Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

That's More Like It, and Open Thread: Cubs vs. Reds, Thursday 4/5, 11:35 CT

When BCB first started, I tried to write recaps of night games at night, right after they ended... and it turned out to be too much to do, especially with an early day game like today's.

So, this is what you'll find, most of the time when there's a game in a few hours as there is this morning - a combined recap/game thread.

And much has happened since last night -- not only did the Cubs win, 4-1 over the Reds, on a night better suited for football, but MLB and inDemand reached a deal to keep Extra Innings on digital cable.

Which means that Jessica owes me two more Big Gulps.

Well, of course, this deal means more than just Big Gulps for me. This is excellent news for all of us who have digital cable and didn't want to switch our entire service just to get EI. The games are, according to the above link, already available, and at this time, they're not going to be available on Dish Network. Here's what finally made this deal possible:

As part of the agreement, iN Demand and DirecTV each will receive about 16 percent equity in the new network, a person familiar with the deal said, speaking on condition of anonymity because that detail wasn't announced. Under the original agreement, DirecTV was to be a 20 percent owner.

In Demand will make the "Extra Innings" package available to other cable companies, which also would be required to carry the MLB channel. Baseball is willing to resume negotiate with Echostar's Dish Network, baseball spokesman Rich Levin said, but DirecTV president Chase Carey said he anticipated for now that his company would be an exclusive satellite carrier.

inDemand's EI website doesn't have a signup page or schedule yet, and I just checked my digital channels (I have Comcast) and don't see a schedule yet, but I assume they will have one up later on today.

Good news for all, and pressure from Congress, and from we the fans, helped make this deal possible.

And, last night's Cubs game was, we hope, a sign of the rest of the season to come. Ted Lilly threw seven excellent innings (101 pitches, 70 strikes, one walk, nine strikeouts) and Bob Howry and Ryan Dempster came on to do their respective jobs; Mark DeRosa had two hits and Aramis Ramirez three, the Cubs drew SIX of those base-clogging walks, and all in all, it was exactly the way all of us had envisioned positive things for the ballclub this year.

I still cringe when I see a ball hit Cliff Floyd's way, though. I haven't heard yet, but I'm pretty sure you'll see Matt Murton out there this afternoon. Incidentally, the lineup Bruce Miles had sent me yesterday was changed before game time, as you know from Bruce's post just before the game started. Ryan Theriot got in the game anyway, late, in left field, and even he had some trouble out there, though that was, more likely, due to the swirling winds and 39-degree temperatures.

Now, there's a game coming up in just a few hours, so let's move onward!

pitcher stats are 2006 season stats

Ah, yes. Jason Marquis. The guy who has probably had more angst spilled on this site this offseason than any other new Cub acquisition.

And yes, those 2006 stats look pretty brutal. But take a look at the numbers for his opponent today -- not that much better. Marquis had a decent spring, and the cold temperatures today ought to help him.

MLB.com Mediacenter for Thursday; the game is on CSN Chicago, and the usual radio outlets.

MLB.com Gameday

Finally, Jerry Colangelo is already starting to get the ball rolling to try to get a group together to buy the Cubs:

Former Phoenix Suns and Arizona Diamondbacks owner Jerry Colangelo reiterated his interest in buying the Cubs during a radio interview Wednesday and said he plans to meet with new Tribune Co. owner Sam Zell when Colangelo visits Chicago next week. "I'm planning to meet with Sam Zell and get acquainted," Colangelo said. "We've never met before. I know quite a bit about him. He's been very, very successful, and I think it's appropriate to at least start my process in terms of getting to know him a little bit."
Colangelo may have put the Diamondbacks into deep debt during his ownership there -- but they won. We'd all take that, right?

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Very impressed
with Lilly last night. Good command, kept hitters off balance, just a pitching gem. I hope this continues all season (it's reported April is his good month, let's hope it another good month!). And the big news of the night, although I'm not exactly sure the exact words used, Lou's trip to the mound when Dempster proceeded to walk the first batter. Short, sweet and to the point: throw strikes! Wasn't that refreshing? A cubs manager saying exactly what we were all thinking in the exact tone of voice we use. Lou, you warmed up this cubsfan with that no nonsense kick in the butt!

Lilly...
... reminds me, in his pitching style, of another Cubs lefty who wore #30... Kenny Holtzman.

Once Lilly pitches a couple of no-hitters, I'll agree!

Hotlzman/Lilly
A lfet-handed #30 - Holtzman was the first thing I thought of when I say Lilly.  From what I remember, Holtzman threw harder than Lilly.  Holtzman also came more from the side, a style that I, as a young lefty, tried to copy (but failed).

Loved the tongue lashing Pinella gave
Dempster in the 9th yesterday.  Naturally both downplayed it in the papers but it was pretty clear Lou meant business.  It was nice seeing Lou out there on the first visit rather than Rothschilde.  So much more to like with Lou sitting in the dugout.

As I mentioned in my unorganized diary,
dempster and lou said different things when asked what piniella said on the mound.  i think this is pretty much a give-away that the one-sided conversation was a little more censored than that.  regardless, i love the act.  if we win today, is that a winning streak?

I can read lips

Good job
pointing that out. It shows that Lou is in command and his player responded. On a different note, I think Lou has the darkest tan I have ever seen on a Cub skipper.

Brrr...
Bear in mind though that Lohse pitched in the AL Central for the most part last season.  Pitching to offenses on a regular basis like Cleveland, Detroit and the Sox will do that to an ERA.  On the other hand Marquis, pitched in the NL Central...

Lohse was a '96 draftee of the Cubs then traded for Rick Aguilera and Scott Downs.

IMHO Lohse is below average but like many other pitchers he will toss a strong game here and there.  I'm not impressed with Marquis at all though from what I've seen, granted that is limited to his sorry performances against the Sox last year.

That's all the past and what matters is how you do today.  Watch Lohse and Marquis duel in a pitching gem today.

by DrCrawdad on Apr 5, 2007 8:40 AM CDT reply actions

Lohse/Marquis
Lohse didn't pitch nearly as bad as his ERA last year.  He was a victim of some bad luck and had a low strand rate (65%).  He's pitching in launching pad now, so we'll see how that plays out.

Marquis on the other hand just wasn't very good last year.  Ideally, he will be serviceable this year and the Cubs will get a guy who can eat some innings and hopefully get a lot of run support.  If hitters hit the ball on the ground against him as much as they did in 2004 or 2005, he'll be okay.

Theriot
Uh, don't blame the winds for the way Theriot played three fly balls like they were hand grenades.  If Cliff Floyd is considered awful in LF, what would Theriot be considered....brutal?  He cannot be a defenisve replacement in the OF, plain and simple.

This is
where a player like Pagan fills that void. I only wish we had room on the roster for a Pagan or like for just this reason.

Pagan instead of Cedeno
I think they need to deal Ronny Cedeno-- and probably should have dealt him on the last day of Spring Training. Pagan is a better bench player-- more speed, provides OF defense, switch hitter. He's not great, but he's a better option that Ronny. I think this will happen in the next month or so.

by ExNorthsider on Apr 5, 2007 9:23 AM CDT up reply actions

You can't do that either
That would mean that Theriot is the only backup for 2B, SS and 3B.  The Cubs are going to have to address this at some point.  The two options that I see are:
  • Get rid of either Ward or Floyd and bring back Pagan.  Their defensive limitations hurt the team's flexibility.  You can't have two of these guys on the team.  Of course, Floyd's likely trip to the DL would fix this problem.
  • Get rid of one of the bullpen pitchers and bring back Pagan.

A question
How much did The Riot play OF in spring training?I have heard he can play a serviceable outfield but Ive seen some of the over 40 yrd old women on my company softball team make easy catches look prettier. (Ladies, no offense intended, Im just saying a 20 something yr old professional athlete should be able to make the game look easier than a mid-forties mother of three that sits at a desk all day).
Only 81 more losses and those stupid redbirds have a losing season.

by Dcubbienole on Apr 5, 2007 9:21 AM CDT up reply actions

The riot

led the team in errors in ST.  I'm not sure how many were in the OF.

No doubt in my mind that the Cubs have serious defensive problems in the OF.  You know it's bad when Jacque Jones will probably be the most reliable.

Murton, Theriot, Jones, and Floyd simply do not have OF arms and teams are going to figure out real quick that anything hit in the corners will always score that run from first.  We'll just have to hope their bats make up for it.

by salparadise23 on Apr 5, 2007 9:44 AM CDT up reply actions

I do agree....
... Theriot is still a work in progress in the OF. I, too, would have kept Pagan over Cedeno.

Ramirez
Ramirez was 3-5 last night. Did he have a multi hit game all last april? That's sarcastic, but if he can have a good april and continue to help marquiz, hill, and miller then this team can start the season on a really great not. Yeah not a profound statement but its my first comment.

by dkowal22 on Apr 5, 2007 9:18 AM CDT reply actions

Marquis
Very skeptical about Jason Marquis.  If he's smart he will be walking Adam Dunn several times today.  That matchup is SCARY.

by SleepyLaBeef on Apr 5, 2007 9:25 AM CDT reply actions

Dunn could very well be walked several times
considering Marquis has walked him 11 times in 32 AB's.  But as far as matchups are concerned, I'm more worried about Encarnacion who has 4 home runs and 7 rbi's vs. Marquis in only 12 AB's.  Dunn has has only 1 HR and 2 rbi's in 4 hits for a .125 BA vs. Marquis.  So that matchup is not as scary as you make it to be.
Go Cubs!

Top of the line-up
Soriano 1, Jones 2 just has to never be used again. I realize its two games. I understand that there are games when Soriano is going to get on base several times. But to start off the game, the Cubs need someone who is going to take a few more pitches, make some contact, and get on base.

I just think that we're going to see a lot of games with Lee and Ramirez getting on in the first after there are two outs.

agree 100%
i know soriano likes that leadoff spot, and the stats say he does better in it, but a lineup like, 1.theriot, 2.murton, 3. dlee, 4. aramis, 5. soriano, 6. jones, 7. barrett is a lot scarier in my opinion, by the time a pitcher gets to dlee he could easily have thrown 15 pitches already.  A high strikeout guy like jacque does not belong in the 2 hole no matter what, and especially not back-to-back with a fellow high strikeout guy.

As long as it's against RHP
I don't really have a problem with it.  Jones had a .358 OBP last year against righties.  Not great, but certainly better than what we saw last year out of the 2-hole.

by davidalanu on Apr 5, 2007 10:47 AM CDT up reply actions

well
thats basically the exact same obp murton had against the righties, but Murton should improve, and Jones should begin to slip a bit now, add in the fact that he's prone to the strikeout and I still dont like it.  If it is against righties and Floyd is starting over Murton Id rather have Barrett in the 2 spot rather than Jones.  Barrett had the same obp vs. righties and still wont strike out as much as Jacque.

by false cognate on Apr 5, 2007 11:48 AM CDT up reply actions

The problem
with NFL Sunday Ticket is that the broadcast networks who pay a large fortune to televise games on Sunday afternoon (CBS and FOX) don't want Sunday Ticket to be available in a lot of homes.  They want you watching your local affiliate's broadcasts.  Baseball handles this problem, as we all know, by simply not broadcasting Extra Innings on Saturday afternoon when FOX is broadcasting a game of the week.  But obviously this isn't possible in the NFL, because you'd end up blacking out every game.

While cable would love ST, you've got two powerful TV networks telling the NFL to keep it exclusive on DirecTV.  So I don't think this is going to happen anytime soon.  In fact, I'd bet that the NFL would be more likely to cancel ST than allow cable to carry it, although I think neither outcome is very likely.  Most likely it stays a DirecTV exclusive for a long time.

I only got to see the last two innings on TV, but I caught the 3rd-7th on WGN radio. it was great to hear pat and ron and I was SO pleased with Lilly.

I think it's great that the two biggest head-scratchers from the free agent signings this off season, Lilly and Meche, both came out in their first game and looked like aces. conventional wisdom just loves being wrong.

Lilly

I'll judge him after he's seen some of these teams a couple of times.  He has big advantage right now because few players in the NL have seen him.

Also, like what was mentioned earlier, there were at least 2, probably 3, flyballs that would have been easily HRs if not for the cold weather.

His control looked pretty good though.  Our pitching staff has gotten in way more trouble with walks than HRs the last few years.

by salparadise23 on Apr 5, 2007 9:57 AM CDT up reply actions

Exactly.
This is one thing I could never figure out about Dusty Baker. He didn't want his hitters "clogging the bases" with walks, but didn't seem to care if his pitchers did the same thing for the other team.

Throwing strikes and having command -- that's what makes for successful pitchers. Lilly had that last night.

  2. Thanks to Drew for pointing out that Marquis v. Encarnacion is today's truly scary matchup. Now I know when to really clench my buttcheeks.
  3. I do choose to cut THE RIOT at least a little bit of slack for last night's fly balls. That arctic wind was clearly affecting most of them -- particularly the one that ended the game. Yes, that's right. Only Randy Myers (112), Bruce Sutter (133), and Lee Smith (180) have had more saves as a Cub than Ryan Dempster.

Glad to see
that MLB EI is going to cable.  Living near St.Louis, I jumped the gun and switched to DirecTV when they first signed the deal.  With what I'm paying now, you would think I'd be kicking myself in the ass, but I'm very happy with DTV.

The setup for MLB EI is great (EI + Superfan, Gamemix, Strikezone channel), and with the ability to watch a few of the games each night in HD - It is definately worth it.  Not saying the same might not be available for cable, but overall, satellite puts together a great package.

I'm curious to the HD games though.  They only show you what those games are going to be until that week or a few days before.  Does CSN Chicago, CSN+, or WICU show games in HD?  I know WGN does occassionally, but they usually say this is only for the local viewers, correct?

In Demand Question
Long-time reader, first-time poster with a tremendously (perhaps) idiotic question...

I grew up six blocks from Wrigley and now live outside of D.C so in-demand is a great option for me.  Why would Al or other Chicagoans subscribe to InDemand?  Is it to you can watch and any all baseball games?

I'm just curious since the only interest I have is in seeing Cub games.

by rooreed22 on Apr 5, 2007 10:51 AM CDT reply actions

Right....
Since they get all the local games on CSN, CSN+, WCIU, I'm assuming it would be for the hard-core fans who want to keep up on any/all teams, or the multi-league fantasy players....

Colangelo
pretty much ruined the Diamondbacks.

Of course, he did it by overspending by a fortune and winning a World Series.

I think we'd all take that sort of "ruining."

by Josh Timmers on Apr 5, 2007 11:04 AM CDT reply actions

Ruined?
They've recovered quite a bit and should contend for the West this year.  I realize they have a few back loaded contracts to pay off but they did win a World Series because of them.

They also only drew 2,091,005 fans last year.  I'd imagine that those back loaded contracts would be a bit easier to pay off with 1,000,000+ more tickets, hot dogs, and 3,000,000 more beers sold.

I'd still rather see a single person buying the Cubs rather than an ownership group.

If only I had Bill Gates money....

by Kornchex on Apr 5, 2007 11:14 AM CDT up reply actions

And one of the reasons...
...  a new Cubs ownership could do that, is if they had Wrigley Field, which attracts fans even if the team is losing.

Barrett's approach at the plate has been maximum terrible so far.  Swinging first pitch every trip.  Think about it:  He's thrown a lot of pitches, they have a terrible pen, and you're 0-for-the year so far with like 7 flyouts.  Take a fricking pitch or 2.  Lou should have a few words with the boy.

Perhaps
Barrett got Al's invitation to join BCB and he's thinking more about what he should say on his first post than what's he doing on the field.

If that's the case, then it's no wonder he's struggling.  Even superhumans stumble under such pressure.

at himself. He pulled Marquis when Marquis was on a roll. Pitch count couldn't have been the reason, as he'd only thrown 82 pitches. I hate when a guy gets pulled and then watches the bullpen blow it. Now maybe there's a great reason Piniella had for pulling Marquis - maybe he had a blister or something - but otherwise, I fail to see the logic.

Lead off single by Soriano. Picked off 1B.
next hitter singles. PR steals 2nd base. PR out at 3B on bonehead baserunning.
Next hitter Lee singles.

Then the wild pitch to put runners at 2nd and 3rd and then PASS ball to score a run and hitter advances to 2nd.

that's vintage Cubs.

When you're not a major league player, you swing at pitches like that.  Cedeno is not a major league player.  The sooner he is off the Cubs roster, the better.  He offers nothing.  No speed, no defense, no hitting...nothing.  In fact, Izturis is light years better than he is whether he hits .100 or .300.

Lou is pulling a Dusty
What is he thinking?  Not only does he waste our last RH reserve (he already used Theriot to pinch run and play LF), but there's no way that Cedeno is a noticeably better hitter than Floyd against LHP.  Just a stupid stupid move.  Floyd's only asset is that he's a hitter.  Yes, he doesn't hit lefties well, but NEITHER DOES CEDENO!!!

You play...
... for the tie at home, the lead on the road. And to get to extra innings, you need the freaking lead.  The players came unglued in the seventh. This is the reason, along with an insurance HR, that the Cubs will lose this game. With the top of the order due up in the 9th, there is no reason to hold onto pinch hitters.

Your assumption
Is that we gained something by using Cedeno.  We didn't.  Floyd was just as good an option versus LHP as Cedeno.  And given that, IF we had gone to extra innings, we might have needed that extra body.

There is no reason to use another pinch hitter if that new pinch hitter is not an improvement over the previous one.

The sad thing is we drafted a competant 25th man in Josh Hamilton and Hendry let him go in favor of keeping the likes of Cedeno, Pagan and the rest of the weak hitters he loves to collect.

Being a Cubs fan for over 30 years
there's one thing I know for certain in life and that's bad baseball teams. Sure it's only 2 games but this team has shitty stamped all over it.

Same 'ol terrible fundamentals (all spring too and surprisingly hasn't magicaly disappeared) and bonehead players with no heart.

 You're just in denial.

Shitty bullpen to boot.

If you expect  Lilly and Marquis to pitch like they did the last 2 days your sadly filled to the rim with false hope pal.

I too...
Was at least hoping to see better fundamental play from the team.

It is quite discouraging, and I am positive Lou did not know what he was getting into when he signed up for the job. Theriot in the OF? Barrett catching? Soriano in CF? Cliff Floyd in the OF Anywhere?

I mean - come f'ing on!

And - is Howry tired already? The guy was a total lockdown (when his career rejuvinated) with Cleveland.

Speaking of sounding like an idiot I'm not the one "predicting" 78-88 wins. WTF kind of a window is that.

78 wins is a shitty club

then you  have 88 games which would likely make the playoffs in this Division.

Which one is it pal? I'm the idiot?

"What's it all about? Booze, Broads and bullshit." Harry Caray

by lemon17pie on Apr 5, 2007 2:47 PM CDT up reply actions

78-88
that's because it's IMPOSSIBLE to predict the wins. that's the whole point. I didn't make an actual prediction. I don't know what's going to happen. I DO know that it's silly to freak out over every bad at-bat or bad pitch, etc, which is what too many people do on here.

I'm already on record as saying my main concern is the pitching. that will make the difference. Lilly and Marquis won't keep this up, no.

re: All talk. Bunch of Bullshit.
C'mon, man, Cedeno was showing this team a lot in spring training. I know those games don't mean anything, but he clearly demonstrated he has some offensive skills. He just can't bring them to bear in the major leagues. And that's what I was saying -- if he came through in the clutch here, in a real game he would have established some sort of comeback. Didn't happen.

re: Typical "glass Full" Cub Fan
I never said the glass was full. I clearly made that comment about Cedeno as he was batting. And if he had driven in those runs, I'm guessing the mood around here would be considerably brighter.

That said, I haven't given up on this team. Clearly, there's a lot of room for improvement and a lot of old, bad habits seem to be coming back to haunt them.

But Marquis was good. We're getting offense from players (DeRosa, Izzy) we weren't expecting to. And, hell, it's freezing cold out there and the third game of the season -- so it's not surprising to see low offensive output. (I know, I know...the Reds managed to hit. Well, it's their home field and our bullpen obviously fell to pieces.)

I'm as disappointed and frustrated as anyone. And let me make clear -- I'm not saying Cedeno is a great player (or even a particularly good one). But he's young and has, at times, shown potential. He just continues to fail this team in key moments, as did pretty much everyone today.

I didn't have the ball, bitch!

Enough Relief Walks
Is there anything worse than a reliever coming into a game and not throwing strikes?  I've had it.  I'm tired of watching Cubs reliever after Cubs reliever enter the game and throw ball after ball.  It's bad enough when starters walk guys but it is intolerable when relievers do it late in games.  Look, last year only 34 guys that qualified for a batting title in either league managed to hit .300 or better.  Let me repeat, 34 guys.  Now, it would be foolish to state that hitters in the .270-.300 range can't be considered good hitters but I'd certainly take my chances 7 times out of 10 by throwing strikes.  I thought the days of Roberto Novoa were over...Eyre proved otherwise today.

NO MORE RELIEF WALKS....

Nice inning
Check swing strikeout.  Foul popout.  Groundout.  Way to bounce back and make a game of it.

Truthfully this is about the worst possible formula for a game:  Great performance from overachieving starter.  Tons of offensive missed opportunities and bad baserunning.  Bullpen in, multiple wild pitches and amateurish defensive plays, lead blown, game over.

It doesn't get much worse.

Boy, season's over, huh?
I was more pissed about the opener than this one.

Marquis looks to be competent. The bull pen, which we know to be decent just didn't do it today. That pick-off of Soriano was a killer, as was the caught stealing.

The offense hasn't even gotten untracked yet.
Calm down. I also think Pagan needs to be on this squad, too. Cedeno in AZ might have been a mirage. Swinging at that 2-0 was miserable.

You leave all those men on base, that's to be expected, you are probably gonna lose. Most of those LOB came after 2 were out. But if Marquis can keep these types of outings up, the offense picks up, things will be OK.

This is just what happened to the Dodgers against the Brew Crew. Not much offense, and they have a good line-up. (Of course, weather wasn't a factor there.)

My guess is the bats heat up under the roof of Miller Park, and Z rebounds, since it's not opening day.

only 82 pitches for Marquis and he was pulled. I think Lou should've left him in for the seventh just to see and have a righty and lefty warm up during the inning.

As far as wild pitches, passed balls and base running errors I definitely think Lou will be addressing that in the clubhouse whereas Dusty would be passive about it.

It's games like this when you realize, atleast people that aren't guzzling the kool Aid by the container, that this team still has A LOT of weaknesses and to those of us who knew this coming in and had hoped that through the magic of Lou or just plain denial or false hope of a new season, today was a mjor wake up call, that the weaknesses that has plagued this team the last 3,  especiallythe last 2 seasons, which was the catalyst for absolutely miserable seasons are still present.
