ace". He's just too inconsistent, gives up too many walks and it's only the 3rd inning and hes already at 55 pitches!!

Zambrano is good but I still wouldn't put him in the elite class of true aces in this league.

The Crew..
is the class of the NL Central IMHO.

WiCubFan, I'm sure between
our very contrasting opening day experiences and the fact that we play the Crew this weekend might make this an interesting weekend. Luckily my roommate is going home this weekend, otherwise I could rest assure it would be ugly basing off the arguments we've had.

Cubs fans..
need to hope Mr Sheets develops one of his annual ailments. Otherwise I think their starting rotation is the best in the NL.

Grading the Lineup
Soriano - C- all that dough for 1 hit.
Murton - C+ No dough for 1 Hit, but a run.
Lee - A- needs an RBI for higher grade
Ramirez - D+ see Soriano and 2 LOB
Jones - C didn't expect anything, didn't get any either.
Barrett - D left his bats at home.
DeRosa - B even took a base on balls
Itzuris C+ he got a hit.
Zambrano Don't want to talk about it.

We didn't watch the same game.
I don't think anybody deserves higher than a B on a day where the only run scatched across was courtesy of an error, and guys were sweeing too freely and wildly to put together decent at-bats. It's early, but the bats were eerily silent. Murton deserves a D for the 3 strike out performance, which judging by last year, is hopefully an aberration.

Definitely a disappointing day...
...but there's nowhere to go but up from here. (Actually that's not true but let's not dwell on it, OK?)

I guess the only thing good thing I can say for Big Z is, for as bad as he was, he still didn't let the Reds score more than two runs in any inning. And he's still got that passion -- and now that he's got this whole opening day thing behind him, I have a lot of confidence that he will get better.

Harang had a great day, Z had a bad one. It's pretty much as simple as that. I still think the Cubs can take this series.

I didn't have the ball, bitch!

Another bright note...
at least they took him out voluntarily and he didn't get tossed!

Give the Reds some credit
I watched the game on Fox-25 Sports Ohio because I live in Ohio. Yes, but I have been a Cubs fan for many years. I thought Big Z had good stuff but was too wild and emotional. But that's Carlos.
Even when the Cubs were down 3-1, I thought they would pull it out.
Remember last year? The Cubs stomped on the Reds with 16 runs. Everyone thought we would have a great season. You see what happened.
So you can't base the season on what happens on opening day.
The Reds played pretty well, Harang pitched well and everything went their way.
Maybe it will be different on Wednesday.
 Go Cubs!

Apparently It Needs To Be Said
It was only one freakin' game people, give it a rest! Talk about doom and gloom. Lighten up.
