Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Reds, Wednesday 4/4, 6:10 CT

Man, I'm glad TODAY isn't the home opener, because this afternoon, it is 34 degrees with winds gusting to 30 MPH, and a few snow flurries are flying.

You know, typical Opening Day weather. By Monday it might be in the upper 40's.

Speaking of Opening Day, it was thirteen years ago today that Tuffy Rhodes hit three solo HR in the opener vs. the Mets' Dwight Gooden. The Cubs lost anyway, 12-8, and Rhodes hit only 5 more HR the rest of the year, before going on to play several years in Japan.

Tonight in Cincinnati, it won't be much better than that -- temperatures expected in the lower 40's at game time, dropping into the 30's during the game.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Ted Lilly
 T. Lilly
Cubs
vs. Bronson Arroyo
 B. Arroyo
Reds
15-13 W-L 14-11
4.31 ERA 3.29
160 SO 184
81 BB 64
28 HR 31
vs. Cin -- vs. Cubs

pitcher stats are 2006 season stats

Here's tonight's lineup, courtesy as usual of Bruce Miles:

Soriano, CF
Jones, RF
Lee, 1B
Ramirez, 3B
Floyd, LF
Barrett, C
Theriot, 2B
Izturis, SS
Lilly, P

Not thrilled with Jones batting second, but at least Ryan Theriot's getting a start.

Arroyo was just sick against the Cubs last year -- 4-0 in five starts, 1.01 ERA, five walks, 26 strikeouts, and two home runs. He's not likely to hit the HR again, since Glendon Rusch, his victim for both of last year's dingers, isn't on the roster any more.

I figure we owe him one. Or four.

Lilly has faced only four of the Reds before -- Jeff Conine (7-for-20), Alex Gonzalez (5-for-11, 1 HR), Scott Hatteberg (1-for-9), and Brandon Phillips (0-for-2). It's been stated that Lilly might, just might, be a similar pitcher to Arroyo, and having been in the heavy-hitting AL East before, might have success similar to Arroyo's last year in moving to the NL Central. Interesting theory, anyway.

The Cubs will be without Henry Blanco today, as he is in Florida to testify as a witness in the money laundering trial of his agent -- so Michael Barrett is it today for catchers, unless there's an emergency, in which case it's Matt Murton. Hope for no emergencies!

Here's today's MLB.com Mediacenter -- and if you're outside Chicago (or in certain areas within the Chicago area), you'll need this to watch today's game, as it is on CSN+, which is on CLTV in Chicago, but not on all local cable systems.

And, there's always MLB.com Gameday.

If you'd like the Reds fan perspective, check out our SBNation site Red Reporter. Yeah, I know Reds fans hate the Cubs, but JD at Red Reporter is a cool guy, so be nice if you go over there.

Meanwhile, The Employee is on the DL after all. Gee, what a surprise.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Henry Blanco
According to this Sun-Times article, there is a chance that Blanco could make the game today, though he may miss the first few innings.

I really don't want to see the Cubs forced to experiment with Orange Guy behind the plate. Experimenting with Jones in the two-hole is bad enough.

This is an oddly appropriate pitching matchup of two former AL guys.

And it isn't often I feel bad for Major League baseball players, but having to play in those temperatures does elicit some pity.

Payback time, Skanky Gnomish Reds.

Go Cubs!

What the hell is this??  This better be the only time all season I see this lineup.  Cuz Murton didn't have any hits or anything or play good D on Monday...grrr

Lily under the weather
FWIW, Will Carroll at Baseball Prospectus mentions that Ted Lilly has been fighting gastrointestinal virus for a couple days and is recieving fluids for it-- I won't link to it since it is requires password. Hopefully it doesn't limit Lily too much tonight. Sounds like the weather will be pretty miserable in Cincy tonight as well

Dang, Ramirez really likes hittiing at the GABP
Via MLB press pass: "Aramis Ramirez' 12 career home runs at the Great American Ball Park are tied for the most of any Reds opponent ... Houston's Lance Berkman also has 12 homers ... a complete list can be found on page 440 in the Reds' award-winning media guide.

Ramirez is a .331 (39-for-118, 12 HR) hitter in 29 games at the Great American Ball Park. "

Also, Arroyo owns Soriano (1-20)

by VS on Apr 4, 2007 4:37 PM CDT reply actions

So lemme get this straight...
We've got:

A missing backup catcher.

A starting pitcher with the stomach flu.

A left-fielder who can't run.

A lead-off man who can't hit the opposing starter.

A very questionable choice for our number two hitter.

And a massive cold front.

<dead silence>

this game is gonna be on MLB.tv???  I certainly hope so, I need a fix and I don't think they're gonna be showing the game in Argentina.  I suppose one good thing we have going for us is the plethora of LH hitters.  And by plethora I mean JJ and Floyd.  Time for Cliff to show why he always wanted to play for the Cubbies...

you can check your zip code somewhere on the mlb page to see if you get cubs games.

by lilkimmer77 on Apr 4, 2007 5:43 PM CDT up reply actions

well
that's strange. monday I put the cubs on mlb.tv to see which broadcast they picked up, and I got espn, at least for the small portion of the game I saw on there. sometimes when a feed is lost completely they switch to the other broadcast, but I didn't see that happen with the cubs games last year.

by cashcowsquirtingsourmilk on Apr 4, 2007 5:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Zip Code
I believe that the zip code is based on the billing zip code and not the zip code that you are currently located.  This is one of the many frustrating things regarding MLB.tv.  I never could get the Cubs v Reds last year because my zip was in a Reds blackout area.  Luckily the games were generally on the local Fox affiliate or on the radio!  Just FYI since its long after being useful to ya.

MLB TV and Comcast Thoughts
I don't understand this blackout stuff on MLB TV.  Is it only for home games?  I ask this because where I live, we don't get Comcast Sports Plus.  We get the regular one, but not the +.

As for the game, just walk Arroyo.

Go Cubs. There. Original enough for ya??

by Floyd on Apr 4, 2007 5:22 PM CDT reply actions

MLB Blackout rules are asinine
And outdated.  Sadly, it's just the way it is.

I'm in San Antonio, with Dallas a 4-5 hour trip away, and Houston a 3 hour trip away.  Of course, both teams claim my zip code as being part of their "viewing area".

The problem shows itself like it did when I tried to watch Rangers/Angels on opening night.  ESPN2 and MLB.tv were both blacked out, preventing me any way from watching the game because I don't get the Dallas myTV station (duh!)

Lineup
I think this lineup is much better than the one we ran out on Monday. By this I don't mean that the players are better, but on Monday we went 5 deep on righties before getting to a lefty, and we got eaten alive by a righty killer in Aaron Harang. This lineup has balance, and actually will probably do better.

On a related note, I've started to think more and more that while Murton is the better player overall, Floyd is the better player for this team. This is very unfortunate, but with righties at first and left and only one very crappy switch hitter, we need all the balance we can get.

About the black screen...
when I had it on double size, whenever I clicked on something else it went black.  Minimizing it and then bringing it up again restored it.  With it on normal 100% I'm not having any problems.  MLB.TV really does suck, but if you're not in Chicago, don't have Extra Innings, and don't know anybody who can set up a Slingbox, you're kinda screwed.

Speaking of Slingbox, does anyone use it?  How does that work compared to MLB.TV?  I think they both stream over the Internet, so I wonder how they are compared to each other.

but Premium seems to have a much better picture than the standard MLB.TV (which I've subscribed to since 2003, I think).

Others are reporting many problems with the Mosaic application (that lets you watch up to 6 games at once), but I haven't had any problems with it.

I'm also not in the Chicago area and travel a lot on business, so it's an ideal product for me.

The solid number 2 starter was what the team lacked all of last year. Lilly could fill the bill. All the same, it sure beats trotting out the minor leaguers we had to watch all of last year.

A Great game and WIN!
I loved seeing Pinella come out in the 9th to settle down Dempster, Baker would have never EVER done that.

I didnt like JJ Batting in the 2 hole, but I think Lou was doing an experiment with him there.

Lilly pitched a fantastic game, but something that Im not sure was mentioned above, (maybe it was) But the Play Lilly made at First base, involving Derrek Lee. That I think was a key play in the game. D. Lee is such an important guy on the club, and that out at first was huge.

Also, Dusty Baker subs De Rosa in the 8th inning where he gets the single to make it a 4 to 1 game. I really really like Lou, im so glad he is our manager.

All in All a great day!

Cubs By The Numbers

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way.
