Open Thread: Cubs vs. Brewers, Friday 4/6, 7:05 CT

Man, it's cold here in Chicago. The White Sox postponed their game at the Cell at 10:30 this morning.

And in Milwaukee tonight, the forecast is for temperatures falling into the low 20's with snow flurries. Fortunately, that doesn't matter, as Miller Park's roof will be tightly closed (well, at least as tight as it gets -- it's been known to leak in the past). Supposedly, the air inside is heated to about 30 degrees above the outside temperature, which will still make it only in the mid-50's inside the dome tonight.

 Today's Starting Pitchers

Hill, p Bush, p

lineups as always courtesy of Bruce Miles

This will, oddly enough, be Hill's second consecutive regular season start vs. Milwaukee -- he also faced them last September 27, threw well, but left behind 2-1; the Cubs eventually won in the last of the ninth. How many times did they do that last year? Incidentally, take a look at how they tied that game up in the 9th.

I know, I know -- all of us don't want Jones hitting second. But he has hit well vs. Bush in his career -- 7-for-25 with three doubles and two HR. On the other hand, Matt Murton, who isn't playing tonight, is 5-for-12 against Bush with a double and two triples (!). So go figure.

If you want to go you can still get pretty good seats online, although I'd expect to see about 30,000 tonight (the Brewers drew about 20,000 or so for their two dates after their home opener, and you'd expect that to go up about 50% for a Cubs date).

The Mediacenter has the usual suspects, though this game is widely available on WGN, and should be on Extra Innings, too. If you're away from your TV but have your computer, there's always MLB.com Gameday.

For the Brewers perspective check out our SBNation site, Brew Crew Ball.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Be thankful for the roof
I've been 'watching' the Indians home opener on mlb premium - they've had to delay an hour, got an inning in, a snow delay, and then two more pitches before another snow delay.  Coming down hard in Ohio.

The Cubs website has Zambrano pitching saturday and Miller on sunday?  Is this to play a matchup?

And ...
... there's another one next Thursday, which is why they should have gone with a four-man rotation the first two weeks, left Angel Guzman to make a couple of starts at Iowa, and had an extra bat on the bench (Angel Pagan, perhaps).

I really like that idea
I mean when you have so many off days, you can get away with it, esspecially when you take your pitchers out early like Lou has done so far this season.  And when he takes them out, they are still pitching well and strong, with an exception for Opening Day which was a rare defeat over Zambrano

Attendance
Took the Miller Park tour today - according to the electronic board in the service area, they are estimating 28,000 for tonight.  Apparently there are only scattered singles or obstructed view seats available for the rest of the weekend.

Line-up
Im gettin tired of some of this.  Lou is playing
Murton very much, and I think Murton should be in the 2-hole, but JJ will be ok, not good or great though.  I am very excited for Rich Hill tonight, as he is on my fantasy team as a late round sleeper and he's one of my favorites.

I'm looking for
a 'well-played' ballgame tonight.  Of course I would love for my team to go 162-0, but realistically, ball clubs are gonna lose games like our last in Cincy.  Poop happens.  Like I said before, I was more upset with the way the team came out in the last innings (no urgency on offensive side).  Almost seemed complacent with 1-run lead.  Anywyas, as I was saying, I'd like to see the team execute for 9 (maybe 8) innings of baseball.

Let's go boys
It would be nice to see them get the runners on base in.   The past 3 games they've left 27 guys on base, and we can't afford to have that too often.

Sure it's the start of the season, be we need them to get those guys home.

Come on boys let's win this one and get rolling.  Hill you the man tonight.

As a side note,
saw in box score that Sammy had a 2-out RBI in a nice win over BoSox today.  Funny, cause all I can seem to remember are 2-out K's on breaking balls from him.

but everyone here is disregarding the fact that Hill has a recurring blister problem, which can be a chronic pain in the ass for some pitchers. Just ask Josh Beckett. Hill had blisters on several occasions this spring, and had them last season too. This is cause for some concern, IMO.

hopefully, wood can take time off...
his busy DL schedule to pitch a few games. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Miller traded and Guzman starting at some point this season. We still have other insurance in the minors if Guzman reinjures himself: Marshall is waiting in the wings, and Gallagher is really quite close to being ready (in fact, I'm somewhat surprised they're starting him in AA). Ryu also would have made a good option for a callup if we hadn't traded him for a whole lot of nothing. Marmol and Mateo are also secondary options.
Baby, you got a stew goin'

by Thelonious on Apr 6, 2007 9:20 PM CDT up reply actions

by cashcowsquirtingsourmilk on Apr 6, 2007 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Unfortunately, you're the only one
I don't even think Wade Miller believes Wade Miller has a good chance at a cy young. His velocity is down, and he'll always be injury prone. But he's a veteran starter with an excellent hook, which makes him one of the best pieces of trade bait that the cubs have.

I actually think we'll struggle against capuano more than sheets. He didn't give up a single run against the cubs in three starts last year.

Just got home from the game...
man that was fun.  I sat 2nd row behind the Cubs' on deck circle, I have some pretty good pictures of the guys there.  Hill looked awesome (obviously).  Spotted his fastball very well, the curve had some great bite.  You really appreciate what he can do to that ball when you see it up close, the ball literally just drops.  So cool.  I was surprised to see a few players interacting with a Brewers fan heckler in front of me.  Soriano especially, he would turn and just flash that smile at the guy when he kept yelling that Soriano was overpaid.  Another observation: Cliff Floyd is huge and hits the ball like it slept with his mother.  Hmmm, what else?  Couple bad calls from my view: DLee did not pull his foot at first, and I thought the first play at the plate late in the game was safe (I can't remember who the first runner was... ARam maybe?)  All in all, a great game, and I look forward to watching the pitcher's duel tomorrow and going back Sunday for the series finale.  Go Cubs!

the call at 1B was wrong, the play at the plate with Aramis was right- pretty sure. the throw beat him plenty at least. I hope Quade didn't go to the wavin' wendall school of 3rd base coaching.

tomorrow looks better for the cubs than sunday, but who knows.

Wow!
The activity on this board for the 4th game of the season is far more impressive than Hill's performance...And Hill was awesome!

The hill start impressed me much more
As this board doesn't have me salivating like a man whom I know as Tim Tendry over a box of doughnuts, which is the sensation that Hill's start just gave me.
Baby, you got a stew goin'

My thoughts on the game...
I'll tell you what, when you have a group of talented individuals (in any sport), and those individuals play to potential, it's a fun thing to watch.  Hill, absolutely nasty, nothing more has to be said about that.  Watching the offense blow up like that was phenomenal because (besides Derosa homer) the runs were maufactured, all starting with the Fonz hitting a good breaking-ball pitch for a double.  Speaking of the Fonz, watching him take charge in center field was extremely encouraging, don't know about anyone else but he looks comfortable out there to me.  We'll see what happens when he has to deal with some of the tougher outfields around the NL (Wrigley included).

Let's see.... other highlights, oh yeah, how could I forget, Cliff Floyd smacking the ball around like the thing's teed up, man that guy can hit.  And lastly, I loved seeing the guys have fun, like when Aramis was giving grief to JJ when he almost got thrown out at 2nd (which wasn't his fault by any mean).  Gotten pretty good at Spanish down here in Argentina, I believe he was playin around with him sayin "vamos, vamos", translated to something like "come on, let's go", in the joking manner of course.  Can't wait for the game tomorrow, I have a feeling we're not gonna get the same kind of offensive outburst tomorrow, but ya never know.  I predict 4-2 cubbies, highlighted by a DLee home-run.  Til then

Hill threw three straight breaking balls, but dropped to a lower, sidearm slot to finish off Fielder.
"It was like a slider," he said. "A drop-down slider."
When asked why he never talked about it or showed it before, he made a hush-hush gesture and smiled.
"(Don't want) to show all your cards," he said.
