Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Open Thread: Cubs vs. White Sox, Saturday 5/19, 2:55 CT

Here we go again, on the Fox Sports Merry-Go-Round. First of all, I'm not convinced that "2:55" starting time is for real. Last Saturday, the first pitch in Philadelphia, another Fox game, occurred closer to 2:45. So tune in early.

If you are in a city where you can watch today's game, you will be "treated" to the announcing team of Kenny Albert and Joe Girardi. No further comment necessary.

Finally, I have helpfully eliminated for you all the markets in the above link that will NOT be carrying the Cub game -- that's 76% of the country. Markets carrying the Cub game (23%, according to that link; no explanation as to what happens to the missing 1%) are, in alphabetical order:

Bowling Green KY, Cedar Rapids IA, Champaign IL, Chicago IL, Cincinnati OH, Cleveland OH, Columbia MO, Columbus OH, Davenport IA, Dayton OH, Des Moines IA, Duluth MN, Evansville IN, Fargo ND, Fort Wayne IN, Grand Rapids MI, Green Bay WI, Indianapolis IN, Joplin MO, Kansas City MO, La Crosse WI, Lansing MI, Lexington KY, Lima OH, Lincoln NE, Louisville KY, Madison WI, Meridian MS, Milwaukee WI, Minneapolis MN, Minot ND, Mobile AL, Monroe LA, New Orleans LA, North Platte NE, Omaha NE, Ottumwa IA, Paducah KY, Peoria IL, Quincy IL, Rapid City SD, Rochester MN, Rockford IL, Sioux City IA, Sioux Falls SD, South Bend IN, Springfield IL, Springfield MO, St. Louis MO, Terre Haute IN, Topeka KS, Traverse City MI, Tucson AZ, Wausau WI, Wichita KS
That's it. If you are not in those TV market areas, you're out of luck. (The one that really puzzles me is: Tucson, but not Phoenix?)

The potential good news for you, though, is this New York-area weather forecast:

Today: Showers likely, mainly after 3pm. Increasing clouds, with a high near 62. North wind between 11 and 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
Any extended rain delay or rainout for the Yankees/Mets game, and the entire country would get the Cub game. The Chicago-area forecast is terrific:
Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 79. Breezy, with a southwest wind between 15 and 20 mph.
 Today's Starting Pitchers
Jason Marquis
 J. Marquis
Cubs
vs. Javier Vazquez
 J. Vazquez
White Sox
5-1 W-L 2-2
2.22 ERA 3.86
25 SO 36
16 BB 14
3 HR 4
vs. Sox -- vs. Cubs
Please completely ignore the following statistic: Jason Marquis is 0-1 in two career starts vs. the White Sox with an 11.45 ERA. That, obviously, is skewed by this horrendous game last year in which Tony LaRussa left him in to take a 13-run pounding. This is a new year and a new Marquis.

Right?

Vazquez has made 12 career starts against the Cubs, going 3-3 with a 5.04 ERA. Last July 1, the Cubs hit him pretty good -- 11 hits and 5 runs in 6 IP -- only to lose that game on that 2-strike, 2-out 9th inning HR by you-know-who off Ryan Dempster.

But this is a new year and a new Dempster.

Right?

Finally, we are apparently supposed to hold our breaths until Monday, when Lou Piniella has a surprise for us. Could it be something like this?

The last two times in his managerial career Piniella had bullpens as unpredictable as this one and blowing early-season games at the rate his 2007 Cubs are, he started talking about using his relievers in the first few innings of games and having the scheduled starters come in to finish the final six or seven.
He never actually did that -- but who knows?

Here's today's Mediacenter, although I don't think that'll help any of you see the Cub game.

Dempster
I know there are mixed feelings about him, but I'm a lot more comfortable with Dempster than the rest of the crap we have in the pen these days -- even after the Mets game.

Any guesses on what happens next week? I think Marshall will be brought up and Guzman goes to the pen. Unless Dempster does something stupid this weekend, I think he keeps the closer job.

Beyond that ...

If Marshall is called up
You do you think would be the odd man out off the current staff of twelve? Another shuttle to AAA for Guzman? I would hope not. I think to date he has done an honoralble job. Maybe a vet goes? Could be interesting.

So you start one of the relievers,
follow him up with another dreg from the pen, go down two, three, five runs, THEN bring in a good pitcher?  I'll take my chances the old fashioned way.  It's one of the key ways the Cubs have been blowing games for the four decades I've followed them and to change now would be too tramatic for me.

Last Saturday's Start Time
Silly as it sounds, the start time last Saturday actually was formally moved up 10 minutes.  I got an email a couple of days before the game from the Phillies and was really confused at first.  ("They're sending me an email and a warning to be sure I'm on time for TEN MINUTES?")

I've come in for the game - because Fox darn sure wouldn't show it to me at home.

I will be doing my raindance
It is drizzling now
It should be noted FYI that the Mets are offering a nice good will
gesture for the fiasco of the 3 hour delayed game on Wed. The
are offering anyone with tickets to that game free tickets
( mail in exchange) to any one of the upcoming games in the Twins series. I am imagine you  will get bad seats and in addition to tearing up my $84 worth of tickets and staying home I have no interest in seeing any games at Shea other than the Cubs or a Maddux start. Still nice thing to do

2 1/2 Hour Road Trip -Tulsa to Whichita
If I leave now, I can make to Whichita before the game starts.  This Fox thing really is crap.  Most people in the midwest could care less about the Yankees and Mets.  As greedy as MLB is, you'd think they could make a deal with FOX and set some outragous price that freaks like me would pay to watch this game.  Pathetic!

NO PAGAN!!!
Jones in CF today!

I thought Lou goes with the "Hot Hand"

WTF?

JJ will have 2 to 3 K's today against Vasquez (with the pink bat).

Is it too early to be out of it, or too early to be this far behind?

by TheEman on May 19, 2007 12:20 PM CDT reply actions

Makes sense
As good as Angel has been so far, Lou needs to stick to his guns and use the platoon at least in the outfield.  It's better for the club in the long run to have set line-ups as long as he can.

by martyblue on May 19, 2007 12:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Lineup
How do you know that Jones is playing. Where are you getting the lineup from?

by louslovechild on May 19, 2007 12:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Just heard on ESPN
locally -   Guzman to the `pen.

      5th starter not named yet.

Talked about Sean Marshall or Dempster as 5th man..

Bruce Levine broke the story originally.

Is it too early to be out of it, or too early to be this far behind?

by TheEman on May 19, 2007 1:00 PM CDT reply actions

i may puke if dempster is the 5th man
however i would like guzman as the closer, i guess

guzman as closer
nooooooooooooooo!
I don't care about a world series, just be competitive thru September.

by buckmulligan on May 19, 2007 1:11 PM CDT up reply actions

if he were able to cut down on the walks
it wouldnt be that horrible, especially for only one inning, ill be honest i would trust him more than dempster

by CubsBall2202 on May 19, 2007 1:22 PM CDT up reply actions

why would you trust Guzman more than dempster?
Dempster has blown 1 save this season (the Mets game wasn't a save situation). Is he Trevor Hoffman? No. But c'mon people -- he hasn't been that bad.

That said, if we had a better option in-house, I'd say move Dempster. But there's no evidence to support saying Guzman would be better.

by elgato on May 19, 2007 1:26 PM CDT up reply actions

But if he's really good ...
... after a month or two of setup work (and Dempster regresses), he could develop into a closer. I'm just saying he needs to prove himself before he supplants Dempster.

by elgato on May 19, 2007 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions

most likely Marshall
and I'm rootin for the home town guy!!

he's been really impressive in AAA and should get the call up..

what about Marmol?

by Chanman25 on May 19, 2007 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions

there's just no way ...
Lou goes with Dempster as the fifth starter. They'd have to stretch out Dempster to do that -- like they did with Guzman when they sent him to AAA.

I'm guessing Wuertz gets sent down (or somebody else gets "back spasms"), Guzman goes to setup, Marshall is the fifth starter and Dempster stays as the closer for now.

Besides stretching out Dempster, does Lou think Guzman has proved tough enough to close? I really doubt it.

by elgato on May 19, 2007 1:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Weurtz Sent Down?
Yeah, that might happen.  And if it does its yet more proof that Hendry has been an idiot in assembling the team.  He's got the lowest ERA on the team and has, arguably, been the most effective relief pitcher in the Pen.  But because the rest of the bullpen can't be sent down.....

Once again Hendry's placed the team in a box by signing too many crappy veterans for too much money.

by frustratedfan on May 19, 2007 2:47 PM CDT up reply actions

exactly
I don't think Wuertz deserves to be sent down, but you know Howry, Eyre, Ohman and Cotts are safe.

by elgato on May 19, 2007 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions

platoon in center?
pagan is a switch hitter who had 3 hits yesterday after batting from BOTH sides of the plate, he is hot now and should be in the lineup

by dkowal22 on May 19, 2007 1:16 PM CDT reply actions

agree totally
Not only is Pagan hitting well, he's hitting well in the clutch. And yes, he's only done so in a very small sample size.

Here's hoping JJ's only playing so he can be showcased for a trade. I know the guy is a good person who works hard, but I'm tired of knowing he'll strike out as soon there are two strikes against him.

That said, here's hoping he makes me eat MAJOR crow today.

do some research, Joe
Girardi just said the Giants won with A.J. The Giants did not make the postseason in '04 with A.J. They won 91 games, but fell short.

Ninety-one wins isn't bad, but I wouldn't consider the Cubs' 89 wins that year a success. And, of course, the Giants dropped A.J. like a bad habit.

The last time Girardi called a Cubs game, he said something about Prior not being the same after the collision with Giles.

Uh, Prior went 10-1 after the collision. I'd say the Brad Hawpe line drive and overuse by Dusty did much more to hurt Prior's career.

by elgato on May 19, 2007 3:52 PM CDT reply actions

AJ is answer to trivia question
A apart of one of the most lopsided trades in MLB history; Aj was traded to the Giants for Boof Bonser, Joe Nathan and Nelson Liriano. D'oh.

Then the Giants "dropped him like a bad habit".

by lemon20pie on May 19, 2007 6:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Part right
Girardi was partly right. True, there's no evidence of it, but I think that after the collision with Giles, Prior compensated and pitched in a way that hurt him more later. It's a hunch, but again, I can't prove it. Neither can Girardi, of course.

Is Wuertz coming in?
If he is, he's got to know he could be pitching for his job.

by elgato on May 19, 2007 4:51 PM CDT reply actions

why?
he's pitching a whole lot better than Ohman or the entire bullpen...

by Chanman25 on May 19, 2007 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions

He's one of the few guys in the pen
Who isn't making enough money to be sent down.

Lou's promising a bunch of changes, and it's not like they'll send Howry or Eyre to AAA.

But Wuertz just got a huge DP.

by elgato on May 19, 2007 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions

so...
we're going to get better by sending down our best reliever?

That sounds like a good plan.

Needless to say many a Cubs fan has been guilty of overreacting early this year. The bullpen has blown WAY too many games, we all know this

but Wuertz and Dempster havent been the problem, yet they're getting all the ridicule because they're the most recent to breakdown, its ridiculous

they're our two best relievers

by DartmouthCubsFan on May 19, 2007 4:56 PM CDT up reply actions

wuertz has been ridiculed?
I WASN'T ridiculing him, and I agree with you on Dempster.

But if Guzman is going to the pen, and if Marshall is getting called up, somebody will have to leave.

Who do you think it will be?

by elgato on May 19, 2007 4:58 PM CDT up reply actions

pretty ridiculous
since he has the lowest ERA in the pen.... but hey we're all about overreacting

by DartmouthCubsFan on May 19, 2007 4:53 PM CDT up reply actions

re: ridiculous
I posted earlier that I didn't think Wuertz deserved to be sent down. Check it out.

I'm not overreacting. I'm just making an educated guess. I could be wrong.

by elgato on May 19, 2007 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions

i just think that would be pretty ridiculous
and short sighted of this organization to even consider sending him down, he's been one of the best guys in the league at stranding inherited runners

he's been great

of course the org has seemed to underrate his talents for a few years now

but in general everyone here and all cubs fans in general need to calm down. I'm not on Al's super-optimistic kool-aid (i just think we're a little bit better than .500 team this season), but its getting ridiculous

everyone's panicking and its coming through on the field, everyone's playing scared all the time (check how many times guys havent gone from 3rd on sac flies etc) everyone's afraid of making a mistake because the fans are chomping at the bit to "change things" and the manager's echoing these sentiments, its not helping things

by DartmouthCubsFan on May 19, 2007 5:00 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with most of what you said
A lot of posters need to come off the ledge.

And I don't think Wuertz deserves to be sent down. But the organization is kind of stuck because Hendry has a bunch of terrible, overpaid relievers.

And, odds are, with Guzman going to the pen, they'll have to shed a righty.

My vote would be to dump the tub of lard known as Scott Eyre. But he's got two years left on his deal.

by elgato on May 19, 2007 5:03 PM CDT up reply actions

yes
the organization is stuck but there arent people in the minors that can come in and help. Moving Angel to the bullpen for Marshall i guess could help, but Marshall wasn't pitching as well last season as Angel has out of the #5 slot, so we very well may be just rearranging our strengths there....

the organization is stuck because they've operated out of desperation after the fan bases' reactions the last few years and they've done a poor job at developing their own talent. They've put themselves in this bind and for the most part they have to figure this out with what they currently have because there isnt much help on the way.... I love the potential of Carlos Marmol but he's VERY YOUNG and when he struggles its with control. putting him under the pressure that's currently going on at Wrigley with Lou and the fans could be quite overwhelming

by DartmouthCubsFan on May 19, 2007 5:10 PM CDT up reply actions

I think Marshall's potential as a starter
is as higher as Guzman's, mainly because Angel seems to tire easily. But Guzman definitely has better stuff.

This was a great game
But to bring you back down to earth.

First:  Howry blew another lead.  The only reason we won this game was because the Offense bailed us out.

Second: Marquis looked very weak for the second start in a row. It looks to me like he's coming back down to earth fast.

Third: Murton looks like he needs to head back to AAA. That leaves us with no right handed bat off the bench.

Good outcome today Cubs.  The offense (and DLEE) are looking right.  But our pen (and now the starting pitching) are still weak.

The team's got a lot of issues. But enjoying this win isn't the same as burying your head in the sand.

But I love ya, Durden. You're like the villain twirling his mustache on this site. And it's usually more fun to read because of you. No one wants a boring blog.

Mwahahahaha
For what it is worth this is a big win for this team at many levels.

That makes me happy because I want this team to WIN.

(I also love the fact that A.J. made the last out)

On that one
I'm going to go take a bath and then break out my new bottle of Bailey's. Have a nice evening guys.

Stop Right Here!!
OK, what did I say in my earlier analysis?
This guy would complain if God came back to earth and proclaimed "World Peace." ("Well, wait, I have stock in Haliburton.")

There's kind of a bi-polar thing going on here.

Carry on.

The CSN postgame show is a joke.
White Sox Homer using "we" + White Sox loss - Sox Fans watching = whoops.

Damn Fox
I could not watch it and would only check score every 20 minutes on computer but WHO CARES

Um C'mon Blue Mike tell us how Aardsma has ice water in his
veins again .

Al sorry you won't get credit for the Marquis homer in the fantasy league. Oh well

YIPEE!!!!
( and as a bonus I get to pass by my depressed Yankee fan doorman when I leave the office. I actually am rooting for the Mets this weekend because I want to see the Yankees DESTROYED)

It's hard to root for a team
when the Yanks and Mets play each other so I just root for a Large meteor to hit NY City.

by MrDurden on May 19, 2007 5:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Um thanks a lot
I LIVE HERE you know. I agree I hate both of them so it is
win.win. lose. lose but for the moment the Yankees are a lot more obnoxious I want to see George EXPLODE
Also I want the games most greedy self centered ass hole to find
his team out of it by the time his gets his 18 million dollor body
in a uniform. I mean we all know he went the the Yankees because they were a WINNER

GO CUBS

Only 2 LOB for the Cubs today.
I'll repeat that: 2 (two) LOB.

Just how will Jacque manage to fall asleep tonight?
