Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

One Down, Two To Go

Mike said to me, late in today's exciting, come-from-behind, 6-3 Cub win over the White Sox, that often, in the eleven (!) seasons of interleague play, this series has sent one or the other of the teams on the road to something better, from the 1998 Cubs to the 2000 White Sox and beyond.

If that's the case, we might look back on this game and say, "That was the one that sent the 2007 Cubs on their way."

Yeah, I know. Drinking that damn Kool-Aid again. But you know me.

Yesterday, many of you were ready to jump off the ledge and blow up this team. But Dave said to me that one of the problems with the Cubs is that they're operating in panic mode, changing here, changing there, reacting to every little misstep with a roster move. There was another one today, though this one makes some sense -- Carlos Marmol was recalled from Iowa and Mike Fontenot returned there.

The bullpen didn't need the help today, as both Bob Howry and Ryan Dempster were lights-out, throwing 1-2-3 innings and striking out two batters each, Dempster getting pinch-hitter Ryan Sweeney with a flourish, a called third strike to end the game.

That's what a manager has to do -- not knee-jerk get rid of a closer after he has one bad game (and Dempster has, for the most part, been pretty good this year), but send him right back out there in a save situation. And Dempster paid his manager back for his confidence.

Meanwhile, many of the Sox fans in attendance were railing against Ozzie Guillen, who (reportedly; I didn't hear this myself) was railing on the air this morning on the Mike North show about North's criticism of his (Guillen's) lineup selection: "Who are YOU to criticize ME," Guillen allegedly said.

Pardon me for stifling a snicker. I don't really like sports talk radio, but that happens to be Mike North's job -- talking about and critiquing sports. Ozzie's job is winning ballgames, and today, Ozzie just about singlehandedly cost the Sox the game by leaving Mark Buehrle in at least one batter too long in the Cubs' three-run seventh.

This, of course, was fine with all of us Cubs fans -- the seventh started with "an innocent little walk" (Oh, THANK YOU, Dusty Baker, for that immortal phrase!) after two were out and no one was on base, to pinch-hitter Henry Blanco (who, with Derrek Lee still unavailable, was the only right-handed bat on the bench today). We were all stunned when Buehrle was left in to pitch to Ryan Theriot, with Mike MacDougal warmed up and ready in the Sox bullpen. Theriot singled, and then MacDougal came in.

There was a reason MacDougal came into the game with a 5.40 ERA. He's bad. He gave up a bases-clearing triple to Angel Pagan, who has played extremely well since his recall (and Piniella, in his postgame press conference, said he might have to consider putting Pagan out there every day, and at least while Pagan is hot, that's not a terrible idea. Incidentally, Lou also said that Derrek Lee will probably NOT play tomorrow.), and then wild-pitched Pagan home, and then gave up two more hits in the seventh and two in the eighth before Guillen yanked him out of there in favor of Boone Logan, who allowed two run-scoring fielder's choices... after the fourth Sox error of the game, a dropped throw by 3B Pablo Ozuna (who was only playing because Joe Crede got hit in the face during BP), made Matt Murton safe at third base.

A game like this was badly needed after yesterday's debacle, and it's especially sweet given the manner in which it was won, the Cubs trailing 3-1 going into the last of the seventh. Ted Lilly threw a very nice game; allowing six hits and three runs in seven innings is going to get you wins most of the time, and the Cubs' three-run rally did, in fact, give Lilly, the pitcher of record, the victory, his fourth of the season.

The Sox fans in attendance, perhaps 25-30% of the total crowd of 40,874, were loud at first, cheering especially when Jermaine Dye's home run made it 2-1 in the third inning. But they got progressively quieter as time went by, and though I did see a lot of Sox jerseys (the Konerko model seems the most popular), including quite a few Sox/Cubs couples (what's up with that?), the Cub fans were much louder in the seventh and eighth innings. Incidentally, it was reported on a White Sox board (and I apologize, I cannot find the link now) this morning that the capacity of Wrigley Field is 38,376. That is incorrect -- and in fact, I'm not sure when that figure was ever correct. With the bleacher expansion and other additions in recent years (the dugout and bullpen boxes), the official seating capacity of Wrigley Field is 41,118, and occasionally you will see attendance figures above that (41,388 on Opening Day this year, for example), with standing room tickets sold. I would, in fact, expect tomorrow's crowd to be the largest of the season to date (and maybe the largest of the year, period), with the gorgeous weather forecast.

A good start in the intercity battle has been a good sign, in many past years. May it again be so.

Call me crazy...
but I'd take the Red Sox roster over ours.  Better starting pitching, better bullpen, better lineup.

We have a lot of talent on the roster, but we're far from "pound for pound as good or better than anyone in the majors."

Well geez.
The Red Sox only have the best record in baseball. I guess their roster must be pretty good.

Red Sox
The Red Sox, not only have a great roster, they have a great owner (John Henry), a great GM (Theo Epstein) and a great manager (Terry Francona, who by the way, played 86 games for the Cubbies- http://www.baseball-reference.com/f/francte01.shtml).  Above all, they play like a well-oiled TEAM.  It helps that many of the current roster members were with the 2004 championship club as well.

Piniella has got to get the magic glue to hold everything together before we can even compare to the Red Sox.  Let's hope that happens before the All-Star break.

I was just pointing out how silly the first guy's post was.  And it isn't just the Red Sox who have a better roster.  I was just pointing out the most obvious example.

yeah ok
as of right now our starters as a whole are near the top of every leaderboard. we have at least 3 superstar players, good speed and descent defense. no blame on mgmnt this year. we have a damn good lineup and a damn good starting rotation. hell the yankees have bought nearly every top FA for years. how well our they doing this year? as far as boston beckett just landed on the dl. they will come back down to earth. i cant wait until the cold nights in late october when my cubbies are playing in the series and you doubters are choking on your own words.

WHAT?!?
Back down to earth?

Dude they have the best starting Rotation in Baseball right now...even with Beckett and Lester on the DL and Paplebon(?) in the Pen.

They have great role players and the best Left/Right handed 1-2 bunch in Baseball in the last 30 years.

Today, the Red Sox are the best team in baseball.

As for the Cubs making the Play-offs.

In the immortal words of Jim Mora: "What's that? Playoffs? Don't talk about-- playoffs? You kidding me? Playoffs? I just hope we can win a game!"

Excuse me
They don't hand out championships to teams who spend money in the offseason for talent.  That can help a team win, but it is only a piece of the puzzle.  Furthermore, championships are never won on paper, and while this Cub team has a good deal of talented players, time will tell whether they have the right mix of talent, to make a playoff run.

pound for pound
I don't know if, pound for pound, we're as good as any team in the division.

We have some talent, but our bullpen is a wreck and we have a lot of pieces that don't fit.

Do we have some upside? Sure, and it's a long season. But these kind of statements after one win ... wow.

by elgato on May 18, 2007 5:53 PM CDT up reply actions

We have a lot of talent.
We don't yet have a lot of good players. The team still plays like their fans: emotional rather than logical. They need to leave the emotional BS to the fans and just get on with their job. The only player I've seen this year that is immune to pressure is Theriot. Derek Lee is ok in some pressure scenarios. Daryl Ward seems to be a guy that isn't fazed easily. But there are people like Michael Barrett that are simply not playing up to their potential. And then there are people like JJ who carry the Dusty vibe and expect failure. Brains are optional with his game.
Len Kasper rocks.

Changes to alignment...
From cubs.com, the quote was "We're going to make some changes here with our alignment.  We'll have some interesting things for you on Monday or Tuesday."

That makes me wonder if it's an adjustment of the rotation and not so much major changes in the actual staff.  Outside of Marmol and Marshall, I have trouble seeing anyone else who could be brought up.

Perhaps moving Guzman to the bullpen again?

Throw them right back on the mound
I have a different take on putting guys back on the mound after they've been pounded. It seems to me (and I have no real stats to back this up) that usually a pitcher who has been knocked around by a team gets knocked around again if he's brought in to pitch in the same series. Since Howry and Dempster didn't pitch against the WS Thursday, it was OK to use them again.

Secondly, I can't fault Guillen for allowing Buehrle to face Theriot. He had shut him out previously. As it was, Theriot's hit wasn't scalded.

Players win awards but teams win championships.

Other than shuffling guys around in the pen or 5th starter spot there isn't much else they can do.  In the grand scheme it won't make too much difference, all the haters will just start ripping the new guys.  Maybe they're going to pull a Brett Myers and make Z the new closer?

I got to watch the Cubs feed during the 7th inning and just watched the White Sox feed on CSN.  Bob made a great point about Hall.  He said you could see the wild pitch/ passed ball coming.  It was Hall's first game as a catcher this season with your wildest pitcher on the mound.  No mention about that by the White Sox annoucers.  Ozzie should have taken out Hall with Buerhle.

Before the season started I said that Lilly would lead this team in victories and be a Cy Young finalist.  I may have been a little too ambitious in those predictions, but Lilly is in my opinion proving to be the most reliable pitcher on this staff.  It is a pleasure to watch him work out there on the mound.  A real treat to see both Mark Buerhle and he in the same game.

Crosstown turnaround...
Seems to me that there has been way too much talk in the past about a series win or simply a win of a game turning one of the teams around.

For example, last season I remember when the Cubbies narrowly avoided a sweep at The Cell there was plenty of talk of how that "big win" was going to turn the Cubbies around.  You know how much that Sunday win against the Sox turned the Cubs around.

Yesterdays game was a pretty good summation of the Sox season so long.  If the Sox win the next two will it mean to me that they've now begun fully engaged?  I guess I'd hope that to be so, but I won't know for weeks from now.

by DrCrawdad on May 19, 2007 6:32 AM CDT reply actions

Last year, it didn't do that.
But the series at Wrigley Field sure sent the Cubs deeper into their tailspin.

This hasn't happened EVERY year, but it HAS happened in many years when either team has gone on to the postseason.

OVERRATED....
Al, I know you WANT this to be a turn around for the Cubs but I don't see how the actual records support your statement here...

"This hasn't happened EVERY year, but it HAS happened in many years when either team has gone on to the postseason."

Post-season appearances since I.L.:

Sox
'00 split
'05 split

Cubs
'03 Sox 4 of 6
'98 Cubs sweep

According to the above, if you want your team to be propelled to the playoffs and beyond then go for a split.  Heck the '03 Cubs lost both series and still came very close to the World Series.

The Crosstown series propelling a team onward has no basis in the history, so far and IMO it's OVERRATED.

More or less...
Some Cubbie fans that I know (Les Grobstein for one) have always told me that the Sox sweep of the Cubs in '99 had absolutely nothing to do with the Cubs downhill slide afterward.

In fact I distinctly remember Sosa interviewed in his locker saying how the the sweep meant so much more for the Sox and Sox fans than it did for the Cubs and Cub fans.

JONES IN CF!!!
No Pagan - UGH!

So much for the "Lou goes with the Hot HAnd"

I Predict 2 K's for JJ. 0-4

I hope I will eat Crow -

But I've pretty much pegged these guys so far...

Is it too early to be out of it, or too early to be this far behind?
