Around SBN: Holy War Week Brings out the Worst in Fans

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Pirates, Tuesday 5/1, 6:05 CT

April's over. Let's look at some of the good and bad for the month:

Good: Cub starting pitchers had 15 quality starts (out of 24) in April; in those they had a 1.77 ERA in 101.2 IP.

Bad: Cub relief pitchers are 0-7 with three blown saves.

Good: Derrek Lee has 14 doubles, more than any Cub in the last 50 years has had in April, and currently leads the majors in BA at .392.

Bad: The entire Cubs outfield has two home runs -- one from Cliff Floyd, one from Felix Pie, and the $136 million man, who has 5 straight years of 90+ RBI, drove in one run during April.

Good: The guy who many of you thought was going to be the worst of the starters is 3-1 with a 2.35 ERA.

Bad: The supposed ace of the staff has a 5.77 ERA and is tied for the NL lead... in most batters walked.

Good: The Cubs have outscored their opponents 112-91, which, by the Pythagorean Formula created by Bill James, should result in a record of 14-10 after 24 games.

Bad: The Cubs have lost all six of their one-run games, making the above formula pretty much useless.

You get the idea. Time to change this, starting tonight.

2-2 W-L 0-2
2.18 ERA 11.57
33 SO 6

vs. Pit -- vs. Cubs
I hate matchups like this because they look "on paper" to be a no-brainer in favor of the Cubs. Normally what happens is that pitchers whose numbers look this bad come out and shut the Cubs out on three hits.

Wait, it gets worse. Not only has Armas had two brutally bad starts, but several Cubs have hit him really hard during his career (Derrek Lee: .345/.441/.897 in 29 AB, 4 HR; Cliff Floyd, .423/.500/.500 in 26 AB; Aramis Ramirez, .462/.462/.923, 6-for-13, 2 HR; and -- you're not going to believe this -- Cesar Izturis, .583/.538/1.250, 7-for-12, three doubles, a triple, and a HR).

Like I said, I hate matchups like this. Time for one of them to actually come out like the stats say it should.

The game's back on CSN and thus, EI, and also at the Mediacenter.

Well
April was a sobering month.  By "formulaic" account, the Cubs should have been more like 14-10 in the month.  But they weren't.  What happens when the starting pitching isn't so strong?  What happens when a key injury or two inevitably creeps into the equation?  What happens during the dog days of summer?

I know, I know, I know...  People will come back and say, "yeh, but...Soriano hasn't hit, Zambrano hasn't pitched, Milwaukee has just been lucky, Pittsburgh has just been lucky, the weather has been too cold and inclement, the dog ate my homework, blah blah blah diddy da."

Mark Prior sleeps with the fish.

my guess is that
similar fates will bedevil the competition, too. Is Milwaukee going to play at this pace all year?

Alfonso Soriano has been awful
I cannot believe how crappy Soriano looked the first month.  Swinging at every pitch, getting picked off at first base, no power, no great baserunning threat, no fu&%in nothing.

The $136 million man has ONE run batted in on the season.  ONE !!!  This projects out to a RBI total of SIX on the season to go along with 0 homeruns !!!  Jose Macias could post better numbers.  Jason Dubois could post better numbers.  My 68 year old mother could post better numbers.  And just think...he is under contract for 7 years, 5 months of the season more !!!

Mark Prior sleeps with the fish.

history..
shows that this won't last.  that being said..

he still doesn't look close to 100% since the hamstring.  If your leadoff hitter can't run, why have him lead off??  THe situation lends itself as a perfect excuse for Pinella to slot him in the 5 hole and tell him to take it easy on the basepaths.  If your leadoff hitter cant score from 1st on a ball in the gap.. something is amiss.

also, it seems every time i see soriano at the plate I blink and he's 0-2.  He's getting first pitch breaking balls EVERY TIME.  he's gotta start adjusting

by seanlovescubs on May 1, 2007 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Breaking balls
The Soriano I've seen can't hit a breaking ball.  Hence I strongly suspect why he wants to remain a leadoff hitter.  Guys at the top see more fastballs.

Great Idea Alfo
Kill the team at the top of the order so you can hit 5 more homers this season.

Wonderful.

Can we trade this guy, yet?

by MrDurden on May 1, 2007 5:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Murton has struggled but you're stuck with him
Yeah 5 Out Fielders isn't great

But look at it this way.

DeRosa can play 1B, 2B, or 3B.
The Riot can play 2B, 3B or SS
Izzy can Play 2B or SS
Jelly Donut can play 1B.
Alfo can play 2B in a pinch.

So that should be enough movable parts to cover the infield.

Then look at our bats:

So if we have what I think we will have for an everyday line up until the end of June:

LF Alfo
SS The Riot
1B DLee
3B AmRam
RF Floyd
C  Barrett
CF Jones
2B DeRosa

That leaves:
Jelly Donut: Lefty Power Hitter
Murton: Righty Power Hitter
Izzy: Back up infielder
Pie: Pinch Runner/Defensive outfielder
Mr. White: 2.5 million of wasted money

So if you take out Murton you have Ronny who would be another back up infielder and your Power hitter.

And regardless how you put the team together, Murton is the only righty off the bench that can hit for power.

So we are stuck with Murton like it or not.

how the hell is blanco wasted money... most teams need a backup catcher.

blanco
plays great defense, plays at least once a week, is reliable, and can drive in some rbis from time to time. im not saying hes joe mauer out there, but the cubs have plenty of problems, and giving blanco 2.5 million dollars isnt one of them.

by sackings108 on May 1, 2007 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Who would you rather have?
Mr. White at 2.5 mill for two season or any one else at the league minimum?

by MrDurden on May 1, 2007 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd rather have blanco
He had more RBI's in april than the guy we paid $136 million.

by sackings108 on May 1, 2007 4:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

also
Blanco provides veteran leadership and experience. He's been to the playoffs twice before, as well.

by sackings108 on May 1, 2007 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can see your point
I really can.

I just think Blanco is just a symptom of a larger organizational problems.

Why did the cubs give a multi-year multi-million dollar contact to a 35+ year old right, handed back, up catcher with a career BA of .225?

Answer: Because the Cubs have Zero Catching prospects.

ZERO!

So they were forced to pay 2.7 million for a 38 year old back up catcher.

If they had pulled their heads out of their asses they would have picked up a back up catcher last season for, I don't know, a future Hall of Famer Pitcher during the play off run.

But they Didn't.

They picked up Izzy, which is working out so well for us.

(And the Cubs were offered two protects by the Padres last season for Mad Dog, one of which was a catcher but they went with the Iz-Turd instead.)

So yeah.

I guess with no other options on the table Hendry did what he had to, but he put himself in that situation to begin with.

by MrDurden on May 1, 2007 5:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If you had a catching prospect
why in the hell would you want him sitting on the bench as a back up to Barrett? You want him get at bats and playing time at Iowa until he's ready to take over.

There is nothing wrong with Blanco- the Cubs are in better shape here than a lot of teams.

If it looks like horseshit and smells like horseshit, it's probaby horseshit- Sparky Lyle

by tommy veryzer on May 1, 2007 5:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not talking about an A-Level Propect
I'm talking about a guy like Rick Wrona or Joe Girardi.  No way they will be everyday players but could be used in a pitch if you minimim paid back up catcher goes down.

But Because the Cubs have no Prospects if force Hendry to sign Blanco to a contract that was too high and too long.

Blanco s every bit as good
as either of those. You got to do better than that

by tommy veryzer on May 1, 2007 5:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree
Blanco is every bit as good as those guys...but the cubs didn't sign them to a long term deal that cost the team 5.6 million.  They were also under 30.

by MrDurden on May 1, 2007 5:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

uninformed
is the best word I can use to describe these comments, Durden. 3 posts down I mention both Geovany Soto and Koyie Hill. Both are good catching prospects for the Cubs. Blanco has been good and reliable, and that is why he got the contract, not because the Cubs were dying for him. The thing is, why on earth would you bring up one of those guys as a backup, when they could be getting a good amount of playing time in Iowa.

by sackings108 on May 1, 2007 5:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Koyie Hill...
... is no prospect.

Soto might become a decent backup, that's all.

The Cubs' best catching prospect is Chris Robinson, the guy they got for Neifi. But he is at least two years away, maybe three.

Soriano vs Blanco
I think this is more an indication of how poor Soriano is playing than how valuable Blanco is.

by BringBackRyno on May 1, 2007 5:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree
with that completely, but all I;m saying is that although the Cubs have their issues, Henry Blanco and his contract isn't one of them. Also, how can you say the cubs have zero catching prospects, Durden. Geovany Soto was hitting very will in spring, and Koyie Hill wasn't bad either. In fact, right now in AAA Soto has a .340 Avg, and a .392 OBP. Hill is hitting pretty well, also. Besides that, why do the Cubs need any more catchers right now. Barrett has been great.

by sackings108 on May 1, 2007 5:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

WTF????
Why do the Cubs need any more catchers right now?

I'm not going to answer that question rather I will ask you some questions.

When Does Barrett's Contract run out?

How many other quality catchers might hit the open Market next season?

How many of these catcher are going to be under 35?

How many teams are in search of a quality catcher?

How stupid would it be for Barrett not to test the free agent waters?

by MrDurden on May 1, 2007 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

so you claim
that if we had a joe girardi like backup, all those problems would go away? That's idiotic. Also, you still didn't respond to my other post, where I mentioned the cubs catching prospects, who you claimed didn't exist.

I just asked questions.

by MrDurden on May 1, 2007 5:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

by MrDurden on May 1, 2007 5:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

But I thought
that the cubs had "ZERO" catching prospects, remember?? And why in hell would you want a guy who needs everyday starts as your backup catcher. Thats only going to hurt his development, not help it.

What
in hell are you basing that on?

by sackings108 on May 1, 2007 5:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's not that good.
Look at his career stats in the minors.

In the Pro's he will hit exactly like Mr. White.

I'm sure he's a nice guy but if he wasn't a catcher he would have been run out of base ball years ago.

by MrDurden on May 1, 2007 5:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You mean like
last year, when hit hit .270 with a .353 OBP? Nobody's saying those are amazing numbers, but how on earth would that make a player be deserving of getting "run" out of baseball. And even if you don't like Soto, how about Jake Fox, who continues to tear the cover off of the ball?

by sackings108 on May 1, 2007 5:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Where is Mr. Fox playing?
Soto is a C- prospect.

I personally think he would have been better in the bigs backing up Barrett then paying Blanco 5.6 to waste the future of the Cubs.

But Hendry had to sign Blanco, because Soto was not read and the cub have no future at catcher for the next 4 years.  They were forced to get a stop gap in hopes that Soto might be ready and could catch for their AAA team.

I would have rather he took a chance with Soto and save the money, but I can understand his decisions.  But is was a false choice.

They could have gotten an B+ catching prospect and Ryan Kleso (A left handed power bat for less than what we paid for Floyd) for Maddox.  Then the would have had two AAA talents to chose from...one to back up the other to develop in AAA.

But nope.  Hendry was convinced that Izzy would be an All-star one day.  And his error has cost the Cubs money and Future prospect development.

by MrDurden on May 1, 2007 6:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm in the minority but...
I'd rather have Blanco. He was under-utilized in Atlanta, being overshadowed by Javy Lopez for a long time and really only getting starts when Maddux started since Blanco was Greg's personal catcher. I also think he did a formidable job at first base late last season when he was called upon.

by No Southern Belle on May 1, 2007 5:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well I Respectfully Disagree.
I would rather give a kid under 30 a chance to show us what he could do than waste 5.6 million on a catcher that has no future.

That's just me.

by MrDurden on May 1, 2007 5:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I thought
you said the cubs didn't have any catching prospects under 30?

by sackings108 on May 1, 2007 5:37 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Completely agree...
Ward (to be released) or Cedeno (AAA) are the ones who should go.

To be honest, there's nothing altogether wrong with having 5 OF.  It's a choice between 2 backup OF or 2 backup middle-IF, or an extra useless/redundant player (Ward).  The only problem with the 5 OF is finding PT for everyone if they're all "starters."

So basically Piniella will have the following platoons:  Pie in CF mostly, with Jones getting some PT in CF.  Soriano in LF almost exclusively, but the occasional LF appearance for Floyd/Murton.  And Jones/Floyd/Murton rotating in some manner in RF.

That way, you have our best offensive player (Soriano) and our best defensive player (Pie) in regularly.  Jones can snag some time in CF, and Murton/Floyd can get occasional time in LF.  It's not ideal, and Murton gets squeezed a lot.  But we have to have a RH bat on the bench, and Murton is the only one we have right now.

by SouthernCub on May 1, 2007 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well said!
It sucks for Murton, but with no Righty bats with any hope of getting an extra base hit Murton is religated to the bench.

Lou is not doing this because he dislikes Matt rather Hendry spent more time braiding his nipple hairs rather than looking at the long term future and details of this team.

When his ass get fired everyone is welcome to come over to my house for the party.

Pythagorean Record
I think things will be ok for the Cubs. Milwaukee's pythag record should've been 13-12, and that would've put the Cubs in first. I think this will even out over time, and eventually all this Milwaukee hype will die down, and the Cubs will take over the division.

Meanwhile, CBS Sportsline has the Cubs power ranked like 4th from the bottom, with PIT, HOU, STL, and CIN all higher up, not to mention the brewers, who they have at number 5, which I think is ridiculous. Either way, how could they possibly rank the cardinals over us right now, after this weekend. It makes no sense.

by sackings108 on May 1, 2007 4:44 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I just looked at the 2006 Cubs pythagorean record
By month.  In April, they were lucky (going 13-10 when they "should have" gone 11-12), but sure enough, things evened out and they were only a couple games off the projection.  I think things will even out a bit for this squad as well.

by SuperContext on May 1, 2007 5:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

27 games in May
The Cubs will have to exceed their projected pythagorean record from April with 16 wins just to get to 0.500 by the end of the month with a 26-25 real record.  Anything less and they end May where they are today.

This means they have to be competitive (win 1 run games) against teams like the Mets, White Sox and Dodgers, which aren't the NL Central dogs they've played so far.

Prediction:
The Cubs take an early 6 run lead after Izzy hits a double down the line.

Frustrated the Pirates are forced to go to the pen in the fourth.

Lilly makes it to through the 7th when Eyre and Howry combine to give up 4 runs.  Cott is brought in and gives up a three run homer in the bottom of the 8th which give the pirates the lead.

In the Top of the ninth both Alfo and Murton will strike out or ground out with the winning run on base and the Cubs will drive their one-run-games record to 0-7.

I remember seeing pictures of those in the off-season and thinking they were pretty bad, but now that I'm seeing them in action I'm going to change my mind and say that they are HORRIBLE.  I wonder what the players think about them.

Just a very poorly played inning.
Lilly takes a bad route to first, then slips trying to field a bunt, walk with the bases loaded, then they can't turn the double play. No runs should have scored.

by CubsBall2202 on May 1, 2007 6:34 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Enjoy:
Murton has struggled but you're stuck with him

Yeah 5 Out Fielders isn't great

But look at it this way.

DeRosa can play 1B, 2B, or 3B.
The Riot can play 2B, 3B or SS
Izzy can Play 2B or SS
Jelly Donut can play 1B.
Alfo can play 2B in a pinch.

So that should be enough movable parts to cover the infield.

Then look at our bats:

So if we have what I think we will have for an everyday line up until the end of June:

LF Alfo
SS The Riot
1B DLee
3B AmRam
RF Floyd
C  Barrett
CF Jones
2B DeRosa

That leaves:
Jelly Donut: Lefty Power Hitter
Murton: Righty Power Hitter
Izzy: Back up infielder
Pie: Pinch Runner/Defensive outfielder
Mr. White: 2.5 million of wasted money

So if you take out Murton you have Ronny who would be another back up infielder and your Power hitter.

And regardless how you put the team together, Murton is the only righty off the bench that can hit for power.

So we are stuck with Murton like it or not.

That was a really weak inning at the plate.

Right now I feel like the game has hinged on one pitch-- the 1-1 pitch high and out of the zone that Ramirez swung at.  That puts the count at 1-2 instead of 2-1.  If Ramirez takes that pitch, I doubt he grounds into the DP on the next one.

Until Lou plays Theriot at SS leading off, Murton in RF batting second and Soriano batting 5th for at least two weeks in a row then he is no better than Dusty. No way Floyd should be batting 2nd, lefthander or not, and no way Izturis should be at short to start a game. Sometimes I just don't understand why these people make the money they do. Because
the Pirates didn't get to bat in the bottom of the seventh.

Therefore, the score reverted to the last completed inning.

The Pirates were winning at the beginning of the sixth.

HOWEVER, I believe they changed that rule a couple of years ago.  I THINK it's a suspended game now, but I don't know.

I do know that if the game ends right now, the Cubs do NOT win, because the Pirates did not get to bat in the bottom of the seventh.

by Josh77 on May 1, 2007 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That...
would be wonderful news.  I hope this is correct.

by SouthernCub on May 1, 2007 8:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Here's what I can find...
If a game is rained out before play begins, it is rescheduled for a later date. If a game is called after play begins but before 4 1/2 innings have been completed (if the home team is ahead) or five innings have been completed (if the visitors are ahead or the game is tied), the game is not an official game. The umpire declares "No Game", the game is played in its entirety at a later date, and statistics compiled during the game are not counted. Games that are stopped after they become official games count in the standings (unless the game is tied, in which case it is replayed from the beginning), and statistics compiled during the game are counted.
(from Wiki... ok, I know, lame. Thanks.)

So I guess we could start over?

They need to get nine outs. They always make it seem like forever. Now they wont get them until tomorrow. It can never be easy.

Go Cards!
just doesn't even sound right.  But after the weekend they had they could use the win and the division leader would lose a game to the field.

Was about to write off the entire season
If the Cubs had lost this game was seeing all sorts of bad signs...but hope lives another day!!

About time...meantime, overachieving brewers take lead on StL 4-2 they've got to cool off soon look at their lineup some nice players (Hardy, Weeks, Fielder, etc.) but no superstars to compare to Cubs big 3, Pujols, Griffey, etc.

Interesting Thought
Soriano- First Home Run

JJ - First Home Run

Biggest comeback, that I can remember.

Lily pitches like shit, thats a new one.

Uncle Cliffy,tatoos one.

All of these emphasize that April is gone and May is a new month. The Cub month.

Although the Brewers still look to be the same.

No Hit Bid....
When is the last time a team was no-hit two times in  one season? Texas was no hit by Buerhle earlier this year. That is very surprising due to the solid contact hitters they have(Teixera, Young, Kinsler). Oh well, Hughes is solid but he will blow it.

Who watched
the Top 50 Baseball plays???  Whats your favorite one???
Id have to say my favorites are the Jim Edmonds catch, the Jeter cutoff play, D-Backs win WS, and Ozzie Smith barehander.  I also liked the barehanded play by some leftfielder, dont know who it was...  God, there are some amazing plays...
Some of my favorites that arent on the list?  Juan Pierre robs Bonds of 700, and Jeter busting his face into the seats as he made that unbelievable catch a couple years ago...

It's in Seattle, so that's why it's still light out if that confused you.

Any word on the game? I would think it'll probably have to wait until tomorrow.

fair at bats, new rules, etc. thank the gods too, because i think we would have lost under the old rules, and the 4 runs would have been wiped.

Because
the Pirates had not batted in the inning.

by JFCubFan on May 1, 2007 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Can't end the game...
with the road team leading after taking the lead in the top half of the inning.  The home team has to have a fair chance to match them in the bottom half of the inning.

If it had been 5-2 Pirates after 6.5 innings, the game would have been called official, because the Pirates wouldn't have needed the bottom half of the 7th.

Similarly, if we had led 6-5 after 6 innings and completed the top half of the 7th without scoring (or even if we had scored), the game would be over.  But because we trailed through 6 and took the lead in the 7th, the Pirates must be allowed the chance to match us in the bottom half.
