Open Thread: Cubs vs. Astros, Monday 4/9, 1:20 CT

Today, it doesn't matter how cold it is.

Well, yes it does, but it's still Opening Day at Wrigley Field. This forecast says it'll be mostly cloudy and 42. This one says we may have some snow flurries. At least it won't be like it's been in Cleveland, where the entire first home series was postponed due to heavy snow. What this will likely do is have the schedulemakers avoid playing home games in Cleveland the first week of 2008 -- and then, of course, it'll probably be in the 70's there next early April.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Ted Lilly
 T. Lilly
Cubs
vs. Woody Williams
 W. Williams
Astros
1-0 W-L 0-1
1.29 ERA 5.79
9 SO 0
1 BB 2
0 HR 0
vs. Hou -- vs. Cubs
Lilly has faced only a few of the Astros, mostly in interleague play. Mark Loretta is 5-for-14 with 2 HR off him, but he's handled Cub-killer Carlos Lee well -- 2-for-14.

Expect Cliff Floyd to perhaps get the start in LF today, as he has pounded Williams during their matchups: 14-for-30 (.467) with two doubles and two HR. Williams is 40, although he seems older. He was a member of the 1993 Blue Jays, who won the World Series, though he wasn't on their postseason roster. Among his teammates that year, his rookie year, were Jack Morris, Paul Molitor and Joe Carter.

The Astros have gotten off to a slow start, and got beaten up pretty badly by the Cardinals over the weekend -- a team that had been outscored 20-2 in its own opening series. With the cold weather today, expect it to be a pitcher's day.

The Mediacenter has the usual availabilities; the game is also on WGN-TV, and FSN Houston, the normal local radio outlets and XM 185.

MLB.com Gameday

And, as of posting time there appear to be some tickets still available, including bleachers. The Cubs had a losing record -- 36-45 -- at home last year. Time to start changing that.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Definitely need a win today!!
It would not be a good omen to lose the home opener to Woody Willams.
Hey Lou, we're long overdue.

If we don't take at least 2 of 3 in this series
I will be very disappointed. We are facing a triumvirate of shitty pitching.

Amazing that Opening Day
tickets are still available - lingering memories from last season or simply too cold?

If I were in Chicago I could have have purchased a seat in section 234 this morning according to chicago.cubs.mlb.com.

Lou's Moves
Uh Oh.

Some of Lou's moves are beginning to reflect the fears that many of us had for him.  It appears that Murton is already falling into the Black Abyss of greatly foreshortened playing time.

by frustratedfan on Apr 9, 2007 10:27 AM CDT reply actions

At least in this case...
He's being replaced by a guy who can really hit.  Cliff Floyd is no Todd Hollandsworth.

by SouthernCub on Apr 9, 2007 10:29 AM CDT up reply actions

no, lou is making the correct move
We're facing a righty (one that floyd is hitting close to .500 against). How can you possibly find fault with that? We know for a fact that lou likes to play matchups, and I'm sure he didn't think twice once he saw floyd's numbers.

At any rate, a healthy cliff floyd is probably a better hitter than murton at this point in their careers. Plus, on days that floyd starts, we have a good righthanded pinch hitter coming off the bench as a complimentry option to ward.

Baby, you got a stew goin'

by Thelonious on Apr 9, 2007 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed
Murton is a good young player.  But against RHP, he's the second-best option (and by a good margin) in LF.  Floyd can really crush the ball against RHP.

Now, if Murton consistently loses at-bats against LHP to Floyd and Jones, then I'll complain.  But at this point, I'd take Floyd over Murton (against RHP) any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

by SouthernCub on Apr 9, 2007 10:52 AM CDT up reply actions

Putting the stats aside for the moment..
there was really no way that Lou wouldn't have local boy Floyd starting the home opener. Especially when this was a supposed childhood dream.

by Damen Jackson on Apr 9, 2007 10:57 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't know about that
My early impression of Lou is that he strives to put the best possible team on the field at all times. That's what I like most about him.

If we were facing, say, Zach Duke (a pitcher that Murton has crushed, IIRC), I would be surprised if he started floyd over murton.

Baby, you got a stew goin'

by Thelonious on Apr 9, 2007 10:59 AM CDT up reply actions

Perhaps..
But I've expected him to make this start since his signing conference call. He was way too excited to sit this one out.

by Damen Jackson on Apr 9, 2007 11:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Kind of hard to argue...
one way or the other, since the starter is a RHP against whom Floyd has hit very well.

I suspect we'll see Murton play against LHP, and Floyd play against most RHP when healthy.  Stinks for Murton, since he's on the wrong side of the platoon.  But that's the best lineup for the Cubs, and as was said, it gives us a stronger RH hitter off the bench for most games.

by SouthernCub on Apr 9, 2007 11:13 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think it's going to be a straight platoon
since floyd is so injury prone. I imagine Murton will hit against many righties, especially when he's hitting well, because Lou has a well documented penchant for sticking with the hot bat.

you're right.

by sue369 on Apr 9, 2007 12:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Personally...
I'd be happiest if floyd could stay healthy and take the majority of the ABs out of LF. There is a high probability that he will outproduce murton this year if he can stay off the dl.
Baby, you got a stew goin'

by Thelonious on Apr 9, 2007 12:19 PM CDT up reply actions

re: Personally...
The "emotional fan" in me wants to stick up for Orange Guy here, because I really do like him as a player. But I'm beginning to see the light in just what a healthy Floyd could bring to this lineup. He's another left-handed bat (which the Cubs need) and another power hitter (which certainly doesn't hurt).

Also, this way Murton can serve as a right-handed pinch hitter, which the Cubs desperately need as well. Sure, THE RIOT might fill this role, but if he's not available, Cedeno seems to be the team's only right-handed option of the bench.

I didn't have the ball, bitch!

by daver on Apr 9, 2007 12:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree...
Especially early in the season.  But the only purpose would be to keep Floyd fresh (and lessen risk of injury) while not completely stunting Murton's growth.

If you ignore the health risk, I'd play Floyd against every RHP and Murton against every LHP.  Floyd will destroy RHP in a way that Murton just can't do, and Murton will perform much better against LHP than Floyd.  But with Floyd not being 100% and always at risk of injury, playing Murton some of the time against RHP does make sense.

They just have

Not psyched...
about Jones batting second, but against RHP we probably aren't going to have a great option in the #2 spot.  Floyd will be playing instead of Murton, and DeRosa doesn't generally hit RHP as well.

I do like the fact that we have a very imposing 3-5 part of the order today.

As for Floyd playing,
I like it.  He has been hitting the ball harder then anyone on the team.  Also, of course we can speculate, but ultimately it doesn't matter what we think, I trust Lou with every decision he makes, regardless of outcome.  Murton will get his 300-450 AB's before the season is over.

If I could be anywhere else in the world right now (it's mid-80's in Buenos Aires) it would be Wrigleyville, I don't care if it's -20, I'm sitting next to Bartman and Dusty has replaced Lou.  Scratch that last one...

Glad we don't have to face Loretta today, one of the most under-rated players in the game I think.  Course that's just my opinion.  And even though it's a glorious day here, come game-time i'll be shacked up in an internet cafe yelling at a screen and watching baseball, a sport they probably mistake for cricket here...

The Indians were snowed out again today, and the Angels/Indians series that was to start tomorrow has been moved to MIlwaukee.

So if anyone wants to see the Indians or the Angels and is willing to drive to Milwaukee, good seats are still available.

An observation
I'm just listening to the radio, so I may be missing something, but it seems most of Lilly's fly ball outs are balls driven deep into the outfield. On a warm afternoon with some help from the wind, the Cubs could be doing a helluva lot worse.

hoey has been consistent. He's not calling the ball below the knees, which is what has been angering the pitchers. The K Howry wanted was off the inside corner.

Brenly
On the Howry pitch that people are frustrated with, Brenly said it was borderline. There were several borderline pitches, and IMO, today the low ones and ones on the inside corner were not called. Players for both teams were frustrated. Usually thats a sign that the same pitchers are being called balls.

DmL

by dmlichte on Apr 9, 2007 5:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Most of Ramirez's called strikes..
..were below the knees and off the plate.  Howry wasn't getting the same calls that Williams got.  There were a couple questionable calls that went against the Astros as well.  His strike zone moved around the entire game.  The only thing consistent about his strike zone is that it was inconsistent the entire game.

but the Cubs barely caught ANY breaks today. Lilly was up in the strike zone early, but by the time he corrected his problems, he was already behind 2-0. Even some hustle to tie the game didn't help -- as it sure seemed that EVERY hard hit ball by a Cub found an outfielder.  Only Barrett's double found some real estate.

However, the set-up patrol have got to get their act together, pronto.

Now the question is -- will the next 2 games even be played? The forecasts look horrible thru Wednesday.

Howry
Obviously it's still early in the season, but he has done nothing to earn my trust. For the second time this year he has come in and given up a pair of runs.

For something positive though... the Cubs were down early and fought back. That was nice to see. Here's hoping tommorrow goes better.

Opening day history
Not to say this really means anything, but...

The last time the Cubs lost a home opener and went on to the postseason was in 1938.

They won their home openers in all successive years in which they went to the playoffs:

1945, 1984, 1989, 1998, 2003.

Hopefully they can break that tradition this year.

7 GP; 3-4 should be 4-3
I don't like some early trends, not capitalizing on quality starts, inconsistent hitting, bullpen not shutting down opponents.

We've had 7 games and 5 quality start (6 IP 3 or fewer runs, right?) and have only won 3...today coulda hung in there but mainly the last game in Cincy was one that "got away.'' Can't let too many of those slip if gonna be winners.

Pinella wanted to get off to fast start. Until the last 2 days we were OK there, on track, now a little behind, but one or two games makes a big diff. at this point.

We could really use Wood/Prior the way things have gone 1st week wtih pen and fifth starter!!
