Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Dodgers, Friday 5/25, 9:40 CT

Oh, you West Coast people must be laughing your heads off.

Seven-forty? What kind of silly time is that to start a game? OK, I admit -- no sillier than "7:11", but that's not a Cub thing, anyway. Seven-forty? What, is traffic in LA that bad? It'll be even worse for those of you who are watching from the Eastern time zone -- that's ten-forty there. Might as well just have breakfast by the time this one's over.

What this means is that I'll get to see even less of tonight's game than I usually do. Maybe that will result in more runs being scored. Who knows?

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Ted Lilly
 T. Lilly
Cubs
vs. Derek Lowe
 D. Lowe
Dodgers
4-2 W-L 4-5
2.69 ERA 3.84
54 SO 42
10 BB 24
3 HR 2
vs. LA -- vs. Cubs
Ted Lilly has been one of the best pitchers in the National League this season. He is eighth in ERA -- just behind his teammate, Jason Marquis -- and has walked the fewest batters (ten) of any pitcher currently qualified for the ERA lead (one inning pitched per team game). Lilly has faced very few of the current Dodgers; only Nomar Garciaparra has more than five career AB vs. Lilly. Nomar has played only three career games vs. the Cubs, going 4-for-15 (.267) with two doubles.

Derek Lowe is only 1-1 lifetime in four starts vs. the Cubs. But that one win was impressive -- a one-hit shutout at Wrigley Field on August 31, 2005. Derrek Lee ought to salivate seeing him -- lifetime, he is .471/.500/.647 vs. Lowe.

All three games this weekend will be available nationally -- well, sort of, in the case of tomorrow's game, which will be sent to 46% of the USA via Fox. Today's is on WGN and at the Mediacenter.

Yes, Al traffic will be horrid
At the beginning of a holiday weekend -- the rush starts early, and lingers for hours. At least some fans might make the game on time.

I thought LA fans...
... didn't care about that. Plus they leave early, too.

Umm
I care, Al!

And I'm leaving for the game in about an hour.  That gives me 2 hours and 45 minutes to drive 45 miles.

Should be enough time.  Should.

by Josh Timmers on May 25, 2007 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Good luck!
That is insane. For comparison, I live approximately two miles from Wrigley Field. I can get there in less than ten minutes, and assuming I get out quickly, home in about the same amount of time.

Al says,
he can get the two miles from his home to Wrigley Field in ten minutes.  Please tell me you don't drive, Al.  Ride a bike, walk, take the el but please don't tell me you're firing up your car LA style to go 16 lousy blocks.  Say it ain't so, Al.

I'll take Dr. Crawdad's position in his absense
That was clearly a hate-filled, unnecessary attack at another well-respected baseball club's loyal patrons.  Cubs fans are clearly as vile as and might possibly be even worse than any other fan base in professional sports.  Please try to have respect.

There, I'll take my toungue out of my cheek and say, "Go Cubs!"

by Rev Gunia on May 25, 2007 7:21 PM CDT up reply actions

That's overrated, too.
People drive so far to get here -- they just want to be home before midnight. Those usually are the season ticket holders who are there night after night.

The situation became notorious because of the unique camera placement which allows a view into the parking lot -- and the 'taillight' shot.

I can think of no other ballpark that allows for a shot like that from inside the ballpark, and you directors love that beauty shot. It give the pbp team a chance to chuckle.

One night, I'm bashing Padres fans, and now I come to the defense of Dodgers fans.

Friday night traffic ALWAYS sucks
so I am leaving the office now (4 pm) to get there(hopefully) by 6.

Check out LA local traffic here - Dodger Stadium is bounded by the 110 on the south, the 5 on the east, and west by the 101.

Traffic
Yes, Al, I hate to tell you, but traffic IS really that bad.  Without traffic, I can be at Dodger Stadium in 40 minutes from my office.  If I leave today at 5PM, I guarantee you that I will not get into Dodger Stadium before 7:30PM.  Seriously bad out here! And I'm sure you realize that other than a joke of a bus line, there is no mass transit option for people to get to Dodger Stadium.

by TMOX on May 25, 2007 5:32 PM CDT reply actions

I had no idea.
How many miles is Dodger Stadium from your office?

Distance
I work about 40 miles from Dodger Stadium, off Hwy 101.  I can take a shortcut through Echo Park and make it to the game in just under 45 minutes; that is, if no other cars exist in LA.  I left for a game last year at 5:15 and got to my seat at 7:45.  Like I said, there are zero mass transit options to get to the stadium.  God, I miss Chicago!

by santoswoodenlegs on May 25, 2007 6:01 PM CDT up reply actions

I think the Cubs have a real chance to win this
game tonight.

The Cubs seem to hit struggling pitchers early then struggle later in the game.

Lowe has throughout his career needed an inning or two to get that sinker down out of the strike zone.

If the Cubs jump on him early then they will have a great chance to win.  If they don't then I suspect that my quote you used Sue will be correct expect it should have read 5-25-07 not 5-24.

Let's hope for at least 2 out of 3...
A 3-3 West Coast road trip wouldn't be that bad...then let's come home and start a winning streak and get back into this thing. On paper, looks like we have the advantage on the mound in this series. We don't have to face Penny which is nice. Hopefully Zambrano and Hill can figure it out.

by bergs55 on May 25, 2007 6:44 PM CDT reply actions

2 of 3 be great
winning that first one is key anyone know cubs record in first games of series?? around .500 I'm guessing...Lilly has been super.

Lou and Cubs PR man checked the computer to discover the obvious: the Cubs lack of consistent offense is what has hurt them most..they either score a bundle or struggle...If they'd "tacked on'' more and gotten a few key hits, the pressure on bullpen would be less and they'd be .500 or better already.

Just hope we don't look back on wasting some early good pitching (Lilly, Hill until lately)...keys to turnaround are (in order):

1). Get offense producing including more HR power from Lee, Sori, OF
2). Zambrano straightening himself out and pitching like he did last year
3). Bullpen improves.
4). Soriano getting hot and sparking team like he did in previous little streak; he's not even close to his '06 numbers.

3 of 4 of these gets us to .500 or above in a few weeks when we have more home games than this long stretch on road (East Coast trip was killer, hope West won't be the same if can get 2 of these 3).

Bench Soriano and Jones
It's come to this.  Bench the $136 million man.  Send a message.  Maybe what he needs is to get angry.  I don't question his hustle, but for crying out loud he has been abysmal in every single phase of the game.  And this no longer is a simple slump we are talking about.

Jones needs to take three or four days off.  His hitting is all out of whack.  Let him take a blow for several days.  Sometimes that is the best medicine.

by Chico Walker on May 26, 2007 12:07 AM CDT up reply actions

I am sorta in the same boat now
Moved away from Chicagoland in '01, and had to get EI to watch as many games as I like to watch. I became addicted to west coast games with Vin. My wife thinks I'm crazy. My 4 year old boy thinks it's cool. I'm siding with him.

I would have to get up for work around 6am....
...and many mornings would wake up on the couch around 3am with the TV still on the channel the Dodgers were on the night before.

Scully was like the perfect bed-time storyteller.

I can't justify getting EI anymore since I live close enough to get the Cubs now, but I do miss Vin on the Dodgers broadcasts.

A New Way to Lose.... Every Game
I am truly amazed at how this team finds a new way to lost every night.  This was a potentially season-changing victory.  Instead, it just really epitomized how truly awful this team is.

I realize we're still (shockingly) in this, but I don't really care anymore.  Bring up the youngsters.  Let's get them some experience and hope we can turn this around in a couple of years.  At least the minor leaguers will make a concerted effort for nine innings.

i agree
bring up the young guys and let them gain some experience. cant do any worse than these worthless bastards we have up here right now.

by bennyha on May 26, 2007 1:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Yep. Go young.
The rest of this season is simply a dress rehearsal for 2008, so Theriot needs to play everyday, and they need to call up Pie and play him everyday too.  I honest to God would not pitch Howry, Eyre, or Ohman the rest of the year.  I don't care if you bring up the whole frickin' Iowa bullpen.  Those three bed-wetters cannot pitch the rest of the year.

Is it possible to unload Jones, Murton and Eyre for one good reliever?

The relief pitching is obviously the biggest hole in this team.

I knew even before
the bottom of the eigth that seeing Howry out there we were going to lose. My wife says that we just scored 7 and are up 8-5. I told her to wait, we'll implode again. What a waste of some long overdue clutch hitting. What a POS team. We put up a 7 spot and it's never enough. All the other teams love this, they know we cannot close ANYONE out. And then we go down 1-2-3 in the 9th for the millionth time. The Brewers and Astros are losing for a week straight and the Cubs bail them out by imploding every other day or by making all the opposition starters look like Cy Young. I'm done.

I agree with you for the most part...
...with the exception of the bullpen.  I've always thought it was stupid to spend big-time money on set-up men.

You're almost always more likely to find a rookie or someone off the scrap who can do the job.  I mean where did Cleveland find Howry and SF find Eyre?

Might as well relegate Howry, Eyre and Ohman to mop up duty and see what Marmol, Guzman and anyone else down in the farm system can do in the traditional set-up roles.

by jdoolsiu on May 26, 2007 1:30 AM CDT up reply actions

Tghere are moves to make....
...unfortunately the Cubs decided that Eyre was better than Cotts, which is total horsecrap...Pinella mismanaged by inexplicably going to Howry, with the lead at that point you see if Weurtz can finish the game....But in terms of additional relief help, if this team can go out and waste money signing guys like Eyre and Howry, then they can sure as hell trade som OFs that we apparently do not value too highly for another relief pitcher and at the very least release Eyre if he can't be included in the deal.  There's no reason to piss the season away waiting for Eyre and Howry to regain their burned out arms at their age and exploding waste lines.  they both should have been sold high at the 2006 deadline and we might have some additional help on our roster now.  Hendry should and can make a deal of an OF for a relief pitcher.  You are not going to get great value but the season needs to be salvaged so you F value with this move, just like the tard F'd value when he held on to 2 over-used and aging relief pitchers because he didn't want to admit that he over paid for their sorry butts to begin with.  This is where you F all the sunk costs--they don't matter--and you try and make a move.  You also adjust the roster so that quality is Job 1 by bringing back Cotts and launching Eyre into the Duke Fat Farm.

A game that will live in ...oh I'm sick of it all.
Diassemble and reassemble the bullpen, now, not later. It's bad, really bad! Oh, and while the list of necessary changes is getting written, how about a new GM. Hendry you haven't made a good in-season trade since 2003, and that's because the Pirates were desperate to dump salary. So sad.

This month alone we have...
-the extra inning home game vs PIT
-the Saturday game at PHI
-the Monday night game at NYM
-the Thursday afternoon game at NYM
-the other night at SD (not the pen's fault, but still a game where we blew a late lead)
-And tonight

It's ridiculous...

by Chico Walker on May 26, 2007 1:30 AM CDT up reply actions

And again, much can be blamed on the bullpen
But, another 1 run loss... highlighting another fundamental mistake. You can easily find a major fundamental mistake by our position players in every loss this year... actually, every game this year. Period.

This time, by our best player: D-Lee, getting picked off between 2nd and 3rd in our big inning. He would've scored on A-Ram's gapper a mere pitch or two afterwards.

1-RUN GAMES = 2-11 | EXTRA INNINGS = 1-4

by SackMan on May 26, 2007 1:20 AM CDT reply actions

Not just the bullpen
The bullpen was awful, but we are also massively guilty of not doing the little things that winning teams do.

For example, tonight how does Barrett with the friggin' bases loaded not be ready to shift and block the wild pitch?  Why is DLee way off second trying to get to third when we have our best RBI man at the plate and are in the middle of a big rally?

Every game it seems there is a play or two like these that kill us.  It's just as much about doing the little things as it is finding some bullpen pitchers who can actually consistently get people out.

by TheEman on May 26, 2007 3:10 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes....it isn't just the bullpen....
the offense squandered many chances as well....easilyh had Lowe on tghe ropes in the 6th....and let him off the hook...GIDP must be some kind of clubhouse contest.....the season is coming to a fast close unless attitudes change drastically....

The offense should have scored 12 or 13 runs this game....but stupid swinging and baserunning costs a win again...

by kcjones on May 26, 2007 1:25 AM CDT reply actions

It's the bullpen and the OBP in 1-2 spots...
...every team makes horsecrap fundamental plays throughout the season...I am not defending Lee's bad move just saying that those will even out...What doesn't even out is a bullpen that can't hold leads--even multi-run leads, and an Offense that is inconsistent because the 1-2 spots are poor at getting on base.  In a totally unrelated move to tonight's loss you send Eyre down or release him the way that it should have happened when Cotts was sent down.  Cotts gets recalled.  If Murton or Jones has trade value you better make a deal with a team that has bullpen strength and that needs some offense.  Jim Hendry, this is your job quit dragging your butt until the deadline...You screwed the pooch last season by keeping Eyre and Howry and Dempster through the deadline.
